Pinning a Large Spider

  • In this video I demonstrate and discuss pinning a large spider species in preparation to make a display. This species was captured in the wild and then reared in captivity for a short period before it died. I believe the spider is a Carolina wolf spider. It was a beautiful spider that I didn't want to just throw away. So to remember him I had to pin him. In the future I hope to incorporate it into a display of some sort.

    I know it's far too late for this, and you probably already know, but Male wolf spiders play dead. and pinning an alive wolf spider is surprisingly common!

    This is really good stuff. I’m sorry to hear about his death but this video is really awesome. I have been looking for a really well done pinning video for awhile.

    Jason, The possibility that you can permanently display this impressive creature, after the interactions you had with him, is most helpful. Should I have such an opportunity, I would always remember that I had given him an easy last days, and the chance for others to see how amazing the spider world can be. Your videos in this experience have enhanced my perception of these tiny, though dignified lives. Your procedure of stabilizing the body for drawing the legs out to a normal position is appreciated. The attention to his 'feet' feels like watching an artist working to present his subject to others in a way they can see its 'life'. It was mesmerizing to watch your working of his appendages to recreate his beauty. TRULY, I would be so pleased to have pinned him with such life-likeness.

    One important thing for pinning arachnids is that you have to remove the tissues from the abdomen or it is going to collapse and get rot

    • @InsectHunter
      @InsectHunter  6 лет назад +8

      Yeah I understand. I was willing to take that risk for purposes of this video. If it does rot or collapse I will definitely show it in a follow up video.

    hey this is a really cool video, the first of yours that I've seen, and I'm about to look at more of your channel. I am trying to learn how to pin insects/arachnids, etc., simply because my brother did it at a science camp he went to. He found it to be really cool and he gets really into talking about it and is very keen with it. I am really excited to see where this interest leads him. I don't plan on pinning any bugs myself, (I find bugs to be really cool but you won't be seeing me touch any dead or alive except for a select few), but I want to get an idea of all the tools and techniques he needs so he can do what he wants. I want to get him what he needs for bug pinning for like christmas or his birthday or something. Thank you so much for this video, it really helped out!

    I too have a pet orb weaver (female tho) that I want to save now that she has passed. Unfortunately I let her dry all up before I thought of this...so I am following your advice on rehydrating. If that actually works, I will try the techniques here! Kinda worried cos her butt shriveled up. Wish me luck!

    Give them a few days before doing this in case it's alive. As others said, spiders play dead all the time when disturbed.

    This might be a dumb question but what do you use to wet him? And typically how long does it take to dry? Also another thing, how to you get him stabilized in the centre of a picture frame, is it glue? Thank you, I’m just curious!

      I know this is a late response but what i do personally- to rehydrate mine, i get a Tupperware container, line the bottom with napkins, poor hot water and vinegar into the container (just enough for the napkins to be completely soaked-not swimming), place a small piece of paper plate (just big enough to keep the specimen from touching the napkins) and then finally put the specimen in. I leave it for about two days somewhere where the container will stay relatively warm. The warmth and moisture relaxes the body and the vinegar prevents mold from forming. Once i have it posed the way i want, i let it sit and dry for two more days, though you should always check to make sure its dry enough. I personally use modge podge for attaching because it’s thick and dries clear but i use it with the intention of never moving or redoing the specimen again. Sorry this is so long but i hope it helps :)

    • @InsectHunter
      @InsectHunter  5 лет назад +1

      ha ha show it off to your friends and keep it in a place away from dermestid beetles. You could put it in a case with some moth balls to keep it safe. It should stay preserved for a long time that way.

  • @theinsectgal5276

    Hey I have a question. I've collected some little spiders in my yard with bulbous bottoms and I don't know how to preserve the bottom part. Every time I pin one the bottom just deflates and I lose the best part about the spider... help!!!

    • @InsectHunter
      @InsectHunter  5 лет назад +6

      You would need to cut the bottom down the middle on the underside and then stuff it with cotton even if just a little. It's a painful long process I don't enjoy but that's how you do it.

    Pinning spiders has been kicking my ass. I'll check on it every day and everytime it's curled up. Then I pin again. Same thing the next day. No issue with insects.

    How much time do you have to work with it, before it becomes too stiff?

    • @InsectHunter
      @InsectHunter  4 года назад +2

      I would say generally its best to work with it by 3-4 days after it dies. You can always re-relax the insect or spider. This video shows you how. ruclips.net/video/mKVlkthwq30/видео.html

    Spiders and other insects get brittle after they die, if you put them into a jar with a moist napkin for 24 hours, you will have a better chance of setting them without breaking anything. Sorry to see your spider die. I discovered my jumping spider the same way today. 😕

    • @InsectHunter

      Sad to hear! Yeah it stinks when they die, but its a fact of life and just happens with almost any pet.

    I heard that its important to eviscerate the body of a spider. So why you just pinned it down? Im new to the insect-huntig thing so Im really confused which sort of little creatures i want to collect. There are so many different methods and im kinda confused :D

    • @InsectHunter

      Yes you technically should remove the innards of the abdomen, but I am lazy haha.

  • @vanitymontalvo7584

    Might be a dumb question, but I’m seriously needed an answer lol. I heard you say you were going to let him dry and put him in a frame.
    I’ve seen other videos of people stuffing them first. Would it just depend how big it is?

    • @InsectHunter
      @InsectHunter  4 года назад +2

      It is best to stuff the abdomen, but I didn't want to because it is so hard in my opinion. It is just difficult and requires the hands of a surgeon. The abdomen has deflated a bit, but it doesn't look too bad unless you look up close.

    • @InsectHunter
      @InsectHunter  6 лет назад +19

      As was described in the video I did not intentionally kill the animal. I tried to keep it alive and followed the best protocol I could to keep it alive. If the animal had died in the wild its carcass would have quickly decomposed and been forgotten. Now with the pinning and display case I can take it to show people all the amazing spiders they can find in the region if they go out and look at them. A big push of mine is to get folks to go out into nature to explore and discover new things which is what I use this specimen for. Showing the specimen makes the stories more real because people can physically see it.
