  • Today we had an unexpected visitor to the workshop, the 1974 Bolens HT20. Dad moved the tractor and while it was warming up it stalled. He was distracted and forgot to turn the ignition off which burned out the coil. Today we investigate why it stalled and replace the coil. It looks like it stalled due to a fuel issue.

    That tractor seems to run well, Joseph. I got a car running once with a dead battery. I planned to let it run for about 10 minutes to charge the battery. I forgot about it. It idled for about 4 hours. Fortunately, there was no damage! Thanks for sharing. - Rick

    Hi Joseph, I had no idea that leaving the key on would do that. Adding the primer bulb was pretty smart! You're doing a great job with these videos!

      Thanks for the kind words. We copied the primer bulb idea from a friend and it works really well on these tractors as the fuel pump is higher than the fuel tank. Take care

      Thanks. The primer works well to keep the load off the starter motor. We now have the LED lights on 2 tractors and it makes a large improvement. Take care

    Never seen 1 of those priming bulbs before...that could come in handy at times, gotta remember that

    • @GardenTractorBoy
      @GardenTractorBoy  2 года назад

      On that tractor the fuel pump is above the tank outlet, so having the primer stops the starter motor from having to turn the engine over so much before the fuel gets through. With the primer bulb the tractor starts first time.Take care

    I learned something, I didn't know that leaving the key on would burn up the coil on these tractors, I know with the older cars with points, if you left the ignition in the on position and the points happened to be closed it would most likely burn the points and possibly burn the coil as well.

    • @GardenTractorBoy
      @GardenTractorBoy  2 года назад

      I am unsure if the points were open or closed. In our experience, the coils on these Kohler twins are a bit fragile anyway. I think we have replaced the coil at least once in all our Kohler twins now. Take care

    I bet the check valve stuck on the primer bulb. As for the coil issue, My Roper uses a points and coil set up also. I added a small switch on the coil wire mainly to prevent theft while at Shows. This would also work to prevent coil melt downs. Down side, I often forget to turn the switch on. My Craftsman's use magnetos so leaving the key on doesn't affect them. Always nice to have spare parts.

    • @GardenTractorBoy
      @GardenTractorBoy  2 года назад +1

      Thanks, you're probably right with the check valve. We have watched your video about the small switch, seems like a good idea. Take care

    How's she goin'? Nice repairs here Joseph. Nice explanation too of what was going on. The primer bulb must have been stopped up somehow eh!!! I wouldn't be too hard on Dad though, after all he did have the spare parts needed for fixing the coil and primer. Dad's are pretty handy to have around you know!!! And your Mom will know there are marks on the lawn even in the dark. Don't ask me how I know, Mom's just know things like that!!! Thanks for sharing and take care!!

      Thanks. Sometimes it can takes weeks to get parts, so not having spare parts would mean that our winter plans for this tractor would be delayed. Take care
