    Honestly, this and Panzer Dragoon Saga were absolute revelations to me as a mere 10/11 year old. No one else has ever heard of them though, as for some reason Sega decided to release some of the best games ever made just before the console died. Although, in a way, that has always made these games a little more special to me.
    Anyway, however much I may have changed since then, my one instinct about the Playstation was right. The console had some great games, but it also set on course a lot of the casual gamer trends that led to triple A gaming slop. Sega was basically pumping out what would now be seen as quirky and engaging indie games (and arcade ports) at a time when the whole world was looking for mass appeal. The Dreamcast even more than the Saturn in some respects. And now we're at a point where we are so saturated with these games that a lot of 90s games actually feel fresh.

    • @Momoka7
      @Momoka7 8 месяцев назад +1

      The sad thing is, that Sega never makes a Panzer Dragoon RPG remake. I am pretty sure there would be quite some people willing to buy that, as it was back then very unique and would still be unique a RPG. Plus it had a pretty good story.

      Not even anything close to a spiritual successor. Once I had a dream that they had a full 3D 360° viewable holographic Shining Force III with the original SGI graphics raw 3D models on a tabletop holographic display. It looked crazy real, it was like PlayStation 7 level technology. Look up Zebra imaging 3D displays on YT, it looked kind of like that.

      @@Leishtek you liked the 3D or 2D ones the most? For 2D the game I'm let's playing is wonderful, for 3D I don't know because honestly I didn't like SF3 (I played the entire trilogy and didn't like it), it looked ugly and the characters weren't as personalized as the ones in SF1/2, all centaurs had the same stats and so on, very underwhelming IMO.

    • @Leishtek
      @Leishtek 7 месяцев назад

      @@LetsPlayRetroRPGs The move to 3D was hard for every franchise, and lol yeah SF3's character models did not age well. I think the animation was serviceable for the time and the special effects were fantastic! Voice acting was atrocious, but at this point I put it in the same camp with Star Ocean 2 where I actually freakin love the hilariously bad voice acting.
      But in my opinion the reason I loved SF3 so much was because of how much of a leap the storytelling, character development, and world building took. And the music was exceptional! I've had a brief look at every SF game since and I'm sad to see it doesn't really look like they were ever able to recapture the magic of SF3. =(

    I honestly wouldn't have gotten into the Shining Force series, if I hadn't decided to go with the SEGA Saturn.
    It was my first foray into Shining Force, after dipping my toes into the series with Shining Wisdom and then Shining the Holy Ark. I hadn't played a strategy RPG at that point but I can honestly say that I absolutely loved the first scenario and was devastated by the news that the other parts weren't getting translated.
    Thank goodness for the amazing Shining Force translation team (and Shining Force Central)!! i originally played through a japanese copy of the 2nd part with a printed out walthrough back in the day - not as bad as it sounds - but the English translations are amazing.

    When you're in middle school sometimes you have some issues with perspective.

    Its also my favorite srpg of all time and I have played a ton of them. Why they didnt keep this alive is mystifying. Why no one has used this style and method to build a new franchise/spiritual successor is bewildering. This series just has an atmosphere nothing else has, Perfectly blending whimsical fantasy, excellent tactical gameplay yet simple enough for beginners, while fun for experts, and melding anime themes, artistic style, and "cuteness" with very serious tones in a way that works perfectly. Telling a story in 3 that was mature and complicated, without TRYING to "seem" mature and complicated. Someday maybe someone will rekindle the magic of SF3, and the series as a whole.
    Shining force wasnt marketed to children. I was around back then, and even back then it was considered a title for "mature audiences", mainly due to the themes of war, death, occult practices, and sexual inuendo's. SO let Julian get shit faced drunk. The guys life is a wreck.....
    BTW did you know there were choices in 1 that affect 3? Or that there are some characters you can ONLY get if certain party members are either not recruited, or not saved when they are in danger? If you didnt know, look them up. One example is in one of the earliest battles with the archer. If you let him die instead of saving him, you get a kick ass tank driver.

    2:00 Hmm... I got Shining Force 3 back in the day when it was brand new, and its graphics where very good. For the time being very good. The Saturn did not have any of that texture warping the PlayStation had, or the weird wonky animations it also had. 3D Graphically I found N64 and Saturn games leagues better then PlayStation 1 games. Which is why I bought Tomb Raider back then first on the Saturn, and later on the PlayStation. The only thing missing on the Saturn version was real transparency, as it had to use dithering.
    But I understand, if you played it when the Dreamcast or PlayStation 2 was out... of course they where leagues better. Back in the day the jumps in 3D graphics was real.
    7:00 That is not the whole story. I heard that Sega stopped supporting Camelot when they where about finishing up Shining Force III's third CD and they struggled getting it out, but they did get it out. Sega gave up way earlier on the Saturn in US and Europe while it still ran in JP strong and was pretty close to the PlayStation. Sega kind of rushed the Dreamcast which then ran a couple years and was sold pretty well in US and Europe but because they wasted so much money on Genesis/Mega Drive "Sega CD" and 32X launches that then didn't sell at all they went bankrupt since the Dreamcast didn't sell that good. When they went under, some Japanese Millionaire helped them not totally vanish, because of pity. So the name got taken for a publishing Company, since it has all the Sega titles under its belt they also make some games.
    Sadly they not make a lot remakes of those classic hits, like the Shining Force games(or really just a new Shining Force game) or Panzer Dragoon RPG.
    BTW the three egg characters are not useless...

    I only recently finally got to experience scenario's 2 and 3 a couple years ago after having wanted to for pretty much my entire life. I always hated that only scenario 1 ever received a translation. I started trying to learn Japanese so I could play this game, lol.
    Scenario 1 had the best plot and difficulty curve, Scenario 2 had the best battles, and scenario 3 had the best characters. Such a shame it all kinda falls apart in Scenario 3 though, and I hated the twist with Domaric. It was so convoluted and derp. Still, I love the game and SF3 holds a special place in my heart.
    I hated choosing between Edmund and Produn. I want both! D: and I hated that each characters dialog was just "......" when you play as them. It made no sense and was annoying, especially since they had dialog in other scenarios. Strange choice making them silent protag's when they're not.
    And with the amount of effort you have to go through in Scenario 1 to keep General Rogan alive in Scenario 2, I was pissed he doesn't actually join you, and is just an AI controlled character.
    And the most hilarious part of the game is that literally every single person in the Republic is a traitor aside from Synbios's dad and Produn, how tf did their society function? XD

      @@RPGFort If you love metal and medieval strategy games, you should check out Kingdom Under Fire: The Crusaders and Heroes. They were original XBox exclusives, but they got ported to Steam a few years ago. Despite being developed in South Korea, the game is just non-stop metal and dark fantasy and it rules. Highly recommended.

    48:18 Oh, how wrong you are about this one. The Saturn's graphical might for the time is looked back upon fondly by many, myself very much included.
    I also think this game mostly looks perfectly fine. I really don't understand what makes these battle models look any worse than what FFVII had going on.

    I honestly could never really get into it (and I played the entire trilogy, still). I loved SF1/2 far more. Maybe I don't like old 3D but it's not just that, the gameplay seemed pretty dull and redundant, and characters were all the same within a given class, whereas the first two had more variety.

    Ah yes, the times were both tubular and radical, and I'd even go so far as to say occasionally gnarly and bodacious. I'm completely unfamiliar with this game, so thank you for making this video. I'm a huge Shining Force and tactical RPG fan in general, and this looks great.
    First of all, this is probably one of the best looking Saturn games. It has a bright and colorful palette, the spites are nice, and I think the 3D characters have a lot of personality and detail, especially when compared to FF7 and their blank faces. Remember, the Saturn gave us the messes that were Panzer Dragoon and Burning Rangers as first party titles, and they looked AWFUL. Not to mention the Saturn gave birth to the absolute worst game in all of Shin Megami Tensei, RONDE, a game once described by Marsh as, "Man, this game looks like poopa." Compared to those graphical abominations, Shining Force 3 looks next-gen.
    Second, the amount of content is staggering. Two promotions sounds awesome. I would have to get into all the ruins as well. Between that and three storylines, I'm in love. This is probably also the only time that Republicans are going to be seen as heroes.
    This was your best review, and I'm sure it took a while. Not every video needs to be the Epic of Gilgamesh that this one was, but it's appreciated. My only regret is not being able to play it easily. Maybe some day.
    Thanks again. I'm going to go hug my cat.

    48:22 You're dead wrong. Saturn was always meant to support 3d graphics. You say "they realized last minute that everyone was going to polygons". Ummmm... Sega CREATED the polygon revolution of the early nineties.

      Not accurate. Saturn was designed to be a 2d powerhouse initally, then did pivot to early 3d after learning more about the PSX. Their 3d hardware was modeled on the Titan-V arcade set which powered, among others, Radiant Silvergun. Re-wiring the insides of the Saturn caused it to suck both at 2d and 3d.

    • @opaljk4835
      @opaljk4835 11 месяцев назад +2

      @@simondaniel4028it definitely doesn’t suck at 2d or 3d. Not really anymore than the other main consoles, imo. But there are some incredibly cool 2D games that hold up super well. The 3D on the Saturn wasn’t always great, but it certainly wasn’t pitiful in any sense. There are some great and innovative stuff. Idk, it’s never going to be an argument people will concede to, but as someone who grew up with the ps1 and n64 I’ve definitely been pretty impressed by some of what the Saturn was capable of.

      @@simondaniel4028 Capcom, SNK, and Taito, the kings of 2d arcade games, all had their best ports on the Saturn, so I don't know what you're smoking with the "sucks at 2d bit." Hell, the definitive port of Street Fighter Alpha 3 is still the Saturn port to this day. Also whoever told you the hardware was based on the Titan-V was either an idiot or messing with you.
