I have done a number of amateur fixes to my home since I retired. Jeff, I always seem to end up with one of your videos. You are like a helpful neighbour who gives me some how-to advices and assures me that I can do the job myself. Thank you!
Great Video!!! One issue that I encountered when I installed my rain gutter system that provided water for my 10 rain barrel watering system I made, was that the screws used to hold the elbow to the gutter and down spout managed to catch a lot of leaves on the tips of the screws, causing them to clog up. Having very large Oak trees (75' tall) around the house forced me to clean the down spouts out every few months. I finally decided to replace the screws with aluminum rivets. I have not had to climb the ladder to clean the down spout opening since then. OK, I still needed to clean the gutters in the Fall and Spring yet, but not for the down spouts. Just a thought. The rivets are still doing fine 18 years later.
As someone who has been using all kinds of things as a work-surface during my house-build (including uninstalled cabinetry, loose concrete blocks, a bathtub, toilet box, sketchy sawhorses), I must say that I appreciate you stepping things up and using a nice-looking fire feature!
i'd love to see a basic maintenance video! like 5 minutes a pop on central ac filters, cleaning gutters, flushing a hot water heater and cleaning the pole thing in it, and other various things that homeowners should be doing. i'd imagine it would get a ton of lifetime views too
I’m a handy auto mechanic, but this is one of those projects I’d rather just pay a company to do correctly in a day (while I’m at work) vs me wasting a whole weekend and still not getting it done right. Great video nonetheless! Knowledge is priceless.
Apparently you have better access to skilled labor. Where I live, if you pay someone to do this job, you end up having to undo their work and fix all the damage. Then you have to do the work, so it doesn't get you ahead. It's always a dream just to hire stuff done, but not likely around here.
The idea with this is that it's not difficult. There's really nothing to get wrong other than not slopping enough (or in the correct direction) and not sealing enough. If a person can't tilt and glue, well, that's a different conversation. As he stated, the biggest difference with a DIY and professional finish is that professional install has the ability to install seamless gutters. Seamless gutters are good for aesthetics and for less chance of a leak, but overall, it's not overwhelmingly better and can cost a lot more. Even if a DIY job requires resealing, it's not difficult at all.
@@michaele8896 That's exactly the problem I had in my little city. A lot of bootleg "Contractors" and "handymen". So many horrendous jobs done by these so called professionals that I have to fix myself. I've decided to do my own whole home reno. I've learned so much here that I may tackle a whole bathroom remodel next year.
@@joseph7105 1 year later and I tend to agree with you and all the other comments, but am still confident in my choices. I’ve had gutters, windows and doors, a roof, a garage door with opener, and a new hvac ac/heat pump system put into my living in fixer upper all by qualified companies through the BBB. 3 out of the 5 jobs were subcontracted out to no name guys in unmarked white vans. Most of the subcontracted work left a little to be desired and I will definitely be more picky from now on. I often wonder if they subcontracted it because my house is not a “model” home ala one they could take pictures of before and after to proudly present on their website. One of the roofers dented in my new gutters and they left nails everywhere. The window and door work was pretty abysmal. It has saved me a ton on electric but the trim work was horrible for what I paid. But really, I can’t complain. I don’t have the time to do these repairs by myself. Can I be without a front door for 2-3 weeks once I rip the old one out? Sometimes it’s cheaper in the long run to pay a crew to complete it in a day vs spending countless weekends lost to unproductive work I don’t have the tools or experience for. Yet everybody thinks they are a mechanic….
Glad to see some ladder safety covered. I shattered my tibia and fibula in January of 20' when the ladder slid out from under me, and it's been a bear ever since. I would have much preferred never to have broken it in the first place!
Thank you! You did the work the way most of my projects go - more times up&dawn the ladder, start & restart the work, more than one trip to the hardware store…. LOL! On a more serious note, good suggestions with the ladder safety. Thanks again!
Great video! I've been intimated by gutters even though I did a major reno on the roof deck/fascia/shingling a hip roof and adding a ridge and soffit vents lol. 13:15 one cool tip is the colors of the aviation snip handles matter. Yellow is straight, red is right curved I think and green is left curved. Then you also have the angle of the cutting tool itself like your red ones have.
Was on my way to Home Depot to buy eaves trough for a single run along the side of the garage (basically as you demonstrated), but considered watching a RUclips first, and there you were! You taught me how to do drywall mud and now I am better equipped to hang some eaves trough. FYI glad I did watch as changing materials from vinyl to aluminium as the 'hangers' for vinyl will not work with 6" metal facia. A bit more technical with the metal snips, but those hangers appear to be a snap. Thank you once again!
Great video this is all about do it yourself obviously the professional installer don't like this because it affects their money in pocket so do it yourselfer go for it good job

Then I look at your channel and boom you’ve uploaded just what I need. Thanks for the hard work and information you put out there for everyone!
Always use a level to make sure it’s pitched right the building can be tipping the other way and the gutters always go under the drip edge water is going to be leaking behind the gutters the way he did them
Thank you for the video Jeff. I just wish you had covered more how you put the 2 long pieces together up there, do you use connectors, do you just overlap them, do you screw them together, how you seal them together, etc, as that is usually the hardest part when installing the gutter and usually the weakest point to leak water. Thank you!! Keep it up!!
And where to attach them when you have drip edge over a 1 x 2 on the top end of the fascia. I have contractors telling me you attach by screwing into the drip edge (gutter under drip edge) and some telling me it attaches under the 1 x 2 -never screw into the drip edge (gutter still under drip edge).
You should overlap them at least a few inches, use sealant in between and best way is to use aluminum rivets but you can use screws. But the absolute best way is to get it made in one piece cause eventually it will leak from the joint when it expands and contracts enough and the sealant will deteriorate, with one piece you will never have a joint leak ever.
For the end caps not sure if your already informed by this but i work for a gutter company and for the end caps insides of using some screws to keep it on we use some Hand held Crimpers and crimp all around and then caulk the inside
The most reassuring part of the video. . . knowing that my 3 trips to the big box depot makes me an amateur and the pros still have to go twice! Thanks for the info and the video. Cheers!
Good video. I've done a few gutters before but learn something every time I see one of your videos. I would recommend you add a "Kickout Flashing" where the gutter meets the upper wall. There is a gap between the gutter and the wall there. It is common for water to run down the wall flashing and get behind the siding. When I purchased my house the rim joist and floor had rotted so the patio doors didn't close properly. Likewise the sheathing had rotted away above the door and a frog was living in there. The "Kickout Diverter" made a big difference.
I've been watching a ton of your videos and as this is a job I need to tackle in the spring (the ones that we inherited are split) this couldn't have came at a more perfect time. Even though I'm decently seasoned in reno you always have tips, tricks and ways that make everything seem less intimidating. And you instill confidence. Cheers man. The content is awesome as ever.
I used the same straps on my downspout but I attached them differently. I put the strap on top of the downspout with one screw in the middle. Then I bent the wings and screwed it down on both sides to staple it down. The other things I did different was I used unions on the seams but your idea seems faster. Where I bought the gutters they only had a nail system to hang it but your system it seems way better. Also, I attached mine under the drip edge to prevent leaks on the back side. The hardest thing for me was finding the right caulking nothing I saw was labeled specifically for gutters or direct sunlight.

All jokes aside, great content, explained by a regular dude, silly stuff included that you would experience. “Boy I wish I had a marker! Haha”
This doesn't make sense to me Jeff... @16:54 Down spout is going "over top" of the plastic... That would leave a chance to have some water go outside over the plastic. I purchase plastic fittings where the downspout goes "Inside" the plastic fitting so there is NO chance of water going outside the system...
Noticed that as well. Whatever is being attached (going with gravity) should be on the outside of the previous piece, otherwise water can get around the seam. I can't be sure but it looked like that might have been an adapter on top meant for the smaller sized downspout. If so, all he has to do is remove the adapter and slide the downspout into it.
I believe he put this part in upside down. If you look closely when he's carrying the piece over to the back of the house, it looks like one end comes pre-tapered. That end should've gone into the flexible bottom piece, not the other way around. Still a great video.
sorry if that bothers you. the product was not designed to sit on the outside so it is what it is. on the bright side it does take 95% of the water 4' from the foundation. this is more about water management and less about perfection. I personally love the drain system that allows the installation of pea gravel on top of the drain vs having a spout just hanging there waiting to be knocked off by the wind and ice in the winter time. Cheers I gave a little to gain a lot.

Always appreciate watching your videos wish you could see my set up over here you'd get a quite a laugh out of it. I had a guy put aluminum gutters on the roof edge but for some reason he never did the down pipes. So I recently tried to do the down pipes myself. but I didn't put the s-curve at the top. I don't have a proper ladder. I have a drill and brackets but I haven't been able to drill holes into the side of the house, for some reason. So instead of the s-curve at the top I just have the pipe coming straight down. it's not exactly straight because the horizontal gutter is not quite flat, so it's actually coming sort of back towards the house at an angle. Then at the bottom of the pipe I have it sitting on some tile and stuff that I salvaged. So I put an elbow there at the bottom. And the remaining part of the pipe I run out to the street. I might try to do a better job of so it will be more secure in case of high winds or hooligans. Stay off my lawn! Because right now basically all I have holding it in place is the stuff at the very bottom under the elbow. With about 15 ft of pipe above it. But for now it seems to be holding.
I wish he had mentioned this as well. Also how to create the crimps with home tools to get the fit. Bought a house and the fit the down spots wrong and it's ruined the siding, had to figure out how to fix it
Amazing video, thank you very much! I'm a new homeowner as of September 2021 and my 1-car detached garage does not have any rain gutters so I need to get some up... I was even thinking about funneling the water from the downspout into barrels and using that stored water for watering my lawn and mini garden.... right now the water falling from the roof of the garage is creating channels in my lawn and flooding low spots which are about 1ft off the garage QUESTION: how would I fasten straps for the downspout to Stucco? Just drill it in?
Love your videos, has helped me a ton in just my first 6 months of homeownership. I bought an old house with plaster walls. You have a massive library of drywall videos but I can't seem to find any for working with plaster. Any tips?? Thanks!
Am a recent subscriber so went to you first with my little DIY gutter question. I have about 2 feet from the gutter downspout to the side of the house. The contractor who did the shingles purchased some the gutter supplies. I decided to do the gutter myself. He purchased 3 elbows. I needed 2 and an extension between the two. The very last part of your installation that you skipped was my question. No matter. Not rocket science. Lowe's does sell the extender. Tomorrow I hopefully finish this little project ... little, but not an easy height ... about 30'. Not fond of heights so I did pay attention to your ladder positioning advice.
This is perfect, getting ready to close on a house and should everything go okay, the first thing I need to do on the house is replace the gutters cause they're all old and messed up.
Great video, i did a few mistakes, in a hurry i wanted to.find how to integrate as as i had 30' to do but i ended up using the connectors, on the first edge, i put it 1" on the inside instead of outside, no big deal
I just called to have someone come out and do my gutters and then I thought, you know, I should see how difficult this is before I have them come out. I'll probably get a bid, but now I have the confidence to tell them no if the quote seems unreasonable. If I do it, I'll probably use a level though. Eyeballing things to save 60 seconds has led me to more work than I want to admit.
Great video, thanks. How much would be to install per linear feet if possible in the US, big city, average cost, in a house like the one in the video? It can be found a huge price margin from a handyman to a bigger contractor. And very often seen here that more expensive doesn't necessarily guarantees better quality. Thanks for help.
Nice video. It would be helpful to show the viewers how to find the correct angle for the ladder….put each of your feet on top of each ladder foot and extend your arms forward parallel to the ground, adjust ladder position to reach the rung of the ladder then you have the proper angle for the ladder. Always maintain 3 points of contact with the ladder and do not take your foot the ladder rung as done at 9:52 and don’t lean to a side when on a ladder. Never put screws in your mouth, especially on a ladder.
Not having drip edges overlapping the back edge of the gutters caused me all sorts of grief. The rain coming off the shingles curled back and got between the gutter and fascia boards, causing rot and providing water to termites!
Love your content. Question I have, which is off topic - what rock is that you are using along the house and fence? We want to do away with mulch and use rock.
This is very fortunate timing as I will be starting some gutter work in the new year. But I need some further advice, please. 0:46 What is "this" attachment called and where can they be purchase. Thanks
I know this video has nothing to do with my up coming question but I am hoping you get the chance to read this question I have for you. Jeff, I have house that was built in the 60s that has hardwood floors in them. Through out the house when I walk the floor creaks. I was wondering if there is a way to stop that without ripping out the hardwood floor to get to the subfloor to screw down the boards? I would really appreciate your help that way I don’t get myself into anything I shouldn’t have to. Thank you for your time.
Jeff! Can you use something like a hole saw drill bit to cut the hole for a down spout or will the material the eaves trough is made of not stand up to it? Thanks for the video!
Tx fort all the videos. Can I hang my gutter on a 1 3/4 inch facia? Or with do I do with my tiny 1 3/4 facia? Do I need to reinforce it? (24 F.L. gutter)
I’m planning on adding eavestroughs to my 14 foot shed in the spring to collect rain water for the garden. There is no soffit or fascia, the shingles hang over the siding just about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch. Do you think I could get away with just screwing the trough right into the siding and the plywood under it?
9:53 how many points of contact on that ladder. lol just busting your ball bearings, i love your channel and i have done a ton of carnival acts on a ladder as well.
You could always go to your local gutter contractor store/place of business and have them cut out specific lengths of gutter for you and you can transport them. Be sure nothing is over 20 feet or else you will need to splice together or just have gutter guy do a cut and drop on your location of need. It will save some money but unless ur already an expert gutterman might as well let the experts take care of it at that point. P.s be sure to measure out exact location of ds holes unless you are gonna do those urself
Just what i needed for the home I purchased! Thank you! By the way... do you happen to have a video on how to retain heat inside a home? I'm tempted to tear down all the walls and reinsulate everything! Any suggestions?? Please!
@@abrindeyev There have been many complaints about spray foam insulation especially closed cell. Spray foam often hides termite activity. Closed cell traps moisture including water.
Get insulation blown in. They can blow it into finished walls. Ensure your attic insulation was properly installed. If you have batts, you can add another layer in the opposite direction as existing. If you have blown in, you could add more. If you have a crawlspace, insulate as appropriate for your region. In mine, we insulate crawlspace walls (leaving termite inspection gap), but not under/between joists. Check your window & door caulk & weatherstripping.
Shouldn't the overlap at the seams be the opposite direction so it goes with the flow of water? It would flow smoother and have less leakage when the sealant ultimately fails.

Just to double check myself, I went back an re-watched the video and I think Benton (the guy who also replied above) is right... that transition piece is designed to have the brown 4" aluminum downspout go into the transition plastic piece... We don't want you to get water into the awesome nice house you have there... Like I mentioned, just trying to help you out there... because we love what you do for us...! p.s. I don't know of any other DYI home improvement guy on RUclips who has brought a tear to my eyes like you did on your family home opening... Love and respect ya Jeff...!
Cheers Ray. no worries. I just couldn't get that thing to fit otherwise.
Happy to see you also have to go back to the store in the middle of your installs =) makes me feel better lol
I usually have to go 3 times
Thank you for the video Jeff.
🤩
Awesome job as always 👏
Thank you! This is literally my next project
Hope you enjoy it! cheers!
Great video ! Thanks again !
Great DIY Video Jeff, however the feet of every top pipe must always go inside of the lower one to prevent leaks.
I wish he had mentioned this as well. Also how to create the crimps with home tools to get the fit. Bought a house and the fit the down spots wrong and it's ruined the siding, had to figure out how to fix it
Complete rookie. Sorry. Cool video tho.
Exactly! Each piece should funnel the water into the next piece!
I really enjoyed this video, very informative.
Amazing video, thank you very much! I'm a new homeowner as of September 2021 and my 1-car detached garage does not have any rain gutters so I need to get some up... I was even thinking about funneling the water from the downspout into barrels and using that stored water for watering my lawn and mini garden.... right now the water falling from the roof of the garage is creating channels in my lawn and flooding low spots which are about 1ft off the garage
QUESTION: how would I fasten straps for the downspout to Stucco? Just drill it in?
You can buy what you need from those seamless guys too. The process is seamless, you slip him some cash and it comes outta the truck.
Thank you for the video.
Where did you get the bars that go in the ladder to secure ladder to top of roof, instead of the gutter area?
Pretty much anywhere that sells ladders. Rona, Home Depot, Lowes...... (ladder stand off arms)
home depot or amazon. amzn.to/3FRyLjB
Do your homework and buy a good stabilizer. The one he used is whack! Its dangerous and will damage shingles
@@ratrodmk6.554 any brand/ type recommendations?
Amazing!
Very good!! 👍👍💐
Jeff your house is looking so amazing!
Cheers!
Needed this video. I'm about to do this very job.
Cheers!
LOve all your shows great job young man.....
Down spout at the ground should be goin inside your bottom assembly, it’s goin to leak water at that joint the way you put it in
Love your videos, has helped me a ton in just my first 6 months of homeownership. I bought an old house with plaster walls. You have a massive library of drywall videos but I can't seem to find any for working with plaster. Any tips?? Thanks!
Check out Kirk Giordano videos. He covers plastering interior walls and a variety of exterior applications&repairs.
It's like being mentored🍻 thanks!
Will you be doing a video about the next steps and options to get the water away from the foundation?
You have a great personality and charisma Jeff.
good explanation
Good video!
I love DIY but seamless gutters leave fewer points to fail. The UV will break down sealant and seams will leak.
I just bought a house. Your channel is going to save me. Thanks.
This is perfect, getting ready to close on a house and should everything go okay, the first thing I need to do on the house is replace the gutters cause they're all old and messed up.
Same situation coming up here soon for me. Except, the house doesn't have any gutters atm. (older brick home)
Try pilates and cardio. We need you around to show us this stuff. And wear your PPE. God bless.
This guy is awesome
Great video, i did a few mistakes, in a hurry i wanted to.find how to integrate as as i had 30' to do but i ended up using the connectors, on the first edge, i put it 1" on the inside instead of outside, no big deal
I just called to have someone come out and do my gutters and then I thought, you know, I should see how difficult this is before I have them come out. I'll probably get a bid, but now I have the confidence to tell them no if the quote seems unreasonable. If I do it, I'll probably use a level though. Eyeballing things to save 60 seconds has led me to more work than I want to admit.
What you should've done when talking about ladder safety is insert the National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation clip
Thank you for this Jeff (and all your other amazing videos)!! Do you have information on the in-ground drainage system you attached the downspout to?
Great video, thanks. How much would be to install per linear feet if possible in the US, big city, average cost, in a house like the one in the video? It can be found a huge price margin from a handyman to a bigger contractor. And very often seen here that more expensive doesn't necessarily guarantees better quality. Thanks for help.
If you live down south with no snow, use rainhandlers, no ducting crap and wasted water all funneled to a few spots, just falls as harmless drops.
How much did the total renovation cost you to complete? Just found your channel and it has been great watching the progress!
" always keep 3 points of contact" Two minutes into the video two points of contact. Safety third LOL
What are your thoughts on installing leaf blocking gutters? Are they worth it? Does it affect installation?
I would have liked to have seen the after shots of the gutter.
He does warn, "safety second". There is no "safety squint" for ladder falls.
Hey Jeff, I was just looking at a product called trusscore(replacement for drywall). , can you tell me your thoughts regarding this product?
Not having drip edges overlapping the back edge of the gutters caused me all sorts of grief. The rain coming off the shingles curled back and got between the gutter and fascia boards, causing rot and providing water to termites!
'eavestroughs'. Your Canadian is showing. :D
nice work surface to scratch he gutters.
Jeff: Keep 3 points of contact going up
Jeff at 9:52 1 foot, no hands leaning lol
Love your content. Question I have, which is off topic - what rock is that you are using along the house and fence? We want to do away with mulch and use rock.
Thats half inch pea stone gravel.
Cheers 🎉
Could you discuss replacing fascia boards
This is very fortunate timing as I will be starting some gutter work in the new year. But I need some further advice, please. 0:46 What is "this" attachment called and where can they be purchase. Thanks
Would have been nice to see how you fit that last piece. But great video!
@Hello Ron how are you doing
That is a nice ladder!

Great video Jeff...👍 What are your thoughts on gutter guards or leaf guards for the gutters?
Love it

(24 F.L. gutter)
You should get one of those POV cameras so wet can see what you see.
Structurally? Of course
9:53 how many points of contact on that ladder. lol just busting your ball bearings, i love your channel and i have done a ton of carnival acts on a ladder as well.
looks like I'll need a large water tank in "very-dry" Southern California too. If it ever rains
Please!
Closed cell foam insulation?
@@maxmanx1294 thank you!
Shouldn't the overlap at the seams be the opposite direction so it goes with the flow of water? It would flow smoother and have less leakage when the sealant ultimately fails.
Absolutely, and it will fail eventually
Quick tip...easier to cut the hole for the outlet with a hole saw.
the metal downspout should go in the flex rubber pipe .
I tried that. I am thinking it would have been possible if it was warmer. cold materials shrink.
where can I get the ladders connections for the roof?
That downspout was a bee punch 16" to the right and you get measurements from the shingle or from the top part of the fascia, not the lower.
