- I took my friend on her first backpacking trip! My college roommate and best friend, Pam, recently decided to try backpacking for the first time! I took her to REI to get fitted for a pack, and then we hiked the 9-mile Wallace Lake Loop Trail here in Washington State. Watch the video to see how Pam did on her first backpacking trip!

I had such a great time!!! And I can’t wait to go backpacking again ☺️☺️☺️
You did so well, Pam! It was great to see your pure joy on the trail 😊
Best episode yet!!! Loved it!! Very entertaining!! Pam should be a regular 😀!!
Nice 👍🏼!
Great video. I'm not a pro but a bigger hiker and I use hiking poles they seem to help me on inclines. Hope this helps.
@@bighappydecalifas me too!! They help with stability especially when my body starts to feel fatigued!!
REI please take the popularity of this video as a sign that we want more plus size options! It's nearly impossible to find plus size hiking clothes that are ACTUALLY plus size, and when we do find them, they're marked up 200% from what standard sizes have to pay ($90 for a pair of shorts). There's a HUGE market for reasonably priced plus size hiking clothes!
I'm really happy that Miranda reminded Pam that it's her first time backpacking when she was mentioning her weight. 🥰 People that are plus-sized are always thinking about how our weight limit us, forgetting that a thinner person could also find a similar situation challenging! A very wholesome moment. And also Pam, thank you for being brave enough to share your vulnerability ❤
Late to the party, but I have noticed that plus sized people are often in way better shape than skinny people. A new backpacker is going to struggle and it isn’t necessarily about the weight.
@@thisbeem2714 Welcome to the party lol! Thank you for sharing your thoughts :). I have a friend that is probably 100 lbs lighter than me and I can easily outrun her. While I don't glorify being overweight (I myself wish I could lose some weight), but people regularly underestimate and vilify overweight people as if we are incapable of doing anything beyond walking to the fridge from the couch.
@@eloisag4959 This is so true.
And let's add a warm thought for the camera crew, who hoofed it to the top probably carrying the same camping gear, _plus_ all the camera equipment, running ahead, lagging behind and catching up, to get the perfect shots we're enjoying here. :-)
As someone who is both plus sized and outdoorsy (although I'm more into canoeing/kayaking) it is nice to see some diversity from an outdoor company. Also, an encouraging and understanding companion makes all the difference in the tough moments!
I agree and with you. I love being outdoors and I love that she included her friend. It encouraging and inspiring. Having someone on your side make a world of difference, especially when it’s your bestie
What a great video and definitely wonderful to see good friends having fun and you ladies rock. Well done.
It's really heart-warming and validating to see other plus sized women doing outdoorsy stuff :)
@@emilyholewka8784 what does “plus sized” mean?
@@Steve8624 if you watch the video, we can let Pam explain this quite common expression at 13:36.
As a plus size female, I totally appreciate this video and Pam’s enthusiasm to try something new. Having a friend who is experienced and the right gear helps so much. Pam, I hope this is the start of many adventures for you.
I was just thinking the same thing. I started backpacking about 4 years ago, and finding clothes and equipment that fit me was difficult. But I also had an experienced friend who helped me get my trail legs, and now I'm hooked. I just wish places like REI and other sporting goods/sportswear companies would broaden their plus size options so that more of us can get on the trails with the proper gear.
And a friend who enjoys it and doesn't make you feel inadequate helps too.
@@JulieNapp Yes! I'm wondering if I should drive up to the Seattle store to see if they carry more options. The Portland store almost never has anything that would fit me, but to be fair, I've mostly been trying to find biking gear up to this point (ended up buying a men's rain jacket and rolling the sleeves up.)
@@JulieNapp yes! I’m planning my first backpacking trip and it’s so frustrating that these brands don’t carry my size! 😢
Poles help a lot too
Pam needs her own segment! I so appreciate seeing another plus sized woman backpacking.
Miranda: “do NOT keep that in!”
Production: putting that in twice
😅😂🤣 They really have us in mind.
We've all said something we regret when we're feeling wankered.
_whispers behind hand_ This is production's show, gosh darn.
As a plus sized hiker it was so great to see another curvy girl doing all the outdoorsy things! Keep doing great things Pam 💃🏻

What do you mean take other people? We want more Pam, take her everywhere 😄
I agree, take me everywhere 😂
PAM! PAM! PAM!

Take Pam all of the places!!!
Love you & Pam
Watching Miranda and Pam push through the emotional challenges of shame and pain that often come with being a large-sized outdoors person was incredibly encouraging and beautiful.
Now, maybe REI can push their suppliers to produce gear for us!
Thank you so much!!
So true! When I was XL (now L) I had a VERY hard time finding pants for hiking. Then I found the exact ones Pam is wearing at REI 😍

As a plus size hiker, I don’t usually see people who look like me on the trail who look like me. It’s great seeing a plus size curvy gal backpack!! ☀️ Go Pam! Thank you Miranda for being a great teacher! I wish I had a friend to teach me how to backpack.
“Physically exhausted which is making me not have control over my emotions”... COMPLETELY relatable 💕 Very inspiring video for those of us who haven’t done their first backpacking trip yet! 🤗
Hiked the Grand Canyon, and at one point hiking back up I did start crying from exhaustion.
My favorite parts were seeing the specialness of your friendship. The joking, the nicknames, and your compassion for her when she became emotional. You can tell that your friendship is extremely special! I hope this is a new thing you two can share.
Ditto! They have a special connection and it does come off very well in the video. ❤️👍🏼
As a fellow plus sized chick, I've been wary about camping/backpacking but Pam totally inspired me! Just signed up for an REI camping skills class and am planning my own trip with friends
My pleasure!!! Have so much fun!!
Can Pam be a recurring character?
I agree, Pam seems really cool!
Yes please!
Yes!! We need more Pam in our lives, she’s great!
Love this video!! Love your friendship, and Pam is so great!!
Agree! Can this be a series please!?? 🥺
😭 I love this friendship so much. I teared-up when Pam said she had difficulty controlling her emotions when her body was exhausted, and Miranda acknowledged it and agreed. Adore you two very much.
Everybody loves Pam. We want more of Pam.
Thank you for highlighting this park, and inspiring others to try backpacking. My Boy Scout Troop did many Eagle projects at this park. The Troop no longer exists, which makes me sad, but I'm glad to see so many people enjoying our hard work. RIP Troop 53.
Right on, Daniel! Your Troops legacy lives on. 🌲
I noticed a lot of Eagle Scout projects on our journey!!
💜💜💜💜💜 Pam, thank you for putting yourself out there and sharing your experience with us. You are a brave and powerful woman who will inspire many to get out there and enjoy nature! Thank you Miranda and REI for amazing content like this. As a plus size hiker when I started it was depressing to go into a store and not find clothes in my size, look for videos and not see anyone like me. You have no idea how happy this video made me.
More Pam! She did so wonderful and is so charming! I completely understand getting emotional when you're exhausted and pushing yourself out of your comfort zone. Also, shouting "bridge!" is exactly my reaction to a wooden bridge every time I see one - never gets old.
Hello 👋
“I can’t wait to pee on this!” 🤣🤣 that sent me!!
When Miranda said “I didn’t sign up to be a sidekick”, it would have been the perfect opportunity to follow up with a “THIS IS MY SHOW GOSH DARN!”

Thanks for sharing a size inclusive backpacking video. It gives me the confidence that one day I can achieve backpacking too😊
They don’t actually have plus sizes in stores. I needed gear for an upcoming trip and after seeing this video was so excited to shop in store. I waited to long and didn’t have what I needed. This video is misleading. Do better REI
Miranda is such a good friend 🥺 it’s not often you come across people like that in the world anymore.
I am also a large female, and grey haired too, so hiking with a heavy pack is especially challenging and I have to take it very slow. It is so awesome to see you introducing your friend to this amazing experience
Thanks for watching and for sharing your experiences, Jill. Whatever pace works for you, is what works. Keep on enjoying the trail!
Walking poles are a great help, especially for up hill slogs, if you can find yourself a light, adjustable pair with neoprene handles, they'll help, and give you confidence :) Happy trails :)
@@angeladawn805 they’ve also saved me from quite a few falls.
@@angeladawn805 Thank you for sharing this advice. I used to be quite fit and grew up in the forest, but I was struck by a chronic illness over a decade ago. It's more under control now, but I'm in terrible shape in addition to being older and creakier, and without anyone to take me, I've been afraid to give it a go. Do you have any brand suggestions?
@@Tser as long as they have a rubber tip (so not to damage the track) and neoprene or Cork handles, and wrist loops, you can't go wrong (even a cheap KMart pair is better than nothing). I'm sure your REI store will be able to help (I'm in New Zealand, so we're not lucky to have all the choices big countries get!!). Personally, I wouldn't bother with anti-shock, as it makes it heavier. And be sure to use the wrist straps, as they kinda act as a Sling, so you don't grip so tightly, and the whole forearm does the work. Best of luck to you :)
I love that there is a plus size woman in a backpacking video. I am a big girl too and am working up to backpacking level from day hiking. I loved watching her enjoy the woods and having a great time. She had more luck getting plus size clothes at REI than I’ve had. That view was gorgeous! Surprised she didn’t use poles for the steep parts but good for her. Hope she goes again!
I'm a plus size backpacker. Pam, you might consider hiking with trekking poles. The make a HUGE difference in conquering those hills, both on the uphill and the downhill. You go, girl! I am so proud of you!
Miranda had some poles available for me to try, but I made the choice not to. They didn’t feel super comfortable in my hands, and I was worried I’d feel more unsteady, because I’m pretty clumsy naturally and I like holding onto things. But, so many people have suggested poles so I probably should give them a fair shake!
@@pamlavallee9051 I felt the same way the first time I took poles, but I got used to them quickly and they really helped me. My kids enjoy them too, even though they are like mountain goats - it helps them be even faster. Smart, though, to not throw too many complications into the first trip!
Pam! You crushed this trip! As a plus sized woman who loves adventuring outside I am inspired by you to stop thinking about it and actually do an overnight backpacking trip! Miranda you were such a wonderful companion for her first trip!
They don’t actually have plus sizes in stores. I needed gear for an upcoming trip and after seeing this video was so excited to shop in store. I waited to long and didn’t have what I needed. This video is misleading. Do better REI
THANK YOU for taking a fellow big girl hiking! I'm big and I've had so many people look at me like I'm insane when I tell them I backpack, because they assume nobody of my size could possibly do it. It's so refreshing to see someone else backpacking who looks like me! 💕
I'm a plussized hiker too and struggled a lot with a trail a few days ago so totally relate to the emotion that just escape you. I loved this video though, it is so nice seeing other people my size accomplishing these kickass things!

Me, my siblings, and brother in law climbed Wallace Falls and I was huffing and puffing on those switchbacks without a fully loaded backpack on. You gals killed it!
Hi Nicole
I cannot love this video enough!! Thank you Pam for your vulnerability in this episode. The outdoors are for everyone, including us bigger girls. Thank you REI for this content and for clothes/gear that fit!
Hello 👋
“That bunny just did a 180 into eating a LEAF” had me dying laughing haha
Such a Mood right?
Miranda and Pam are the best duo since batman and peanut butter I love this video so much more more more more!!!
Omg Miranda, your face when Pam says "I wish I don't die"!! That was priceless. 🤣🤣
Hello Donna
trekking/hiking poles would be a perfect accompaniment to those of us with a couple extra lbs on us. Saves on the knees and lower back. Great video on getting the first time hikers on the trail though. Appreciate your very approachable way of introducing people to being outdoors. Kudos to you and your team.
It was definitely a personal choice for me. Miranda did have some available for me to use, but I didn’t feel like I’d enjoy it or be able to keep my balance as well. I’m naturally pretty clumsy and I was worried I wouldn’t feel as steady with the poles. But maybe I’m wrong, and I should try it anyway on my next adventure!
@@pamlavallee9051 They definitely add stability. That's the reason I use them for winter hiking.
@@pamlavallee9051 Before I got mine I tripped a... not insignificant amount, but having the poles actually helped me be more diligent because I was keeping an eye out for the best places to hit with them. I was descending a moderate hill with just the wildest amount of huge knotty roots and where normally I'd struggle, it was a breeze.
Poles really do help your stability. When you feel like you want something to hold onto to pull yourself up the hill poles help with that. You push up using your arms and legs. Need something to lean on mid stride, poles. Going down hill helps brace your downward momentum. A difficult rock or tree branch to straddle, poles. Crossing a creek, you can test the path ahead with the poles before you use your feet. At first it was a bit awkward (I broke a bone in my foot as a kid and had to use crutches, crossed them in front of me and fell flat on my face, sooo) knowing my clutzyness I practiced walking on sidewalk to get my rhythm, (with backpack on) then grass, then on hills, then on a sandy lake beach which included rocks and branches to go over. There are great videos on utube that can guide you. Finally they do help my knees.
You feel exhausted and wobbly during and after, but.....so proud of yourself because you did it. Your lungs are clear your mind is open to the beauty and the possibilities. The stresses of the trail are Not the ones at home. These are ones you conquer one foot in front of the other. What a great friend you have. There is scientific evidence," out in nature" helps our brains and our physical well-being. Good for you. Enjoy your new found life style.
PS I loved the tent shake 🕺dance. 😀 great way to get the dirt out.
Hi, please let Pam know, that as a fellow fluffy woman, I am so proud of her. She was magnificent!

@Bill Sbac There were two whole floors they didn't even show. It's like being in a Costco. (Which also started in Seattle. Maybe there's a connection, like all the rain makes our stores grow bigger...)

I love how the video is honest about the challenges heavier ppl face, hiking; it isn't afraid to show Pam getting out of breath & struggling. But it also shows how, with a break, a little patience + support from her companion, & her own fantastic attitude, she is able to recover & strike boldly out again.
This is the representation we need. I hope Pam becomes a regular.

I was incredibly nervous, but honestly this entire experience was so transformative for me as a plus size person. It was amazing to see what my larger body is capable of achieving!
Wow, this Video made me cry and laugh. Thank you for showing the emotional side of backpacking too, the worries, the exhaustion and the joys. I had a very emotional experience hiking uphill a few days ago and this makes me realize, that it's normal and fine.
Also, Pam is so likeable! Maybe we can see her in other videos, too :))

Hi Lori
Bring pam again it was so heart melting to see real good hearted friends get together.i was in tears .
I think it's wonderful how many more city people have started to appreciate and enjoy the nature. These last years have been horrible for mental health but going to nature offers a great help for depression and being stuck indoors. It really doesn't require as much gear as it may seem at first if you live in a place where the weather doesn't go below freezing. Sturdy boots, a decent backpack, a good sleeping bag with a thick pad under it, some cheap festival tent, a headlamp, a knife and a cooking set. Maybe some water purification tablets for cooking/drinking if you're not willing to carry them and you're pretty much good to go.
True story, I went to REI the day after watching this video and FINALLY bought a Kula cloth!!!!
Hello Liz
It's always stressful brining a new backpacker into the woods for the first time but this was great to watch. Pam's enthusiasm is infectious and makes me want to hit a trail. Also, I know you two were college roommates because in spite of her clear fear of pooping in the woods, you bought chili mac. Exactly what I would have done to my college roommates! Lol

Wankered is a good Irish phrase…. Pretty much exactly as it was used! Perfect, Solid uses of good Irish phrases
More Pam please! Love to see someone my size hiking. I get really intimidated by shopping and anxious about asking for breaks throughout the hike.
Always take breaks!! As Miranda has told me, the activity IS backpacking. There’s no rush to get to camp, except to get camp set up before dark. Backpacking doesn’t have to be painful.
I freaking love that you went on that hike Pam. As an outdoorsy plus sized person, I wish there were more popular plus sized hikers putting content out there. Representation really matters, and those shy folks who are curious but intimidated with hiking might take courage from seeing you. The fact that this was your first overnight trip was also awesome, because it will inspire others to try something new. And I love that Miranda was a very supportive partner, that makes all the difference 💖
