I love how she showed the little children at the end with bags being passed to them symbolizing how parents can pass their "baggage" down to their children...creating a never ending cycle
When I was a kid, my parents always used to talk about how Erykah was so weird and always changed the channel when her music came on. But now as an adult im seeing all these subliminals and deeper messages in her music. It's a shame my parents didn't let me watch.
I didn’t grow up in the 90s but I definitely felt in my spirit that many black people called her weird. It’s unfortunate but we’re actually wired to judge the ones in our group who express themselves in a different way, even if they’re uplifting our community 🥴. Lol her music is also good as hell but, I do understand everyone has different music taste.
The thing that I like most about this video, besides its truthful message, are the different complexions Black women have. What happened to the days when Black women of every complexion was appreciated? Love yourself first!!!!
gemni690 I agree with you that people should love themselves first.. but that's the problem with a lot of black american girls/boys/women/men.. they don't love themselves nor their own skin complexion. A lot of black americans are quick to tear down another sista/brotha who may be light skinned or dark skinned.. because they themselves are insecure people. I believe if people loved themselves they wouldn't need and seek validation from anyone else nor would they care about whether or not a black mans preference may be light skinned black females over dark skinned black females.
Thank you Junglepussy for turning me onto Erykah Badu. Sometimes it takes the right person to open your mind to something, and I'm super grateful for discovering my love for Erykah. Gonna be a wholesome & healing journey.
Ex Lover Yes she did. Dre did sample his original Xxplosive from Soul Mann & the Brothers - Bumpy's Lament. But Badu borrowed the exact beat Dre made with that sample and made it her own with her new melody and lyrics.
This is the music we need to hear today, music with a message to let go of the toxicity built up over our lifetimes. Not clinging to a love unworthy or unhealthy, just for the sake of love. We don't have to cause ourselves pain for the ones we love. Sure times get tough, and the road ahead is unpaved and bumpy. But find someone who holds your hand through the storm, not someone who leaves you weather the storm on your own. Actions will always speak louder than words. When someone shows you their true colors, dont try to repaint them to what you wish they were. Do you boo boo 💖
Peep the little girl in the green, that was me :) I don't remember much, but I do remember that each of the little girls were supposed to look like each of the older ones. I remember I wanted to wear red, which so happened to be Erykah haha. From what my mom told me, Erykah was very nice and she took pictures with all of us. Such a classic song.
is it really you! she looks like you to. you must be so proud of yourself! but, most importantly thank your parents for giving you the opportunity to be in this powerful video because all kids dont get this opportunity. SO BE THANKFUL.
The message in the song is: Ladies, know your self worth, be independent of yourself and always be ready to hold your own when in a relationship and he suddenly wants to be free and don't cling onto misfortunes in your life. Put them behind you and move on.
Respectfully Ms.Dee from one man’s point of view of this song. I feel she was saying Women should heal completely from all trauma not just relationships with men but also relationship with moms dads uncles aunties cousins boss men co workers siblings childhood friends the neighbor next door the creep up the street all of them before entering another relationship dragging them bags into every new situation might cause her to miss a good thing with a good man because she touting around all that baggage of her past. She can have a great man that loves her but if she doesn’t love herself enough to let those bags go no one can do that for her. Self love makes it better. I’m a black black man I mean like ghetto black I love my sisters but it’s super hard just being that. We don’t wanna deal with all that shhh too I’m sorry to the 90’s babies in my life let it go I’m a great man but all this crap you brought with you starting to spill over into my man cave😂😂😂
Lol no the message in the song is telling women to deal with your trauma so you don't weigh down yourself and others to point that you can't accept love. Deal with your shit so you can love and be loved freely.
Nice to not be alone. Took a while for the song to fully sink in and resonate. This song and something my auntie said to me about not carrying other people's baggage has inspired me to paint again.
Let it go…this time last year I was trying to do everything to keep my mom feeling safe and comfortable. My mom passed in February 24, 2021 so I’ve learned to let go of a bunch of things
I finally understand what this song means, its not about a person carrying objects, its about the negative thoughts traditions we hold and conjure in our minds that ultimately hold us back from manifesting what we souly desire
I love how she teaches black woman self love in this song, and at the same time doesn't disrespect the black male either. She covers so much in this song in just a few words! She truly was a gift to the black community!

This song is really about a person missing out on a life carrying their problems on their shoulders taking it out on the world instead of loving herself what's for you is for you and if anybody come in the middle of that that's not for you other word accept me for who I am and if you can't kick rocks that's my take on this song

So many layers. Yes. Unburden yourself. Release all things no longer serving you, that you may become freer and lighter of spirit. "Pack light." But also... Pack LIGHT. yes this was the song back in the day and as an adult I was listening to this one day and that's when it hit me lol. My mom us to tell me all the time and still do, "keep living." You might not understand right then but you will eventually you will
Feelin this in my soul on this cold Sunday morning. Brings tears to my eyes that at 21 I’ve held on to such baggage already. But working on letting it all go for MYSELF. May God give me the strength I need. Let’s do better ladies. Gotta start packin light! Much luv & blessings to you all! 🙏🏽💙
I'm just blown away by her ability to craft a song that blends every day life with spirituality so seamlessly. She's given me more than any university course I've ever taken. She's a legend.
Serious question. If you could go back with only the knowledge of how E.B.'s music and university would affect you, would you still go to university? I don't know what you went to school for but I don't see the correlation in the two. Music is a major part of my life, it's helped me find out who I am as a person but it can't teach me about my career in hvac which I also love. I hope you don't find offense in me trying to understand
the media really didn't want women like Erykah and Lauryn Hill to enfluence the youth so they replace them with Nikki Minaj and idk today's artists so I'll just leave it at that. smh.
Jackie Correale As Charlotte Perkins Gilman stated a century ago, our society has become more and more patriarchal, or as she says, androcentric. It's a shame than society still doesn't understand and isn't doing anything about this.
I JUST PEEPED TODAY in 2018 that All her selves and colors are representing the Chakras? and letting go of the bags is the key to allowing ur energy to flow thru your Chakras!
Too bad most women of "color" Can't see the forest for the tree!!! Nor do they attempt to go beyond what they have been traditionally taught! In order to let it go..... Breathe.. Meditate... Elevate!!!!
I'm a black male and at a predominately white college, and listening to Erykah's voice calms my spirit in a way when I get tired of my environment. I feel like the messages she instilled in her music then would be so beneficial to young black women nowadays. Another thing that captivates me is her beauty and body, which is completely the opposite from what we see in music nowadays. Sadly music, (especially rap), has become about the lighter skin tone, and twerking. Smh, Erykah is truly an angel, and her success and impact will never be duplicated again.
***** not at all saying you have to be a particular race, what I was trying to emphasize is that as a young man Erykah represents a totally different style and fluency in presenting her music compared to the music nowadays. And for clarity purposes a lot of white people at my college listen to today's rap and r&b music and have no concept of the artists who laid the foundation and actually made real music. It's like comparing Rae Sremmurd to Bone Thungs N Harmony. There's a big discrepancy there as quality goes. But regardless man I appreciate your feedback and was not trying at all to make this a race thing. Stay up, bro.
Ok, so after 14 years of hearing this song, I NOW know she is referring to mental baggage. Thought she meant ladies that like to wastefully buy lots of bags. Lool. Thank God for spiritual enlightenment, doesn't matter when it comes as long as it comes.
Hahaha. I'd heard the song before, but was too young to know what she was talking about. Heard it last night for the first time in years and I realized what she was saying, as I was listening to it. But better late than never, right? Haha. It really is a great song because of the lyrics and how it's not totally obvious what she's saying.
Thanks to this lady I stopped chemicals in my head. And started appreciating my Natural Hair and the WORLD OF WRAPS...ALL COLORS SHAPES AND SIZES.... PEACE TO YOU MY SISTA..ONE LOVE
The visuals as I am now awakening are so symbolic. from the children being passed "bags" to the soul food having a death sign on it, to the fact that all the bags ladies always seem to be in each other company....misery loving company. This video is gold
I remember I was in the 4th grade when this song came out and I knew every word, now at the age of 25, I understand each and every word. This song is true gem. #PackLight
I've always appreciated Erykah taking what might be the most misogynistic song in rap music and use the beat to address women's issues. Flipped it on 'em
Ari Baby nah you trippin. You can appreciate one without hating on the other. Queen’s song is not trash at all & I’m not even a stan before you start with some bs 😐
@@kayylovee2053 I honestly didn’t care for it.... and the way it flopped makes me think more people agree with me than you. I like some of queens songs but She has put out some horrible songs (good morning text, away from you, etc) just cuz u like queen doesn’t mean u have to lie...

Dr. Dre sampled this shit for Xxplosive! So dope!
Wolf Wang actually Erykah Badu sampled this from him.

Yes she did. Dre did sample his original Xxplosive from Soul Mann & the Brothers -
Bumpy's Lament. But Badu borrowed the exact beat Dre made with that sample and made it her own with her new melody and lyrics.
So Badu sampled Dre, and Dre sampled Soul Mann & the Brothers who covered the original Isaac Hayes song.

Sadly, some won't even get the message. I used to love this song, and still do. #MissBadu
Same here
Everybody wakes up in their own time
the media really didn't want women like Erykah and Lauryn Hill to enfluence the youth so they replace them with Nikki Minaj and idk today's artists so I'll just leave it at that. smh.
Jackie Correale you already know
Jackie Correale you are right they rather portray the women as hoes... smh
nicki doing a great job.
Jackie Correale As Charlotte Perkins Gilman stated a century ago, our society has become more and more patriarchal, or as she says, androcentric. It's a shame than society still doesn't understand and isn't doing anything about this.
Jackie Correale Nikki actually paid for some of her fans college tuition on twitter if they had straight A's
Semay Evans that doesnt make her a positive role model
Who here after pack lite dropped?
Yes! had to come back to what inspired it!!!! I love them both❤
YESSSS😂😂

@God's Child Both Dre and Badu was sample by the original "Bumpy's Lament" - Soul Mann & The Brothers.
"Girl I know sometimes its hard and we cant let go. Someone hurt you ol so bad inside, you cant deny it you cant stop crying"
I know this song has a deeper meaning but it always plays in my head when I'm taking the groceries into the house :)
Grocery bag lady? Let it go let it go let it go let it go...

Clear out those chakras!
😂😂😂
Candymonster but not the Louis Vuittons hang on to those
Too bad most women of "color" Can't see the forest for the tree!!!
Rem Harris I love her so much.
I feel exactly the same way. Music for the soul
+Rem Harris Then why didn't you go to a predominately black college if it bothers you?
***** Prolly had to settle for what he could get into honestly.
This song literally sends chills with it's POWERFUL MESSAGE
"someone almost walked off with all my stuff and the one with it don't even know he's got it"

Kourtney Franke yes! I wish more women embraced their natural hair. I love seeing women’s hair in wraps, fro’s,etc. Different is so beautiful
Flipped it on 'em
sorry, I'm not aware of the song you are referring to. mind naming the song?

King James damn, I learn so much from this song. But the comments even help me understand how it means so much more.
I know.Erykah is deep.
And peep the play on words during the hook. "Pack light"::bag lady. Blew my mind once it sunk, so clever
