  • Did you know that the last Sri Lankan king was a Nayak prince from Tamil Nadu? He died a prisoner at the Vellore Fort in Tamil Nadu. How did the Nayaks of Tamil Nadu establish their rule over the Kingdom of Kandy in Sri Lanka?

It's important to emphasize that the king was not "from" Tamil Nadu. He, as with others in his lineage going back a few generations, were born in Sri Lanka. He was "from" Sri Lanka. His heritage, of course, was from Tamil Nadu. Sinhala and Tamil were spoken at the courts. The Nayaks of Kandy also supported Buddhism, perhaps in order to maintain the support of the people. There's a good book about this by John Holt called "The Religious World of Kirti Sri: Buddhist, Art, and Politics of Late Medieval Sri Lanka" (which was not about the last king). I say this because there are ethnonationalists on both sides (Sinhala and Tamil) and it's important to realize that identities are complicated and cannot be so easily reduced to being "from" a place where you were not actually born and did not grow up. Love this video and channel though, thanks.

The Nayak rulers played a huge role in reviving Buddhism in the island. They spoke Telugu and Tamil, and used Tamil as the court language in Kandy alongside Sinhala. Sri Vikrama Rajasinha was born in Madurai in 1780

As a Sri Lankan the last 4 kings of Sri Lanka were Telugu not Tamil. They were called wadiga in Sinhala. Wadiga rata (Telugu country) was the ancient term used in Sinhala exclusively for the land of Telugu people .

What does it matter how many languages he could speak? He was what his ancestors were, which was Telugu. Is it so difficult to identify him as belonging to a lineage of Telugu rulers who ruled major portions of Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka during this period?
