    Wow! I had no idea you could do this with dead beetles! I'm gonna start collecting all the ones I find.

    NO, actually fairly easy! I kept him in a 10 gallon tank with a screen lid, gave him crickets to eat. One thing you must remember... they are from the rainforest so you must spray them a few times a week so they don't sufficate in their own skin (they need moisture to "molt")

    I'm sorry, I have not got around to it... I made those videos before I got pregnant, well- I had twins! Needless to say, my hands have been full for a while :-/
    Thank you for your interest and someday (hopefully soon) I will work on more videos!

    yes, the time it takes to relax them will depend on size (smaller ones can be ready as early as a day later, bigger arachnids can take a few days- do not leave them in longer then 3-4 days, they may mold)
    have fun!

    This gave me tremendous anxiety, I thought he was going to break so many times.
    I like the idea of ruling a grid on your xps foam, I might use that in future pinnings.

    Hi Alicia,
    I have never worked with resin, but have seen it and have a beetle in a keyring with resin... I would imagine the moisture would not be an issue as long as you let it dry for a lengthy period. And yes, you would need to mount the beetle before hand!
    Good luck- and let me know how it turned out for you!

    Ya know, I live bugs... I used to have a pet tarantula and a emperor scorpion, insects are really neat---- BUT I have to admit, millipedes give me the e-b-jeebies!
    My mother has mounted huge centipedes... and I must say, it would be a long video for a millipede :-)

    Hi Frederick,
    This specimen is about just under 4"
    If you are interested in really cool "eye candy and gory looking" insects, you can go to our website (Butterflies and Things- .com) You can actually buy "service dollars" (kinda like gift cards) and have me select some of my favorites for you!
    I am so glad these videos are helping you :-)

    We will be adding a video for that- I just gave birth to twins recently so I haven't been doing videos lately. Please keep checking in, or better yet- check out website ButterfliesandThings (.com) There will be "how-to" videos on the website shortly.

    I am on facebook, you tube will not allow me to post the actual "link" to my page so keep in mind it is facebook .com
    then /Tracy.Kelley.Ianni
    make sure to put the periods between the names... you will see my profile photo is my twin boys.
    I would love to help if I can!

    Hello; I have a question. I got a beautiful cyclommatus metallifer specimen with black/blue coloration. Normally I put them in boiling water for a couple of minutes. My specimen had a brown tone when pulling it out of the water. The black coloration came back a few hours after, but I'm not sure if the blue will come back :( I'll wait some more but do you think this method is destructive ?

    • @TracysFunnies
      @TracysFunnies  5 лет назад +2

      not at all... I've done it many times myself. It just takes a long time to dry out and the color to become vibrant again instead of saturated. No worries!

  • @Lethalsniperxxx
    @Lethalsniperxxx 3 года назад

    How long do you usually wait for them to fully dry after pinning? I heard that its about 2 weeks

    Hey mam can you still rehydrate a 1 year old dead beetle? Or itll crumble?

    • @TracysFunnies
      @TracysFunnies  Год назад

      You can rehydrate a 50 yr old beetle! Just do them all the same way :-)
      Good luck

    • @neonx6568

      No, spiders will shrivel up, because their exoskeleton is so thin

    I love this video! I have a bunch of beetles I bought to coat in resin. Will I need to rehydrate them to get the right position? I'm scared too much moisture will ruin the resin.

    • @neonx6568
      @neonx6568 3 года назад

      Reydrate them, mount them how you want, let it dry for 2 weeks or so, and then put it in the resin

    how do you preserve their bodies

    • @TracysFunnies
      @TracysFunnies  7 лет назад +2

      they preserve themselves (no taxidermy required) as long as you keep them in a place that is away from the elements (air/wind, water/moisture, direct sunlight) so a framed enclosure is very nice to be able to see your specimen at any given time. I recommend putting a little moth ice (Enoz moth ice) to keep parasites away as well as kill off any internal parasites. We like to use a little screened box called a filament box.

    What material do you pin into?
    I have to make a frame for a customer, and don't know which material to use.

    • @TracysFunnies
      @TracysFunnies  8 лет назад

      +Brian Shea in this video we used a small portion of foam insulation (bought at home depot or lowes) and cut the large sheet into several small boards to use for spreading boards.when you say making a frame, are you talking about a frame to display the insect in after its mounted?because THAT makes a world of difference!

    • @TracysFunnies
      @TracysFunnies  8 лет назад

      +Tracy Kelley By the way... what you are seeing is a typical piece of lined paper covering the foam insulation board so you can see the lines and mount perfectly straight for collections! it's much easier then "wingin it"

    • @brianshea2515
      @brianshea2515 8 лет назад

      +Tracy Kelley I'll be making a frame for display. The customer had mentioned some dissatisfaction with the quality of the backer board used in many mounting boxes/frames. Not sure if 1/2" foamboard (it has a paper finish on both sides) would be appropriate. I have a source for that. Please advise.

    • @TracysFunnies
      @TracysFunnies  8 лет назад

      +Brian Shea is he going to display it in a manner that he will leave the pin in the thorax or will he be wanting to glue the insect onto the back boarding of the mounting box (shadow box)??? if you would be gluing to the back of the box--- it is very appealing to lay a nice off white fabric (I glue it down with spray glue then overlap to the back of the board slightly for a nice tight fit. Then the entire back of the frame I use black felt fabric glued as well. gives it a nice touch. If its for a collection and the frame is like a "cornell case" then you should use a very soft but tight foam. I hope I answered ok--- if not, feel free to ask away!

    • @brianshea2515
      @brianshea2515 8 лет назад

      +Tracy Kelley I believe that he will be pinning the insects in the frame. We are making him a small test frame to see if he likes the idea. It will be 8 x 10 x 3 inches. I'm not sure what type of foam backer should be used. Is there a standard? I'm looking for a source for the backer. Do you have any recommendations? Thanks..
