It's still relevant, I'm planning on making a build centered around the 2600X and the 1660 Ti Mini. This is the perfect case for me because I fly out a lot.
I’m an over the road trucker and have already built one machine in a micro-atx case, and am looking at the parts for my next build and this case. It would fit within the available space in my truck. I’ve always come to Jay’s videos I get a better idea of case space and part arrangements. Great videos and even with this one being an older one it’s still crazy relevant!
So basically the best way to do this build is to (and correct me if I'm wrong) 1. Have the case standing upright with airflow fans 2. Buy the case first so you know which motherboard to get. 3. Get a blower-style graphics card. 4. Buy an aftermarket low-profile CPU cooler. Is that right?
***** Nice advice, thanks. My exact build is this: pcpartpicker.com/p/7yZhhM Mostly wondering 1) where is the best place to install the extra fan 2) What kind of fans would be best to get in the future or would it make no noticeable difference? 3) When adding additional fans / fan controller where and in what order should they be installed? This is basically the only part of the build I'm not 100% sure of yet.
Oh yeah, man! I can’t get enough. I’m a trucker by trade, but am becoming obsessed with building computers. Putting his talking vids on while I’m rolling the miles (paid RUclips so I can lock my screen), helps me get the job done!
Can get most of what you want in ATX or mATX in an itx motherboard into a case about the size of a console, the only thing that wont fit is an optical drive, but considering people can get external optical drives now, that isn't a huge issue. Many itx motherboards already come with wifi attached to, so one no longer needs to buy a network card or usb wifi Everything can be compact by using a m.2 or a 2.5 ssd drive. I'm just amazed that 6 years later, this case is still relevant for for itx cases. The only thing it doesn't have is tempered glass and tons of RGB, but for someone like me, I don't care about it, lol.
muaz naveed Yeah I'm happy with it. I bought it a week before the R9 390 came out. The Gtx 950 isn't bad. A have a friend who is running dual Gtx 480's. lol
This was a really helpful video, thank you. I completed my Node 202 build about a month ago. I went Ryzen 5 3600 with a Radeon RX 570 (good value for now, plan to upgrade in another year or two). Great little machine, but I can verify that adding the case fans to suck extra air into the GPU bay makes a huge difference. While I didn’t actually measure the temps inside the case with a thermometer, and just tested by touching the side of the case, it went from too hot to keep my hand on for more than a few seconds to just warm, while under stress playing a game like Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, or running the 3DMark stress test.
Oh, I'd also recommend always standing it on it's end, not flat on the surface, with the motherboard end up. That way the heat from the graphics card travels up and out the large vent on that end of the case. The vent at the graphics card end is much smaller, so that compartment may not stay as cool if you stand it with the video card up, though I haven't really put that to the test. Your video card should be spewing most of it's heat out it's own vent at the back most of the time anyway, but I find that have the motherboard end up to be most optimal for cooling.
+valtur25 Had a quick look at the specs for that PSU and it seems to only have the required cables for that case anyway. The only issue I could see is the SATA and PCI-E cables MAY be two seperate cables for each one (i.e 2 SATA cables and 2 PCI-E cables) instead of a single cable with two adapters in series. But not completely sure there...
+valtur25 Yep -- I would never pay Fractal for this pre-installed PSU. They are so behind the times with even all their best PSUs being non-modular to start with. And then this one's only a Bronze-rated anyway. Add to that, they're about a year and a half behind SilverStone with this specific case form-factor. I have to assume this thing better be WAY cheaper than the S.S. ('cause that one's aluminum). But if I was needing this use-case scenario, I'd willingly pay the premium for at least the upgrade to Silverstone's "SFX-L" PSU. Bigger fan (quieter), slightly more wattage, and MODULAR. I haven't even looked yet (and Jay didn't mention), but unless this case also comes in an empty version, where I can use a better PSU, I'm not even interested.
+boatrat74 yes it comes without psu also.. but the modular thing is not really a downside here as you will need all the cables anyway.. +OwenWalker nope the pcie and sata cables are coming from one cable with multible connectors in a row.. check this pic: www.overclock3d.net/gfx/articles/2015/06/02064558455l.jpg
+Dunkelelf3 The Bronze rating on the PSU is a downside (heat), the tiny fan on it is a downside (noisy). There appears to be plenty of room for Silverstone's longer SFX-L Gold 500w PSU there (quieter 120mm fan). If not, I would just go with their case instead. Since my earlier comment, I found the empty version of this one selling for $87. US ($80. +shipping). I don't see the PSU-included version for sale anywhere yet here. Silverstone's comparable FTZ01 is going for $120. Apart from just *looking* a lot better to me (aluminum with beveled edges), that also has a slot-load disc-player position, which I still think is a crucial *option* (you don't have to use it) on any PC, but especially an HTPC build. The lack of that last option alone, even apart from all the other considerations I mentioned, is a deal-breaker for me on this Fractal "HTPC"-oriented offering.
Just used parts of my first PC to use them in this case, and MAN it's awesome!! I can play emulation and 2k60fps PC games no problem with great temps. Cable management was A HASSLE, BUT so worth it when you get it right. And super quiet too!
+Anton_Da_Man Sounds like that will work flawlessly dude! Custom hardline definitely! But just cool the cables and the hardrive, maybe the power supply
This is a perfect build for our church. We already have a cramped sound booth. They want a small form factor PC put in their sound booth for handling our RUclips live stream. Great vlog build Jay. I may have to go with a Micro ATX board.
Used this case for my first pc build. Playing Ark Survival Evolved had my cpu peaking at 100°c... but! I added 2 40x10 fans to top of the case for exhaust and installed notua NA-FD1 cooler fan duct and my cpu temps went down to an average of 63°c. I also took your advice and used a gpu with a blower style cooler. That was a great tip!
+JayzTwoCents Wouldn't it be smart to use the CPU cooler as an exhaust (assuing you had a low profile aftermarket cooler)... normally it would blow down over the motherboard but getting a cooler that's as high as possible and flipping the fan... just seems to me like that would be the best option for this case...
+Kriss_941 Having the CPU cooler set as intake would still be better for CPU temps since it's drawing in cool air from the outside not to mention also decreasing motherboard temps and VRM temps. And given the dual-compartment design, the exhaust from the CPU fan would probably not do much for the GPU as it is pretty well isolated in it's own little chamber.
I swear you can read minds sometimes . This is about the third or fourth time you have reviewed/built something i have just been looking at! Thanks jay :)
Hey Jay I just wanna thank you for taking the time to great music. You and Linus made it very easy for me to learn to make my first system. I was a bit skeptical but you guys made everything simple and easy. Also what is the song that youre using for your intro?
Wow I should have proof read that. I meant to say "Thank you for taking the time to make great videos." Haha I think its because I was listening to the video at the same time!
+Michael Erickson update: finished my build. runs great! I switched out my twin frozr for the reference gpu so I could have the blower style, per your recommendation. Thanks again.
Glad you did this video, It looks good for a PFSence router I'm upgrading in as few weeks. Just the right size to not look out of place with my servers.
Just so you guys are aware, the Node 202 riser does not support PCIe 4.0! So if you intend to install an RX 5700 GPU on an X570 board, you have to downgrade your Mobo to PCIe 3.0
reference coolers will normally run hotter regardless. I have the exact same setup and the 970 ssc hovers around 78C with two 120mm fans blowing right at it. if you have a blower card it will most likely go above 80C because of its smaller fan/heatsink. I would prefer open-air over reference in almost any cases. you should be ok as long as ventilation is adequate
+Emmanuelle Rodriguez Nope, they are both blowing the same way. Remember EVGA uses a reverse bladed "sweep" style fan. It looks backwards but its pushing air onto the heatsink, not pulling through it.
Lol so you are telling me that I avoided these because I thought they push air out ? and went for the reference model instead ? either way big fan of your work !
+Alexandre Oliveira nope.. my zotac gtx 970 amp extreme got 3 fans.. middle one is blowing air on the pcb the other 2 on the sides are blowing away from the pcb..
+ElZamo92 Stock Cooler are fine. I have a 3770 (which is hotter) in a very small case with only a 80mm fan. After 3 years and 2 years running a lot during the day, it still doesn't get over 77°C on 100% usage. 0 Throttling. Check your airflow, stock coolers are fine.
+Yosyp i had the same problem, with stock cooler my cpu reach 100c almost instantly with aida64 and i have plenty of airflow, i had to buy an aftermarket cooler to keep it cool.
I dont have any parts right now ... but my friend helped me on my pc and he gave me this link to show me how to build it... really good guide ty very much... i hope i wont wait 1 year to buy my pc LOL
You don't have a low profile Noctua CPU heatsink laying around? Why do a build guide if you are going to half-ass it? You have a half a million subscribers, and you need to bring the well thought out videos you are releasing!
Really good video. I'm planning a mITX build in a Silverstone RVZ02 this year. I really like these SFF builds and this has given me an idea of what I'm getting into. Great job. thanks Jay.
I've been thinking about doing my second build in a mini itx case whenever I decide to put it together. Going to be a challenge compared to the spacious carbide 300r I used in my first build.
I recommend Silverstone RVZ01 or FTZ01 case. I am running a 650 Watt power supply, H55 watercooler and gtx980. Also the fan filters are on the outside and much easier to clean.
+Roy Batty I have a RVZ01, doesn't really look as 'clean' as this though with the filters on the outside they are easier to clean. It also support a full size HD which is nice. I'm pretty happy with it.
My favorite build with a mini ITX and an X-99 board, water-cooled, and with a gtx1050 ti. I used a separately purchased modular 450w PSU. You can find more info on youtube on how to do this. You do need to modify the case somewhat.
Awesome video and a really nice build! I like the way that Fractal has oriented the casedesign. Sure its not so spacious or easy to build in but wow it sure looks great! And i really enjoyed the outtakes. Spot on! ;-)
I really wish Fractal had made the case just slightly wider so that it could accept a taller CPU cooler. I don't think an extra inch or so of depth would have made a huge difference in terms of the aesthetic or portability of the case: it would still look great in a home theater setup and would have given it much improved CPU cooler compatibility as there are some down-draft style CPU coolers that could fit if it had just been a little bit taller. Silverstone's RVZ01 for instance allowed for 83mm of CPU cooler clearance which meant that you could fit something like the Noctua NH-L12 in it (you can even use the top fan if you replace it with a slim 120mm). Anyway, great video as always Jay. It's always nice to see you build something other than an over-the-top water cooling system.
Might be a silly question, but are you not at all concerned about having the 2 extra case fans so close to the GPU fans? I'm thinking turbulance could be an issue? Or do you not need to worry about that with SP fans?
i have the node 202. took your advice and got some fractal design static pressure fans. dropped my VC temps 5-10C (blower style rx480) didnt have a noticeable drop in my CPU temps but thats on the stock cooler
Nice review. Its certainly a nice case. I decided on the Raven RVZ01 as you can fit a Corsair H55 and overclock to 4.4ghz (3770k) and my 970 (EVGA FTW) is OC'd and hits 73C max. So the trade off is a few mm in size and certainly looks. Horses for courses anyways.
Would an R9 Fury X fit in here? I thinking that the card would take up one fan slot while the fan and radiator would be able to fit in the seconds fan mount without being blocked up by the card. Only potential I think would be the tubing bunching up and getting in the way which would call for custom length tubes.
This is one hell of a small build. Though I'm curious. Why motherboard backplate on this small build? it would give the much needed extra exuast in such a small build? Wonder if you can test temps with backplate on and off...
@JayzTwoCents Would a none blower style card really be that bad of an idea for this case jay. I feel like i have no choice than to do what you did in the video. Blower style cards are almost impossible to get here in Sweden.
Blower cards will still work, you would have to adjust the fan profiles to be more aggressive. You are buying this case for its size, not for its cooling capabilities.
@@DamienK28 yea I'm doing alright, the graphicscard is running a little hotter than I'd like but it's acceptable. I'm kinda tempted to watercool this case one day, but the limited space worries me :D
I very much appreciate the SFF build videos. I can confirm that Fractal Design makes amazing cases. I love my Arc Midi 2. It's the best case that I have ever used so far. Great impersonations of some great RUclipsrs!
Is there enough clearance between the motherboard and the bottom panel ? Some mini ITX MB has M2 slot connector underneat and I wish to use it. I have notice, in the video, a square rubber spacer, but i'm not sure if it would get in the way or if it would rise de board enough. Thanks!
Thanks, understand this is an old video, but I'm building a 9600/2070 in this case, just wanted to see how you did it, really helpful, I'm going to use a Noctua CPU cooler and Noctua 120 case fans, Seasonic 650 PS, this will be a HTPC/Gaming PC, usually game @1440 on 4k TV, might try a 2080 @4k, to see if it cools in this small case, would like to try blower GPU, but I don't have one, PS cabling might have issues, down the road may buy some custom length PS cables if this all comes together, once again Thanks.
Great Vid Jay.. Several things. The stock cooler for the i7 would have been better, as it has a copper core, giving better heat dissipation. Not just the height of it. I realize you had the i3 one, but still.. This case seems to have a major flaw, and that is you have to remove the bottom cover, that has clips to get the the filters. Plastic clips are great for a few times, then they break. The filters should have been on the outside. Keep up the great work.. Looking forward to skunk works..
I'm thinking about making an itx build in the node 202 for my family to replace a console and streaming device. I'm just wondering if we could stream video in 4K, and play games in 1080p
I really like the look of this case, but why oh why would they engineer the dust filters to be on the inside of the case???? Doesn't that make for a bigger headache when you need to clean the filters? Or can you install them on the outside of the case? Thanks Jay, great vid as always!
Nice Build Jay ! Have you had a chance to use it in your entertainment center, stream some movies. One quick question love this case! How is the on board sound quality the reason I am asking Is I run a nice home audio system and have always have had issue with itx form factor to run my asus xonar stx sound is there an itx board out there that will support both graphics and sound card? That is the only reason I have this big atx box in my entertainment center. Thanks Jay
they nailed it. though by adding 1-2sm on the right side for better cable management/ssd placement and maybe 1sm on the left for a bit bigger cpu cooler this could be even better. i also thought that maybe you can place single fan watercooler in there by sacrificing gpu leight, but not shure about that.
Incredibly, this video is still relevant in 2019.
Wonder if it's still in use.

+Emmanuelle Rodriguez Nope, they are both blowing the same way. Remember EVGA uses a reverse bladed "sweep" style fan. It looks backwards but its pushing air onto the heatsink, not pulling through it.
+Emmanuelle Rodriguez GPU fans are always intake.
Lol so you are telling me that I avoided these because I thought they push air out ? and went for the reference model instead ? either way big fan of your work !
+Emmanuelle Rodriguez Yeah, that's why you avoided them LOL
+Alexandre Oliveira nope.. my zotac gtx 970 amp extreme got 3 fans.. middle one is blowing air on the pcb the other 2 on the sides are blowing away from the pcb..
Really liking the new camera work Jay!
I bought a 4790k and ran it at stock speed with the stock cooler, and it throttled like a bitch in Aida 64, up to about 30%.
Moral of the story: don't use stock coolers on k SKUs
+ElZamo92 Stock Cooler are fine.
I have a 3770 (which is hotter) in a very small case with only a 80mm fan.
After 3 years and 2 years running a lot during the day, it still doesn't get over 77°C on 100% usage.
0 Throttling.
Check your airflow, stock coolers are fine.
I run mine with a stock cooler and its fine
+Yosyp i had the same problem, with stock cooler my cpu reach 100c almost instantly with aida64 and i have plenty of airflow, i had to buy an aftermarket cooler to keep it cool.
+ElZamo92 Check thermal paste.
Clean and reapply.
The outtakes were the best!
This video needs an ifixit kit
I dont have any parts right now ... but my friend helped me on my pc and he gave me this link to show me how to build it... really good guide ty very much... i hope i wont wait 1 year to buy my pc LOL
You don't have a low profile Noctua CPU heatsink laying around? Why do a build guide if you are going to half-ass it? You have a half a million subscribers, and you need to bring the well thought out videos you are releasing!
Been looking for a console killer case that looks this good for a while...NICE!
If you didn't get that joke in the beginning you're gullible.
we all do
most of us do maybe XD
+fo shizzle everyone
+Bacon PvP I bet everyone did
That was the easiest joke to get tbh
Best video in yet!!! Please do more!
I BET 10000$ JAY WONT REPLY TO MY COMMENT
you will owe jay 10 grand very soon
I would delete that comment asap if I were you
+ExtermeGamer Where's my money!?
+ExtermeGamer what's with everyone begging /almost whoring for op/video creator's comment these days?
+Villain I want a new video by Jay called "ExtremeGamer's Lost Bet Build".... you could make a serious system with that dough.
I'm liking the new camera angles.
Really good video. I'm planning a mITX build in a Silverstone RVZ02 this year. I really like these SFF builds and this has given me an idea of what I'm getting into. Great job. thanks Jay.
Still relevant in 2021. J2C is the best.
I've been thinking about doing my second build in a mini itx case whenever I decide to put it together.
Going to be a challenge compared to the spacious carbide 300r I used in my first build.
Jay this format was really nice, even if you can always get another camera man, a tiredpod at another angle is nice.
Those impressions were actually pretty good!
very nicely done cable management! ... good job jay ! .....
From 2019. Thanks Jay! Going to build my 202 with a 1070ti! Wish me luck!
Hahaha that PaulsHardware impression was spot on. Nice end to a nice video
Fantastic video guide and review. Loved it.
OMG, the gag real at the end was funny!!! Great video, once again! Keep up the great work Jay.
Jayz you are actually a cool looking dude (referring to the close up when you were screwing in the GFX card) good on you man
I recommend Silverstone RVZ01 or FTZ01 case.
I'm pretty happy with it.
mushieslushie
I use the RVZ01 too, but if you want a cleaner look you can go for the FTZ01.
Whoa, you surprised me with the super high quality of this video Jay!
The others are also quite enjoyable but this one is impressive.
nice music jay. your video quality has improved tremendously
Spot on! ;-)
LMFAO! Look at JayzTwoCents' face at 8:56. He almost says: "And whatever the hell you're putting in here".
Digging the new intro music
just watched this for the first time and the "Barnacules intro" at the end was spot on, you guys arent friends or anything :D
Beautiful and practical case.
ahaha the Paul impression was actually pretty spot on!
Hahaha Jay that blooper reel was much needed! I hope to see a few more of those :)
15:44 you said blower style card, but pick an atmosferic one Jay!
Great video i love your build videos :)
AWESOME COMPLETE VIDEO! Amazing work Jaaaayyy!!
Sounds promising. Especially the effect the SP fans has on the GPU temps. Thanks for sharing.
Do you think it's really worth for gaming? I want to put it with a 1070 in there
I wouldn't do it if u have the desk space for a full sized case. I have a small computer room. small desk. so... small computer.
I liked this newer type of intro. Very interesting and more professional
Jay is on a roll this holiday season. A veritable Santa Claus with a screw driver. Great job, and keep up the great build content!
ahahaaa I loved the Paul's hardware/Barnacules parodies you did at the end!
Great impersonations of some great RUclipsrs!
eye digress? very clever Jay
I award thee with a /thumbsup for this and your excellent impression of Paul.
How's your temperatures? I'm planning on using a 3700x and 2070 Super in this thing with two 120 mm Noctua fans and an NH-L9a
2:25 - The Fractal Node 202 supports cpu coolers up to 56mm only.
Thanks for the tips from Costa Rica
Convection is generally based with fluids, love the build jay keep inspiring:)
I'm thinking about making an itx build in the node 202 for my family to replace a console and streaming device. I'm just wondering if we could stream video in 4K, and play games in 1080p
Thats dependent on your internet speed, graphics card and processor. If you choose the right parts, yes.
The magnetic dust filter can be moved to the outside of the case if you like to clean often.
Nice work on the build there Fractal Josh
Thanks Jay
LOL. Love the outtakes. Your Paul impression is dead on.
I love small form factor pcs. And I love Jay. This video gets 9/8
im more thinking a 3.5/4
I give it a perfect 5/7
+Mr. Keto the Facebook troll?
Intel Core i7 6900K
What else?
Mr. Keto Fucking awesome :D
they nailed it. though by adding 1-2sm on the right side for better cable management/ssd placement and maybe 1sm on the left for a bit bigger cpu cooler this could be even better. i also thought that maybe you can place single fan watercooler in there by sacrificing gpu leight, but not shure about that.
