it's not that he's underrated and low budget does not equate to low quality. in fact, i would argue that there are more low budget masterpieces than high budget masterpieces. gyllenhaal takes lower budget films for a reason. it's a breeding ground for ingenuity and creative freedom.
Austin Leih I get it, That’s why I make the argument over n over that shia labeouf is the best actor IMO and we’re going to really see it soon. His last few movies have been outstanding and he’s got another three that I think he’s going to kill as well. A lot of people never even watched man down and he was awesome in it same with American honey both low budget but way better acting then the transformers (which I’ve never seen but I’d bet on it)
The biggest reason is the insane corruption of awards shows ever since their conception in hollywood. If you don't bribe enough people you don't get the award unless your product is extremely "progressive" and Niche. Much like modern art where the objective value isn't nearly as large as the value of being used to prove how pretensions you are over a 30x30 foot painting with a single paint splotch in the center and it's deep sociopolitical value to society at large. The only awards that really matter are the revenue compared to investment and how much money you can demand for a contract for hollywood.
Carey Mulligan is the star of this film and Jake is the side piece and they're both flipping amazing in it. Mulligan was snubbed an Oscar nom, big styley!
I’m a huge Jake Gyllenhaal fan and Carey Mulligan did a great job and the cinematography was absolutely amazing but I have to say - my heart wrenched for that boy from start to finish. Ed Oxenbould did a perfect portrayal of what it must have felt like to be Joe Brinson every moment of this movie. Really well done.
The movie left me the sensation of how broken a parent can leave their kid. The mother seems to realize that she’s destroying her family and most importantly her child. But she doesn’t seem to know how to even begin to stop. I love the ending, in a depressing way it’s beautiful, the mom tearing up and the son smiling trying to recreate a portrait of what his family used to be.
I'm 23 and haven't cried since i was a kid. I couldn't help but shed a tear when that boy was taking his parents to the photography shop. Insane movie, It has been one full day after watching the movie and It has me feeling blue as hell.
It looks like Paul Dano got the very most out of a small story of one family's marital hardships that had to be nearly impossible to pitch to investors. The cinematography, the locations and cast look to be spot on . Carey Mulligan looks great here in the lead and the young man has to be good as the story is told from his point of view. I am really looking forward to seeing this Richard Ford novel come to life on the silver screen.
I saw this at NYFF yesterday and it was phenomenal! Gripping from start to finish, such rich characters and performances, and the kind of movie that you want to watch again immediately after it ends.
@@manonty2417 Not in my experience - it was emotional, but it never seemed completely hopeless. It was honest, I guess, though I'm not a child of divorce and so I can't speak for someone who might go into the film with a closer relationship to the story.
All I can say is that this movie is a masterpiece for whom has an insight about family bonds, disappointment and raising kids overwhelmingly surround in drama
The first time I saw the young man who stars in this, he reminded me of Paul Dano. I had NO IDEA that Paul Dano had anything to do with the film. As far as I know, there's no relation. It's just really interesting casting. They could definitely play father and son.
Jake's already in two of the best films of the year...this and The Sisters Brothers, a fascinating western with a fresh feel. I caught this yesterday, Oct 29, on a Monday early matinee. Nice quiet theater. Highly recommend. Early rural 60's perfectly realized. Unusual dialogue makes this film stand part. Cary has a very direct way of dealing with her kid. And us.
Omg watching this film makes you HATE Carey Mulligans character, and Joe the boy, how the F he let some man french kiss his married mother like that. Anyhow brilliant film. Ending made me cry.
Watched this movie today. Did not find it entertaining, just depressing. Of the three main characters, their son, Joe, was better than either parent. His mother was the worst and displayed selfish and disgusting behavior in front of her son. However, the actors did a very good job in a slow, depressing movie.
So gonna watch this...three of my favourite actors really. Paul Dano, Carey Mulligan, & Jake Gyllenhal. They’re somehow underrated but their choices for roles and movies are classy.
Good women have that thing in common: they fail badly to understand their men that one time when they need it the most. My dad was a firefighter. Bless all firefighters.
I swear... this flick has the keenest insight on raw human behavior.... like, every acted moment... I could just FEEL what it was they were feeling on the most primal level. that's hard to get out of your actors... it's one of the reasons I love this flick so much!!!
based on very nice true life when parents separate its very difficult for a kid to face life ........very tough and rough........and wonderfully performed by Jake Gyllenhaal, Carey Mulligan as husband and wife really won our hearts.
One of the film snubs this year award seasons and a long-shot Oscars film but critics loves about this movie and the performances of the actors mostly Carey Mulligan.. Still i want to watch it
Carey Mulligan and Ed Oxenbould were wonderful in this movie! Jake Gyllenhall is always good in every role he takes on. Found this movie on Nextflix randomly and decided to give it a shot. It was a much much better movie than I thought. Really enjoyed it!
Jake is so underrated.
He takes these low budget movies and turns them into masterpieces
guytanno1 he’s not really in the movie that much. Carey Mulligan is much more the main character.
it's not that he's underrated and low budget does not equate to low quality. in fact, i would argue that there are more low budget masterpieces than high budget masterpieces.

Well said.
I was just saying to someone how underrated Jake Gyllenhaal is, it's crazy he hasn't won any Oscars yet.
Can we talk about why Jake Gyllenhaal hasn't won an Oscar yet...?
Ric Clifton Nightcrawler is an underrated masterpiece tbh, he was incredible in Prisoners as well
He's gonna be the next Leo and finally win one after being nominated multiple times lol
Have you watched Enemy?
Because he is black

This looks great and I will watch absolutely anything with Jake Gyllenhaal in it.
I just saw the movie, it was pretentious as shit. Sorry for the bad news :-(
Took the words right out of my mouth.
Me too
That is so gay.
I dunno. Seems like they tried so hard to be elegant, it may have ended up lifeless.
That last scene when Carey and Jake are about to take the photo, shaking and trying to hold themselves together...god this is breathtaking.
THAT PART!!!! I fucking lost it, all tears!!!
0:54 Wow, impressive how he made that toot sound by blowing into the kid's face
GOD I CANT UNSEE/HEAR IT NOW. LOLOL
ffs hahahahah
This looks depressing as hell, its definitely for me
I may need to get back on zoloft after this movie!!! Gotta find my prescription refill!
Same. I also love most films starring Jake Gyllenhaal.
✋
Hehe, nice comment!
me too.
paul dano is naturally amazing wtffff jake and carey look ready to collect their oscars
That's not Paul dano that's Ed Oxenbould
If you like Paul dano you should watch Swiss army man
@@Clarkyclark123
haha. Paul Dano directed this movie smart stuff
@@Clarkyclark123 Though I agree on the Swiss Army Man recommendation. Awesome movie, but not for everyone.
This movie deserved way, way more recognition. Masterfully done
Why is nobody talking about Carey Mulligan? She's one of the best actresses working today
piiaricciulli IKR! I really look up to her in the talent department. Not many others like her
amazing actress
Fell in love with her ever since Never Let Me Go
*JAKE THE BEST ATOR*

it’s a yes from me. I have watched all of jake gyllenhaal’s movies and I don’t plan on stopping now
Lmao same.

Two of my favourite characters. Carey is SO underrated!
Paul and Jake working together? Yes please.
Looks like a cheerful film.

Not crying isn't something to take pride in. It just means you are unfeeling. GEt help.
Parents aren't the gods we hope they are when we were kids.. A lot of stuff came to my mind watching this and not all was good...
I can’t stop watching this trailer
This movie has the most beautiful shots I’ve ever seen
I'll literally watch anything with Jake Gyllenhaal ♥
My man Paul Dano delivering us a emotional bomb. I feel like I'm gonna be ranking him amongst my fave directors if this is anything to go by.

"Why do you think men do things?
They either go crazy or it's a woman. " This isn't entirely true, but it's more true that it should be.
I only knew of Cary Mulligan ftom Drive. I wont forget her name again. Astonishing performance , very nuanced character in this movie
At the end I didn't know if I loved or hated her character in the movie. She's phenomenal in the movie. ❤️
like she was bitch lol how i could love my mom while she bring man to fk her in the same time my dad work hard for us
100/100 she was bitch xd
I’m still young but duuude this looks depressing and makes feel anxious for what the future holds for me...
Some grown-ups try too hard to be profound and end up surreal and depressing. It's a bad road. Avoid it. There's nothing there.

@@OldMoneyAudition09 Thank you, Jay.
good news is it doesn't matter cause 100 years from now nobody will even remember that you were alive

Paul Dano is an intense, amazing actor. (Loved him opposite Day-Lewis in There Will Be Blood) Looks like an amazing directorial debut.

This looks a lot like it’s going to be like the movie “ Revolutionary Road”.
first thing I had in mind while watching

Jake very good actor
How the hell did I miss this?? Excited to watch on Netflix
