The Forclaz Trek 100 Down Jacket is a great value for money, possibly the bet down jacket you can buy when you don't want to overspend.
After using it for over a year it holds up very well.
This down jacket is relatively light weight which is achieved by removing all unnecessary features.
In many ways this jacket competes with other popular jackets like:
Mountain Hardwear Ghost Whisperer,
MontBell Superior Down Jacket
REI Co-op 650 Down Jacket 2.0
Arc'teryx Cerium SL Hoody
Patagonia Down Sweater Hoody
Rab Microlight Alpine

Thank you for shouting out Decathlon, there really should be more people talking about them here on RUclips. I love Decathlon, the value for money on many of their products is unbeatable. You really have to look at the highest of high end brands and many multiples of Decathlon prices to find something better. For my whole life, you could get good quality hiking stuff only from expensive hiking stores, there was no budget option. Years ago, I bought my down jacket, a budget option, 600 fill from Warmpeace and 340g, and I think it was €125. At that time, that was the cheapest jacket of decent quality I could find in any hiking store. My father bought the Trek 100 jacket about a year ago for just €40 and it's been amazing. I tried it out, it's warmer, lighter and fits me better. Size L and I measured it at 292g. Planning to buy it before my next hiking trip, it's now 47€, but that is still unbeatable value. I've just spotted a new tent they introduced, not yet for sale, but it's the MT900 2-person trekking pole tent in white, it weighs 1300g and costs €180, can't wait until it goes on sale so that I can buy it.
They have good stuff but I think it’s important to judge in on a case by case bases. They’re not as specialised and some of their products are not so great. Will try to do more videos on that soon 👌🏼
Regarding the "Tennisball method". From what I know you don't put the balls into the washing machine but in the dryer. The logic behind it is that the wet down after the wash is clumped together. The tumbling tennisballs move it around more than just tumble drying would and help it to fluff up while drying.
From experience i know you can airdry as well but really have to manually shuffle every half an hour or so to aid even drying and prevent clumping.
Yes the idea behind that is good indeed. Helps to restore the natural fluff. I did that only in the dryer indeed with the result mentioned in the video. You didn’t have the rubbery smell?
Agreed, don't put tennis balls in the wash; just use a cold, delicate cycle. Three tennis balls in the dryer gently pummels the down so it unclumps and gets evenly distributed within the jacket's baffles. Never had a problem with a rubbery smell, but the balls I keep specifically for drying down-filled items have been exposed to air for years. I guess if you used brand-new balls straight out of a vacuum sealed cannister, there would be a strong smell.
@@TheAtypicalOne yeah there was indeed. Other solutions are much better. Surprised Decathlon recommends that method.
@@TheAtypicalOne +1 on this. Old tennisballs if you have - brand new ones smell. But these spikey massageballs are even better. Just need something little, round and heavy in order to "massage" the down.
Nice review.
No problems washing my Rab, I use mountain warehouse down wash and it comes with three plastic balls with no smell.
I went for the Rab jacket only because I use their sleeping bags.
Ahh good top. Will look into that next. I wanted to get a Rab one but just couldn’t justify getting rid of this one. It still works so well 🙏
I purchased this jacket and was very impressed with the quality. Medium slim so I followed the instructions and purchased a size up and got a large. When I got the jacket I put it on it seemed to fit very nice so I cut the 50 tags out of the inside of the jacket. All dangling from the side. Unfortunately, after wearing the jacket I realized that when I sat down it was extremely restrictive. If I wrote in a car or went out to eat, I would have to unzip the jacket before I could sit down. This would make it impossible to wear layering or even a sweater. I reached out to decathlon to see if they would be willing to exchange but unfortunately because I removed the tag even though I still have it, they refused. To say that this jacket runs small is an understatement. If you purchase this jacket which I highly recommend, it's a great value. Especially if you can get it on sale. My only warning is to make sure you don't cut the tag out until you forward a few days and you're comfortable with the fit. Taken to consideration. When you do put it on then it may fit fine. But can you layer? Can you wear a sweater under it? If the answer is no and it gets too tight then you definitely want to exchange it. Again, I'm a medium slim and I purchased a large but it looks like the extra large is the one that would suit me.
Indeed it’s not great if you want to layer up. I use it mostly as second layer and on colder nights in the summer. Hope you can still enjoy it!
exactly this. i tried out in store today and i usually wear s. even M is quite fitted for me. so some has to size up definitely for this.
the tennis ball hack does work, just use them when tumble drying
Cool cool cool
Nice review. Thanks for showing the pocket storage feature. I love mine. I have a 2XL.
Thanks 🙏
Did you just buy one? I hear people saying it’s different since a few months
@@OutdoorPrep Yes, within the last two weeks. I saw JustinOutdoors and DanBecker review them last year.
what is your body hight and weight for the 2xl?
I need to wash and impregnate mine too. So thanks for the tip! Great jacket
Heee dragon 💪🏼
Do you have the same jacket or a different one?
I have exactly the same jacket... and 5 other ones. I took my Patagonia Micro Puff with synthetic insulation to the Kungsleden.
Hi Rob, more good content here thank you. Great to get a look around this jacket and for you to share you experience of what happened when washing it.. Jacket nicely highlighted and explained.... ATB Tom
Thanks Tom. I ran out of tents for now 😉
I had a bad experience with this jacket. I bought a size above what I needed, but the stitches under the arm split. I like Decathlon products normally, I own a lot of them, but I went for a north face and a raeburn designs down jacket. quite expensive, but very high quality.
Hmmmm mine split once as well when I was changing inside a small tent 🤷🏻♂️
Fix was easy enough though
Got a TNF down jacket for climbing 👌🏼 very nice but a very different price point indeed
@@OutdoorPrep Did you fix it by sewing or other method?
Just received the jacket. Great quality, better than expected!
It’s surprisingly great indeed! At 1/4 price 💪🏼
Tense ball work great been doing it for years the sercret is low heat then no smell
Good input - thanks 🙏
Here in the U.S. I did ordered and they using now a shell that it is not as shiny as yours, I now because I had previous versions, I asked about it and the response was they changed the shell material, now, seems weaker and more fragile, and more feathers sticking out, seems they are cutting corners
Oh that’s good to know. Thanks for sharing. Too bad if they’re really doing that :/
Tut, came to watch a few reviews on the Forclaz before buying. I'll stay away now that they've changed the outer material
It would be a shamed. I will try to have a look at it.
I love the smell of tennis balls in the morning. Smells like...victory.
well then you know what to do :D
you like the smell of balls in the morning... hm...
Expensive brands like ARC’TERYX, Patagonia and North Face are expensive for numerous reasons, one being quality. Decathlon products appear value for money when looking at features and price, but not so much when looking deeply at quality. They don’t have that polished look that the expensive brands have. If you can look past the non-premium look and feel, you can have yourself affordable and functional clothing.
In most cases that’s true - but this specific jacket has a more premium feel than the price would suggest.
Brilliant . Thank you
🙏
They have one without a hoodie, i bought it as a midlayer for skiing
Great! Must be new 👍🏽
Hi Rob, thanks for a great review. Was that the blue or black you were wearing please? Thanks
Glad you liked it. It’s the blue one. Cheers
good review
Cheers!
Great review :-)
Thanks for taking the time to comment - appreciate it
Looks good on you:)
Hoping this will kickstart my modelling career :)
How tall are you? Im probably buying it online and I saw many reviews saying that sizing up is a must
That’s not my experience. I’m 196 size 56 mostly and this is XL. Many other brands I need to get XXL.
What is your height and weight? The xl looks like it fits well
Sizes are the same as normal clothing I’d say. 90% of the time I wear XL. Sometimes XXL
196/100
I didn’t know about the self containment! Cool. « Whats in the jacket? » 😂
With RDS you know what’s in the jacket - sort of 🤷🏻♂️
I’ve been wearing mine for a few hours. It’s losing feathers. I returned the synthetic because it arrived with patches of discoloration.
Oh that’s too bad. A few feathers here and there can happen, but down should stay in
Does it run small? like if you are L you should order XL?
If you’re planning to wear a sweater underneath then yes, size UP
Hi...can i wear this under my motorcycle riding jacket??
Maybe.. Would also consider a synthetic jacket because your heavy motorcycle jacket can compress the down and with that it's not as warm.
@@OutdoorPrep alright thanks
Can you comment on the sizing? What height/weight are you, if you don't mind - and what size jacket are you wearing? I would like to get this, but cannot determine if I should get Large or Xtra Large. I have seen reviews this jacket sizing runs "small" - do you agree?
It can be a bit tight if you want to wear a thick sweater underneath - get a size larger than what you usually have. I use it on top of my base layer mostly. Check out the website for detailed sizing information 👍🏽
@@OutdoorPrep I am 6', 200# - I got the XL. I went with the XL because I have broad shoulders. I generally test jackets out with the Tommy Boy "little coat" test LOL: if I can easily cross my arms in front of my chest without feeling super tight pulling across my back/lats/arm pits, it passes the test. The XL size passed this test very well. I have seen a few comments in reviews (like yours) about the armpits tearing - I think I would def accidentally tear the size L armpits The mid section could be slightly trimmer for me - but I don't mind it. The overall jacket length is "good" - maybe a couple inches long for me, not a huge deal. The sleeve length is perfect - I can tuck my hands inside the sleeves if it were really cold without yanking/pulling anything, and the wrist cuff elastic is super comfortable. To sum up, I give this 8/10 for sizing, and 10/10 for price.
@@kevin7mckinney great to hear mate! Enjoy!
There's been claims of Decathlon not using the claimed weight of their down filling. The weight difference you discovered would seem to prove those statements. That's very unfortunate....
Oh that’s unfortunate indeed… thanks for sharing mate
@@OutdoorPrep Did you not look at another product? Decathlon has 2 variants of MT100, one with down filling and the other synthetic. On the website, for the down-filled one, I see 290 grams in size L.
@@mareksurkala What are you talking about the down filled one uses like 90g in a large
@@kk-qu1zc I am talking about the weight of the entire jacket, not the filling.
@@mareksurkalaGotcha you are 100% right
No way I didn’t know it folded into its own pocket
😉
How many -degree use this jacket
It’s personal preference but I’d say around zero if used with outer shell and around 5 if used alone
Bro my chest is 38" so what size should i purchase .
At 44” I’m XL
Consult the size chart on the website - I’m not sure bro
Good luck
WHATS IN THE JACKET
😂😂😂
Does it have interior pockets or a chest pocket?
No, just the two pockets on the sides.
What is the size of your jacket
XL
@@OutdoorPrep then should I buy L instead of M ...I am about 5feet 4 inches
What does down mean ?
Not up. Also like feathers 🪶
@@OutdoorPrep 🤣 alright
one year later its 20 € more 68,99
Yupp
They changed this jacket and now it has a worse, more fragile shell. Beware
Oh no really? Where do you live Bruno?
@@OutdoorPrep Brazil, but reading reviews on Decathlon's website there are Americans saying the same thing. The jacket has the same name (trek 100) and you can tell it's different from the picture. The shell is less shiny now
@@brunovaz oh that’s a shame. What happened to if it ain’t broken - don’t fix it. Thanks for letting us know!
@@OutdoorPrep The jacket is stil available, I bought one this week in Belgium. The confusion is that Forclaz has two jackets with almost the same name. One is a down jacket for 60 euro and the other is a synthetic for 35 euro.
@@audiosaurus6511 Thanks for letting us know!
I used squash balls but the jacket came out all flat and pressed down.
😂 sounds like it got squashed, buddy 🙈
@@OutdoorPrep you know me, always the joker 😉
Hahaha
Cost 70 Euros now. That is a 40% increase in 2 years. I know there is inflation, but not at 40% !!!!!!!
Yeah, but other brands still ask 200-250 🤷🏻♂️
