Rich your work is beautiful. I love the way you use your spray bottle to soften edges. Trying but haven’t mastered the technique yet. I get puddles of water. that washes away everything.
Love the flower paintings. Vids have really helped me loosen up my work. There is a lovely balance between looseness and detail in your work which I strive to perfect and find my own niche. Many thanks Ric.
Truly beautiful I enjoy watching your tutorials so much. Easy to understand with clear explanation. I love all your paintings and I love the way you used the spray bottle. Very cool !!! Thank you Rick for sharing your wonderful talent.
Gorgeous painting. And an extremely informative step-by-step demo and narration of your creative process. The loose, transparent style that your paintings demonstrate is what I feel is the essence of watercolor and with your instruction it seems like someone like me could strive to achieve that style in my paintings. Thanks!
Really love watching how your spray bottle diffuses the pigment. I don't seem to manage that when I try... but I know its the paper that I use... which is not what you use. I get a great deal of pleasure and leaning from watching your tutorials. Thank you.
Thank you so much for this wonderful insight into your painting methodology. Your explanation of how you are accomplishing the end result is excellent!
That is very pretty. The leaning toward the red shade over the other creates a nice blush without the high contrast. That is something I need to work on. Thank you Rick for the narrated study.
Thanks for the clarity of instruction; I find it really helpful and understandable. Love the loose, but finished style of your work.....very appealing; something to aspire to and you make it seem doable. Appreciate you sharing your talent and knowledge.
Thank you for your tutorial. Your work is beautiful & your teaching style is extremely helpful. I would like to gain more knowledge in composition & values. I subscribed to your channel today.
Your art is breathtaking. Love the way you paint and your excellent commentary and explanations. You’re a brave man with that spray bottle lol! I want to learn negative painting (is that how you always paint? - I haven’t had the pleasure of watching every vid) so I really appreciate tuts geared toward the beginner.
Thank you ! I have elements of negative painting in most of my work, even those that lean towards realism. I was walking through the art store one day and saw the spray bottle I use. It looked handy, so I got it. I used it on the fly to soften some edges in a painting and have been using it ever since.
I have tried this. I had trouble making a dark tone using just the red and green. I ended up with a $%^# brown! I guess you have leaned toward green more on the dark value.
What type (brand/model) of thin brush is that you are using to lift paint at minute 26 of the lesson? I don't see that brush included in your list of materials website. I really enjoy your use of negative painting. It is of great value to my learning to see you in action. Thank you.
It's not available anymore but it's about a 1/2 inch angled nylon brush. Any nylon angled nylon brush about that size should work fine. Just make sure it has a pretty good edge.
@@RickSurowiczWatercolor Thanks for the reply. I'm giving your daisy demos a try, as well as the sunflower. I enjoy your technique. I'm still searching for mine and yours is holding my interest. Guess an online course is in my future (after my current woodworking projects). Thanks again.
love your tutorials what make water colour paint do u use your paper is it cold press, I'm having ago with negative painting I'm having trouble getting water to paint ratio and it looks harsh or muddy any ideas I use professional paper and paints and have been doing painting for ages I love it but its hard to use do think tubes are better any ideas I can try
It's difficult to say without seeing an example. You can send it to contactrsurowiczart@gmail.com. If you go to my studio page, I have information about all the material I use including paint and paper. Here is the link: rsurowiczart.com/studio/
Yes, I would say I have a loose style. I try to interpret and suggest rather than render. You are correct about the negative painting. Outside of the center of the flowers, I've done very little to them. They are defined by the negative space.

Hi. Love this painting style. How do you keep your paper from warping? Mine warps even though it is taped. Thank you.
Thank you, enjoyed very much.
Glad you enjoyed it Essie !

Glad you're trying this Patricia. I did lean towards green, but it's with a heavy concentration of pigment
So pretty
Thank you Romana !

Hi Rick, would you describe your paintings as a Loose style versus detail style. Am I right in saying that the negative painting defines the flowers.
Yes, I would say I have a loose style. I try to interpret and suggest rather than render. You are correct about the negative painting. Outside of the center of the flowers, I've done very little to them. They are defined by the negative space.
Can you plz tell us about the paper you are using here?
I am using Lanaquarelle 140 LB Cold Press watercolor paper taped to my board.
Thanks
People can’t sketch on their own? Not sure how to reconcile knowing how to paint with not knowing how to draw 🤔
