Just as others have said, a great aspect of this game is its cinematic theme. The game play doesn’t take its self too seriously, but still includes a great amount of historical accuracy with regards to units and equipment. And combine arms tactics are what you would expect. I love the movie references which include Kelly’s heroes, Dirty Dozen, Band of Brothers, Fury, A Bridge Too Far, Enemy at the Gates, and many more. They also have several smaller expansions now called “Pulp Stories” which include fun units such as zombies and pumpkin soldiers. Lastly, the free fight games play like miniature games since you have the ability to build your own army with a point based system with lots and lots of options. Replay in this regard is endless. Nice review!
Thanks!
Librarians can be brutal! Haha. Check out this joke, which I haven't told in ages (so it's been long overdue): "Going to war without the French is like going duck-hunting without your accordion." :P
Ha!
"You'll only lose it". Priceless Cody.
Indeed. Thanks.
I backed this version of the game as my first foray into the series. One of it's aspects which sold it for me was it's thematic use of the classic WWII movie tropes such as "Kelly's Heroes", etc. Definitely worth mentioning for any fence sitters.
That’s very true. Borrows heavily from those thematic tropes. A great part of the game.
The Heroes Tactical series is excellent. Yes, you have to learn all the icons but once you understand the gameplay you'll love this series. Highly recommended.
Indeed.
The table presence is absolutely outstanding. The system is really quite easy for a tactical game, with most of the information needed printed on the counters and on the terrain. Too bad the products will presumably be even harder to find.
You are right about the table presence.
I owned the original version of this for a while, but I could never really make sense of the rule book. I really wanted to like this game because it looks super cool! If I can find it for a good price I might just give this new version a try. Great video as always, Cody!
Thanks.
You got the mechanics right. "Latest iteration" gives short shrift to the changes in this update to the original HoN which, as you note, you did not play.
Also, you missed the tongue in cheek approach the game takes. It is not a classic dudes on a map game, it is a depiction of how combat is presented in *movies* (why else is Oddball included as a tank commander?) and the cards principally serve as interrupts to really spice up the normal turn sequencing and attack process: rescue a unit from being eliminated, move AND fire, set up a machine gun after moving, taking initiative from the opponent, adding a command, etc. One scenario in the original has the two sides fighting over a farm house. Why? Because they want to sleep in it that night. No greater purpose, they just don't want to sleep in the open.
Also important are the tactical boosts which are scattered around the map. They provide long term benefits such as adding a permanent command, providing extra ammo, etc.
"Recruiting options" (which you don't delve into) allow you to select, if you are designing your own fights, a variable set of units to complete the basic unit (as depicted on the basic unit card usually one leader and three sections such as MG, rifle, scout). You can add ammo (boosts die rolls), or anti-armor units, or scouts, or different light vehicles, an MG section instead of a rifle section, etc)
Good points. Thanks.
Hey Cody! Thanks for the review. Love your work. You also got us into ST Ascendancy and it’s our favourite 4x now (over exodus, eclipse etc).
Having said that, this review is interesting. I feel the caveats you expressed were actually substantial while polite. The review was also short and much less glowing than CoH, for example. On that, I’d love to have seen contrast and comparison between HoN and CoH, especially given that these are compared on specific criteria on the CoH KS website.
Coming back to your main caveat - my brother and I played HoN a couple of years back and just didn’t get into it. It didn’t survive our initial attempts. Games don’t stay in our collection if they can’t grab us after the first couple of tries. The main reason this game didn’t capture us is the CBA didn’t stack up. The costs (learning curve and fiddly rules) exceeded the payoff (game flow and excitement). It seems CoH gets this balance much better in favour of the cinematic feel, tension building and flow of the game.
Thanks. I appreciate your kind words. HoN and CoH are two very different games when it comes to gameplay, IMHO, although they share similar themes.
By "CoH", are you talking about "Company of Heros", or "Conflict of Heroes"???
The latter is very similar to HoN in many regards while the former isn't similar at all except in theme. So, it helps to know which "CoH" you're talking about.
@@bgm-1961 Good point. I was referring to Company of Heroes.
Another great review! I love the system... and have a lot of it. I know that there are storage solutions... but set up and tear down are a little frustrating. I can spend an afternoon finding the pieces for a scenario that is effectively over in an hour.
Yeah. That's always a pain. Thanks.
Another great video, recently loaded up on the last KS for Caen (to get the Canadians) and also picking up BRO, Solo and Omaha. Looking forward to this as I could not find the first iteration and expansions at a decent prices so excited to finally get most of the key pieces. Regards
Thanks!
A buddy and I used to play this one but he isn't available for play right now so I am glad the solitaire rules came along. I am hoping they will translate over well to the Hero of Black Reach (40K version....space marines and orks).
The Warhammer version looks interesting.
Company's folded. Wanted this game but also solo module. Latter unavailable, so forget it!
Yeah. Too bad.
Good series of games
Indeed.
As someone who has been eying this for a while, but also already owns Memoir 44 and Undaunted, I struggle to decide if I should buy. What are your thoughts on that? Is this different enough?
There is a lot more depth here as a "wargame" than either of those titles. I love both Memoir '44 and Undaunted, (in fact, as a "game" I prefer Undaunted), but as a tactical wargame experience, this one bests the other two.
@@TheDiscriminatingGamer thank you. I just saw, that there is an app version of HoN. With what you said, I think I’ll go for that.
Hey Cody, I'm considering buying a whole bunch of HoN stuff. Wondering if you've tried the solo mode expansion yet and your thoughts?
I haven't yet. I actually gave my HoN stuff to my buddy, since he liked it more than I did and I am running out of room.
Yes Khody, but this is hardly an expansion,,,i was hoping for something more imaginative like Civilians unter fuer , or mebe well there's lots to choose frm , ps watching again 👍
I’m sorry I failed you.
@@TheDiscriminatingGamer no I don't consider this a fail ,,,, a very good and fair review, , not your fault , it's just I've decided to sink a lot of time to this engine as it sets up quickly, more time to play , good storage solutions , hundreds of scenarios, DYO, black reach compatible , guardians n dust ,if U can get it still, oh and some of the rules for these new games require a pill and a psychology degree just to set up blah blah , ha thanks
Nice review as always. 😉👍
Danke!
@@TheDiscriminatingGamer Bitte .
This one or Undaunted?
I prefer Undaunted generally, but they are both very different kinds of games mechanically.
Are you based out Las Vegas?
Nope. Idaho.
@@TheDiscriminatingGamer LOL...I saw the fountains at the end of the video and thought 🤔
at least we read books...
Good...
Off topic: Does anyone know of a game (past or coming up) to simulate the current war in Ukraine? It seems most games that are close are based on the end of the Cold War.
Not as such - still pretty recent news. Although Phalanx did to Europe Divided (by David Thompson of Undaunted Normandy fame). It centers on roughly the period of 1990-2019. Similar in many respects to Twilight Struggle.
@@TheDiscriminatingGamer Cool! Pretty cheap on Amazon, $43 with tax, arriving tomorrow! Thank you. Also looking into World War III Team Yankee but am not too hip on 15mm....I would rather keep it to chit games or maybe 6mm.
Europe Divided is definitely a good recommendation
This or Combat Commander?
They play very differently. I'd have to think about it.
HoN is *not* a serious combat game. Combat Commander is. HoN is a cinematic treatment of combat which is why the personality cards are caricatures of war movie actors. For instance, one scenario from the original HoN (BRO is an update) is to "rescue" the general's dog but he runs away from anyone who shoots!
This. There are a lot of ww2 tactical games out there and after a while I soured on Combat Commander and sold it. I've bought and still enjoy the ww1 version called Great War Commander though. HoN and its "siblings" are all great fun. Never had a dull game of any of them. Cody's right about the rules and mechanics taking a while to settle in but it's all solvable. "Heroes" and the Commands & colours systems are the two I'm most comfortable setting up for both wargamers and non wargamers knowing they'll have a great time.
I'd also argue Combat Commander isn't that serious either. ASL is, but I'd also say that Advanced Squad Leader is not a game but a lifestyle choice.
@@picton101 why soured on CC?
Have stupid jokes- idk if they work-
Why did Germany lose ww2?
They had Fuhrer leaders
I had a *bulging* pile of Ardenne jokes but froze up on stage.
What do Nazis use to get flies out of their houses?
Fly Swat-stikas
What do Nazis eat for breakfast?
Lufftewaffles and Panzercakes
Fantastic! Those Nazis were rubbish!
