Combatting Intolerance, Hate Crimes, and Islamophobia

  • U.S. Ambassador Michèle Taylor from the United States Mission to the UN Human Rights Council hosted a side event during HRC 57 featuring experts from the UN OHCHR, OSCE, EU, academia, civil society, and member states on best practices to Combat Intolerance, Hate Crimes, and Islamophobia.
    Panelists, including U.S. Ambassador at Large Rashad Hussain, discussed the rise in Islamophobia and anti-Muslim hatred and described domestic efforts to prevent and address intolerance. Experts from the European Commission, the OIC, OSCE and Sweden demonstrated their initiatives and best practices to counter Islamophobia and other forms of intolerance, discrimination and violence. OHCHR and academic experts provided insights on how to enhance collaboration to counter intolerance, discrimination and violence on the basis of religion or belief.
    Keynote remarks were given by U.S. Ambassador at Large Rashad Hussain, European Commission Coordinator on combating anti-Muslim hatred Marion Lalisse, OSCE Personal Representative of the Chairpersonship on Combating Intolerance and Discrimination against Muslims Ambassador Evren Dağdelen Akgün, Special Envoy to the OIC and for Interreligious and Intercultural Dialogue of Sweden, Ulrika Sundberg and Professor Ahmed Shaheed, Essex University. The event also included participation by the Missions of the EU, Pakistan, Türkiye, the UK and civil society.
