    I bought the Decathlon jacket last winter for hiking, for all the reasons Dan mentioned. The first couple hikes I ended up pulling it off because I was too warm. I wear a base layer, light fleece under this jacket and if it is snowing or raining I put a shell over top. I live in Canada and hike the Rockies. At -10 to -14c I start my hikes with only the base and light or medium fleece (be bold, start cold). So far only add the jacket when stopped for a break. All four layers I mentioned are from Decathlon and I would not change a thing!

    I've found the best way to compare puffer jackets is the create a little table that calculates the volume of lofted air that the fill can capture, as this equates to the warmth of the jacket. It's not an exact calculation of course because it assumes perfect theoretical maximum loft for a given fill weight and loft rating, and it doesn't factor in the jacket's ability to trap and maintain lofted warmed air versus leaking it, but it puts all jackets on a level playing ground so you can look at what you're dealing with. Combined with the total weight of the jacket you can also calculate a warmth to weight ratio.
    The Decathlon has a loft volume of 40.23 liters and the Mont Bell has a loft volume of 55.49 liters so there's a significant difference in warmth there. When you factor in the warmth to weight ratio the Decathlon scores at 0.14 (liters of lofted air per gram) whereas the Mont Bell is 0.23, so you're talking about a jacket that is almost 50% warmer with close to double the warmth to weight ratio, that's why it's five times as expensive.

      There is an online calculator where you can input the amount of down & fill power and it tells you how much of down would be needed for same warmth with different FP’s. It works really well

    • @ObjectiveMedia
      @ObjectiveMedia 2 месяца назад

      Yes. People in the community consistently underestimate the importance of fill power. The popular opinion is “fill weight matters, fill power doesn’t” when in fact you need BOTH numbers to estimate/calculate the potential warmth factor.

    I've got a Decathlon (under the older Trek moniker) and bought it on an older video Dan made comparing it to the MH Ghost Whisperer.
    I *can* afford whatever I'd like (I'm blessed and deeply grateful for my good fortune) but have yet to feel any need to change. I'm generally a cold-natured guy for some reason and this jacket never fails to impress me. I'm always plenty warm.
    Unlike Dan, I reserve mine for hiking, but like Dan, I haven't noticed any wear or degradation in the jacket.
    The euro zip is weird for Americans for a bit, but a lot of my motorcycle gear is the same; you get used to it pretty quickly.
    IMO this is the single best cost : $ piece of backpacking gear I have ever purchased.
    Thanks, Dan!

    I love my Forclaz. I actually bought it to be worn as a midlayer on my motorcycle in the cold, however it will be and already has been used for much more. It works SOOOOOO good as a midlayer on a bike though. I was riding at 50+ MPH in 34-40 degree Fahrenheit weather for over three hours and I stayed perfectly warm, which has never happened before, even with a heated sweatshirt. Worth every penny and I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one if I lost or damaged it.

    I have had the same forclaz also for 2-3 year. The price is great, very light and packable and is a fantastic fall jacket. However,found the outer shell fragile, I have several repairs to mine for tears on the trail. I live in Canada and have several puffy jackets. I don’t consider this a warm jacket. I wear it in the winter but only if it around 0C. I like it and wear it, but there are definitely cons. Depends what you want it for. Thx for the video

I’m super toasty, this thing is so warm. It’s 9oz in medium tall, don’t have to worry about it getting wet like down, no baffling so no cold spots, and it was under $200. Best damn jacket I’ve ever bought and in my opinion a way better than either of those or any down I’ve tried.

    Love the MT100, wore it for ages. I now have a Fjern Arktis Stealth - warmer and has a proper drawstring hood - and was cheap in a Sportpursuit sale, only £30-40 more than the MT100. Would be interested in a heads-up between those, cos I think the loft is similar.
    Totally agree about layering - I'd say get the MT100 and get a decent merino base layers, would make far more difference than a down jacket.

I've worn it camping, hiking, underneath a parka on the really cold days, the dog has slept on it and it still is lofty and warm. No tears and has even withstood the washer and dryer. I'm sure I'll be wearing it for years to come. I ended up with a true bargain.

    The Forclaz Trek 100 jacket was my go to for a 2022 AT thru hike. I did a comparison video a few months before I left where I compared the stats to the Mountain Hardwear Ghost Whisperer II jacket. The only real difference was the Forclaz used thicker material that was 2 OZ heavier...but hundreds of dollars less.
    When I ran into other people with the jacket, we were giving each other head nods because we knew the real deal about the jacket. Kind of like a secret club.
    Personally, I use the Forclaz Trek synthetic version. When you have been hiking all day in cold weather, you'll need to throw on an insulating layer at the end of the day. Down jackets have a tendency to lose insulation as your under layers start drying and evaporating, dampening the feathers. The synthetic version eliminates that issue for a couple of more ounces of weight.
    Also, the hood doesn't have a drawstring and you can get drafts. I found if you put up the hood and pull your buff over top, it will seal up the opening on the hood just fine.

Montbell's analogue to the Decathalon MT500 would be the Light Alpine Parka. If it helps I've used both and prefer the Montbell. It has much better construction, seemingly warmer and better features. The shell fabric on the Decathalon feels noticeably cheaper and the chest fitment is peculiar too, it's oddly tight there while loose elsewhere else. Which isn't a problem for me with other brands. The MT100 is the only stand out down jacket Decathalon offers other than their higher end Decathalon Simmond down jacket. As the MT900 uses that same crappy shell fabric as the MT500 and no longer has 800 fill down (like MT100 and MT500).

      @@chefgav1 I own both, they're both good jackets in their own right. The Montbell is noticeably better in stitching, design, DWR coating, shell fabric, fitment/cut and general attention to detail. The Montbell Alpine Down Parka in US size mediun has a 1000 down fill weight of 96 grams while the MT500 is 140g of 800 fill down. All else being equal that 96g 1000 down fill weight is equal to 120g of 800 fill down. The Decathalon jacket is a bit warmer, but the Montbell is surprisingly close, in practice whether that is a function of their unique stitching pattern or whatever else I am not sure. It's also half the weight at 236g vs 430g. The jackets are in different price categories and weight categories. The Decathalon jacket is good for what it costs, but the Montbell Plasma 1000D Alpine Parka is in a different category all together. The Plasma 1000D Alpine Down Parka is more in the weight class of the MT100 or Mountain Hardware Ghost Whisperer.

    You buy the gear you want and that works for you and is within your budget. I never upsell myself. Absent empirically verifiable data from an object lab, most gear videos are not that all helpful. A $100 (US) jacket with proper layering works great, and I don't worry or think about it getting damaged.

    Unless I need maximum warmth for truly cold conditions (like -f) I personally see the stitch through construction as a plus for puffy jackets. It helps them to breath a little bit.

    I bought the Decathlon jacket for 40eur in Summer.2023. Feels good till about 10deg C. After that it is cold. Doesn't stop wind in any way. A bit of wind and you are freezing.

    As a cold person, I absolutely did not feel as warm as Dan claims with the Decathlon. I needed a fleece with my puffy for freezing temps *while sitting around camp*, I don't wear a puffy while hiking. Still hard to beat on price to weight, unless you're looking at second-hand gear.

    My go-to down jacket for the past 5 or 6 years is the EMS Feather Pack hooded down jacket. Stupid name, great jacket. It’s heavier than the Decathlon (17.5oz for current models, my old model is 15oz), has 5oz 800FP hydrophobic goose down (mine has 5.5oz), and fabric is DWR 32g/m2 nylon. It’s quite a bit more expensive at a $250 MSRP. They’re almost always available for $125-150. If I was in the market for a new lightweight down jacket I’d probably give Decathlon a try if they have something with similar down fill numbers. Warmth is my first criterion, followed by packability and light weight.

    I have an old(80's) goose down jacket that constantly has down working its way out of it at the baffle stitching. Is this a regular thing with all puffy jackets?

  • @elliottseguin2430
    @elliottseguin2430 5 месяцев назад

    you said that the 1000 fill down is, for weight, the same insulation as 800 fill down, but it is’nt the case, since what makes down a good insulation is because it’s full of air, so it’s if loftier, like you said, it’s gonna be warmer. So since the mont-bell as just a bit less down than the decathlon the down is 25% more airy/lofty, it’s gotta be warmer(exception if the design has a flaw, which does’nt look like it’s the case)
