      How would you compare to gen 4? Trigger? Recoil? My original gen 4 22 had a decent factory trigger, but my g40 10 mm had a really mushy trigger (which I replaced). Curious about this gen 5

    • @SDGlock23
      @SDGlock23 Год назад +1

      @@mfer876 trigger is similar in terms of pull but the gen5 has a shorter reset. The recoil at least for the .40's is less because the gun is heavier, the slide is thicker, not as thick as .45/10mm Glocks but thicker than 9mm slides. Overall I like the gen5, I like the flared Maxwell, it a good feature. They shoot well.

    Just bought a G22 Gen 5 and a holosun laser/light combo for my EDC. I usually just keep an AR under my bed as my main personal defense weapon, but with all the road rage incidents and general violent crime in public I decided to get a better pistol than the little .380 ruger I was carrying around. I'm not a hardcore gun nut (don't have the time), I'm mostly in this for self defense and the G22 seems like the best gun on the market for practical EDC/ personal defense without spending over $800-$1k.

The 10mm was designed by Jeff Cooper in 1983. The 9mm is far older than the .40 Smith & Wesson and 10mm. My last 2 sentences only solidified the fact that the 9mm was ineffective in that case. What is interesting is that (and depending on the ammunition) the 185-grain .45 ACP can almost reach .40 S&W velocity, but with a larger diameter bullet. Thanks for watching and commenting. Nothing wrong with the .357 magnum; it's one of my favorites. If you are interested in a "40" check your local ranges for rentals and shoot as many of them as you can; Glock, Smith & Wesson, Springfield Armory...see if you like the cartridge and or pistol. .357 Magnum rounds - on average - achieve a velocity of about 1290 feet per second (fps) while .40 S&W rounds travel at a velocity of 1070 fps. The 10mm is in the .357 magnum territory, but with a higher price to pay in recoil and (in general) higher ammunition cost.

    I think it’s near-perfect, yes. The only thing that could really top it, in my opinion, would be a Glock 20 10mm if you could manage the extra weight. Because you get no loss in capacity but each shot produces that much quicker results.
    That being said, I currently carry a G22 Gen3 OD Green, all stock except Wolff springs everywhere (guide rod included) and factory steel sights from Glock. It’s simply a very easy gun to shoot well, and it’s got a lot of firepower for its size and weight. 15 rounds of .40 in a package that’s only 35 ounces when loaded, with a nice long grip and quite a long sight radius, it’s near-perfect.

      I appreciate you watching, commenting, and especially subscribing. Congratulations on your new G22! For holsters, I do recommended Falco. They do make OWB and IWB holsters for the G22. Since you have the GEN5, you need to note that when ordering to ensure that the holster would not be too tight, as with a GEN4. I ordered a A112 "Hawk" holster for my G22 GEN5, which also works with my G23 GEN5 (and Gen4 in both cases). Some break-in was required, but that is usually normal with all leather holsters. The end result, however, is a perfectly fitting holster.

    Since its conception I have had a reluctance to acknowledge the benefits of this cartridge. I guess its just the way it was introduced. To me it was a inadequate compromise of its parent the 10mm. The overall marketing was genius being forced on many in law enforcement and later all the rave in civilian sales as typical. I have sense changed my opinion and see many benefits both in the full and mid size pistols. The cartridge in these size pistols allows for faster follow up shots. This along with less weight, size, and greater mag capacity make an interesting option.

      Thanks for watching and for your comments. Like you, I was on the fence with the .40 S&W, at least until I gave it a fair shake. Carrying and shooting a 1911 in .45 ACP flavoring for most of my life caused me to judge a book by its cover with regard to the .40 S&W. Now however, and after reading the book, the .40 S&W in a G23 is my alternate carry cartridge. I recently reviewed a Rock Island Armory Ultra in .40 S&W (review coming out soon), and what a joy it was to shoot - accurate and reliable.
      I am not going to say that the .40 Smith and Wesson is the perfect defensive caliber, but I do think it to be a highly effective caliber, as long as I can do my part in steering it to the target.

    • @RangeRoninChronicles

      Thanks for watching and for your question. To answer it, I will say that I held both the G23 and G22. The grip of the G23, as does the G19 and other comparable-sized Glock pistols, just did not feel right in my hand...I prefer the longer grip of the G17, G22, G20, and G45.
      The 4.49-inch barrel of the G22 holds no distinct advantage over the 4.02-inch barrel of the G23. For example, and according to the Ballistics by the Inch" website, the Federal 180-grain Hydra-Shok has a muzzle velocity of 1,051 fps; whereas, out of the 4.02-inch barrel of the G23, the velocity would be around 1,022 fps. No one would notice the difference - the bad guy being hit by one or the felt recoil by the operator shooting it.
      The G22 picks up two rounds over the G23 (15 vs. 13) and gives the total height of the pistol at 5.51-inches, as compared to the 5.08-inches of the G23. Again, the grip length of the G22 just fits in my hand better than the G23. You may find the opposite in your hand. For me, I'll give up 1/2-inch in concealment for the better grip and control the G22 provides me. I also installed the thickest grip adapter, as I do on all my Glock pistols that use them, full size, compact, and sub-compact - no matter. It was the first thing I did when I got my G20 GEN4 and GEN5.
      The best that I can offer is to try and hold both, if you have the opportunity to do so, and base your comparison on what fits your hand better.

    This fascination with the 9mm for handguns was pushed by the governments so as to standardize the caliber for NATO forces. As with many things where the military goes law enforcement is sure to follow. 9mm is also considered the world standard for SMG ammo and that fills the bill for NATO as well. There’s no need for armed civilians to be under gunned just because the military and police wish to be. Bigger bullets make bigger holes. If your wrists are weak do some simple hand exercises and get some strength in them. Don’t follow the crowd. Remember, only dead things flow down stream. Live ones swim upstream. The .40 is a great round and that extra snappiness or recoil comes from the fact that it does generate more power than a 9mm. The new modern day myth is that the 9mm is equal to a larger caliber yet without the recoil. When your only measure of performance is a ballistic gel block and you take the best 9mm design and compare it to a larger caliber that isn’t in the best design that’s not science that’s called shady marketing. The best .40 will always outperform the best 9mm simply due to basic physics. Even when the calculated kinetic energy written on the boxes is the same the bigger and heavier slug will always transfer its useable energy better. The Thompson and LaGarde experiments demonstrated that over a century ago. The manufacturers claimed that because the 9mm luger had more “calculated” kinetic energy on paper that it could perform just as good or better than the bigger calibers. The actual testing on live animals demonstrated that their theory was in fact wrong and because all rounds tested were captured within the torso of the animals all available energy was transferred into them so “bullet design” was not the main factor. Yes a hollow point can help to keep a round from passing through and create a little more tissue damage but it doesn’t increase the overall mass and or momentum of a bullet. No one to include the FBI has ever found a way to disprove what those tests showed on live animals back then. Heck I can walk out in my backyard right now and shoot my steel targets with a 9mm +p HP round and then shoot it with a .40 S&W HP round with similar calculated energies written on the boxes and the .40 will hit with much more authority and spin the plate back around easily whereas the 9mm will struggle to do it.
    From live animals in a test to steel plates in someone’s backyard larger and heavier slugs have always demonstrated a real recognizable performance advantage that lifeless blocks of gel can’t. Years ago when the FBI had settled on the .40 it was based on the need to find a better performing caliber (not bullet design). I even remember one of the lead agents involved state he wanted a bullet that performed similar to a 230 grain 45 ACP round which is why they settled on a 180 grain .40 S&W round instead of a lighter round that would generate more calculated kinetic energy. From the time the Army first adopted the .45 ACP people have known that bigger slugs just hit harder regardless and what calculated energy is written on the side of the box. When I read the FBI’s latest study it read more like a marketing campaign to sell its agents on the move back to the 9mm than it did a real study to find the best performing caliber. They now focus almost entirely around shooting lifeless gel blocks because if energy transfer, momentum and the actually effects on the living aren’t being measured or considered you can make the smaller calibers look close in performance to a larger caliber. People can argue about the real reasons all they want but it was a known fact that they were under political pressure to address the issue of too many agents in a certain demographic getting passed over for promotion because of poor handgun qualification scores. The .40 S&W was just too much for some of them to handle and because they had already bad mouthed the 9mm they had to sell the 9mm as being just as good or better than the .40 they were now forcing their agents to give up. You can cherry pick gunfight stories and shoot a gel block 50+ different ways all you want but the .40 S&W in the “best” designs will always be the better caliber if the shooter can actually shoot it.

    • @RangeRoninChronicles
      @RangeRoninChronicles  Год назад +1

      Thanks for watching and your short dissertation. The 185-grain .45 ACP (depending on multiple factors) will meet velocities generated by the .40 Smith & Wesson, and with a larger bullet diameter. Personally, I like the feel of the S&W .40 when fired. It just leaves the impression that something tangible came out of the barrel. The .40 S&W is anything but short and wimpy. The common mindset with the 9mm is that more rounds can be fired faster than with a larger, more powerful caliber, and there is truth in that. My thinking is that I would rather shoot less rounds of a more effective caliber to stop a threat. But, there are no guarantees. I know of two LEOs who were surprised that after 27 rounds were fired into a human who was cranked-up on PCP before he stopped and dropped, and only because of the loss of blood pressure due to being shot that many times with 9mm projectiles. I doubt he ever felt a thing - he just faded away into never-never land.
      The best that we can do, on our part when firing any caliber, is hope that science does its part quickly.
      Again, thanks. I enjoy these conversations.

    Used to be most popular 9mm is the one to go with but 40 is great

      Yup. 40 is pretty much phased out now. I think everyone should send me their ammo for proper disposal.

    All in all, the .40 to me is a meh round... I don't hate it, but I don't love it either, preferring .357 Sig, .45 GAP, 10mm, and even 9mm over it. Despite this, I do own all the Glocks in .40 S&W, including the G22, G23, G27, and G35, and I do reload and shoot quite a bit of .40 as well. It's just that .40 doesn't do anything nowadays that the 9 can do and it isn't obscure enough to satisfy my interest in oddball calibers (*cough* .45 GAP *cough*)... the .40 was designed as a compromise caliber and it shows. Nothing wrong with it, but it also isn't super exciting either.

      I am with you on the .40. I am on the fence about it, and I have not tried enough defensive/hunting ammunition in one to slide one way or the other. If the bank account will ever justify one, a Ruger GP-100 Match Champion in 10mm is being considered, as it would also fire .40 Smith & Wesson.

      @@RangeRoninChronicles I did see a GP-100 in 10mm at my LGS a while back that I was drooling over. I don't know that I would ever put .40 in it, though, as I like 10mm better and the heavy frame of the GP-100 could take the power easily. Alas! I couldn't justify it's cost either

      The appeal for me is I don’t reload. And since everyone is going to 9mm, there is going to be a CRAPLOAD of surplus 40 sitting around that’s going to need to be sold which was surplus stock for the military and police. When everyone is shooting 9mm, that means demand for 40 goes down. Which also means when 9mm dries up, I’ll be able to find 40 all day. That AND it’ll be cheaper. Ballistically speaking, 9mm is about on par with 40. Not there yet, for 40 still penetrates deeper. But it’s close. 10mm is a lot of pistol for self defense. And I’m not getting any younger.
