    What an amazing catamaran, and a very experienced builder. There are so many great features on this cat. I'm glad you're looking at an aluminium boat, they are so much more safer and it gives you more cruising grounds to choose from. It will be great fun to go along the journey with you both and watch the new build.

      @@jackchen5290 Hi Jack, The Mumby 48 design is quite an old style of boat - very much like Alba Dash that I built 20 years ago. The Portofino has very different lines and the Mumby hull has now been bought by Odisea to redesign the above waterline to modernise the appearance with Peter from Sailing into Freedom. The other significant difference is our P52 has rotating centreboard that will not get damaged if we hit the bottom but centreboards are going to either break or break the hull if you hit the bottom.

    Sweet boat, but not a serious offshore cruiser. Any boat with access to the boom and main being 15' off the water is a severe safety hazard. If you get this, please film a video of flaking the main or clearing a jam standing on top of that wedding cake in 3-meter seas and 30 knots of wind. Now island hopping in the Med on the other hand...it's perfect!

    • @barefootdoctorssailing8567
      @barefootdoctorssailing8567  Год назад +2

      HI Kirk, thanks for the comment. This boat, as I have now said many times had the features put into it by the owner, so it's their choice, and ironically they will be sailing it mainly in the Med (as you have said). However in reality there are many boats of this size and smaller with flybridges that push the boom up high and yes, the people that own them know how to put in the reefs and pack the boom bag. The boom has the be stabilised from the start and that then makes it as safe as being on the cockpit roof like all other boats and if you fall from either the first or the second floor up, you are potentially in big &%$#!
      Keep watching the next few videos where we start to go through what we want to do going forwards if we get a Portofino...

    • @kirkb3473

      @@barefootdoctorssailing8567 yes, totally understand all boats are a series of compromises, owners just need to decide which aspects are critical and which aren’t. There are no bad boat designs, there are only bad decisions made by their captain to put a boat in a situation that it wasn’t built for. Flybridges are fantastic, but not a compromise I personally would choose for a blue water boat, but you are correct that there are plenty of them out there having the time of their lives sailing the world successfully!

    Very, very nice design. Very elegant and practical. Two concerns. First, with the hull transom doors, what is being done to protect against a following wave? Watertight doors? Are the doors swinging out so that when closed, any outside wave pressure is spread around the door frame and not just absorbed by the latch/hinges? Second, how is the deck around the foresails if you have a ladder to the beach? Working the base of the foresails can be treacherous enough, holes or obstructions could make it worst.
    Galley futureproofing: Electric cooktop, oven, and grill would eliminate the need for gas on the boat. The inherent dangers and the need for refills would be eliminated. An induction cooktop and an oven with air fryer capability would reduce electrical demands and passive heat in the salon. Besides opening an entire range of cooking recipes to the chef (However, wok would not work). A folding outdoor grill enclosure capable of 550°F with a simple pizza steel would produce excellent pizzas :)
    Watermarking futureproofing: There is a revolution in watermarking worth investigating. Instead of high-pressure desalination with complex systems, filtering water from the air with fans could be promising. Most of these companies benchmark arid environments for water production. The marine environment is considerably moister. Units for RV roofs are in production. Noise may be a factor (fans).
    I would consider replacing the trampolines with a thin solid deck. Old trampolines can be dangerous requiring maintenance. It "could" be slightly heavier but that weight would balance a normally aft heavy catamaran even with engines midship ("Could" because a solid deck is geometrically, inherently stiffer thus reducing forward hull stiffing requirements due to the trampoline holes). A solid foredeck is more useful: reducing spray, catching rainwater, and providing living deck space.
    Multiple watertight compartments can be good and can be bad. A single-hull bilge area can distribute the weight of water along its entire length. The option to allow water to flow between bilge compartments with large valves could help level a boat in trouble and add additional pump capacity.
    Fewer hull ceiling hatches results in fewer weatherdeck hazards and drips. Air circulation is better achieved with well-placed intake and exhaust ports (inboard hull) and small quiet computer-like low voltage fans. Most of the time little fans pointed at you are not nearly as effective as small fans exchanging the compartment's air volume with outside air. The difference is amazing!
    Again. The reserve buoyancy above the hard chine to dampen the forward hulls from dipping (bobby) into the waves. Narrow/long wet surfaces are great but once the waves hit, above the waterline matters. The additional volume would allow a seat/pullout twin berth(s) in each large stateroom and a nice seat to put on foulies, or read a book looking out the large portlights.

    • @barefootdoctorssailing8567
      @barefootdoctorssailing8567  Год назад +1

      Thanks for the long comment again BC, many points...
      1. Yes the transom door opens outwards so any wave closes it more tightly and it won't leak. Also it is into the watertight diving room and master head / shower in case of any leakage.
      2. The drop down ladder rotates it steps so there are no holes to fall through when up.
      3. Yes we are going all electric and no gas...
      4. We have time to watch for new Waermakers developments so will wait till the last minute.
      5. Solid tramps - disagree Im afraid. Waves need to break through the tramp both on the way up and the way down so the drainage is fast and the forces are less.
      6/7 Watertight compartments and hatches and fans - natural circulation is best and does not need power. Watertight voids will keep you floating when the holes are too great for your bilge pumps to cope with
      8. By "reserve buoyancy" I presume you are talking about the shoulder above the waterline and yes you are right - this is critical for safe sailing and dramatically im[proves internal volume for livability. Agreed!
      Interesting stuff - thanks!

      @@barefootdoctorssailing8567
      3. Induction and air fryers take efficiency to the next level. You will save a lot of power.
      5. Great food for thought.
      6. Having valves still preserves the Integrity of the original watertight compartments (3 Port & 5 Starboard) but also gives the captain options when he/she needs them. Bilge pump failure for example. A waterproof dogged door between the Diving/Stowage compartment and starboard stateroom would allow bringing toys (SUP, Bikes) in the spare stateroom for occasional stowage. Guests in the starboard stateroom could experience a variation of the walk to the sugar scoop. BTW Captian Raffaele Rognoni this is genius.
      7. The efficacy of weatherdeck hatches vs. inside hull ports seems close. I do not know for sure. Both can have air scoops. The inside hull port is protected from rain and its scoop could have "dorade" like water protection. May I suggest an experiment? Get two small low-power fans like handheld personal use fans ("D" batteries). Take one fan and temporarily (ducktape :)) mount it in the forward hatch blowing in, and take the second fan and mount it in the aft hatch blowing out. It is shocking how effective this method is. It is so effective you might have to turn it off in the middle of the night because it will be too cold. It does not seem like a big deal but it really is. It is like what in the States we call a whole house fan.
      Shallow draft thoughts:
      Swinging centerboards require much more maintenance and are not as stiff as daggerboards under leeway pressure. They develop play over time. The kickup feature is important. I get it.
      Daggerboards can have a shear pin pivot. Rare but possible. I think future daggerboards will come in pairs, not just one in each hull but two in each hull back to back. Each side of the daggerboard pair will share a flat surface where they touch but the outer surface will be curved starting at the leading edge like a wing. Think of two wings together sharing the normal wing bottom surfaces but in a vertical orientation. The weather daggerboard in each hull would be deployed providing Bernoulli's lift allowing much higher pointing. You want a fast boat right. The leeward board could be dropped at the start of a tack helping to draw the cat through the wind.
      No need to reply. I know you have literally thousands watching and are very busy. I just want to help.

      @BostonClipper Год назад

      @@barefootdoctorssailing8567 Just a thought. A passive bilge keel seems much easier to tack onto an aluminum hull. It would help with the rolling that shallow draft catamarans can suffer.
      Never thought about this before. The often squared sugar scoops squander the compression pressure on the hull to propel the boat forward. See YT: Hydrodynamics and Hull Design: Linking Hull Shape to Powering 6:32
      Really weird thought. Aircraft wings sometimes have little vortex generators. I wonder if sails and hulls would someday have this counterintuitive detail.

      The sail plan seems way too high with that large flybridge raising the center of effort. I could be mistaken, but at first glance this yacht doesn't appear to be designed for performance just by looking at the hull width. It's more of a cruiser with durability in mind. It could be a fantastic boat for everything else but if it's gaining more than a knot or two average speed I'm not sure this will fit the bill without a major redesign. I'm very much looking forward to your next Video. Soon, I will also looking around for a Cat with pretty much the same features as you want, but prefer 55" (its surprising how much that last few feet make).
    Key points I want:
    Draft: 2" to maybe 2.5". Doable with the likes of the same type of rudders that the Seawind 1600 uses.
    Centerboards: Looks like this Cat uses keels not daggerboards or Centerboards. Prefered Centerboards as they offer best offer best draft & can have shear pins meaning they just pop up instead of tearing a hole in a hull if you hit something with them, but probably not viable with Center engine & shaft drive. Not sure there.
    Minimal Flybridge with dual helms atop - much more room in saloon/cockpit.
    Open plan Saloon/rear Cockpit
    Love the much wider hulls above the waterline, dont know why that does not happen more of the time (I know, it does to a point - plus weight, but still...).
    I've come to the conclusion that I want an impossible combination of a Seawind 1600 and a McConaghy MC55 but with a shaft drive and possibly in Aluminium. lol.
    Well, I guess at least with Aluminium you do have the choice of having something designed and built as a one off to your exact requirements. Only thing is, that's a risk as its an unproven design and you really dont know it if will work well or not.
    All the best with your search.

    Interesting definately want to see the deep dive...
    Al is repairable and recyclable but has a very high energy investment in its manufacture and construction given this form of construction. There is the pressure forming technique that can be used with large steel and alloy forms..this can be gradual like in a press or explosive forming.
    It reduces the amount of fabrication and hull plate welding.
    Though all manufacturers know how to control the corrosion problems onboard. Sailing Dauntless fell foul of another problem where stray currents in the water of their long term mooring devoured their new Drive legs..in months. 😬 Not common but worth considering ..some sort of detector meter/alarm on a vessel of this value.
    There's also a Swedish company that builds sport and comercial motor vessels from all Stainless steel. The advantage is lightness
    and just needs buffing to keep the hull clean of any fouling.
    Hemp flax Bamboo and Basalt are all being experimented with..
    as are new pressure and chemically treated soft wood boards that one treated are actually 5 x stronger than steel.
    It also renders it highly rot resistant.
    The barrier is testing and persuading builders to explore and adapt.
    Emel are building new monohulls using recyclable.
    resins ..
    As for the configuration we are largely on the same page ...
    The beaching ladder is a nice nod to the designs of James Wharram .. one of the fathers of the modern catamaran cruising/passage making.

    Interesting builder. Few talk about what size tender their platform/davits can handle. For an expedition boat, I want as big of a tender I can get for going long distances (and often end up returning in rough conditions). They could easily make those swimsteps 40% narrower and allow the platform to handle a longer tender. The tender doesn't have to weigh a ton with bloated interior fittings, but you need a long deep V hull for comfort. With the growing demand for high $ performance cats, you'd think they'd engineer in longer hulls aft of the cockpit so heavier tenders don't hinder performance.

    • @barefootdoctorssailing8567

      Thanks for the long comment Mark. The beauty of Alum is that you can make those sort of mods in each boat if you want... Weight would be the most significant thing to affect performance with the tenders as they are usually high out the water. Obviously the bigger the boat, the more carrying capacity and the bigger tender you can carry. Again it all comes down to each persons priorities and what you want on your boat and if that makes you lose something else...

    I’d be interested to know what aluminum alloy they are using and where? 6061 is used in many marine applications and 5052 offers high strength and corrosion resistance. I think is has a high copper alloy content. Aluminum loves oxygen so the surface of the aluminum takes on a grey non shinny metallic appearance and this is what makes it resist corrosion . You’ll have to learn a whole bunch on the care and feeding of aluminum vessels. Applying that knowledge and your boat will last and be safe as long as you 🫵want it to.
    I know a bit about the subject as I was a Captain on those 20 meter long yellow aluminum flying boats that you’ll see swooping down skimming the water to fill their tanks with 6 &3/4 tons of sea water and hauling it to a wild fire. Calleda CL-215/415 or Canadair. Most of aircraft in Med fleets are 28 to 35 years old. There have been crashes but I’m not aware of any due to structural failure.

    I don't see where aluminum is fire safe. Alu is only protected by the insulation, it burns quite well. If you really want that, build a custom boat from safety boat resins. There are polyester from rescue boats and epoxy resins used in air planes and trains. These materials will not burn at all. Rafaele is right with pure carbon fibre boats about stiffness and all related stuff but if materials are mixed pretty much all desired properties. Kevlar, glass and carbon are only the most common known ones. I do not have the English names for the others at hand now. But I'd be really delighted if someone started transforming the boat world in that direction. GRP rescue boats, trains and planes are fire safe, why not yachts... The only reason is that no one wanted to take the costs of certification for that epoxy for the boat building industry and not enough people ask for fire safe boats.

      @barefootdoctorssailing8567  Год назад +1

      Hi Andre, thanks for the comment and our feelings exactly about fire resistant resin...We actually looked at the fire resistant resins of airplanes and it was too expensive :(.
      Aluminium does not burn like our L50 does and it needs to reach a really high temp; before it will burn so it gives you time to put the fire out. GRP burns so easily the fire departments do not even bother trying to put them out and just let the boat burn to nothing as they know they will not be able to stop it.....
      Just for reference, my Aluminium Fortress anchor on our L50 that burn in 15 minutes, was one of the only things that survived and you can see it hanging out of the wreckage as the boat was lifted out. So even with that fierceness of fire, the aluminium DID NOT BURN! Interesting stuff!

    Questions:
    1. What is the dry weight per lineal foot for each boat? That's important. Danson kept the early Outremeres under 300 lbs. Not so now. Mumbies are under 300 lbs. Generally, Lerouges are under 300 lbs. Then, what do you plan to add?
    2. What is the length to width ratios on each boat size? Obviously, higher is better without compromising flotation. You cannot over-load a "performance" boat. It doesn't have enough flotation. That was a problem with some Outremeres.
