i do really enjoy my work. some jobs i hate, i hate miying cob, i hate digging, anything where i am sliding around in the mud i dont usualay enjoy very much but making building things i do enjoy. and this little building was very fun to build because i could do most of it in my little workshop. really enjoying my new life overall.
Man,, Kris that brought back memories, when I was in my pre teens and teens I made many a shingle with a froe. We split Cedar, Oak and Ash, I got 5 cents a bundle of 45. LOL.. Fantastic work my friend.
Nice job Kris. I like your videos, wish you had time to post more. You are becoming a very good craftsman. Also, you have to appreciate the irony of using modern tools with ancient building methods.
the irony of using ancient tools is people spent a life time builing even a small structure and usually died working themselves to death before it was done, thats why better ways and tools were invented,im sure Kris doesnt have that kind of time to die before this video was done, now thats ironey Bruh!Just sayin
Man... make sure a tree doesnt fall on it! That is some work you put into a little roof for your hydro generator!! So glad it's not just your hobby but you're sharing it with the world.
Yes that woud be very sad.... luckily the trees close to it look pretty solid. it was a lot of work but i enjoy looking at it. and that is important to me. glad you are enjoying the videos.
I love your channel Kris, I liked it when you spoke, I like what your doing now, maybe you should make your roundhouse build into one video, an easy to watch 10 min abridged megamix, cut it in the style that you are using at the moment, the sort of primitive technology vibe. I feel like it would get a lot of views, I’d certainly watch it again... keep up the good work mate!
Your hard work is pretty awesome looking and beautiful with all from your dream of building this project is so inspiring to see the results and style 👍👍👍
Awesome work Kris . You boost my motivation every day. I will right now change piston in my chainsaw and hope tomorrow make some lumber for my goats and chicken shelter. Thumbs up!
Great stuff Mr Chris. Either your skills are improving, or I haven't been paying much attention (most likely the latter). Looking forward to your 'main' project, keep the faith:)
Great video, cool project. I would avoid round dovels. With more square there is less risk of splitting the wood because the dovel can deform and jam in better.
Good video Kris. Can't wait for it to be up and running. I'm in it for the long run so take your time. Have the lots of time off over Christmas if your allowing fans to help out ?
Great new vid Kris!! Been watching your vids for yonks! Keep up the great work man.....just a thought.......for the top piece of the shingles why not half a log and hollow it out so you have a one piece cover for the roof eve! Just saying!? Cracking stuff! 🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻
that's a ton of work but that roof is awesome! hey man just an idea like that, have you seen the Japanese (i don't remember quite the name) technique of charring the wood to preserve it? they say it last like a good 50 years without anything else and the looks is pretty nice, just thinking that could be a cheap and traditional way to do it like for the siding
When you are planing out the shoulder on a joint like that... When you get to the pointe where you have run the chisel from the end to the shoulder, and now you are using the chisel to cut off the slivers/shavings, at the shoulder... Instead of chopping down with the chisel, try giving the chisel a quick sideways slice.
Hey Kris, I wanted to let you know I had a hard time finding you on Patreon. It took three times and I almost gave up but something kept nagging at me to continue. I had never heard of Patreon before but when you mentioned it in one of your videos I wanted to support you. So I signed up but when it linked to my RUclips account your channel didn't come up even though I'm subscribed. When I typed your name in the search window a bunch of weird stuff came up but nothing close to you. On my third try I forgot to capitalize 'kris' and finally found you. I wanted to let you know in case other people are having trouble too and not supporting you because they can't find you. And I hope the restructuring and added fees at Patreon don't end up hurting you and the other creators. You're doing incredible work and I'm constantly amazed and inspired by all you do. I've built an earth-sheltered earthbag cabin and am planning a cordwood addition for the second story so I loved watching your cordwood build. Thanks for all your great videos, you're helping and inspiring a lot of people!
Hi, well thank you so much for your support it really helps a a lot. i usually put a lint in the description of videos and there is a little icon on the top right side of the channel page. i tend not to direct people to it to aggressively because i dont want to sound like im begging if you know what i mean. i think people know im not trying to beg for money but i still thinks its best if people find it naturally if they have a desire to support the channel. i have been meaning to do a patreon give away raffle. im going to carve a bowl and pull some names out of a hat. a way of saying thank you so keep a look out for that. thanks again for your support and good luck with your build. i would love to see pictures.
Great work Kris - you were lucky to get that oak for your shingles, (or shakes, as I think the riven ones are sometimes called). You are using larch alot elsewhere and there's plenty of it about in Wales at the moment - have you tried using that for shingles? I’m not sure if it splits as well as oak....Anyway you’ve inspired me to have a go, yours is so beautiful!
Very nice work, Kris. But why did you not make the roof a bit longer at front and back? the walls would be much better protectet from the rain with an overhanging roof.
peter hase the sides are long enough. its not a tall building. front and back could have a bit more but its not too short. besides, that wood will stay good for a few decades
Hello Kris, nicely done. One question, I have never done my own shingles but I heard that you should not cut the grain on the flat part of the shingle. Part of the waterproofing should be the way the wood splits without breaking the fibers. I guess your oak shingles are going to last very long nevertheless but did you take this into consideration? Anyway, great work as always, I envy you since the building code in my country doesn't allow for anything like this...
if it was for habitation or something then yes but nothing in there will be effected by the odd leak. but it does not leak anyway so it should be fine.
Looks good, but you need a row of half boards before the capping. Otherwise it is going to leak. Right now nothing is covering the gabs in the top row.
Sure, I understand not wanting to be aggressive about the Patreon thing, but I couldn't find any links or icons to it at all on your RUclips channel, and I clicked on any and everything. It's probably just me being blind and ignorant though. And maybe Patreon will use the additional fees to improve the site and change the search window so it's not case-sensitive... I'd be glad to send pictures of my build, where should I send them? It's pretty boring compared to yours, though, I love all your "bendy bits" and the wonky wood you use, that ladder was gorgeous! And I almost hated to see the round wood post and beam frame of your workshop get covered up, it was so beautiful to look at. Btw, watching you mill the lumber for your flooring inspired me to order a chainsaw mill and I hope to mill the joists, rafters and decking for my addition. For ethical reasons i don't want to buy any new lumber and want to use recycled or what I cut myself. Thanks again for all the great videos!
Great work...but I have to say I cringed watching you make shakes out of that beautiful old oak tree. I'd much rather have seen such a valuable tree go to furniture. I can't imagine what that rough lumber was worth. Thousands
You should be very proud of everything you have accomplished It is wonderful to see someone still doing it the old way.
Very well done love seeing someone young still doing things the old way a rapidly disappearing art for sure
the pride and passion you have shown throughout this whole project has been awesome.
Kris, I hope you enjoy your work as much as I enjoy watching. That way, we're both having a great time!
i do really enjoy my work. some jobs i hate, i hate miying cob, i hate digging, anything where i am sliding around in the mud i dont usualay enjoy very much but making building things i do enjoy. and this little building was very fun to build because i could do most of it in my little workshop. really enjoying my new life overall.

Brilliant. Superb craftsmanship. I appreciate your thoughtful approach to your projects and never miss an episode. Thanks for your channel.

You're taking the Tiny house movement to a whole new level.
Just awesome! It's impressive to see all the steps and how much work goes into each piece of wood. Thanks so much for posting all these videos.
Hey Kris! I really like the sped up shots when you were nailing down the shingles. Those were great!
Beautiful work, Kris.
You are learning lots of techniques and getting proficient at them!!! Good job well done!!!
Looking great Kris, I think the idea of a voice over is a good one.
Nice shingle roof and frame. Cant wait to see it finished.
Another work of beauty Kris. Bloody brilliant it is you are.
Always glad to see one of these in my feed.
Wow dude, only just come across your channel. What fantastic work you must be so proud of what you are achieving. I’m very envious of your creativity!
Dude, I wish I had those woodworking skills! Badass!
Beautiful work
Love the 'made from scratch' shingles
What a beauty Kris !
Nice job Kris, very impressive
Top work again Kris. Keep it up

Good Job with making shingles the old way by hand, its alot more challenging with cold hands in poor december light.
i cant tell you how manny times i bashed my cold hands and had to stand for a second and compose myself.
very nicely done! good choice of roofing it looks great :D
Those shingles will last forever!! Can I move in? Just love your place!! 👍👍 Vinny 🇺🇸
Chippy skill level 1000😉👍👍
Nice too see old skills being used and raw wood that would have rotted if left over the years it makes the place cleaner
Superb editing. Thanks
Your hard work is pretty awesome looking and beautiful with all from your dream of building this project is so inspiring to see the results and style 👍👍👍
Thank you, glad you are enjoying my work
Stunning
wonderful, that powerhouse will stand for some time!
Good work! :)
Awesome work Kris . You boost my motivation every day. I will right now change piston in my chainsaw and hope tomorrow make some lumber for my goats and chicken shelter. Thumbs up!
Im glad to hear that, good for you, get out and get some done. :D
Liked and subscribed. You efforts are very impressive indeed.
Cheers Kris ✌
Nice job!
Great stuff Mr Chris. Either your skills are improving, or I haven't been paying much attention (most likely the latter). Looking forward to your 'main' project, keep the faith:)
You're hired! See you Monday morning.
Great video, cool project. I would avoid round dovels. With more square there is less risk of splitting the wood because the dovel can deform and jam in better.
awesome!
Good video Kris. Can't wait for it to be up and running. I'm in it for the long run so take your time.
Have the lots of time off over Christmas if your allowing fans to help out ?
Great work Kris! And you dropped your phone at 6:07. Lol.
nice job

nice idea, but it wold be quite a big log! not sure i fancy carving that out.

Hi Kris... I am new to your channel I enjoy your work...Peter
Nice work!! I'll bet it took a long time to make all those shingles!!
it was about 3 days there is about 200 of them
Just a suggestion but perhaps try burn treating some of the lumber to make it last longer. Natural and very effective.
Cool

You should speed up all your videos. You're a very talented and skilled man. Like true Craftsman.
you like the new style with no talking and lots of content in a short time?
I love the amount of content. I do miss hearing your thought-processes and explanations though.
Nice
Thats a wide skillset
Nice 🚾
😁

when you put the roof,, and you remember me to "primitive tecnolody chanel"
Awesome work, obviously i don’t know your plans but i dont understand how it’s going to work.
So little space for water under the house...?
its a low flow system that is plenty of space for the water to flow away.
nice job lots of hard work, but im sure cedar would be quite a few times better as choice for shingles if available.
i dont think there is a huge difference between oak and cedar, on a steep pitched roof oak can last 80-100 years
i liked this style ov video bro , fuckin awsom work 👍🏻
This is an early one Kris
Great to see your still at it!
I am assuming you are going to use dab and wattle for the walls. I am wondering if that is wise in a water environment.
gravity make water fall, the building has a roof with big overhangs it will be dry everywhere other than where the stream flows through
Dude, you're doing awesome work. So great that you're sharing so much. But man, get yourself some chainsaw gear. It only takes one kick-back or slip..
Very nice work, Kris. But why did you not make the roof a bit longer at front and back? the walls would be much better protectet from the rain with an overhanging roof.

The axe sounds like you're hitting a forcefield when you first use it haha
Do you think you should have put a moisture barrier under the shingles? Are you going to tar it or something?
Thanks for sharing.
if it was for habitation or something then yes but nothing in there will be effected by the odd leak. but it does not leak anyway so it should be fine.
Great Work. are you related Aled Jones?
How long did it take you to prepare all those shingles? At least it is only a small roof!
It pains me to see you do all this beautiful work and not treat the wood exposed to the water with some pitch tar. Great work non the less. :)
larch is full of natural chemicals that resist rot.
Oh. Ok. Thats good. :)
Are you living there full time yet?
Looks good, but you need a row of half boards before the capping. Otherwise it is going to leak. Right now nothing is covering the gabs in the top row.
i ran out of oak to make the shingles so there is a layer of black plastic covering that gap hidden under the tiles. it wont leak.

I love the videos, but do feel a little lonely not hearing your voice any more.
Did you pick up your phone you dropped at 6:08?
i did, its in a bright green waterproof case for a reason :)
I didn't recognize it as a phone. Thought maybe lozenges, cigs or cards.
RIP cellphone
that is why it is in a bright green waterproof case. its just fine
Great work...but I have to say I cringed watching you make shakes out of that beautiful old oak tree. I'd much rather have seen such a valuable tree go to furniture. I can't imagine what that rough lumber was worth. Thousands
Hi Kris I'm not sure if you've got it or not but I message you on Instagram, have a look let me know if it's any good to you.
Hi mark, i have no message from you. maybe try sending again?
Just PM you on your instagram again mate
Your phone lost
