In this episode of Chip Stock Investor, we discuss our portfolio updates in the last quarter, including a full review of stocks we sold and what we bought to replace those sales.
But to start, we share our thoughts on books we've read in the last year, and their relevance to investing in the "AI era." Those books may not be what you think. Instead of investing books, we instead prefer to read about how the world operates and how things work. In particular, The Creative Act: A Way of Being by Rick Rubin was a favorite from 2023, and has far-reaching implications as generative AI and data commoditization (especially in the media industry) challenge what it means to be a human being.
We also discuss shifts towards the potential of new media platforms and digital content distribution, emphasizing content creator partnerships over traditional media models.
00:00 Introduction
01:08 Investment Books and Personal Reading Habits
03:05 Discussion on the Creative Act and the Digital Economy
04:13 The Impact of Technology on Traditional Media Companies
06:10 Investment Strategies and Portfolio Updates

Why you guys dont own palantir?
Been loading up on Enron, Theranos and radio shack stock 🙌🏽😁
What could go wrong!?! 😅
Love how you guys emphasized overlapping seemingly unrelated topics, to aid into building a logical, critical and deep thinking mindset. While I enjoy some of the classic investment books, I completely agree, tools that can be used for investing can be found in many areas of education and life in general.
Very true Thomas!
As someone in a creative field myself, I've always been put off by Disney's roughshod treatment of content creators and consequently have never owned their stock. Thanks for the book recs!
I REALLY REALLY appreciate this. I'm working right now, but SURELY I'll watch this later when I call it a day! Thanks!! Keep it up guys! I will forward this to my investor fellas. 👍🏼
We appreciate it, and hope you enjoy! Go make that dough!
Great video! I love you broadening beyond investing and speaking about self-improvement and becoming the best version of yourself. Investing and wealth building is only one aspect of the game, not the game. Well done!!
Thanks Shannon! Appreciate your own contributions to the community as well!
Thanks for the insight you share-
Loved hearing what you are reading -- great ideas for my reading list!
Lately I have been looking for books to help wrap my head around quantum computing. It seems that non-western tri-valent / multi-valent logic systems and fuzzy logic systems might be relevant here. In my misspent youth, I read parts of Theodore Stcherbatsky's "Buddhist Logic" where four possibilities are discussed: True, False, Both True and False, Neither True nor False. I had heard that the Russia government had subsidized Stcherbatsky's work because of possible revalency to the development of last generation computers, which intrigued me at the time.
Another thread was the Jaina philosophy of Syad vada (the doctrine of "maybe") where the categories are Maybe it is, Maybe it is not, Maybe it both is and is not, Maybe it is unknowable, Maybe it is and is unknowable, Maybe it is not and is unknowable, Maybe it is and is not and is unknowable.
Both Buddhist logic and Jaina logic are well developed (and ancient) formal logic systems and I am thinking that they might be worth following up on again in the context of quantum computing. I asked Gemini about this and it said there was interest and growing research in exploring how non-Western logic systems could influence the development of quantum computing. Amazing!
Just want to say that I've been following your channel for a while now and enjoy it very much! I appreciate your thorough research and how you present the information with integrity and levelheadedness. Keep up the wonderful work :)
Thank you for your kind words and support!
You have to be on airplane to get through interstellar 😂
One might even say you need to be on an INTERSTELLAR flight!!! 😂
Some new books to look into and some stocks to look into. Much thanks.
Thank you Ray!
Excelent performance ,thank you for updating .
You're welcome!
Thanks you!💯❣
You guys are really cool. the XLK sector has a lots of companies outside of MSFT, APPL, NVDA, AVGO. Not really beneficial buying the sector ETF to profit from these companies, and the flowcharts to Cybersecurity and others are really helpful to the non-tech minded.
not crazy about his hiphop stuff, but love the johnny cash video ..assume you saw his friedman interview..cheers
Absolutely! The man knows how to get the best out of artists of all types.
I really like IBIT ETF, low cost no hassle investing in bitcoin. Plan to dca for the next five years then sell to hopefully pay off my mortgage.
All the best on getting that mortgage paid off!
Love the episode so far (at 50%), thank you for the list of books. Just bought the creative act book, was on my list for a while.
It was a really engaging read! And thank you for tuning in to us as well!
I'm reading both ED Young book too they are great
This episode makes me love both of you more, Nick and Kasey. Now I know why your shows were so appealing to me when I first found you guys here 2 months ago, it’s the mindset. I can’t wait to join your club after finishing my master’s program. I’m stretching myself too thin while working full-time and doing my master’s program simultaneously, but I still can’t get my mind off investing :p
Thank you Bonnie! Finish up that Masters program, we'll keep a seat warm for you!
I look forward to hearing more about your promotion for reading and self-improvement. @@chipstockinvestor
It would be interesting to see what your thoughts on Warren Buffett's portfolio is currently.
You are doing really well structuring your investing process in Semiconductor and Cyber security industries. Are you thinking about doing the same in the AI/Blockchain intersection?
What a fantastic video. Thank you both
Thanks John!
Brilliant episode!
Yes, turnaround strategies are often heralded as value plays by some without looking enough at whether the fundamentals have changed. Re: Paypal, I don’t see what the short and medium term growth drivers are. The fierce competition within the industry combined with the macro headwinds and the not-so-strong moat of the company make it difficult for any CEO conducting a business like PayPal. Not to mention the loss in active users. Wise to sell!
Keep up the great work. I’m a big fan. Hope you’re both well.
Thanks @Stockaholic_11 for the comments! Turnaround stories are really really hard (understatement). Appreciate your support!
Great channel. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for watching!
Great job fellow investors :)!. I guess it's hard to do an investment channel (as in talk about companies and stocks) and not become a stock picking venue, at least from the perspective of the viewer.
It's ok, it's kind of stock picking too, but hope we contribute to an educational experience even more!
Hi
Any chance you cover an analysis on Symbotic as part of the new AI infrastructure
We already did a couple write ups on it. Here was the last one in December: www.fool.com/investing/2023/12/18/can-symbotic-stock-double-in-2024/
I greatly enjoy your channel. Last evening I finished "Giants In The Earth", by O.E.Rolvaag, published in 1927. One of the best books I've ever read. I'm currently reading, "The Discoverers", by Daniel J. Boorstin. I think you would both enjoy these two works.
Nice, thank you for the book recs!
I really like the way you guys think. i agree that it's true the best ideas come from several facets of life and nobody is ever going to be a great investor by just reading about investing. I'm excited to check out "I Contain Multitudes" and that Rick Rubin book. I have some recommendations you guys might like:
1. Chip Wars by Chris Miller
2. The Singularity is Near by Ray kurzeweil
3. The intelligent investor by Benjamin Graham (only really two or three chapters in there about stocks, so a short read)
4. Super Intelligence by Nick Bolstrom
5. Code Breaker by Walter Isaacson
Thanks Luke, good recs! Chip War was a great read. Someone told us to pick it up after we started the channel in 2022. Good stuff!
Loved the content and the thought process after selecting any company. Thanks for sharing the book names 😇
Thank you for the video .
One book I recommend that has helped me all these years is ..
How to think like Leonardo da Vinci
by Michael Gelb.
Great book!!
Thank you for the rec!
downloading some of these books. I guess I won't read them, I will "audio" them. Thank you 🙂
Audio books are great!
Thanks for the book ideas! I'm going to take you up on the Rick Ruben. You should add a link to them in your details section, make a couple of bucks off the refererral.
Not a bad idea! Hope you enjoy them
1:40 - 2:42 y'all made me shout THANK YOU while driving. 🗣️
I always get annoyed at videos on "what superinvestors are buying" or "stocks they own."
1) Buffett bought Coca Cola more than 30 years ago
2) He bought Apple in the $25 range
3) These billion-dollar firms have so much F-You money they can toss a few million into a spec stock, but it's just chump change play money
Yall are the best lol
So cool to peak into your reading lists! For insights into real creatives, I'd totally recommend Vasari's "Lives" (written in 1550 covering the lives of the renaissance artists, Da Vinci's part is exquisite).
Awesome! Thank you for the recommendation, I would say I know very little about this time period, other than what I learned in Art 101 a million years ago. This will be interesting!😅
My favourite channel at the moment, it's bringing lots of value in my investment journey, long may it continue. Books, a recent short one is: Wish We Knew What to Say by Pragya Agarwal.
Thanks for the rec! We will add it to our list!
Many of those "How to get rich?" type of books recommend you to write a book, which is kind of silly and ironic in the same time.
I'm glad that you guys are different.
Thank you! We appreciate it. Many of those books are silly...
Wasn't rambling to me Kasey and Nick. Sound and authentic content as usual. Couldn't agree with your life advice more ... and as you would have it, follow my own advice about stock picks given my personalized investment goals and the horizon for my total portfolio. Appreciate your work. Be Well.
Thank you Elroy for the kind words! We appreciate you!
Hi, I am curious why you're placing beta on ACLS and AEHR.
We have some recent videos explaining both picks, see the video timeline
i thinking of buying one of those books
Good stuff, hope you like them!
I'd love to hear your view on $SNOW. I invested in this stock last month and just got crushed.
We will try to do an update!
Hi guys great work! Thank you very much for your videos
What do you think about the idea of creating a collaborative google sheets document of collective intelligence? The idea would be that all users, anonymously, could contribute to a virtual long term of semi portfolio In this way, we could share information:
Which are the most semi loved are part of the portfolio.
Quantity allocation, entry and exit points.
I believe that this initiative could be very beneficial for all participants and for you to have a structured feedback for future videos
What do you think?
My portfolio
Nvidia
AMD
Soundhound
Celsius
On Holding
Super Micro Computer
I have the following us holdings:
Microsoft
Mvidia
Amsl
Tiawan semi conductors
Johnson & Johnson
Schwab US high dividend fund
Chemist stock forget its name
Bit scared as many of these shares are booming.
Might come crashing down
Reading makes my head hurt.
That's ok, there are audio books too!
Bottom for Paypal getting near 🚀
Certainly could be!
Good video as always. Regarding your sells: DIS is a stock I won't touch because it's way too politically controversial, it isn't good for business. While many other stocks can be claimed to be sided politically, DIS seemed to be in a crusade. Re: PYPL: I have trimmed my position, still holding some, but not nearly as much as before. I believe this stock will at some point go higher, perhaps even later this year, but it felt I pay an opportunity cost being too heavy on this stock, I reduced that position to a minor-to-average size.
Good points Sagig. On PYPL in particular, there seems to be ample value, but the market really hates the stock.
@@chipstockinvestorYea. I have nothing against PYPL, I was just oversized cause I thought there was going to be a faster correction up. I probably will get back in on the way up, I just don't want to wait for the bottom to end and willing to pay a bit more once it moves.
PayPal is an awful business to deal with as a merchant and a customer. It's become the last resort for everyone I know. Their dominant market position will continue to erode without wholesale change
No doubt , after seen transformer or luci🤣 till 2016
Disney has been so incredibly mismanaged that it is sad to see their current state. Bob Iger needs to go. How you can have that much great IP and mismanage it so badly should cause the owners of Disney to get rid of Bob Iger as fast as possible. You need someone that can better utilize that IP and get that company out of politics and back on the right track for using their IP. It is a damn shame that Disney controls the quality IP they have with a curmudgeon making bad decisions running the company. Not a huge fan of PAYP either. They have a big market share, but they also have a lot of dead businesses and haven't managed their business well. They have a chance to recover, but the payment space is so competitive now with even the big banks moving into the space that I don't see what they can do to outcompete in an increasingly commoditized sector.
DIS is quite the conundrum! Such a disappointing story!
thank to Cathie wood ,all the chip are falling
so nick corrupted kasey!
Kasey has a strong "sus sense!"
