  • In this episode, I sift through a box of old specimens including insects, worms, spiders and other creatures. Was the old dusty box filled with insect treasure or just dilapidated arthropod zombies? Find out by watching and learn about a variety of arthropods from the pacific northwest of the united states. I discuss the proper preservation techniques and what went wrong with some of these specimens.

    5:50 so you're like that one really cool teacher that only comes in once a month to do assemblies and everyone remembers them but can't remember their name. Awesome

    Spiders, like soft bodied insects and larvae, are preserved in alcohol instead of pinned. This is because the exocuticle layer on their abdomens is thin and very soft, which causes the abdomen to shrivel up if it dries out. P.S. I love your channel!

      Awesome thanks! Glad you found it! Thanks for sharing the advice. Yeah the shriveling is... not pleasant.

    9:00 that says "Stinkhorn fungus", that smear is probably the spores of a Phallaceae mushroom. Phallaceae fungus produce a turd imitating goo that attracts flies to spread their spores

      Ha ha I wish I could give you some of my insects, but once I start doing that then I will have to start giving to everyone. Perhaps if we do T-shirts I can sign it for you or something. I will have to see what we can do when that time comes!

    the june beetle thing is because they tend to fly around kind of stupidly and crash into things. aka us humans! if you have long hair they will get stuck in it and their spiky legs only make it worse. in the summer nights here in texas we will get hundreds, if not thousands of them. you couldn’t pay me to stand near or under a lamppost at night!! yuuuuuck 😬

    • @InsectHunter
      @InsectHunter  5 лет назад +1

      Ha ha yeah they aren’t too good at flying so it makes sense. I guess I don’t have enough hair or a big enough head to attract them to me.

    from the little research I did, the longhorn beetles look like they may be cottonwood borers; but I did very little research just googling long horned beetle identification and going off of what I could see.

    Hey guys at 15:26 those bugs I really need to know what they are because I don't think they where catipillers when I saw them but in my back yard like 10 years ago when I was a kid. There was a 5 gallon bucket full of stagnant smelly gross water, but those things where swimming around in there and they where so weird. The way they swam and their body shape didn't make since like the tail thing was what they used to swim

    The longhorn beetles were beautiful specimens. Also, I’m just starting to get into preserving. I want to make some insects into wearable stuff. I have a necklace with a beautiful wolf spider encased in resin. Is this a good route for preserving. Also, one last question, any insects I should keep my eye out for in PA? Like, rarity, cool looking creatures, etc?

    • @InsectHunter
      @InsectHunter  6 лет назад

      NeonMangos I am not super familiar with PA but I would try and find the nearest university to see if they have an entomologist. Pen State has some great ones you could talk to to ask about rare insects of the area. I bet they even have an insect museum and collection! I think using resin is fine, but is definitely an art so could take a lot of practice and some money to buy the right gear and setup. I want to one day make something in resin, but it might be a while.

      Insect Hunter Thank you. Appreciate the response. I probably seem like an annoying newbie, which I am. Haha. I’ve always been interested in preserving, I just never knew how. Now I know where to start. I’ll check into the Penn State thing. Thanks!

    • @InsectHunter
      @InsectHunter  6 лет назад

      Its ok we all have to start somewhere. Don't worry I never belittle people for asking questions. I actually reward them by trying to answer as best as I can because questions mean someone has a desire to learn which is half of the battle. I am actually planning on relaxing those longhorn beetle specimens and will make a video showing how to relax insects most likely. Thanks!

    Correct me if Im wrong: if I would want to preserve any kinda insects, the best way to do it would be in alcohol (like the alcohol used in healthcare; percentage of alcohol)?! Are you still collecting insects of all sorts or only just a specific sort?

    • @InsectHunter
      @InsectHunter  3 года назад

      I collect all sorts on occasion. Alcohol is good, but doesnt always turn out how you want. This video will help. ruclips.net/video/BC-H8wTQjwE/видео.html

    Can alcohol specimens be pinned???

    • @InsectHunter
      @InsectHunter  6 лет назад

      I would say it depends on how long they have been sitting in alcohol. If for a brief amount of time then they can surely be pinned, but if they have been sitting for years in alcohol I don't know. You could always try. After they have been in alcohol a long time they tend to lose some color though so they don't look as nice.
