Kind of obvious if it did not occur to you. We own 2 Tesla evs. over 140k miles. No gas for 5 years and no maintenance. You still have a gas car, plus an ev crammed in to the same body. Less space as a result. More problems, more complicated. You have 2 cars worth of parts and complication. Is that better? I think a 5 year old would understand why that is not a good thing. BTW, we can drive all over the country, in winter, in summer, does not matter. 2. NJ residents do not have to pay sales tax on full BEVs. That state assesses the standard 6.625% sales tax on vehicle purchases. On an average-priced new vehicle ($48000) that's a tax savings of $3180. If you use the $290 figure, that's 11 years of registration fees.

On top of the reasons you gave for leasing, what will happen to the value of current EV models in a few years if Toyota releases an EV with a solid state battery that can fully charge in a few minutes instead or hours? I wouldn't want to own an EV with current battery tech if that happens. Leasing protects you from getting stuck with an EV with outdated battery/charging technology.

    • @SamKhoury

@@rp9674That was an amazingly detailed response. Yes, generally leasing is a waste of money but for EVs every lease gets the $7500 federal tax credit assuming the leasing company passes it onto the leasee and the depreciation on EVs has been much faster than ICE/hybrid cars so I wouldn't want to risk losing a lot of money on buying a new EV unless I was sure I'd be keeping it for 6+ years. Unfortunately many people who bought new EVs the past few years have watched their resale value get killed so many people who took out loans to buy one now have loans that are now under water so they'd lose a lot of money if they sell them. For example, the people who bought the Tesla Model Y long range in Dec 2022 lost over $18k in price cuts in less than a year ($66k in Dec 2022 vs $49k in Oct 2023) and that doesn't include regular depreciation. If they had leased instead then they wouldn't have been stuck with an EV worth much less than they paid for it. People who bought 2022 Kia EV6 between $50k and $60k have seen there value drop by more than half in 2 years. I could give plenty of other examples of EVs which lost a lot of money.

In San Diego, it’s about $0.64/Kwh if you include the transmission fee from home. Yes, it’s the most expensive electricity in the country. I haven’t seen the supercharger rates here, but it’s more for sure. So Model 3 is about $48 to fill from empty at your house and SDG&E is raising the rates even more this year. About $15.36 per 100 miles on flat ground. My mom’s old 2006 CRV gets about 20mpg combined so that’s about $24.95 per 100 miles on $4.95/gal gas. So you pay slightly higher energy fees with no range anxiety if you stick with ICE. Maintenance is the one key advantage until you figure out that you are going through tires like crazy in an EV. They also want to institute a per-mile charge here to make up for the loss in gas tax revenue and already charge you a higher annual registration fee for an EV over ICE to recoup lost gas tax revenue. EV is a scam inside California to control how and when you can drive. The rich early adopters got cheap mileage and government kickbacks while the poor are going to struggle trying to find a way to charge these things and deal with the government finding a way into you car’s driving data. It’s getting crazy in CA so I’m not sticking around for this and many other reasons. EVs are not ready for mass consumption or mandates. They are a great second car for the upper middle class, so let’s just give up on the mandates already and let the market decide.

I have solar at home, but it’s not paid off yet. Without some major battery backup like a couple Tesla Walls for an exorbitant price, you would still have to charge your car in off-peak solar hours and still have to pay the cost of the Kwh and transmission fee per kWh. If you are grandfathered into getting paid for what you sell back to the power company, you still have to pay the transmission fees. Solar is only the answer if you can afford the entire self-contained system for around $75-$100k. It’s a rich person’s playground. Can you do it cheaper than a Power Wall, yes, but it’s a large task for the common homeowner and batteries are not the easiest thing to maintain if they see daily use and how the weather is affecting ambient temperature. It’s more than a common man can do without help these days from a professional that knows how to manage power banks.

It's cheap for a reason, because the battery is almost dead and you'll be paying $25k or more to replace it. There are ICE vehicles with engines built in the 80s that are still on the road today..

Bought my 1st EV. It is not a short-term purchase and I plan to get as much out of it as possible. My commute fits. I am reading all the right things to do to preserve the longevity of the vehicle, just like my 2013 Toyota Avalon with 105K miles. I would say my automobile arsenal is diverse and I may even buy a hybrid next. Also the tech is nice.

I just upgraded from a Bolt EUV to an Equinox EV RS AWD. Fantastic new ev that is smooth and fast but not a rocket. It has all the tech and more than Tesla and feels like a normal car with normal buttons and controls. Screens are amazing and the drivers information screen keeps my eyes on the road. Google Maps is excellent and I can put it on the drivers information screen and use the entertainment screen for music and other apps as can the passanger. Got great discounts and I can thank Tesla for causing a price war. I can understand why people want to keep what they know and Ice cars are so nice but just look at the environment and we are all paying for the climate change ICE cars created. Just my opinion on the environment but just watch the Weather Channel and all the tornado and flooding we are now dealing with. We all want to dismiss climate change as no one likes change. But I remember being in LA in the 70s and seeing the air pollution covering the sky and we made a lot of progress to clean up that air but more needs to be done and I don't want my grandkids suffering for our lack of progress cleaning the air.

All cars are bad for the environment. Ice through air/exhaust pollution, EV through soil pollution due to inadequate recycling technology and CO2 generated during the making of the battery.

5:54 One factor that most analyses of EV depreciation fails to account for the fact that the prices for EVs in 2022 was absurdly high. However since then prices have declined to a more reasonable level which for those who purchased at the peak have experienced the dramatic decline. I would argue that EV depreciation will decrease to more moderate levels going forward. A factor that could inhibit this could be the continued innovation with new battery technologies that could make older EVs less desirable or even obsolete.

I have both cars, but for sure never going back to internal combustion, with EV I save a ton of money, it's a matter of facts.

Id be curious what EVs they are dumping. The Kias and Ioniq are nice. The charging concerns are real. Home charging is the convenience. Supercharging is overrated. If you don't have either local you shouldn't have tried an EV anyway. I'm also tired of hearing about the federal program. They awarded money to the wrong horses. For me supercharging cost is double home charging but still over a dollar cheaper when compared to gas prices. The fuel savings in the first year paid for the home charger. I 100% agree on the way to EV is to lease. Especially if it is it is not a Tesla. I own an EV and have no desire to go back to an ICE Car, as slow as they are. I'll take my no transmission, no oil, no waiting in line for gas 30 minutes sucking in fumes, driving with one pedal and instant torque. Everything else is is just flavor.

I'm an EV owner, I wonder what people's charging habits are I think some people buy EVs with no home charging and only charge at fast charging, seems a little weird to me, whatever works.

You made a good point about charging at home; if we didn't have a house with a charger, we'd just get a Lexus or something.
Depreciation. That's pretty much across the board right now. But, the EV market is volatile.
Our experience with Tesla... we're about to hit 100k mi., and no issues except changing the tires, wipers, greasing some ball-joints, and adding washer-fluid, all of which you can do yourself... and not one trip to a busted-ass dealership... can't beat it.

EV owners show that they don't have critical thinking skills IMO. A little foresight would go a long ways, like more than 300 miles :)

My EV has 350 miles of range (390 "stated" but we all know that's crap)
I wake up. Every day, to a full charge. Don't need to do anything. I essentially have a gas pump on my driveway. Nothing beats that.

I remember when the US and EU placed high tariffs and import limitations to Japanese cars in the 70s and 80s and still have some of those limitations today. They did that to a completely militarily neutral country who just made a better car than they did. In that perspective I think China, who is a literary military threat, should get more limitations with their EVs in US and EU. It only makes sense.
