      i do really enjoy my work. some jobs i hate, i hate miying cob, i hate digging, anything where i am sliding around in the mud i dont usualay enjoy very much but making building things i do enjoy. and this little building was very fun to build because i could do most of it in my little workshop. really enjoying my new life overall.

    Man,, Kris that brought back memories, when I was in my pre teens and teens I made many a shingle with a froe. We split Cedar, Oak and Ash, I got 5 cents a bundle of 45. LOL.. Fantastic work my friend.

    Nice job Kris. I like your videos, wish you had time to post more. You are becoming a very good craftsman. Also, you have to appreciate the irony of using modern tools with ancient building methods.

    • @stevenlarson3899
      @stevenlarson3899 6 лет назад +1

      the irony of using ancient tools is people spent a life time builing even a small structure and usually died working themselves to death before it was done,thats why better ways and tools were invented,im sure Kris doesnt have that kind of time to die before this video was done,now thats ironey Bruh!Just sayin

    I love your channel Kris, I liked it when you spoke, I like what your doing now, maybe you should make your roundhouse build into one video, an easy to watch 10 min abridged megamix, cut it in the style that you are using at the moment, the sort of primitive technology vibe. I feel like it would get a lot of views, I’d certainly watch it again... keep up the good work mate!

    that's a ton of work but that roof is awesome! hey man just an idea like that, have you seen the Japanese (i don't remember quite the name) technique of charring the wood to preserve it? they say it last like a good 50 years without anything else and the looks is pretty nice, just thinking that could be a cheap and traditional way to do it like for the siding

    When you are planing out the shoulder on a joint like that... When you get to the pointe where you have run the chisel from the end to the shoulder, and now you are using the chisel to cut off the slivers/shavings, at the shoulder... Instead of chopping down with the chisel, try giving the chisel a quick sideways slice.

    Hey Kris, I wanted to let you know I had a hard time finding you on Patreon. It took three times and I almost gave up but something kept nagging at me to continue. I had never heard of Patreon before but when you mentioned it in one of your videos I wanted to support you. So I signed up but when it linked to my RUclips account your channel didn't come up even though I'm subscribed. When I typed your name in the search window a bunch of weird stuff came up but nothing close to you. On my third try I forgot to capitalize 'kris' and finally found you. I wanted to let you know in case other people are having trouble too and not supporting you because they can't find you. And I hope the restructuring and added fees at Patreon don't end up hurting you and the other creators. You're doing incredible work and I'm constantly amazed and inspired by all you do. I've built an earth-sheltered earthbag cabin and am planning a cordwood addition for the second story so I loved watching your cordwood build. Thanks for all your great videos, you're helping and inspiring a lot of people!

      Hi, well thank you so much for your support it really helps a a lot. i usually put a lint in the description of videos and there is a little icon on the top right side of the channel page. i tend not to direct people to it to aggressively because i dont want to sound like im begging if you know what i mean. i think people know im not trying to beg for money but i still thinks its best if people find it naturally if they have a desire to support the channel. i have been meaning to do a patreon give away raffle. im going to carve a bowl and pull some names out of a hat. a way of saying thank you so keep a look out for that.
      thanks again for your support and good luck with your build. i would love to see pictures.

    Great work Kris - you were lucky to get that oak for your shingles, (or shakes, as I think the riven ones are sometimes called). You are using larch alot elsewhere and there's plenty of it about in Wales at the moment - have you tried using that for shingles? I’m not sure if it splits as well as oak....Anyway you’ve inspired me to have a go, yours is so beautiful!

    • @Strange-Viking
      @Strange-Viking 6 лет назад

      peter hase the sides are long enough. its not a tall building. front and back could have a bit more but its not too short. besides, that wood will stay good for a few decades

  • @shnilej
    @shnilej 6 лет назад

    Hello Kris, nicely done. One question, I have never done my own shingles but I heard that you should not cut the grain on the flat part of the shingle. Part of the waterproofing should be the way the wood splits without breaking the fibers. I guess your oak shingles are going to last very long nevertheless but did you take this into consideration?
    Anyway, great work as always, I envy you since the building code in my country doesn't allow for anything like this...

      i ran out of oak to make the shingles so there is a layer of black plastic covering that gap hidden under the tiles. it wont leak.

    Sure, I understand not wanting to be aggressive about the Patreon thing, but I couldn't find any links or icons to it at all on your RUclips channel, and I clicked on any and everything. It's probably just me being blind and ignorant though. And maybe Patreon will use the additional fees to improve the site and change the search window so it's not case-sensitive... I'd be glad to send pictures of my build, where should I send them? It's pretty boring compared to yours, though, I love all your "bendy bits" and the wonky wood you use, that ladder was gorgeous! And I almost hated to see the round wood post and beam frame of your workshop get covered up, it was so beautiful to look at. Btw, watching you mill the lumber for your flooring inspired me to order a chainsaw mill and I hope to mill the joists, rafters and decking for my addition. For ethical reasons i don't want to buy any new lumber and want to use recycled or what I cut myself. Thanks again for all the great videos!
