    Another really helpful tutorial on lead work, my workshop roof doesn't seem such a daunting task now... But watching a skilled roofer demonstrate and then a landscaper giving it a go is two very different things!But thanks again, even understanding the processes properly gives me more confidence.

    Why do they use lead in UK? It lasts forever? I am guessing you don't get much snow seeing as that flashing is only one course high. Curious if the building authority has approved the raised extension. That slight roof pitch and the fact it is higher than the block wall to my mind will likely mean the water will not necessarily drip down into the trough but shoot off onto the neighbours property. Please follow up with another video.

    • @BuildWithAE
      @BuildWithAE  4 года назад

      Hi Michael b,
      It's rare that we get a lot of snow in England, plus the area is well sheltered between the two buildings; so there will be very little snow on that roof.
      With regards to water in the neighbours garden; the area of the roof in which the pitch is greatest, falls beneath the coping stones, and so there is little, if any chance of water crossing the boundary. The section which is raised has such a low pitch, that the speed in which the water runs will be very slow. Because of this, and with the addition of a capillary drip section at the bottom of the roof panel, it's highly unlikely that water will breach the boundary.
      I hope this settles your concerns.
      Thanks for watching.
      All the best, John 😊

    • @puddytat62
      @puddytat62 4 года назад

      @@BuildWithAE Must have missed the episode with the capillary edge. I've seen some YT horror stories about how some Londoners are digging down multiple levels in order to get every mm of space out of their property. Blocking streets and exposing neighbours to water damage in their efforts to build down not up so it is fascinating to see the extreme lengths people go to in order to maximize their living space inside and out. This reno seems well designed to offer more space without compromising the adjoining neighbour's property.

    • @BuildWithAE
      @BuildWithAE  4 года назад

      Hi Kristoffer Uutinen,
      Lead has been used in roofing for centuries, and research has shown that the main negative impact is on the person installing it. It has very little, if any environmental impact. However, I can understand why a country would choose to ban it, as it is a potentially harmful material, but it is totally legal and acceptable to use in the UK.

    • @BuildWithAE

      Hi P Cass,
      We used rubber in the gutter, which doesn't bond very well to brick. So the rubber was lapped up the timber wall plate, and then the lead was dressed over the top to form a watertight seal.
      I hope this helps.

      Hi Chris,
      Providing that you use a sufficient amount of lead clips, and the pointing up is done correctly, there is no reason why a mortar mix cannot be used. It also provides a more aesthetically pleasing finish than lead seal.

      Hi Anthony worthington,
      We had another design in mind for the guttering at the time, otherwise we would of 😁.
      Thanks for watching.

      Hi Graham,
      We installed gutter hedgehogs along the whole gutter. These help to prevent debris blocking them and can be easily removed for cleaning.
      Hope this helps.
      All the best, John 😊

    Great workmanship, it's shame that all of the cowboy builders out there give the building trades a bad name

    Take the coping stones off take the rubber on to the brick re bed the coping stones. No awkward rubber work no awkward lead work. Very neat though but unnecessary.
