- Dynamic components aren't something that will fit into one Skill Builder. This is part 1 of our dynamic components series. In this video, we will dive into what dynamic components are and give you a little fundamental knowledge on how to get started. Make sure to follow our whole series to truly understand how to utilize dynamic components.

My favorite feature of SU Pro. Please schedule an advanced "build along" session of dynamic components at Base Camp 2020. Some detailed kitchen cabinets or woodworking project would be great.
The Skill Builder format is a keeper!
Aaron you are AWESOME. I can’t say how great it feels putting a suggestion out there and having it responded to with a series like this. Great introduction, very much looking forward to diving in deeper!! I’ve been stuck trying to create an “animated, scale-able, nested dynamic component” for weeks and this content will hopefully unblock this road block! Thanks to you and your team for focusing on this aspect of the software. I’m definitely down a rabbit hole here but it looks like you guys are here to help! 💪🇺🇸
So happy to help! Thank you for the suggestion!
Aaron!! It seems your followers' skills are above average. They are so excited about this vid & they look craving for some advance level ones.
Good vid, Aaron. Looking forward to more, I need to learn dynamic components!
Very helpful, look forward to part 2
Thank you so much....! Being a Interior designer this probably will make me save a ton of my time while creating modular furniture.
This is so cool! I love the idea you can use formulas! Man, this solves so many of my problems! 👍
I LOVE TEACHER !!
Excellent Aaron, thank you.
Hi Aaron, each time the nice jingle sounds there is a hidden gem that comes up (for me).
I didn't expect dynamic components to be so smart. Quite curious about what part 2 and the following will reveal.
Hope you don't get tired teaching us! Thank you! Wolfgang
Tired? Never! So long as there is something to show you, I will keep making videos!
This is a good start to introduce to Dynamic Components capabilities in Sketchup!
Great Start, Have Tried and succeeded at Dynamic Components but this should help set some basics down. Was a little hard learning it the self teaching route. Thanks Aaron.
Once again, great job ! Thanks
When dynamic components first came out, I thought they would change Sketchup FOREVER, but they didn't. The problem is that more than often changing a parameter creates a new unique component and that just defeats the purpose of a dynamic component in the first place ;(
I still use them, but mostly just because they're fun. If Sketchup could make them like Autocad's dynamic blocks, then I would use them a lot more in my workflow.
BUT STILL ... coincidentally, just 2 days ago, I made a video about a dynamic WINDOW component, so if you want to check it out, go see my latest video. I also left a download link for the component in the description.
Yes, my issue exactly. Really bloats the drawing. I wish they would update DC's and correct this flaw.
This is super helpful! I'm going to make a whole lot of useful tools for my architecture business
Thanks!! Always wanted to learn how to use dynamic components :-)
Yes please!! Most interested in cabinets and built in furniture.
I've never used dynamic components up until now as this is my first version of SU Pro. Since I'm used to parametric modelling in other 3D CAD, I'll be interested to see how far dynamic components can be taken.
Thanks, I really have to start learning more about this software. It's much more powerful than what I use it for. I'm looking forward to next week already :)
Depending on when you read this comment, it may already be next week!
Thanks a lot Aaron. Been waiting for this video. After this series can you do one on parametric design?
I now have a pavlovian response that I'm about to learn something when I hear the intro music.
Hopefully you are not salivating on your keyboard.
Thanks. Dynamic components feature (Parametized drawing) in Fusion 360 as their main selling point because they are so useful, so I’m glad you started this tutorial series.
There is a free DC plugin that gives users the ability of creating binary models such as doors that are either open or closed.
For me the ultimate DC model would be a marionette which can be made to take any stance - running, walking, jumping, pointing etc - by just touching trigger points on its surface.
DCs in combination with components are what sets SketchUp apart from Fusion 360 and Blender. DCs with components normally add around 10% extra file size To each model, whereas in Fusion 360 and Blender the file size can be much higher with their “parametized” models
I’m definitely interested in seeing something like that modeled, not sure how the components and sub components would reference space to be able to move properly. I’ve been attempting something far less complex than what you’re talking about and have been stuck for awhile. We’ll see how deep Aaron is willing to dive on this! I’m in for all of it! 💪🇺🇸
@@jeffharmed1616 This can happen in Sketchup as well. If your DC's are very complex (e.g., nested DCs) they will copy as new components, not instances, and thus bloat the file size substantially. I've run into this many times.
Thank you, it is very useful series of video.
First time user and new to drawing woodworking projects so I am interested in learning ALL I can about sketchup.
Thanks Aaron, this is already great introduction to dynamic components and the way you explain makes it even better digestible. I’m happy I was bugging you with this, haha!
Harassment appreciated, as always!
Aaron Making Stuff lol. Can’t wait for the rest of tutorials!
How can a simple software offer so much? I never knew this exists!!! Very interesting. Thanks
There is always more to do and more to learn in Sketchup!
Thank you so much!!!! You are awesome
Nicely explained and demonstrated (KISS)
That is pure gold, baby...
great lesson!
Good thing I have a background in object oriented programming. Very interesting.
Tnaks you, this is very helpful
Thank you, Sir
Muy bueno!
I love Dynamic component. Your tutorial is awesome. Now I would like to color apply in different color in diffrent faces in cube is it possible ? I really want to do .
Thanks Aaron. One issue I had was the millimeter units were not available (only cm and inches). I input =Size/10 as a workaround. Is there not another way?
I have never used them and the concept is cool. You should try and incorporate this into the live modeling sessions so we can see how they work in the modeling flow. Im not sure where i would use this feature.. i dont know enough yet to make that judgment call:)
LT72884 I had thought about that but, for me, DCs involve a lot of trial and error and often hand written notes and experimentation. Maybe just a little one here or there... we will see!
Waiting for Part 2
Thanks a lot
Gracias, siempre he creído que los componentes dinámicos es lo que va a hacer de Sketchup el mejor software BIM pero casi nadie sabe como programarlos. Nuevamente gracias y sigue adelante
Can we change the dimensions of cylinder ,Like you have changed the dimensions of cube with dynamic options plz reply
4:40 I'm just starting out on this and I did everything you said, and it won't change materials.
I can get the size to change, but not the material.
I want "Wood Lumber ButtJoined" and "0128_White" . I even tried using the hash #FFFFFF for white.
WhattamIdoingwrong?
thenkiu
Hello, do you offer courses where you go more into depth regarding dynamic components?
Let’s make a dynamic window!
Keep watching!
i am stuggling because i use metric and i am trying to save the size in metric but it doesnt work, please help me
Good. Im learning. Cant find anything on sketchup that helps.
For some reason my Component option window does not show any information. Any idea why ?
is there an actual list of attribute commands available.
Approaching to Apply button was... epochal. It had to be carefully commented. Yes
.I want to download the component model for furniture, where to download .. I am Vietnamese .. I need help
I was just going to browse RUclips a little and now I'm stuck with homework :(
Tostitos78 And I was just going to respond to your comment and now I want Tostitos ;)
is this only a feature in the pro versions of sketchup?
You need Pro to CREATE dynamic components, but they can be used on any Desktop version of SketchUp.
You made the video to make this wine umbrella.
"No Components Selected" in Components Options Window. Please, I need some help. Thanks a lot.
I have the answer. First open Microsoft Edge (like internet explorer) then Sketchup 2020. Bye
Did you *select* the item or actually *open* it?
Just select it.
I only get the components options no attributes?
Steve Hubner I had the opposite issue, attributes no options, if you can disable dynamic components, close SketchUp, reopen it, enable them again, that did the trick for me. On a 2011 iMac running High Sierra and SU2019. Best of luck
What version of SketchUp are you running? You do need PRO to see the Attributes menu (sorry that I did not mention that... it will be the first thing said in Part 2).
I really enjoy your "skill builders" and your technique in presenting them, however, It would be helpful for users that do not have "SU Pro" if you would let us know a head of time that particular skill builders only work with "SU Pro" so we are not wasting our time. Thank You.
Yeah... sorry about that... I got so excited (and honestly, a little pressed for time) and I launched into making something before I gave a full rundown on the requirements! Hopefully it is a nice way to see what else is available to you in the Pro version!
Hello how are you. I want to ask you if it is possible to make an isolated footing with a pyramidal shape, but that is a dynamic component, that is, parametric. I thank you very much if you respond to me, I know my message may go unnoticed.
I would recommend looking into either the Profile Builder extension or Live Components.
THIS ISNT POSIBLE ON FREE SKETCHUP ISNT IT¿?
Only works on pro...
hi how to find dynamic component in sketchup2022
Creating them is still the same process as shown here. Make a component, right-click, and select Dynamic Components > Component Attributes.
@@SketchUp thank you for replying.
It was disabled 🤣
Becuase it was new installation and I didn't notice that
Part 2?
This is the second video for introduction to dynamic components by two different people and both choose to apply colour as material. I would have thought that blue is colour for example and wood is material. Is there not a heading called colour and a separate one called material because as a cabinet maker material is never colour. That’s just misleading. Maybe I need to watch more in this series.
Funfact: You only have the Attributes in the Pro Version. Great...
Correct. Creation of Dynamic Components is a Pro feature.
