  • From NEVERKUSEN to NEVERLUZEN: How XABI ALONSO made BAYER LEVERKUSEN UNSTOPPABLE!
Xabi Alonso's Bayer writes a new history! Why was the club called Neverkusen? How long did it take them to build a title-winning squad capable of crushing Bayern Munich? And what eternal record can Alonso's team break after winning the first Bundesliga trophy in 120 years?
We've decided to gather the most interesting facts about the current Bayer that you probably didn't know! Hit the like button, subscribe and let's get into it!
What do you need to know about Leverkusen?
Leverkusen is located in western Germany in North Rhine-Westphalia. The city has a population of approximately 165 thousand inhabitants. Back in 1861, the German chemist Carl Leverkus chose this city to build a dye factory, and later on, Bayer AG, a pharmaceutical company, moved there too, gradually bringing in more and more of its workers. Since then, Leverkusen has become a center of the chemical industry.
At present, however, the whole city is also passionate about football and is primarily associated with the local club Bayer Leverkusen, which has been logically nicknamed ''The Company's Eleven." After the team's long-awaited Bundesliga triumph, the streets of Leverkusen were full of celebrations and the die-hard fans even renamed the street leading to the BayArena stadium in honor of head coach Xabi Alonso!
However, fate has not always been kind to Bayer. You see, the club has had its share of pain once...
    Why was Bayer called Neverkusen?
In the 2001/2002 season, Bayer Leverkusen had such legends in its ranks as Hans-Jörg Butt, Lucio, Ze Roberto, Michael Ballack and Dimitar Berbatov. Leverkusen attempted to secure the treble by capturing the Bundesliga, German Cup and Champions League, but as a result, the team fell one point behind champions Borussia Dortmund, lost to Real Madrid 2-1 in the UCL final and was defeated by Schalke 4-2 in the Cup final...
Since then, the club has been dubbed "Neverkusen," indicating that the Black and Reds will never ever be able to lift a trophy again.
More than 20 years later, however, Bayer are proving the opposite! With a league title in their pocket, another DFB Pokal final on the horizon, and still in the race for Europa League gold, their second trip to the treble has every chance to be successful!
How much does Bayer's title-winning squad cost?
Of course, this season's incredible progress is built primarily by the footballers and the manager. Bayer's title-winning squad was built slowly, but very thoroughly. It all started in the summer of 2020, when the Black and Reds sold Kai Havertz to Chelsea for €80 million. With this money, they decided to rather invest in young "raw" players from the "second tier" leagues, who were supposed to grow into superstars in the future.
Bayer got defender Edmond Tapsoba from Portugal for €20 million, right-back Jeremie Frimpong from the Scottish Premiership side Celtic for €11 million, defensive midfielder Exequiel Palacios from Argentina for €17 million, and attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz from Köln's youth team for €200,000 at the time! These guys became regulars and laid the foundation for the championship run, although Bayer spent a total of €48 million on them, a little more than half of what Havertz's departure brought.
Press the like button if you also think of it as an example of a brilliant transfer policy!
In October 2022, the club appointed Xabi Alonso to replace the sacked Gerardo Seoane, with whom the team even managed to compete for survival in the German top-tier! Alonso quickly elevated Bayer from 16th to 6th place in the Bundesliga and unexpectedly reached the Europa League semi-finals, gaining a lot of trust for the transfer window!
In the summer of 2023, the Spanish coach requested Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka for €15 million, striker Victor Boniface from Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise, who cost Bayer €20.5 million, Borussia Mönchengladbach winger Jonas Hofmann who cost €10 million, and Southampton winger Nathan Tella, who was signed for €23.3 million. Besides, Alejandro Grimaldo from Benfica was also recruited as a free agent.
€68 million for five players and a total of €116 million was spent by Bayer in order to build an almost entirely new starting lineup that won the Bundesliga, and even that was compensated by the sale of Moussa Diaby to Aston Villa for €50 million!
Today, the market value of Leverkusen's full squad is €594.55 million, while Bayern Munich's lineup is valued at €949 million! Imagine how much Bayer will earn by offloading their leaders in the next transfer window. In fact, all of the Premier League's giants are lined up to get Frimpong, Tapsoba, Grimaldo, Palacios and Boniface, while Barcelona and Bayern are already rubbing their hands with pleasure thinking about Wirz!
