  • Pernell "Sweet Pea" Whitaker the best defensive fighter ever in my opinion he was a four-weight world champion,lightweight, light welterweight, welterweight, and light middleweight, as well as the undisputed lightweight title, and the lineal lightweight and welterweight titles one of all time greats and a tad underrated he was willing to fight anyone never ducked any fighter...got robbed like 3 times and still ended up with a 40-4-1 record my favorite fighter ever

    People don't realize Whitaker was past his prime, near the end of his career, in the DeLahoya fight and he still barley lost a controversial decision. He only fought 3 more times after that.......If there was a greater lightweight than prime Whitaker, we'll never know because nobody ever beat prime Sweet Pea.......RIP to a 757 legend.

    • @havrisen6620
      @havrisen6620 5 лет назад +6

      Nobody beat a prime Chavez either, including Whitaker. That fight should’ve taken place in 1987 when they were both Lightweight Champion and prime. Not in 1993 when Whitaker was at his peak (he even said he was at his peak in ‘93) and Chavez had to move up to Welterweight to make the fight (he only weighed 142lbs for the fight) because Whitaker wouldn’t fight him at 140 just like he wouldn’t at 135. This isn’t a knock on Whitaker it’s just the truth. Whitaker may have won regardless but we’ll never know because Chavez in his prime was something special too. Chavez in ‘93 was about the equivalent of Whitaker when he fought DeLahoya-still dangerous but past it.

      Facts

    • @havrisen6620
      @havrisen6620 5 лет назад +1

      Pep was better defensively. So was George Benton. Locche was flashier and more entertaining. Also, guys like Harry Greb who rarely weighed over 160lbs and fought Light Heavyweights and Heavyweights and fought 300+ bouts and was only stopped twice (once early in his career against a heavyweight and once after the ref stopped it due to Greb’s broken forearm) and was reported to be almost impossible to hit clean by his opponents seem to be forgotten. Maxie Rosenbloom was another. There were many. Also, there’s something to be said about men who came right at you like Duran and Chavez that had exemplary defensive and is more difficult to pull off. Modern fighters, especially those with Whitaker’s style get overrated. He was a master for sure, but the greatest? Hardly.

    I was very stunned when i heard about what happened to this man (R.I.P.), to
    be taken out by a
    traffic accident is something that could end the lives of any one of us at any given time and my heart goes out to all of this great and one of the best ever "pound-for-pound" prize fighters in boxing history, Pernell could hit and not be hit like magic
    and for my baby boomer tastes was the "Floyd Mayweather" before that guy came along to eclipse the record and rapier-like precision of Whitaker's skill set...
    What else can one say but wish this man's family and close friends well in coping with his untimely and shocking death?!
    It's all very sad for those of us who revered him as a boxer, even if some
    didn't enjoy his personality outside of the ring...🌟

    My favorite boxer ever. I feel so bad that after he got his life together, it was cut short this way. RIP one of the all-time greats

    I watched his career as it happened, he was one of he best boxers of the last 75 years, he beat PRIME Chavez AND Prime De la Hoya, he got robbed in both fights but we all know the Sweet Pea won those fights, he was a consummate boxer, he fought everyone and was a very respectable person. He was a mini Sugar ray leonard, they were cut from the same cloth, they both could box and fight, Sugar Ray was a better finisher thats all.
