Honestly Will, I get this entirely. I am no where near the audience you have, but as a maker and been prototyping and trying to make a design the past two years. I get a lot of messages and comments. I can still respond to all of these messages, as I mentioned no where near the same size audience as you but, for me I enjoy interacting with people in this community. As a designer and very soon will be selling drops of my design, I feel a distance as I feel I need to hold a level of professionalism that forces me to keep a distance from the community.
Also, you mentioned Blade Show, I will be going to my first Blade Show (Atlanta) next year not as a vendor but, just as a participant with designs of my own for anyone to try.

On a more real note, I totally get the distance you're talking about, and I've found that having a little bit of manufactured distance allows me to interact in a far more natural way with people and helps ease some of that "forced youtuber distance". For example my recommendation document filters out a lot of the random "what would you suggest I have this much to spend" questions and makes room for more real conversation with people who reach out to me about... not that, and my hundreds of videos on various balisongs filter out very surface level "what are your thoughts on x". I totally get that second one is very difficult to do, but my point is that I think about almost automating the questions that I get most frequently, manufacturing a little distance in that regard, so I can make room for more genuine interactions.
I also have a specific way of contacting me for a more serious inquiry where I will just delete anything that isn't that, and not even give it a response. While it hasn't been entirely useful for someone like me who usually just sees all of my messages on something like Instagram, it might help you a lot more.

I don't think anyone has to be in the know or run in the circle to enjoy flipping. I've flipped (poorly) for a good number of years now, but the balisong community never quite clicked for me. I've always had poor experiences with it, so it's not where I go for social interaction. I still buy a lot of bali's and carry one most days, but I've accepted just being an outsider otherwise, and I'm fine with that.
This. I’m not really missing out on much from not interacting with the community, my local scene in NC is a bunch of emotionally immature kids. I just flip for myself and discover new tricks myself, which honestly makes it much more fun than copying someone else’s videos or tricks.
