  • Visit dndbeyond.com/one-dnd and help shape the future of the next generation of Dungeons & Dragons.
    One D&D is the code name for the next generation of D&D, bringing together three initiatives that will shape the future of the game:
    --D&D Rules. This takes what we love about fifth edition and updates the rules of the game to reflect the feedback we have heard from players and where the game is today.
    --D&D Beyond. This will be the platform for your digital D&D collection, content, and tools.
    --D&D Digital Play Experience. In early development, the D&D Digital play experience will offer an immersive player experience, rich creation tools for Dungeon Masters, and a connected space for DMs and players to get together and play D&D.
    Our goal is to give you more D&D wherever you play, whenever you want.

    I want flexibility, freedom, and affordability. Bringing everything into one space increases WotCs control, meaning that it reduces ours. The 3d digital setup means that you can't just import googled or self-created art - if you haven't bought the specific map or miniature from them, you are stuck. INFINITE flexibility, and real-time group creativity, are what make TRPGs the fantastic thing they are, compared to other types of games. Let's not forget that D&D is a business, and innovations are intended to take money out of our pockets and put it into theirs.

      That's true! While they could play nice and allow platforms like Foundry to use your purchased source material with tools that gather the information from their site, they can always argue about this coming at a cost of losing any drm control of the scraped material and start to make things difficult for us. Thus far they have been nice as you buy for the content anyway (you do, right?) and they haven't had any competing VTT of their own. But I'm sure it's going to be fine... 😬

      Straight facts, a lot of people in the comments seem unconcerned but you are on point. The tendency of elites is to invest in anything that becomes popular and monetize the hell out of it. This has happened with video games in the past few decades thru microtransactions and games as a service models leading in an overall decline in the quality of many games. DnD is surging in popularity currently and the corporate yuppies are frothing at the mouth to turn it into a cash cow.

      They said they wanted to get rid of the word "race" in their core rulebooks entirely.
      As I see it, there are two words they could replace it with. Ethnicity and Species. What I suspect they'll do is refer to the proper races as species and the subraces as ethnicities. So high-elf, wood-elf, and drow will be Elvish ethnicities, while Elves and Humans will be seperate species.
      Again, that's just my speculation. Getting rid of half-orcs and half-elves, as I heard they'll do, would make sense, as calling humans and elves different species would imply a half-elf to be the equivalent of a mule to a horse and a donkey or a liger to a lion and a tiger.

    • @RyanMartinRAM
      @RyanMartinRAM 7 месяцев назад

      @@TheBeastCH It's so ironic... the fact that they include these other races makes us realize that we are all "human". Why change it? I think it's great that they use the term "race" to describe non-human species.

    So here are my biggest concerns when it comes to this whole thing:
    1.) I hope they go back and revise how some of the base classes work. Trying to use subclasses for a long time to balance out weaker classes like Sorcerer, Warlock and Ranger has caused some issues. If they can go back and tweak the existing classes and subclasses to make them a bit better, i'll be happy.
    2.) I hope they add better homebrew support for D&D Beyond. As someone who makes a lot of homebrew (especially items) D&D Beyond's charatcer sheet is such a pain to use because you just can't add that stuff onto it. You pretty much HAVE to use official material, which sucks. Just let me edit the damn sheet I want to edit it.
    3.) They need to play nice with 3rd party products and creations. This could very easily go down a path where they try and stop smaller creators and items that aren't official from being published. This can be anything from simple homebrew online, to spellbook apps, to entire published homebrew books and other projects. If they throw their weight around, it can very quickly turn into what Nintendo does to fan games. And this WILL hurt D&D. It won't kill it, but it will leave a nasty scar. Let's hope things don't go down this route.

      @@rafaelantoniobazzanadossan9451 What are you talking about? The ranger has been a rugged survivalist with limited access to druidic magic since Advanced Dungeons & Dragons (1st edition). The "archer" archetype that does nothing but shoot arrows is already filled by playing a DEX-based fighter (or even a rogue, depending on your vision for the character).
      I think a lot of people who first discovered D&D with 5th Edition come into it armed with a lot of preconceptions based in the language of action video games, where terms like ranger, archer, and hunter might as well be interchangeable. There are some legitimate criticisms of the original 5th edition Ranger design, but that's got nothing to do with the flavor of the class itself, as that hasn't changed much in decades.

    • @MajorHickE
      @MajorHickE Год назад +3

      @@rafaelantoniobazzanadossan9451 I agreed with your assessment of the ranger for a long time, until I was shown a very crucial point: the ranger has the capabilities of all those mentioned classes (and arguably more), and can do all of them pretty well without sacrificing its ability to do other things. Fighters might be better on the front lines or with bows, but they generally lack a useful amount of magic or the ability to be stealthy and a competent scout. Rogues are great scouts, but they're completely screwed if they're caught alone. Druids have fantastic magical abilities and can sit on the front line pretty well in Beast form, but those two things tend to be mutually exclusive for most of the game. Do they outshine the ranger in doing those specific things? Sure. But the ranger can do all of them at the same time, even if it's at the cost of not excelling at any one skill or task in particular. That, IMO, is what makes the ranger so useful.

      Don't worry, this push is obviously designed to increase WOTC's capability of directly profiting off of 3rd party content, which is effectively free revenue without effort on their part. Expanding marketing to a much wider demographic and effectively utilizing a digital acquisitions pipeline, while still offering discrete and highly desirable physical content (whether books or minis), will just increase their profit margins sizeably while simultaneously increasing their "dependence" on third party content and DLC (physical and digital). The future of D&D is one where WOTC clearly intends to do less themselves, by making it possible for everybody else to do *much more.* It seems like they're taking what they've learned from the DMs Guild and applying it, writ large, to their entire line of products, while ensuring they offer a highly standardized and universal "core" set of tools (books and the software itself) for said third party content creators to utilize. When the produced 3rd party content is up to a sufficient standard they can purchase it outright (as they retain the right to do of all homebrew created on DMs Guild, for instance) and integrate it into direct products, like the Candlekeep Mysteries and Radiant Citadel books (they're likely to lean on more releases like that, where the vast majority of the content is sourced by 3rd parties but organized under a centralized, WOTC-led project management structure that can ensure maximum revenue potential).

    TLDR they said 3 things:
    1) No 6th edition any time soon, just little tweaks on 5e. (so short rests, bonus actions and other core game mechanics are here to stay!)

      If they change short rests at all, I would expect a reduced duration. Although, if you look at the UA material from today it's already been clarified that an interrupted long rest counts as already taking a short rest, so long as at least 1 hour has already passed. This is a good example of the types of changes I would expect in core rules going forward; lots of little clarifications that don't really change anything.

      Actually, the 3rd party tools exist because Wizards didn't make any of these tools before. Wizard's has seen what fans want based on what they have been paying others to create and they are going to offer it themselves. I'm here for it. I started playing TTRPGS in late 2017 and the first thing I wanted was a better version of Hero Lab for 5E so I invested in DnD Beyond. That service has gotten better every year since I bought the $300 Legendary Bundle in March 2018. I have never regretted that purchase. That allowed me access to every 5E book through Dungeon of the Mad Mage. And I've received a discount on every book I've purchased since then. If you buy every physical 5E hardcover, you will spend way more than $300 or even $500. This hobby can certainly be had on the cheap but I'm an adult who has way less time than I would like so I'm more than happy to pay someone else to do the prep things that I don't care about doing. Let's please not discourage the thing that took Wizard's 8 years to figure out by griping about the price point we don't even know yet.

    "One D&D has three pillars, and one is the ruleset which is built on the base of 5th edition, but updated" So it's another edition, piggybacking on the previous edition, to the point it's basically an edit of 5th and is going to make the products I have and the new ones confusing to use together. I mean they have to be different enough to warrant purchasing them, but they are all usable together. SO now we're going to have 5th ed classic, and ONE D&D (which sounds weirdly like some kind of religous or political reform party) and as things are updated people are gonna be looking up rules and bouncing back and forth with these changes. I'd rather they just launched 6th ed, because then they wouldn't fiddle with the crap I already like and have and muddle things. To be fair, I wasn't playing at the time). This seems closer to 3.5's changes, though it's fiddling about with more fundamental stuff than even in that one. They are looking at altering some core rules (for better or worse depending on your perspective).
      These changes are "compatible" in the sense that you could use them in the same adventures, and it shouldn't destabilize things over much, but not in the sense that you could say, use a dwarf from the new PHB with it's background and things, and then use one from the 5e PHB in the same game without it being confusing, and potentially "unbalanced".
      I mean it's not impossible to work them together, but if these rules go forward, it's not like these changes are nothing. They are changing various definitions and core rules, that has a knock on effect when it comes to compatibility. It also has a big effect on third party market products, and what products are considered legit, and what are "Out of date".

    People here seem worried about the potential spiralling costs of their hobby, and I agree with them. But if you think about it, the main reason the pricing is scary is because of the growing dependency on digital. Newer players especially have become accustomed to digital support being the norm. The rise of the pandemic also moved more players towards VTTs, normalising this type of play.
    At its core, D&D is a tabletop game that you play with friends in the same room (ideally). You only ever actually need the core rulebooks. So, the thing I found most worrisome about this video in terms of cost was the constant reference to “more” stuff. We already have a lot of products filled with more options, and that’s extremely costly if you indulge in all of it, and it looks like your pocket will be picked on more than one occasion if you continue down this route with the evolving edition.
    D&D can be an extremely cheap game to play. You just have to choose where to draw the line with your purchases and develop your imagination to grow the game you want to play.

    • @mazurkian

      I agree. Also, their new version is not making any of your current materials obsolete to those who pick up the new stuff. You don't have to use all the new digital stuff if you don't want.
      From a company/creative perspective, ESPECIALLY after the pandemic, providing the digital boards/maps/and minis that their customers have been spending millions on with other companies/Kickstarter/Patreon it would be foolish not to provide their own service. Especially consider they still produce and release the main big campaigns. It'd be dumb for them to put out a new campaign like Curse of Stradh as nothing but a book, knowing their customers would go out and buy minis, maps or map-making software, art, etc to use in the campaign they produced. It makes way more sense from their perspective to offer all the materials their customers are using.

We had so much fun we hardly left the tent all weekend and played AD&D like that ever afterwards--adapted to how our imaginations wanted it. For me, the unearthed arcana is this: Once you have the basics, all that's truly needed is an imagination and a twenty-sided die. Create and make the game what you and your party want it to be from there. I'd also like to add: We were truly a diverse group of friends. The girl at the beginning of the video who expressed a heart-stirring hero complex would have been most welcome at our table. I think she would have loved the eighties and nineties and probably saved some of our characters from getting destroyed by the monsters in the Fiend Folio.

    The single greatest issue I have is Power Creep. Many of the "new" sub-classes coming out are OP compared to the older ones. This really saddens me and reeks of commercialism. This, above all else, makes my job as a DM more difficult.

    • @Unregistered.HyperCam.2
      @Unregistered.HyperCam.2 Год назад +8

      Power creep/class bloat has been at the forefront since AD&D 2e, only worsening with WotC editions. When you're adding dozens of even hundreds of classes, sub-classes, prestige classes, races(though I guess going forward, -ace- "lineage" won't factor into the equation), etc. over time, and the game has broken down to not just playing an RPG, but _sometimes_ playing an RPG, while other times theorycrafting, min-maxing, and optimizing to the nines, you then either have people complaining about new options being OP, or even more people complaining about new options being worthless and that they're not gonna waste their money buying more books if they're never gonna get something "better."
      As a forever DM, my suggestion for DMing 5e(assuming you want to stick with 5e and not switch to an edition where bloat is lesser or more optional): Give a huge middle finger to the concept of a "balanced encounter" and make encounters that would make logical sense for the world your game takes place in, not encounters that would make logical sense for the numbers on your PCs' character sheets. If you have a group of 9th-level PCs, they're going to sneeze on kobolds and kill them. Likewise, if there's a cult of necromancers in a city, led by a lich, the PCs don't have to spend 5 levels fighting zombies and skeletons, then another 5 fighting ghouls and wights, before even getting a whiff of the lich; they could encounter him at level 1, and if they're hard-headed enough to think an obviously extremely powerful undead wizard will fall to them and won't outright kill them, the players will either learn better or stick their head in the sand until you give in to them(NEVER do this) or they leave.

    • @_bats_

      There's power creep but the newer, more powerful options are just so much more fun to play. The older, less effective options were always bad - we just didn't realise it. There's nothing really wrong with power creep in a cooperative, collaborative game like D&D unless you have people at the same table with vastly different power levels in their builds where encounter balance means some people are just not having fun. In other words, power creep is only bad in D&D when it's uneven across player options.

    • @Unregistered.HyperCam.2
      @Unregistered.HyperCam.2 Год назад +9

      @@_bats_
      1) Newer, more powerful options are rarely "more fun" to play, unless your only gauge of fun is damage numbers. This is not just the case of D&D, but any RPG, tabletop, video game, or otherwise. In MMOs, they call people that chase the Flavor-Of-The-Month class/build "meta slaves" because instead of playing whatever class/spec they find most fun, they re-roll for whatever is top DPS/heals/best tank for that patch.
      2) When power creep happens in an MMO, you're usually paying a subscription fee just to play, and are only paying for more content when an expansion drops, and that's if even that for an MMO. When it comes to a TTRPG, new options in new books causing old options to look like crap incentivizes you to buy the new books so you're not left in the dust. _That_ is where the imbalance matters, not in encounter design, which is perfectly fine being unbalanced, as long as it's thought through and not just placed to TPK the party or give them something to steamroll.
      3) There always has been and always will be power imbalance among different character types in D&D; this has been the case since clerics were just as good in melee combat as fighting-men, and magic-users were able to decimate an entire city block once they got access to 3rd- and 4th-level magic. The issues are trying to create an illusion of balance - to the point of homogenization of class mechanics - and bloating classes/sub-classes in the name of balance while invalidating tons of prior classes/sub-classes to sell books.

    • @_bats_
      @_bats_ Год назад +1

      I think that's a totally unfair and inaccurate assessment. Let's look at the Purple Dragon Knight vs. the Rune Knight. The latter is obviously more powerful than the former, but it's also loads more fun to play. The Purple Dragon Knight gives you a bunch of ribbon abilities that apply when you do the things you already do as a fighter; they aren't interesting new abilities to use, you aren't presented with any options - you just get slightly more out of what you already were doing. The Rune Knight, on the other hand, adds tons of flavour, presents a bunch of choices to be made, gives the fighter all sorts of fun new active features that they can decide to use, most notably in pillars of play other than combat. It's better designed in every way.
      I know all about flavour-of-the-month meta builds, MMO design, constant updates to earn a buck. I've seen that in a whole slew of contexts. Is that part of what's going on over at WotC? Absolutely. I think it would be nuts to argue otherwise. While I agree that homogenisation is a concern (how many ways of getting advantage can we possibly have?!?), I think it's very clear that the more recent content which gives players more options (even if those are more powerful) is resulting in happier players.
      Here's an example of exactly that: in my first ever game of 5e D&D, a player was playing a PHB Beastmaster Ranger. First round of the first combat, the character's wolf companion is insta-gibbed by a crit from a bugbear. The limitations on getting a new animal companion meant that player had to go through the entire rest of the dungeon as a ranger with no subclass. She was miserable and quit the campaign after a couple of sessions in that dungeon. The new Beastmaster would have allowed her to bring her wolf back (though with a resource expenditure as a tax) so she could stay in the game playing the character she wanted to be.
      That is game designers learning from their mistakes and improving their product in action. Is there greed as motivation? If so, how much does that matter to the player?

If you want a 2D battlemap there are hundreds available online, pre-made and even animated if you want. The amount of work to build a fight scene in 3D has to be more complex and time consuming. Maybe they can include random map generators, and enough tile sets to cover every type you would need (forest, desert, snow, houses, caves, ships etc). Using it for a pre-made one shot would work okay, but building a whole campaign in 3D sounds like considerably more work. Very interested to see how they look to overcome this.

    I don’t do most social media, but I still wanted to get it out there to you folks at WOTC.
    Your game means the world to me.
    These past six years, D&D has become a huge part of my life, I play weekly have easily spent hundreds of Euros on your books and over Covid, a lion’s share of my interactions with my friends has been through D&D 5e. And even outside of directly playing or preparing, D&D has been there, through online creators like Critical Role and so many others.
    You have allowed a huge and positive community to build around your game and that community has in turn grown your game and your profits.
    So, please. Stop.
    You can bring out new source books or editions I will personally not like and that is fine, taste is subjective and as long as I can keep my books, it’s easy for me to pick and choose which ruleset I want to run with and your adventure modules have, over the years, only gotten better.
    But what I am hearing about the new OGL is worrying.
    Please, consider the community that has made D&D what it is right now, the hands off approach to the game’s license has fostered so much vibrant creativity and created an amazing symbiosis for smaller artists and creators to make a living while still benefiting you.
    Don’t pull the rug out from under them, please. My trust in your company has been wavering the last year or so and this was another huge red flag.
    Do not make the new OGL, without the community you are actively working to destroy right now, your game will suffer. Understand that you will lose not only reputation, but also money, customers.
    I for one, will be looking to other games if your current trajectory continues and I know for a fact that so will many of my friends.
    Dungeons and Dragons is all about creativity. Please, keep that creativity that is the beating heart of this game alive.
    You have shown with 5e, up to Tasha’s anyhow, that you can back up your claim to the title of world’s greatest Role Playing Game and that goodwill and positive reputation will carry you a long way, but the cracks are beginning to show.
    Reputation isn’t enough and goodwill can be lost. Trust can be lost.
    Please do not let me lose my trust.
    Sincerely,

I don’t oppose that, but if that’s the focus of the expansion I’m more concerned with what will be lost along the way. I just invested hundreds into DDB as I finally decided to take the leap towards DMing instead of just playing. I’m now worried that I have invested in the wrong platform. If their One D&D starts limiting accessibility to other groups/platforms, I’ll abandon DDB and only use those other platforms. I’ll also do everything in my power to gain some kind of compensation for my investment if it is no longer what I purchased. Similar moves by companies are why I’m no longer an avid gamer. I’ll stop recommending DDB to friends and players until I see where this is going.

    I believe the more that the game is in your headspace and imagination - the stronger it is.
    The more vivid detailed environment, the more it draws away the power of mind.
    Does that make sense?
    An entire table of players all picture something different from one another no matter how a dm may describe or present it. We all create the perfect image we wish perceive. That's powerful.
    However, when you have a fully realised 3D play space like a video game (despite you trying not to have it branded that way) all the players share the exact same image. It's interesting, but kinda saddening and backwards from what makes it special imo.

We also semi recently had a player move on because he absolutely hates the mechanics of pathfinder and was also having some lifestyle changes at the same time he was at his limits for enjoying this campaign and we don't hear from him much now but have a different player joined in who's interesting enough to make it less of a loss.

    Thus far I'm a fan of most of the rules in the released playtest material. I like the direction that, mechanically, d&d is going. (though I'm worried about some wordings, i.e. the new crit rules)
    However, a lot of this just reads to me as "we have competitors and we don't like that.". To me, the heart of d&d is and always will be it's fans, players, and DMs. Not the fancy virtual tabletops or a Single Amalgamated D&D Website Experience. As they said: "We did a smart thing with 5th Edition, by listening to the fans", so my sentiment is not one that's entirely unknown.
    With D&D "officially" being amalgamated into a single website, I heavily worry that many third party programs, websites, apps, and tools might get the hammer from Wizards. On top of that, there's the worry that, if this new edition is so heavily based around D&D Beyond and this new VTT, that new players are going to simply be priced out of participating in what is probably one of my favorite and most fulfilling hobbies.
    I urge Wizards of the Coast to look at the evolution of D&D less as "how do we centralize this" and more "how do we embrace our community". Because in my humble opinion, attempting to make lovingly crafted third-party tools obsolete is not how you embrace your community.
    P.S.: Please just call it 5.5e

I do agree that several rules need redone or outright removed. I also like the digital idea to alter stuff but I still prefer and will remain as a Theater of the Mind format. I like wargames, I like RP games, I don't want my RP game thought to be a wargame. Having to worry all of the time about exact placements, movements, and positions, just go with it in your mind and RP. It's also why I never use maps but draw the map on a whiteboard as the PCs see each room. I don't want them knowing all of the rooms, layout, or setup, but they need to explore and they will miss things. My only fear is that they're going to basically make the game easier for casual players with the new spells and races to play. Meaning it will just be more stuff for me to ban at the table.

    Most people don't look like seven-foot near-demigod Aragorn; Legolas the most broad-shouldered and muscular elf since Feanor; stout and wide Gimli the dwarf; or the tiny halflings. But they could still see aspects of themselves in these characters and the idea that anyone can be a hero regardless of their appearance as long as they're willing to work hard and sacrifice in the name of doing good.
    Especially in the modern day, with countless grants and classes and weaponized guilt that's been institutionalized likely since before this woman went into high school, she's had every institution bending over backward to make her feel welcome. If people like her still don't feel included, the onus is not on us but on her to either improve herself until she can imagine herself as a hero or to rein in her narcissism because she as she is now wouldn't function as a hero.
    At this point we're not even being inclusive: we're bullying the people who used to be in these spaces and courting the very people who used to make fun of nerds and insult them for their hobbies.

    New players and a host of those who have been already integrated into D&D Behond & VTT D&D 5E Modules plug ins will see this and hop on over. WoTC will push this hard with marketing. This will chew away at player bases from other VTT like Roll20, Tale Spire, and Fantasy Grounds to name a few. This business shift will change the D&D culture drastically. If we think how players interacted with D&D from 1970s till today even after Covid shifted lots to VTTs. It will become a whole different monster than we have now though. It will be only a matter of time before digital D&D content will be largely accessible only through WoTC new system. I'm not saying they will pull 5E or whatever else, but going forward with his new system & marketing idea. There is no hiding it and it is to be expected, don't think for a second micro transactions wont be the at the core, not just Modules, Core Books, ect. We are talking a BIG heavy hitting ones from 3d miniatures; monster packs, player characters, weapons, voice lines, music, 3D tile sets; plus the same tiles just a different environment theme, Oh you want a potion belt on you mini? $$$ the list will go on. There will be no doubt of this. Now we can say, but we have that already? This is true in a way, but there is so many communities that come together and create free content for us to use. Here is the kicker... WoTC will not allow this in their new system. We might hope 3rd party creators can put their content on their market at the price of WoTC hands in their sales. My point is I fear they will not allow 3rd party assets into their system. WoTC will create a 1DD ecosystem island pulling users into it while they will be less likely to shift away. This is do to the investment that this system will chain them in with. This is an obviously disgusting over reach of GREED but whats new. SAY NO to One-D&D.

One time license purchase, user-friendly character sheets that can be automatically level'd up, everything can be managed with drag-and-drop mechanics (like throwing items in their inventory or spells to their spellbook) and so much of the community makes useful modules to fit what you want/need. And legends tell of some wizards who install the Plutonium module from 5etools to pull anything/everything from the 5etools site straight into Foundry (e.g. to access to content from books you own the physical copies for so you don't keep giving WOTC your paycheck each time they build a new tool to sell you digital copies of something you've already bought multiple times). Tldr; I've given WOTC thousands of my dollars but Foundry loves me unconditionally.
