That pvc pipe was genius you just solved my entire water run off issue!! And thanks for the help on the gutter!
I love his professionalism to described the job.I learned many things such as installing shingles etc. Well-done, great video, Thanks.....
Tom, you ALWAYS make these projects look SOOOO EZ! Many thanks. p.s . I especially appreciate your tip about ice dams missing the gutter. Tool Kool!!
I absolutely love this stuff. But can't help but laugh every time they say "now it's time for the..." inevitable tool and materials I don't have 😂😂
"next thing we do is dig a trench" got that lady digging at the end had me dying XD
Yea she set herself up for that one by asking where the water's gonna go. Dude's a genius.
Lol
Short. Concise. To the point informative.
Best explanation I have seen for aluminum gutters
Thank you for teaching me to do my own gutter wk. Keep all your trades & tricks always coming. Save us a LOT of money and showing our PRIDE in our homes.
This was EXCELLENT information. I have a short section of gutter to mount tomorrow and I just needed this exact info.
This is a great video - no waffling but gives all the essentials in a jiffy - whilst demonstrating it properly too. Excellent!
I love your video quality something to work towards on my Gutter DIY channel. Love this channel, great inspiration👍
That straight edge tip will save me! I installed vinyl gutters a few years back and they filled with snow and ice.
Tom Silva is a brilliant dude. Thanks for the video. Just one thing -- would be good to add a valley splash block because water will reach a high volume and velocity and can shoot over that valley corner.
Nothing beats looking for info on how to do something and you click on it and it's Tommy from TOH. That dud knows his shit.
At 3:00 you knew the bottom of the fascia board was level but in my case it certainly was not. I used a string tied from one side to the other to establish a proper slope and bolted each section of the hangers according to that string.
Brilliant, I can reuse my existing PVC downspout and replace just the PVC eavestrough with aluminum, never thought of that, thanks!!
I grew up in Detroit. I referred to it as an evestrough and people didn’t know what I meant when I moved to the South.
I love ask this old house! wish I had my own Tom Silva!!!
its actually crazy how much you can safe doing this yourself. To do 30 ft, it cost me maybe $75? I do have some tools already though. But man, this is basically all labour as the parts are dirt cheap.
Exactly, just did this yesterday and the total was 92 bucks at Lowe's. I had to get a rivet gun though.
@Sage Brush lmao
Men, that's so cool , thank you!!!
2:28 He a brave dude with her on one end bout to turn that rig into a teeter totter.
nice big hiney on her lol
On steep pitch ( or ANY pitch ) end of valley, where corner miter is located...add a diverter to upper radius of gutter FORWARD lip. It blocks flow OVER the front of gutter, concentrated from valley above. Four or five inches in each direction, four inches high. Paint to match, fab from aluminum coil stock.
Confused can you explain what that is. We have just like that inside corner. Down spout ges into Bush area then blocked by a side walk.
awesome ! thanks this old house
3 ways to do it Mark....they sell wedges....that u can install.......you can use 1 1/2 " Jay Channel and fasten it to the back side of the gutter....or install wood cut with a reverse angle to bring the wood back to flat.
Love Canada Merci ❤
Beautiful House
4:23 dang, dude didn't have to do her like THAT!
Hahahaha
Thank you for posting this video on how to install gutters. This video has lots of good information. I appreciate it.
Those are good strong hangers.
Love this guy! RIP
Thanks for the DIY instructions. But I typically install gutters below the drip edge when possible. But then again, about 2/3rds of the homes here don't have drip edge flashing installed!!!
I love to see folks wanting to try to do stuff they're not used to.
Gutter should go behind dripedge or rain will Ron behind the gutter
Tommy is a true master.
OSHA would approve 👍
What about the old holes from the old gutters? You can’t leave them. That must be sealed.
No they don’t
Thank you!
Excellent video😀
That’s the whole point
I wonder if they are in Boston, (Baughston).
Yes
What type of sealant would you recommend. I dont liike that silver seam mate that they sell at home depot.
you have to put the gutter behind the eve metal or water will leak behind it !
I have an out-building where they left the rafter tails exposed. What should I put up to support gutters? I'm not having any luck finding gutter videos that don't use finished buildings.
I live in an apartment, why did I watch this.....
boredom.
kugmyster: For when you own your own home :-)

To better yourself through education partner.
I own a flat roof house with no gutters, why did I watch this.....
Cool video, thanks for sharing.
The level idea was awesome but I didn't see the drip edge installation?
I like the drain pipe idea. I would have to go under a sidewalk. Does the water just sit in the pipe until the next rain pushes it out by gravity, or would it be wise to put some small holes near the end so water can leech out?
I was thinking about freezing issues here in Indiana.
Best video
TOH is using an Alcoa hooked back style. Most places only sell straight back gutters. Hmm choices! I'm guessing that the Alcoa's are better.
I have a home 2 story w no rake boards. Roof simply overhangs the sofets. What do you recommend?
hey tom what about the Ice/snow/rain that will go between the back of the gutter and the Fascia? stripflashing or a bead of OSI caulking I suggest on your next job lol
...if you show up with a tube of OSI and try to caulk the back of the gutter I'll throw you the f**k off the roof!
Did you screw the outlet on the outside of the gutter?
this is good making, i need you help, how can i determine the length of downspout.
Can gutters hang on pvc rake/fascia boards or better with wood wrapped in metal? One guy told me the weight of gutters pulls loose from pvc. Unlike wood with metal wrap. Is this BS?
How much drop should you put on 70’ ? 1/2” ?
this video tickles me in ways only fools can tickle me
Lol...need to go to Texas and see how we do it..... Little different
Fellow DIYers,
A couple of comments and hints. First, Lowes sells aluminum gutters while Home Depot sells steel gutters, at lease that's true here in Tucson. You want STEEL gutters, not aluminum. They are stronger, hold their shape better, and are no more difficult to work with then aluminum. Yes, they cost a bit more but worth it. Then the 5" hidden brackets seemed too large by 1/2" but when you screw them in, you compress then 1/2" and they end up exactly the right size (don't get carried away with the screw or you'll deform the bracket). Then, in our case, the fascia board was at a slight angle and if we just installed the gutters tight to the fascia, then they would be at an angle, which looked funny and probably affected the operation of the gutter itself. We experimented with various kinds of shims and found that the Everbilt Doorstop, SKU 187-281 sold by Home Depot was exactly the right shim and at 75 cents each, an easy solution. The fascia-fixers sold by Home Depot did not work for our application. You can put a small nail through them to hold them in place and, of course, very near the screw location on the hidden bracket. Then it was suggested on another posting to not use a downspout assembly, rather, cut a hole in the gutter where you want the water to exit the gutter and using snips, make it the right size for a gutter outlet drop (2"x3" for our application) and this was good advice. (This is similar to what was done in this video.) We used the proper gutter sealant to hold the outlet drop in place and then let it sit overnight before adding the rest. Last hint, crimp the edges of the end caps (with sealant) once they are in place. Of course, sealant in the inside around the edges as well. Our overall cost was about $9 a foot total. Figure $10 a foot to be safe.
Love,
Andre
+andretchaikowskycom Steel rusts, aluminum doesn't. Aluminum gutters can last forever (as long as you install the heavier gauge, maintain them, don't have ice dams, don't spam them with ladders, use all aluminum hardware (u'll get galvanic corrosion with steel), etc) Yes technically steel gutters can last forever, but meh, don't like dealing with rust...
+andretchaikowskycom So go to Lowes, moron?
Andre, RUST NEVER SLEEPS. 5 inch gutter is FLIMSY. 6 inch gutter is STOUT.Door stops are BRILLIANT ! I do custom homes in SC, along the coast, and angled fascia is common, so ADJUSTABLE hangers are also common and EXPENSIVE. For historical LOOK, we cut wedges to match fascia angle, and gutter mounts PLUMB with them behind, and painted. Cutting downspout DROP opening with snips to MATCH drop being used (2x3, 4x6 for 6 inch gutter) reduces restriction AT drop, and helps prevent clogs. Mounting fixture (drop) OUTSIDE gutter does the same. Downspout elbow edges cover drop anyway, and easier to mount drop from outside gutter. I do ALOT of gutter in the rain, so sealant that cures while WET is a good choice, and never leaks due to HEAT. This shown job (IF 5 inch gutter) is a 3 dollar a foot deal, plus downspout...10 bucks. So she's @ 110 bucks. SHE dug ditch / drain to . . . I install copper gutter, with adjustable brackets (every 3 feet... it's hearty stuff @ 12 a hanger, and 25 a foot for gutter) 30 feet up off landscaping. For ten bucks a foot, I could fly to Phoenix. And then taxi to Tucson ... sister in Prescott, has great "rainwater control system" (I installed a decade ago), and yet, low average rainfall to worry. She saves every drop.
You're from Tuscon AZ. I can't imagine it rains all that much there. Steel is great for your location but not other places where rain happens frequently

it definitely sounded like he said "garter" after just about 2:50
Did anyone else notice the round downspout outlet for a rectangular downspout??
At 2:20 what do they have the gutter hooked on?
My rusted out gutters are held together with tape and sealant...guess it's time to change them out. :/
I wonder what the load rating for that ladder is? Baby got back
It is very unusual custom in my country for women helping menfolk to repair the house
LMAO!
I sometimes think so
I sometimes think so
You live in the Middle East or what?
Robert Dennis too funny!
Other than learning a few tips and tricks, this Old House is simply an entertainment show. Your average DIY knows they didn't cover all aspects for completing a job correctly and still looking for answers and your novice completely effing up their project.
Make sure when you install your gutter Low enough like this all the water runs over the gutter on a nice rain 😂
How do you flex a downspout?
How do you install gutters with no fascia?
Tail hanger under the shingles
@@anthonydemir2540 What if there's no shingles?
Strap hangers they drill right into the roof
Or into the rapture tales
I know the gutter will hlep but When it's raining won't the water still hit the house
The only obvious mistake here is that the icefall test needs to be done at the highest point of the pitch of where the gutter will be not the lowest point of the picture where the gutter will be cuz what you effectively just did was raise the pitch up into the shear line
Wrong. Watch again. He did the icefall test at the highest point.
How come all diy gutters are k style, but many most construction or contractors have/use non-K profile
Thank you. Nice video, but I couldn't find that crimping tool. It would be nice to have, if I could find one.
Google is your friend. so is amazon and ebay.
Thanks for the video. I'm trying to install gutters on my house, but the fascia board is not straight vertical. It looks like the builder left the rafter ends square so that the fascia board is sloped inward at the bottom. Do you have any ideas how I can get a straight vertical surface to attach the gutter brackets to?
You need to by gutter wedges or use OG 13 roof rods. Good luck!
no drip edge/flashing? why not?
So I find the corner redundant, it should fit OVER the gutter work, not under. Since the gutter will be at a pitch, the water can't sit on the sealer.
The box miter is designed to go under the gutter, it's actually 1/16" bigger than the gutter itself.
Properly back caulked and sealed, it will never leak.
If you don't like it then miter the corners of the gutter and do away with the box miter altogether. But you need to know what you're doing if you plan on mitering the corners of the gutter.
I don't know where you guys are from or who taught you all how to do gutter but I have been in the gutter business for over 30 years and I have never seen anyone put together gutter the way that you just got done doing it.....first off you do not put the box miter on first before you hang the gutter.... Second you don't run a bead of cock on the inside seam of the end cap... You place the end cap on first and then run a bead of sealant around the inside edge of The gutter and the end cap... If you put that sealant inside the seam of the end cap and then slide the end cap on and squeeze it with those crimpers it will ooze the sealant out all over the gutter...
I have never seen someone use the level the way you did to set the gutter... Gutters are meant to be placed up underneath the drip edge. If you place gutters on the way you just showed by using your level down to the front of the gutter then common Sense tells you that if water is rushing off that roof it is going to blast right over the front of your gutter and the gutter is not going to catch it... All in all you need to go back to gutter installation School and re-edit this video and quit teaching people to hang their gutters improperly
Yeah this guy is doing gutters so weirdly
Secret to cleaning gutters the easy way - proper ladder assembly! 0:06
or get on the roof lol
or gutter guards
Liverpool
Liverpool
gutter guards ugly af
Half round gutter with outside hangers much better.
A K gutter handles more water volume than a half-round gutter.
Half-round also cost twice as much too!
Don't purchase Leaffilter gutter protection from LEAFFILTER NORTH because they do clog on top of the filter which is not covered by the warranty
Oh my god what a shitload of work!
Patrick Bateman Well. you could pay home depot $4,600 instead, that's including gutter guards. Just think of all the tools you could buy with the money you save :-}
Patrick Bateman Easier than returning some videotapes
Great video, definitely made it look easy.
Only one suggestion: inside corner could really use flashing, designed to keep the water from over shooting the gutter during a heavy rain. Good tutorial otherwise.
Gutter King of Twin Cities, LLC great video? Fucking horrible video! I instal for Gutterking of WNY and you always use water to pitch a gutter, and those hangers are weak as shit!

I can easily name at least 10 things they did wrong LOL
I wish Tom Silva was my neighbor......
With Norm on the other side.
tha wata needs ta run to tha cawna
lol
Average homeowner will take a week to figure this out no guarantees. come out right
a good idea is to wear a pair of gloves in all projects especially when working with aluminum as its edges can be very sharp especially after they have been cut
I want to know how Tom got Legs-A-Plenty up on the ladder with him?
nerde iş güvenliği bunların mesleki yeterlilik belgesi varmı?😆
hey its Martha Stewart !
do you have website or contact information????????????
this is a famous TV show - google it
DIY is OK for short runs, but long runs (usually over 10 ft. runs) is best left to the pros who can do it seamless.
And one point not about gutters. That working platform is way too high for no railing. One bad step and someone is hurt. Maybe badly.
Or I can just hire someone to do this for me! 💡
Where can I pahk my cah?
Who came from DubstepGutter?
I guess it's good thing that professionalism isn't a contractors #1 sales point, what with 75% of every install video being filled with trash talk... You do realize that it only sends people running away from you and to DIY, right? That you're losing money for everyone who does a good enough job and don't call for repairs? Probably not. This video is bad but if you can't help then at least stop shooting each others in the foot.
Sorry to say I would not recommend this installation video. This is why we started making videos for DIY'er's(Do It Yourself). Would you like to really learn how to complete an installation professionally? then check out our channel:)
This is crazy.... if anyone needs 5in gutter I have a gutter machine I install new
24" 5/8 not 24" 1/2
Also that wasn't a half inch pitch more like a sixteenth
