I fell in love with the Trails games with Cold Steel in 2016, but I have never tried the previous games until 2023... Then I spent the first 6 months of this year playing only the Trails games, from Sky 1 to Azure and man, what AN experience! Absolutely some of, if not the, best JRPG experience of my life.

So a few points just to clarify :
-Bracers aren't cops. There are cops in Zemuria, however Bracers isn't tied to a government, and is international. They can do things that cops can't, and vice versa.
-We only get to see Liberl in this game, and Zemuria is the whole world.
-EP is for Epstein Points (the dude responsible for the Orbal Revolution) or Energy Points idk (the first one sounds cooler)
I'd like to add that the way the world is presented really makes sense, as Estelle comes from a small village, and doesn't know a lot about the outside world. And there's a good dynamic between Joshua and Estelle, as Josh is the smart cold-headed, pragmatic, and a bit "dark" kid, while Estelle is just the opposite.
Anyways, great video ! My favorite entry in the series is Trails in the Sky 3rd

Welcome to the Trails fandom :D
You really have strong willpower to not start SC just after FC.
A clarification about the start of the video, Trails is part of the Legend of Heroes, which at the same time is part of Dragon Slayer series.
Legend of Heroes I & II are considered Dragon Slayer VI and are not related to Xanadu, which is Dragon Slayer II.
So you got Legend of Heroes I & II which is the Iselhasa duology, Legend of Heroes III to V which is the Gagharv trilogy, and finally Trails, which so far we have Legend of Heroes VI to IX.
Trails in the Sky FC, SC and 3rd is considered to be Legend of Heroes VI.
Zero and Azure is Legend of Heroes VII
Cold Steel 1 to 4 and Reverie is Legend of Heroes VIII
and so far, Daybreak 1, 2 and probably next years 3, is Legend of Heroes IX.
Nayuta Boundless Trails is an spinoff of Trails as well. And Ys vs Trails in the Sky is a crossover fighting game with a lot of characters from previous franchises.
There are also 2 mobile games, Akatsuki no Kiseki (gacha game with a side story that happens during Zero/Azure arc), and Northern War gacha you mention that happens between CS2 and CS3. They are not needed to understand the mani series however.

I can't recommend enough going backwards to Dragon Slayer IV: Drasle Family, released here in North America on the NES in 1989 as Legacy of the Wizard. You play as a full family: mom, dad, son, daughter, and dog. Grandma and grandpa supply and accept password saves.
The goal is to explore a dungeon, defeat the bosses, eventually make your way to the dragon and slay it. Along the way, you collect money, tools, and switch between members to use their unique skills to reach different areas. All this, and a score by the legendary Yuzo Koshiro. This was one of my favorite games as a kid, and it's still great today.
The funniest part of this video was you describing my exact same experience with the Trails series. I don't game at my laptop much, and the PS3 version of Cold Steel is very clearly a PSP port, so I don't see myself getting to this franchise any time soon. I know some people swear by how great they are, but if I wanted a retro RPG, I'll play Phantasy Star again.
Keep up the good work out there!

I also got into the game pretty late. I did not know about the Trails series until roughly 8 years ago, but it took me a few more years from there until I finally got around to play one. I started into the series with Cold Steel 1 and after a short while I knew, that I would play the older games as well. But since the game ended on a cliffhanger, I had to complete CS2 as well to get to a good point to pause and go back to the previous arcs. Initially I had planned to just rush through the mainstory of the 3 Sky games, but as I was playing, I had way more fun with those games than I thought I would and ended up talking to every NPC anyway. Then while I was halfway through Sky2, Trails from Zero released in the West and when Trail to Azure followed, I had caught up to the end of the Sky arc, bought both Crossbell games on the same day and played them right after each other. Then only two years after starting Cold Steel and 7 completed games later, I could finally return to the Erebonian side of the saga with Cold Steel 3 and 4. Now I have only Reverie left to get through, before the next game comes over to the West. It's hard to assign a favorite, since all of the games build up on each other and sometimes the later games from everyone of the arcs feel more satisfying because all of the buildup from previous games pays off! Whatever you do, do NOT start CS3 before you've completed every single game that comes before it. You'll understand once you get there.

I am glad to see you did not took the "easy road" and started with the more approachable and graphically more appealing Cold Steel part. Experiencing this series from the very first game until the last game is really a big, but hugely rewarding, task. You will be glad you did so. I promise.
I myself bought the first Trails Of Cold Steel game years ago because it was on sale and looked interesting. I was not even a hour in, when I noticed it seems to be part of a bigger story. After checking that out, I was pointed to the Trails In The Sky as starting point of the Trails series. After some deliberation, I dropped Cold Steel and jumped into the Sky "trilogy". It was the best decision I ever made. Not only I played the first three "Sky" games, but by the time I was finished with them the "Crossbell" games where translated by the Geofront guy's. So I literally played every game in the series in the release order, to finally end with the "Reverie" game released last summer. It was a hell of a great jurney, and what makes me happy, is that it is not over yet. Next year the journey will continue, and I could not be more happy with that.

The fact that a side character can and has his/her own story that can span several games, the overarching story, the personalities, the game mechanics, the way story and personalities are build and referred to throughout the whole game. And that are only a few aspects, but the most important ones.
If you cannot grasp that, I am afraid it's a lost cause to give you some understanding about what makes these games great. In that case you better give up and play some games that you are more capable to connect too. I first refunded it after I didn't get into it, got it recommended by a friend once I told them I loved Ys games. Sky 1 didn't really resonate with me then.
Funnily enough, one steam Christmas sale I was looking for Persona 4 as I wanted to give the Persona series another try (I played P3 before and dropped it just like Sky FC) but it wasn't discounted. By some miracle I saw Cold Steel 1 was discounted and I said "what the hell let me try this one, I can just refund it too if I don't like it".
That was it for me. I absolutely loved that game, I got so obsessed I bought CS2 before I was even done with the game. By the time I beat CS1 and got that insane cliffhanger, I jumped into 2 instantly and bought the Sky trilogy, as well as CS3 and 4. I think CS really helped me get invested into the world of Zemuria, I loved the soundtrack and combat in it so it made me want to go back to the Sky games.
I know most people rave about Trails story and worldbuilding and I do love it too (especially the lore and mysteries of ancient civilization), but imo the best part of the games is the combat and music.
Can't wait until you see some of the massive lore reveals later on.

I just like u had bought this game a while before actually playing it. And I decided to jump into it and trying it out after having played Tales series.
And after I finished this first game I was hooked, just as u say the story and character is just fantastic. But the thing is, in my opinion, it gets better for each passing game (Trails in the sky the third being the exception as it felt like filler, still good, but not as great).
Unfortunately I have not yet played "trails from zero" yet despite having played cold steel series. This was cause it wasn't translated when I started playing.
But I can say one thing at least, the way everything is connected throughout all games and are referred to and talked about is just extremely satisfying.
If I were to say one "flaw" it would be that of what I've heard, the story is only about halfway done. That would mean we are looking at at least 6-7 games more to finish of the story.
This is amazing news but at same time sad we have to wait a long time for it to be done.

The reason they call it Energy Points instead of AP or MP probably has to do with the fact that the magic is actually called Orbal Energy in universe. All of the technology in the game is powered by Orbal Energy, and there's actually a bunch more lore behind it but that would be spoilers since it relates to future games.
Also, I highly recommend reading the in universe books as they are pretty well written and do contain minor foreshadowing for characters in future games.
I've been on a nonstop Trails binge since I first cam across this series back in 2021. Stated with sky and I've been fortunate enough to get to play them in original release order up to Cold Steel 4, not counting Nayuta: Boundless Trails. Will I be able to finish CS4 and Reverie, AND Nayuta before Daybreak releases in this summer? Probably not, because as much as I love the series, playing so many of these games back to back can get a little tiring, so I need to take breaks and play other games in order to keep from getting burned out.

First video if yours I've seen. Hope you don't mind a long comment. You better not since you just played a game with like a gajillion words already =P. Glad you are starting to get into this series. The way you gush about it about simply growing up and not killing god and such like that is something I really cherish about the game too. I find it much easier to be emotionally invested in fictional characters when they are seemingly realistic in terms of humanity, power, goals, etc. I don't find it any more 'epic' that you're battling a god when you're playing as someone that CAN battle a god, than to battle a highschool bully when you're playing a character who is very much at the mercy of a highschool bully, and in fact I find the latter story to be MORE compelling when it gets resolved in a good way because I can relate to the process unlike secretly being the magical chosen one or having long lost superpowers or somehow ends up strong enough to lift a planet just because I killed enough sewer rats or something.
In any case, you asked, so I shall answer (I have this autistic bad habit where I actually listen to people and do as they ask if it's reasonable). My fave game in the series is... Sky FC. don't get me wrong, it's not all downhill from here. But Sky FC took absolute nothing, and made the foundation for a giant series I adore, and was simultanenously compelling on its own too. Though I have to admit I too thought the game was pretty standard average RPG fare at first. It wasn't until that chapter in Ruan when I was on the boat chasing down a certain villain on another boat, when I realized how effing cool/badass Estelle was, again, in that realistically written/human/grown way, that I realized that damn, I'm actually really invested in the game now. I love that Ruan chapter.
Alas, the Zeiss chapter is my least fave, though I like the music in that town, it's so unique and a timecapsule of sorts. They dont' make music like that anymore. Kinda like old 80s elevator music. I miss that stuff.
That said lots of people like SC more than FC, and more than most other games in the series, and they like Azure more than zero, and they like cold steel 2 more than 1. But I'm the opposite. I like FC more than SC, zero more than Azure, and cold steel 1 more than 2. All of the first games humanize the cast more than the later games, but I can understand people liking the second games more due to higher stakes. I do like cold steel 3 and 4 more than 1 though. Sky SC's final chapter is really special though. But getting to there is just too formulaic for my tastes.
Actually that's my biggest gripe with sky SC. The antagonists come across as Saturday cartoon 'I like kicking dogs cuz I'm evil. MWAHAHAHA' to me (they don't actually do that so no that's not a spoiler). They didn't humanize them as well as the non-antagonists were humanized. HOWEVER, later on in the series, the antagonists are very much better written IMO, so don't let that get you down if you notice it in SC too, which I suspect you might based on how you expressed yourself in this video.
One thing your review fails to mention. I don't know if you forgot, or if you *sweats*, didn't experience it. The 'unimportant' npc dialogue in this series. It's actually deep. Lots of seemingly ignorable NPCs appear later on in the game, or even in future games, and they have continuity in their own personal story. For example, the old lady upstairs in the item shop is trying to get her son (or was it grandson?) downstairs hooked up with a girlfriend, and every time you talk to her after an event, you can see how she is progressing with her goal. Oh yeah, they all have names too, though in future games you'll see some generic ones like 'tourist' or whatever. One of my faves is in Zero/Azure+later games. A little girl who secretly tries to adopt a cat, only for her loving and devoteddad to catch her, and change his mind about letting her have a cat. But who later on (the dad not the girl) gets caught up in some criminal activity, and then loses his high paying career, makes the family have to downgrade to an apartment, but continue to be loving and supportive of each other, as the girl excells in education and having a kind of friendship/rivalry with the boy next door who isn't academically inclined, is aware he isn't as smart, but just wont let her 'win'.
Also, in case you don't know. 'talk' to the treasure chests after you open them, they have unique messages, not 'this chest is empty' (at least they do for the sky games and the crossbell fan translations. I don't know about the 'official' crossbell games).
Last, I'm calling the FBI, telling them that you went on a rant about being sick of so much CP, even though I suspect you're Canadian since you mentioned nova scotia and I think if you were 'murican' you'd mention similar cuisine but from Maine (I think it's Maine, I'm no 'murican).
Also. LOL blackened death metal. I love it, I'll give it a listen thank you =). Some of my fave bands are Stormlord, Limbonic art, that one Daemonarch album (why only 1, whyy), etc.

Good video, the Sky trilogy has hold up admirably well, most 20 years old games are dragged by design of that era, but these masterfully handcrafted games hold up. Sure the last two arcs (Cold Steel and Kuro) hace way better graphics and the playability is better, but Sky and Crossbell are so charming and the foundation for what lies ahead. I envy you habing so msny great games to play now, and in the chronological and release order no less.

It'll be interesting to get the perspective of a self-professed anarchist when he arrives at cold the steel arc, and gets to contend with Erebonia's like 15 different flavors of state police and military (and all the gradients in between).

1:00 i know nothing of your economic status, but buying games on release because u might play them later is not very good from an economic standpoint. Theyre way cheaper the day u finally get around to it. So unless ur so rich it doesnt matter consider stopping that practise 😅

what you are calling "Orbals" are actually called Quartz. Quartz are made from sepith and are equipped in a Battle Orbment. Orbments themselves just refer to any kind of machine that works off of Orbal Energy, and have a variety of uses beyond casting arts, which I believe is the in-game reasoning for calling them Energy Points.

It's a Japanese game so they probably aren't aware of the potential innuendo of what "CP" could mean. I think some western games even use that abbreviation for stuff like "combat power" so its more on you for assuming something bad tbh.

I think it's a bit of a shame to write off the gagharv trilogy (the legend of heroes 3-4-5) just like that, but I also find somewhat understandable, considering the state of the PSP version of these games. I will, however, put in my two cents, since I do not know what you do know or have heard about these games.
The only current way to play these games in english as of writing this is to play the PSP "remakes" of these games, however, not only is the localization very poor, the battle system has also been heavily altered: the original PC-88 version, the PSX version and the windows version use an unorthodox real time battle system (I don't fully understand it, since it's all in japanese, but it kinda reminded me of Final Fantasy XII), while the remake changed it to a very basic (and slow) turn-based battle system (basic meaning that there is not much happening). The music was also rearranged by a different composer, and although it is subjective, I find it vastly inferior to the original ones and, in some cases, completely miss the mark in terms of vibes.
However, despite all of these grievances, which I knew about before I started playing these games, I am still glad I played all three games, even though it was the PSP versions (while using speed hacks on PPSSPP). So, I would still recommend playing these games, but I also understand not wanting to bother. Now, if only there was a translation for at least the windows version. While the geofront translation team have announced they would translate the windows version of the first game, there hasn't been any update on their website for a whole year now (still crossing my fingers).

Minor correction for the original Dragon Slayer game and its sequels: they were all action rpgs. (Not to mention Dragon Slayer is considered the FIRST action rpg ever!) The first Legend of Heroes game came several years later, and it is a Dragon Slayer spinoff-set in the Dragon Slayer world, but this time turn based. And I'm not saying you don't know this-but it wasn't mentioned, so worth noting: all the Legend of Heroes games before Trails have nothing to do with Trails. The Dragon Slayer duology and Ghagarv trilogy were each their own things.

This is a game I want to try one day, but...... I just have to much to play. I've only beaten 4 Tales of games, among others, so it's hard to justify getting into another 10+ game series.

welp, it is teased that kuro 3 , a.k.a trails through daybreak 3, a.k.a official new name ( The Legend of Heroes: Kai no Kiseki -Farewell O Zemuria- ), is going beyond the Zemuria continent.
And hinted that harem boy Rean going to appear in that game. (though it may be false hint)

I played this game 2 years ago. It was amazing. My favorite Sky game is teh 3rd though. I liked the more personal story of Kevin and the game gave us some really great lore setups. My favorite arc right now is Crossbell though, because those characters are just the goat. Cold Steel is great too. It has Toval. Read Carnelia. And then play Sky the 3rd. You can also wait until Cold Steel. The books are amazing and damn it, I should probably read them already. I think Reverie has them all, so maybe I will wait until then. I like that one of the books had a physical version in the LE. I am replaying Crossbell right now and just finished Zero. I am taking a break before I replay Azure. There are a lot of games and I do not have time for all of them. I still love Sky though. Silver Will is still my favorite song.

that said, maybe it's time to go back and finish the first game lol. does anybody know if they are planning to bring the rest of these to the switch?

X-seed has localization rights to the 3 sky games and first 2 cold steel games. Dealing with Trails nearly broke them, so they're done, but another company can't take over either. So likely there will not be any new releases or ports of those 5. NISA has localization rights to the Crossbell duology, cold steel 3 and 4, Reverie, and likely anything going forward, which is why we suddenly got a big catch up recently with 3 localizations in the past 12 months. I played the whole series on Steam, it's the only platform that has all the games.

Trails is awesome, the story goes DEEEP, things you think in this game don't matter will become hugely important down the line. Anyways, small criticism as someone who just stumbled on this vid randomly, your vids would be a lot better if you got to the point quicker. I clicked on it cause I wanted to hear a first time Trails player share their thoughts on the game, it didn't really need extensive detailed sections going over how arts and crafts work or the rest of the battle system. Anyone who's played the game already knows this stuff and for new fans I doubt this is a useful way of explaining. Felt more like a guy reading off the instruction book for the game at times than anything.
