Yes, good for you Miguel! I considered myself a Democrat and voted for Obama, but while my values haven't changed, that party did, and went way too far, right off the rails. I had to start calling myself conservative bc they radically changed what it meant to be a liberal. Well. I'm glad you're on the side of sanity Miguel.
So how does name calling fit into your equation, seems like you are saying one side has the answers and the other is the demons, I don't know that any side has cornered the market on truth.
Jose, more and more Latinos are admitting their conservatism. True also for blacks, gays and all the other "minorities". I know an awful lot of Hispanic conservatives who only NOW are willing to admit it in public. It is becoming a groundwell. All anyone has to do is look at the thirty-five percent of the Hispanic vote Trump got in the election to see the lies we are fed. Conservative values and Hispanic values align almost perfectly. Family, faith, self reliance, hard work, how do the two differ when those are all the same? Thanks for putting in your two cents.
@@tomswinburn1778 really love this comment re "Family, faith, self reliance, hard work," ... This is the founding principles of life. I was a democratic strategist for a local campaign in Austin, Texas. For the first time in my life I got to see the inside of the machine, though on a small scale. Unfortunately, it was rather true that Democrats want to keep people of color in a low to middle spot. They are the best voting source if they're kept in need. It was weird and quite frightening to think that conservatives may not be the racist party.
May not be.... we are not the racist party, repubs, signed and passed the lbj human rights deal, passed the 13,14th and 15th amendments, with 0 support from dems. Not one Republican voted for Obamacare, as it's a sham. Fed's new deal, removed all service and agriculture employees and fields from SSI, due to southern Dixiecrat influence. Republicans have never been behind racism. Democrats, started the kkk,jim crow, ect.... welfare isnt designed to improve lives but keep people poor, if it was to improve lives it should be providing real training and awarding those who work to better themselves, not punishing them for making minimum wage by cutting off benefits.
exactly, if you simply take the time to review, research just a bit you can see all these Democratic sponsored policies, ie current welfare system etc are exactly designed to keep people in need, to keep them down. Just like the other commenter stated if they truly wanted to help people you'd have it so that a genuine training be provided and be a requisite for receiving any social benefit!!! Enough of the lies the Democrats spread saying they are the party of inclusivity, when nothing can be further from the truth
Identity politics is racism. They are not even trying to hide it anymore. Campaigners for Stacy Abrahms were supplied a phone app that told them which houses were white people so they could skip them when they were going door to door. When she lost the governors race in Georgia she could only cry racism and throw accusations at her opponent to hide the fact that she wasted millions of dollars campaigning terrible socialist ideas in a red state. If her ideas were worth a damn she would be able to gain support of some of those white people she skipped over but instead she divided everyone and still lost.

He's surely a moderate, but has shown the ability to be flexible enough to push for improving education, roll back taxes enough to give the average working person a little boost and encourage industry, instituted prison reform, etc. As an elderly person who has lived through many administrations both Democrat and Republican, my standards for "conservative" tend to be a bit old-fashioned, so from my laptop, he qualifies as an old-time "classical liberal with a moderate conservative bent". Thing is that one should be able to freely criticize any subject without automatically being labeled a racist or bigot. If the religion of Islam is criticized that doesn't mean he is an "Islamophobe". If one critiques feminism he is not a misogynist or if he critiques "black culture" he is not a racist or if homosexuality is disapproved of that doesn't mean he is a homophobe. All those "minority groups" have valid problems within their own sphere yet seem severely taboo to discuss. True Equality means equal treatment and equal examination. For example, Christianity (or Buddhism or Hinduism for that matter) can be criticized at length without any repercussions while Islam is examined and critiqued likewise, one is attacked for being bigoted or hateful toward all Muslims. No one claims a Christian critic hates all Christians. He is just debunking the Bible and exposing it's contradictions. Yet an Islamic critic doing the same thing is claimed to be a bigot. This is the hypocrisy of the Left.
A former friend of mine was shot by a cop, not because he is a minority but because he was an idiot who made bad decisions and actually got what he deserved.
It does happen and is unfortunate for all involved. Doesn't make you love your friend any less just wish he/she would have acted with more integrity and less ignorance. It doesnt make that person innocent or the officer guilty. Just a sad moment for us all.
In response to what? Also, maybe consider that discrimination and bias aren't the same as "racism" which includes a power dynamic minorities don't possess in the instances they tend to be accused. "Reverse racism" includes the suggestion of a catalyst...an "original racism" and the structural/cultural/political components of that simply doesn't exist in reverse. If you *genuinely* reverse the incidence of racism, it becomes clear that reactionary and defensive responses aren't *actually* racist but resistance against annihilation. To suggest otherwise is, well...
Not at all, Andre St-Laurent, although I understand why many people view it that way. It is, in fact, applied in that way by some people (and, even then, as a reactionary response) but not by those who grasp the actual principles of racial justice. Like any concept it can be co-opted and perverted. Anyone truly set on racial justice would address hateful and discriminatory behavior in the direction of white people just as readily as they would any minority. And it's not a matter of whites (or anyone else) being racist "by default" but anyone uncritically/unquestioningly immersed in a racist environment by conditioning, that includes minorities against minority groups (even those they belong to). I won't explain the concept because it seems as though you're familiar with it. These types of theories generally stem from research, observation, and historical analysis; and seek to describe phenomena which already exist, rather than to "invent" it out of thin air. Your last statement has me wondering... Who do you think it was that "came up" with the idea and why are you so certain they did it for that reason?
Wrong. It comes from Critical Race Theory, one of many theories to arise at the time (the 70's) which were critical of American culture, largely in response to the Vietnam war. Analysis and criticism aren't necessarily synonymous with attacking. The majority of people engaged in that work simply desire accountability and those are the means they take to that end. Political Correctness, in the weaponized form you describe (and I also recognize in some exchanges), is typically a misguided attempt to inspire people to create a more compassionate society... It does, in some ways overlap with theories on race (gender, sexuality, etc.) but, again, it's typically more a perversion than an actual value - to force people to be compassionate and understanding, or to define those things exactly the same way as you. On the other hand, political correctness is a term often used by people who think that one has to be phony to hold the beliefs expressed by those they're accusing who aren't imposing their beliefs on them but simply expressing their values. It is also a way to vilify those values and shame those who hold them into silence. And, again, none of it is inherently indicative of a desire to blame shortcomings on others but to describe the mechanism by which some people are disadvantaged by others, specifically, systems in need of accountability. I guess that's the other side of things for you.
You are becoming part of the problem. You speak from authority to immigration enforcement as racist but make no arguments to be refuted. If you truly did not have the time you should not have partially engaged it. You merely made the claim that the policies are race specific yet no facts to be refuted. That is irresponsible to leave a half finished argument on the internet for the honest observer to confirm his and your own bias without fact or likely to stir up anger to the observer. We have enough of that going on in the world. Living in bubbles of sound bites.
Black Israelite are pretty fucking cringe. But I agree they are vastly part of why blacks are increasingly hating whites and are part of the problem they need to be addressed and recognized as a cult. I accidentally stumbled upon one of their videos the other day and listened to it while reading the comments... They vilify all whites (regardless whether your ancestors had slaves or not) claiming their Black Jesus will destroy us all on Judgement Day rapturing only the black believers. These people are insanely misguided...
snakedicks88, They are infected with lies from satan. The two worst parts of that are: 1.) They don’t focus on the teachings of Jesus. They bathe in their own hatred; fully ignoring the Word of God. 2.) They don’t realize how evil and hardened their hearts are. Unfortunately, I can confidently say that they actually enjoy it. They’re no different than any other evil group. They’re just more pons for satan to use as mouth pieces.
I found this gentleman interesting and articulate. I appreciated him noticing that both White males and black males are denigrated in this world. I also appreciated his awareness of the "Echo Chambers" where the electronics keep sending us back the same type of information that we seem to select on line. If he listens as well as he talks, I believe I could have a friendly, entertaining and profitable conversation with this man. As a 68 year old white male, I have my own reasons for racism. My grandfather had his skull fractured a robbery by three black males when he was an 83 year old man. He lived just over a year afterwards, so it was not considered murder. I have black friends, and I do not blame them for the actions of others of similar appearance, but I do get hostile towards people who use deceit and violence to extort money and control from those who worked for what they have. I also had the experience of desiring a job that I qualified for, except that I was the wrong color. It would have been an excellent learning experience, as well as helpful in paying for college. I believe that the position was never filled because no qualified minority applied. It was an internship for engineering students. In High school, I took the National Merit Scholarship test and ended up in the top 2%, which got me a nice certificate, and no help in college. The next year, a black student in the same school scored lower than I did, but in the top 1% of black students, so he got a full ride scholarship. His parents were as well educated and mine, and we went to the same schools, both high school and college, so it seemed unfair to me that he got a full scholarship, and I had to spend 40 hours per week doing janitor work and 60 hours per week in class and studying to gain an education. I bear him no animosity, but the system seemed skewed in his favor, not mine. I would echo the words of Martin Luther KIng Jr. I look forward to the day when I and my children are judged by our character, and not by the color of our skin.
Indeed, affirmative action is inherently racist. Asians who have earned a position in college are being shunned for the sake of virtue signalling. Disgusting really.
I appreciate your words. I am a 47 yo white male that has been the receiver of racist and bias treatment. Like you, I scored well in school and I performed well in law enforcement entrance exams. I was in the top 2% in multiple criteria for my profession but was pushed aside because I was the wrong race and gender. The idea of equal opportunity should have been enforced in a single generation. Once equality happened it became equal. When "equality" changes the testing, changes the requirements, and changes the standard for one race to be allowed a difference from another race; equality is no longer defined. MLK was correct to want all to be trusted the same. Today that message is totally ignored so the weak, the stupid, and the failed can be elevated over the strong, the smart, and the talented because of the privilege which was granted by birth. Equality will only be equal when one standard is needed and when one criteria is allowed. Having preferential treatment is exactly what MLK was trying to abolish.
Yet some would tell you that you were still the recipient of White privilege. It may be true to some extent. we were trained to work, and trained to think. The Asians have been trained even better, and run into quota problems on college admissions.
I'm replying because of the end of this video, encouraging us to have challenging conversations. You clearly thoroughly considered everything you wrote in your reply, and I share the interest in this gentleman's TED talk and work. There's a very loose end in your reply, though, and I want to discover your reasons, so that maybe I can expand my worldview, too, and understand where people are coming from, even if I disagree in the end. Before I ask, I want to commend you for having the intelligence to "not blame... for the actions of others of similar appearance." Such blaming is strong human instinct, and it's good that you have overcome it. I just can't reconcile how you could say that, but also say that you "have reasons for racism." Your desire shared with MLK jr. for people to be "judged by our character, and not by the color of our skin," seems inherently not racist. You also express anger at a system for treating people differently based on race, but don't express anger at those other people. I'm genuinely confused, and I almost never engage, but today I'm asking the difficult question. In your own opinion, what makes you racist?
I have never understood why caring for all people because they are "people" gets me labelled as a "racist" by people who don't like me because I'm white.
@McQuasi I don't really understand you... There are some people who pick *one* aspect about me, and use that to denounce *everything* about me. Is that fair? Is that right? I've never understood it. Can you help me understand? Or is your comment just as - if not moreso - unproductive?
@McQuasi Thanks for the clarity - I really appreciate it. The 'prompt' was the video itself: that's what led me to make the comment. I suppose my comment might have been confusing... My view: caring for *all people* for being *people* (not because of a particular trait). But yet, *some* people don't like me because of a particular trait (i.e. skin colour)... I find that odd, because it essentially elevates certain humans above others, which I find inherently wrong. I never intended to give the impression that I'm creating a "them" and "us" distinction based on skin colour... the only "them" and "us" distinction I intended is between those who care for all people because of being *people*, and those who disrespect certain groups based on genetic traits. I hope that clarifies. If not, I'll try harder! Thanks again for your response. I was actually expecting a less civil reply, and I'm really impressed that this has become a productive discussion!
Wow, first time seeing people on the internet actually clarifying and ending a conversation without civility being thrown out the window. I'm genuinely impressed.
@TheBaggyT for me it depends on what part of you you choose to reveal to me. for example, if you’re a trump supporter/ rapist/ xenophobic/ homophobic/ racist/ islamophobic/ antisemitic etc. then i will immediately stop talking to you because i can never form a friendship or even be civil to someone who is bigoted and discriminatory.
@@shakira1682 Can a person be a Trump supporter and not be a racist? Can a person be a Trump hater and yet be a rapist? I don't understand why you are causing (or, at the very least, assuming) division based on buzzwords that are designed to trigger certain emotions? I'm a Brit. When the Brexit vote happened, I asked a colleague of mine, "What do you make of the vote?" I didn't tell him which way I voted. The response I got was, "I can't believe that over half the country is racist!" I get on very well with the guy. Yet because of his assumption that everyone who voted for Brexit was a racist, I never told him which way I voted. As a result, we remain good friends. My point is that your comment comes across very much that you care more about people's point of view rather than their actions. The reason I say that is because you begin the list with "Trump supporter". Political leanings should have no bearing on whether a person is civil or not. People who think they do are usually the very people filled with hate and wanting to cause division... in my experience. As for me, I love discussing with people who have a different perspective on the world as it helps me to be more informed. In one of my previous jobs, I had a client who was a self-proclaimed fascist, and wanted the world to know. I asked him lots of questions about it, and came to the conclusion that he wasn't really a fascist, he just didn't have much knowledge of different systems of governance, and felt that fitted best out of what he knew. By the time I finished working with him, he would often say, "Well, as a fascist... and I know I'm not really a proper fascist..." Is that progress? Or should I have taken your perspective and immediately stopped talking with him?
I disagree with his politics but I think we can all agree there needs to be a conversation no matter the ideology or side. Because if we don't talk all we have is violence and hate.
the biggest problem with this is that thought leaders on the left are convinced that they have all the answers and anyone who disagrees with them even slightly is branded a"nazi. " Look what happened to Laci Green for even suggesting that maybe people should try and have conversations about this.
actually ill say like artinugami : there is no conversation just argumentation with no solid progress. both camps are too strict and uptight. there are real problems and real threats and each race and sexes has their own issues and concerns. also there is to be action but not any action , the action needs to be concerted , precise and widespread for it to be effective and this is what conversation is all about.
I used to be liberal. In high school, I was like everyone else. I never paid attention to high school and Obama was relatable. "I don't like talking about politics", yet I never really understood it. Years later, I now enjoy politics and am 100% conservative.
Agree, I couldn't decide if I should give this video a thumbs up because of the advice he gives or a thumbs down, because he wasn't even following his own advice.
From my estimation, there's literally no practical benefits to racial/ethnic diversity, and I say that as an ethnic minority. Diversity of thought on the other hand is necessary for a healthy society, I think we need to stop focusing on the former and concentrate on the latter.
For me not all people of one skin color think alike. And thats the assumption that people who advocate for diversity hold. I don't hold that assumption therefore diversity of ideas is more important. The idea that a minorities lived experience somehow trumps mine as an idividual is nonsense. The idea that because I'm white nothing I say has any merit is bigotry. It's not okay and thankfully I and many like me were given a spine and I will never be silenced.
Assimilation is how people grow. The gathering of different and diverse ways into a place or people for the furtherment of all. Using the best attributes of all and making a new level of human development. How can that be wrong? Diversity is the continuing of segregation by the group itself rather than by an outside agency. Something fought for once was to be included now people fight against it. Diversity is only good for those who wish to control others or enforce a world view. Usually of victimhood these days.
Diversity is division defining minorities by skin and gender is to say that skin and gender define our thoughts. nothing could be more sexist and racist
@@garetclaborn Diversity is the division of everyone by skin, gender and culture not just minorities as suggested by SJW doctrine. Just an observation based on the fact that you stated minorities which I read to not included white people as if white people are not diverse which they are in culture and physical attributes. Another fact is that a minority is a majority somewhere and visa versa. All these ideas seem to only apply to white European based countries but exclude the white populace. Diversity is a design to facilitate ease of control by use of maintained segregation between groups and groups within groups. A united front is a dangerous front. So the only united front diversity advocates and other interested parties want to see is a militant front. Easier to maintain a victimhood culture if each group is held at arm length from each other and fed disinformation to incite dissension and aggression towards whoever one may wish to point them, including at each other. The Democrats have this down pat. They will never advocate assimilation which does not mean the loss of culture identity but the amalgamation of cultures and their achievements through understanding to create a new if not better culture. This is how diversity actually works not how it should. If you wish to maintain your old culture without compromise then you are not willing to grow nor are you helping to improve your chosen home. Most moved for a better life so why would they want to maintain all their cultural baggage? Why do you think the left invented the terms like cultural appropriation, diversity and so on. It further enforces the separation when you can stop people from wanting to share anything whilst encouraging the same people to take. A healthy respect for all the good aspects of every culture but not to the inclusion of any one culture's beliefs or traditions over another's for the appeasement of a group is what is need. I agree nothing could be more sexist and racist than diversity.
That is not what Gentrification is. Maybe you should look into it. The comments on YT is not really place for an extended discussion. But suffice to say it is a great deal more than someone ("painting their house."
@@FightbackMediaGroup, I know, I was being purposefully reductivist. Gentrification is improving a neighborhood to the point that the people who have become comfortable living in blight are no longer comfortable, or can't afford to maintain their lifestyle.
@Alexander Scott you do realize they are literally showing actual footage of people speaking their own words and thoughts right? Its literally the polar opposite of fake news. I prefer that to opinions from "reporters" with TDS on the MSM. Now thats the REAL fake news!
So, do it then. There are obviously people who populate both extremes. The truly important thing is who is more prevalent in our country today, and which side's extreme views have bled over toward the middle more? Btw, if you think one side (either R or L) is the "big bad", and you ignore everything else, you are the problem.

I live in a small town in wv 100 percent white. There some still have rebel flag stickers on their cars or rebel flags in their yard but I GUARANTEE you a black person could walk the whole length of the town (2miles) at 2am and not a damn thing would happen to them.
Knarf Trakiul -- Try doing that in the hood at 2pm and not 2am. You risk life and limb doing so. I have many bad experiences walking from my car or motorcycle to a business in or near the hood. Being stopped and told that "I do not belong there" each and every time is the least that will happen to you. Being physically accosted by Blacks who want to beat you up is very likely and at times with knives and guns. I have always open carried and at times had club brothers with me who were armed to the teeth wanting trouble. The only way to handle violence is with extreme violence and let everyone know that the choice is theirs to make. Right is right. Wrong is wrong. Nice gets nice and not nice gets really not nice. The only way to live. Works for me.

Whatever side you are on, I think we have become more polarized by the internet. The damn thing feeds you the right or the left depending on what you like to click on
Maybe, but the indoctrination of the MSM isn't exactly healthy either. At least the internet lets us find sources we trust outside of the reach of Fox News, ABC, NBC, CNN, etc..
andrew domenitz Agreed, it seems people forget that we all bleed red, on both sides. It's sad to seem people so indoctrinated in their ideologies to demonize those who don't agree with them.
The internet isn't sentient. It doesn't have a will. It's just a method of communication. If we are more polarized it's because we have done it to ourselves. I don't think we are though. I think you just see more than you used to. We've had a civil war in this country before. 2 if you count the American Revolution. We have had 50/50 splits in elections. Congress and the senate constantly swing from a republican to democrat majority and back again. Our Country has always been this way. Some of you just haven't been paying attention. It's simply harder to ignore

Not if you click on diverse material. Honestly, nothing against you personally but this whole idea of an "echo chamber" that paints us all as innocent and helpless victims of the all-powerful internet is a rather absurd excuse for a lack of intellectual curiosity...
The democratic liberal left wants divisive identity politics. To pit you against "others". The conservative right wants individuals to be judged by the content of their character. Pick 'em.
Lol ok, but moment I go on conservative gaming forums, the unrelenting black jokes, race statistics, final solution threats flow.... but it’s a liberal problem.
Akil Tircuit I honestly don’t know why the new thing is pretending that racists are for the left. Try getting a member of the kkk to vote for anyone but a republican
No sir. . what hes pointing out is the growth of one perspective into seeing and experiencing a few other perspectives behind the world wide web and how its truly revealed Truth through social interactions. To put it simply. The only voice he ever heard was his own until the echo chambers were created through social media and he got to see what it was to be in different positions through anonymity. A gift of social media.
Most of his audience certainly is. Did you catch how smug most of them were, not realizing he was actually pointing the finger of non-communication directly at them. It isn't the right that is not willing to engage in open conversation.
@@CaptainSeamus Steve didn't realize this because he's just like them. He laughed when the guy asked if there were "alternative facts" just like the sheep in the audience did. No clue who they were really laughing at.
Hummm, sort of like Umar Johnson lost me when made every black person in an interracial marriage irrelevant to him and is message. That is just flat out racism.
Milo isn't Alt Right, he's a guy who wrote an article on the alt right and didn't go scorched earth on the idea, even though he disagreed with it, but because he understood some of their fears, points and concerns he was labelled alt right. Whilst being an ethnic jew, who's openly homosexual and has married a black man. So, If the mainstream media that care so much about being correct, righteous and true in their reporting, can't even get these simple fact about Milo correct, then what else can they get wrong!? Or is it on purpose? Milo, a homosexual, who rejects the idea that Islam is a good thing for the West, because when realised Islam is not liberal and is actually extremely authoritarian. See any Islamic country that has enacted shariah law and what the punishment for homosexuals is or the punishment for apostasy is, to understand why Milo fears Islam, he's spoke at length on it and received death threats, was deplatformed and became a point of left wing hatred and AntiFa (aka Napoleon's dogs) burned down Berkeley in their insane outrage. Milo a conservative, who rejects the left wing propaganda around LGBT+'s best interests lay in the democratic party and was touring colleges in the U.S, as a lightening rod for conservatism and exposing partisan lecturers, professors and college boards for being ridiculous, underhand and bullies against anything that is right of Karl Marx. Milo an ethnic Jew, who described the notion that the democratic party is anything but a plantation for everyone who isn't a good ol' American white boy. When the democratic party did nothing for those it claims to help the most in 8 years under their President Obama, when many of the same people who voted for Obama were so frustrated, let down and tired of the b.s, then voted for Trump, only to get called racist, homophobic, anti-Semetic, anti Islamic, anti Mexican and anything else that call be used to harness oppression points. So, if the MSM, AntiFa and this guy, who's giving a speech at Tedx can be not just simply be wrong about Milo being ''alt right'', but to not even research, disregard facts and just label people whatever sounds good in a soundbite or will stir up the consumer of the media, as much as possible, what else can the MSM be wrong about?!
The only way out is repentance in Christ Jesus. He is the stairway to heaven. Every other way is a deception and a thief. And there is no LIGHT in them.
I would like to suggest that this Ted talk speaker wasn't trying to be a news source, or a source of factual "analysis" per se. I think the point he was trying to make, using examples of "opposition perceptions" as irony to make the larger point of how different views can engage in discussions and become neighbors and better human beings.
Travis Decker The number of people in the audience are a fraction of the viewers that will see the speech. Posted to Ted a forum for any idea. Cheap point buddy, or just not thought out
Trolls are trolls man. Everytime I get on xbox live I get called the N word like 8 times.. I'm white. My point is, the troll doesn't care what color you are, they just think it's funny.
How come black people get to call each other N word and it is not taken derogatorily? THAT is the racist thing. I want to call my black friends the N word and not be judged through racist minds. :-)
@Joel W Thanks for the advice, but it was rhetorical to point out the deep racism in many black minds that excludes whites from using the same language as they do and demonizing us when we do. For example, some of them may say it with anger toward each other and it is never thought of as racist. Yet, because my skin is not black, if I say it with anger it is not just an angry statement. It becomes charged with racism, because they are judging me by my skin being different than them. So in fact, though I might be angry and use that word, if there is no difference in valuation based on skin color, those instantly judging me as racist are in fact doing so by deeply held racist cultural practices. In fact, the N-word is technically racist ALL the time, regardless who uses it, because it literally means "black". So by using it toward a black person is to draw attention to their skin color and whether you are black or white, when you use it you are drawing attention to race. By modern definitions, that is racist, though I would disagree that simply drawing attention to distinctions between people is racist. Is it a type of discrimination to notice I am bald or that you have blonde hair? It is simply distinguishing a fact of the physical world of appearances. Racism only enters in when there is some sort of difference of valuation based on these physical appearances. So unless the N-word is used to indicate a difference in valuation, it cannot be racist. If it is used as an angry swear word, that does not make it racist. Anger does not equal racism. If you can show that the person expressed a difference in valuation of that person based directly on their skin color (whether the same or different than yours), then you have racism and if there was an attempt to harm based on this difference in valuation, then there is a hate crime. If words are used that threaten a person harm based on this valuation, then this is hate speech. If you are missing any of these elements it is neither a hate crime, not hate speech.
Let me tell you what problem I have with your speech. Do not ever call the story of slavery a cliff note of history. It is an entire month of study in e very history class I've ever taken. I was told all my life being a poor white boy from a single mother; that I was a slave owner, white devil, white boy, etc. So fighting old racism with renewed opposite. I remember the anger I saw in my great grandfather's face when I asked how many slaves our family had. As even teachers would state that all white people had slaves. He told me of my family's history, when we come to the country and why. It is too long to write out here. At first, I felt awe and reverence for my family. It was soon replaced by anger and resentment that everything I had been taught for the past 11 years was a big lie. It wasnt but a year or two later I gained access to the internet. At the library, and school, etc. (Cue dial up tone) and I did a LOT of research. So now let me tell you about cliff notes. That only the top 5% of society had slaves. Then that they were sold by Spaniards, who bought them from fellow Africans. At places called slave castles of the African coast, and how only 20% of the slaves were sold to the Americas. The rest went to South America. Why had I never even heard of that at all, I asked myself. The story shoved down my throat was Harriet Tubman and the white oppressors she ran from. The cliff notes are the everyday hard working normal WHITE people that helped them achieve freedom. So then research into where certain biases of the 50s were researched. Newspapers, radio stations, and books (Jim Crowe). Wait.. the same companies owned by the rich people who had slaves from the day. I knew then, it was the rich putting the poor at war with each other. The news media still does this today. Cliff notes of history are of how every culture has had slavery for many many generations. And that America was the country that made it illegal for rich people to own slaves, in a shorter amount of time than any other culture. And then I found how many African countries still practiced slavery to that day. Which disturbed me greatly as to the mantras you'd hear about "Motherland" and "Our People." Don't tell me about footnotes of history, and misinformation taught in schools. You cant defeat racism by saying its now alright to practice it yourself. Your actual care over slavery is the footnote, your ability to use it as an excuse and scapegoat is the story. Even though your story was heartfelt, you're still blinded to me. As you forgive us "white people," go forgive your own people and free them from the oppression of being misinformed.
Awesome blog ! The worst thing done to the african American was when given their "freedom " the white ppl with the money would not hire them and effectively caused poverty . The stupid solution was to create welfare for the women thusly caterating the men ! They (AfAmer) were very religious to our Christian God and were treated 2nd class at the church ! They worked very hard as slaves and were never lazy . The disgrace is that this nation has never acknowledged the real tragedy . Not giving honest hard working men a means to support their families and we all have been paying for that till now . Maybe acknowledging the wrong would be a step to making it better

As a relatively conservative Australian university student I’ve really noticed this eco chamber trap. My conservative friends often don’t really know much about the other side, nor do my more left wing friends. I think that if we all managed to talk, have compassion and remember that we actually all want the best outcome for everyone we might find ourselves in a less polarised world. Psychologically it’s so much harder to listen to things you don’t agree with. We search for viewpoints that affirm our opinions but this is the trap. We need to search for things that oppose our opinions. Challenge yourself and your views. Look into what you believe from the other side with an open mind.

I don't get it.
Same here. Unlike some of the other talks, this was fairly moderate. Sure, he talked about BLM a little and called Infowars in the same category as alt-right, but that wasn't really the purpose of the talk. It was about getting out of echo chambers and learning the true background behind those you disagree with.
People are too divided to see reason right now, that probably includes both you and me in some cases. If you don't completely agree with them you are against them.
I dont understand why people hate and disagree with this talk. He makes valid points which go against both the left and the right and generally does not overstate his opinions. This is the reason many people hate and disagree -- he says things that go against their tribal beliefs and identity. It's sad, bnut the power of the echo chambers is that we get further indoctrinated into our own beliefs and demonize people outside of them.
I get it, but it's quite meta. These are some of the people in the echo chambers. The people in the left echo chamber are furious and trying to avoid more videos like this, and the people on the right echo chamber are doing the same thing, but responding to different points. The eternal curse of being a moderate. :) I mean this guy essentially went from left wing to centrist, and I applaud him for that.
Theo E.J. Wilson describes courageous conversations, not shouting matches, as key to making real progress. He also, implicitly is endorsing the notion that we need to seek to understand each other rather than simply seeking to convert or overwhelm each other. His description of how social media algorithms exacerbate the divisiveness we see in our society today is chilling. These algorithms, designed to maximize commercial opportunities, are also maximizing divisions between people. They segregate each of us into our tribes and keep us there. The only way Mr. Wilson got around them was to create a fake identity that was his opposite. Only then could he even begin to uncover the sources of the viewpoints he was hearing from those who disagreed with him. Only then could he realize the commonality between the angry white men and the angry black men. His message of seeking to understand is worth spreading. I don't what else he and I might agree or disagree on, but I definitely agree with his call for courageous conversations to gain understanding. Understanding is the first step toward unity.
Joseph Stalin and Karl Marx represented communism = left, as opposed to Nazis and fascists. Extreme ideology is always dangerous no matter which side of the spectrum.
I joined a facebook group opposite of my race and political spectrum and learned that probably the majority of the other members really wanted to have meaningful conversations. There was a small but highly active subgroup that quickly resorted to taunts and mockery the moment any counterpoint to their preconceived notions were raised. Ironically they would quickly stereotype me and call me a racist bigot even though I never, ever said anything racist. It was nice to see so many of their more open-minded peers support me, though. Even though they disagreed with me the vast majority of the time, they still said they were enlightened by my perspective, as I was theirs. The more squeaky "activist" subgroup ultimately got me kicked out and banned, but it was very informative while it lasted.

tbh what a lot of people don't understand is that democrats and republicans are both very conservative. The political parties have a lot more in common than you think. And like a lot of things, it's not a straight line from left to right; it's not a binary. One of the biggest mistakes humanity has made is to lump tens of thousands of complex, individual people into sections. This man does make some points. - an anarchist
Tim Wise should have been a bigger bomb than Teeky Sheeky. Tim Wise is one of the biggest white haters on the planet. If Theo is really encouraging white conservatives to seek out voices like Tim Wise, then he forgot(or deliberately dropped) many of the points he made in his own presentation. Alt-Right and other flavors of white neoreactionism were spawned in reaction to the hatred of people like Tim Wise. T.Nashid is a punchline to a joke, but Tim Wise is a very real, and very monstrous, monster.
Lost me when I checked the story behind Alonzo Ashely. He was at a zoo and said "I am a lion" before attacking Zoo staff and then police when they turned up. Police officers shocked him with a tazer. The autopsy revealed that he had done cocaine in the last day. How people protest about that I honestly don't know.
I'd be surprised if 1% of the people being called alt-right are actually alt-right. The people being accused of being Nazis that are actual nazis is far less than 1%.
@@Bonzi_Buddy, the liberals who are calling conservatives nazis are the nazis themselves. they certainly display all the characteristics of nazis, and all the tactics used by them, that's for sure.
As a 33 year old frustrated white guy, I have done extensive research on many right leaning groups trying to find my place.. The Alt Right gets a bad rap, But if you read into it, They don't hate black people, They dont want to have slaves, But they especially don't want to be bombarded by black culture constantly. They are part of a group that celebrates whiteness. Think about it, If all white folks adopted black culture, it wouldn't be black culture anymore. Some people are perfectly content being white and enjoying things that appeal to their whiteness. We should accept that we're different and move forward. We should all be proud of our culture but don't expect everyone to accept or understand the struggles of another race. Those shared struggles are what binds us in our seperate groups. Yes.. White people struggle too..
Cody the Barber I agree. I'm not white, but preserving culture and history is a chief interest that should be shared. Especially since every minority has groups that hate white people for 'cultural appropriation' and then call white people racists for trying to find their own culture.
11:27 - 12:00 IS SO IMPORTANT! As a conservative straight white male, it has been difficult to explain this to my liberal and communist friends. They have been convinced to see the world in different classifications of color. They've been trained to silence themselves if they're white and that the voices that come from darker skin is inherently more valuable. I've tried telling them that there is only the human race, and to say that group a is different than group b is to say that one groupe is more human or less human and that is the true divisive evil. Sure there are different countries and cultures and life experiences, but to catagorize ourselves based on skin tone, is to aid those in power who seek to divide and distract us and to keep us week so they can keep their power.
Dude I got ghosted by my half of my family for not having thier views and because I wasn't "black enough" from a young age I always wanted to be for equality.

Oh, my dear! That doesn't happen to white people in America! They have privilege, dontchaknow?
Individuals are the enemy of Post-modernism. As a white woman, I was the hungry child I described. One of my aunts accused my mom, her own sister, of starving us or saying we needed to be dewormed before spending the night so not to infect her fat, spoiled white children. We were just as white, but not fat. We were just as loved, but not spoiled. Her comments hurt. We were her blood, yet somehow she had privilege while we did not. My dad grew up picking cotton, yet he is white. Both of my parents had no flush toilet until they were well into their teens, yet they are white. I grew up cooking with wood and for heat, tending my own potbellied stove, yet I am white. In these hot and humid Oklahoma summer's I've seen people arrive in my state and faint. Literally drop from the 110 degree heat and 90% humidity yet we felt very lucky to share a fan and have a swamp cooler running in the kitchen. Again...white. White home, working (after he healed) father, loving mother, white white white. The only thing not white was my dirty feet.
My individual story destroys their made up fantasy, the one where every white person has advantages and every black or brown person is disenfranchised. The government surely hated the fact that my father refused any sort of welfare even to the detriment of his children. He's a prideful man and while the Carter years were miserable, once Reagan got elected, things got better.
Growing up the way I did made me a very independent person. I can see right through all of these us vs them games we're being pushed to play and while ingroup biases are completely natural for humans and animals, there's only one group everyone in this country belongs to that should matter.

You don't defeat racism by being racist.
Just laying it down there.
I guess that's the other side of things for you.
wow you are smart. and incredibly well-written, and i honestly enjoyed reading that. thanks.

There is too much money power and momentum in white guilt, abuse and shaming. It is a huge industry.
The response I got was, "I can't believe that over half the country is racist!"
I get on very well with the guy.
By the time I finished working with him, he would often say, "Well, as a fascist... and I know I'm not really a proper fascist..."
Is that progress? Or should I have taken your perspective and immediately stopped talking with him?
I disagree with his politics but I think we can all agree there needs to be a conversation no matter the ideology or side. Because if we don't talk all we have is violence and hate.
arthinugami too many "conversations" not enough actiob
There are little to no conversions you need a plan before you take action.
the biggest problem with this is that thought leaders on the left are convinced that they have all the answers and anyone who disagrees with them even slightly is branded a"nazi.

Diversity can be productive, if people stop playing "I'm the victim bow to me"
From my estimation, there's literally no practical benefits to racial/ethnic diversity, and I say that as an ethnic minority.
Diversity is division
defining minorities by skin and gender is to say that skin and gender define our thoughts. nothing could be more sexist and racist

Trolls are trolls man. Everytime I get on xbox live I get called the N word like 8 times.. I'm white. My point is, the troll doesn't care what color you are, they just think it's funny.
As a troll myself I can confirm this
How come black people get to call each other N word and it is not taken derogatorily?
Which disturbed me greatly as to the mantras you'd hear about "Motherland" and "Our People."
Don't tell me about footnotes of history, and misinformation taught in schools.
