I've seen this video countless times, and the first rep is still the damnedest thing I've ever seen. 1000lbs moving with such speed is unreal, even 20 years after the fact.
Me too. I've seen this so many fucking times it's not even funny. Along with his other interviews. Capt Kirk is definitely the go-to-guy to get some adrenaline heading into the gym.
That first rep would have made an awesome video on its own. The energy in that room when he refuses to rack it, and drops down a second time is glorious
Now that is a real competition squat, walk it out, confirm it with a second rep, yell louder than the crowd that its your kill, way below depth, walk it back in......out-standing!
Bergred exactly, this is mid 90s lifting at its finest, laughable liftjng gear, walked out and set up squats, unquestionable depth and no fucking bullshit "beast mode" or "alpha" shit talking
No disrespect to anyone, but this is the greatest squat video on youtube. Great legal depth, good form, and the way he grinded the second rep is just plain legendary.
Yup, that lift was indeed genuine. I was the one taping the lift- it was deep and it was easy. Lifting with Kirk was a thrill, and I miss it. Watching him train & compete was witnessing 'athletic arrogance' in action. I was witness to it that day at Maryland Athletic Club, and again when he squatted 1003 at the Sr Nationals in Baton Rouge. It's funny what time does to your memory. I remember that day in the gym like it was yesterday, but I could've sworn the weight was 1005.
I believe this is the most impressive squat feat I've seen. The equipment he has is nothing compared to nowadays. Absolutely Incredible. But haters still gon' hate
awesome video, Captain Kirk is the man! I used to work out at the MARYLAND ATHLETIC CLUB, I remember this day I was in the back room where the TV was, the stretch room. People from all over came out for this day. Ian the owner is an awesome guy and his gym was great. When I was going to Paint Branch and Montgomery me and my friend Will Hill use to workout there. I remember one day after Kirk's training when he use to get nose bleeds, intense.
After some of the stuff I have seen on You Tube - partial squats, partial presses, incline presses passing for "military presses", etc, this guy is for real a deep- I mean really deep-- full squatter. Very impressive, very remarkable.
it would have seriously been amazing to even witness this squat set in person.... i really feel like sometimes i was born in the wrong time period, and i think im right!
sleepingtube i was squatting 90° 200kg, dropped to 130kg and started to full squat, 1 month later my knees were fucked up. After years squatting 90° I think my body cant handle the full movement
@@Rafael-oq9vu Why did you squat to below parallel? Mark Rippetoe writes in his book, Starting Strength, that for the squat mechanics, once you go past parallel (or thereabouts), your low back loses its extension (so-called "butt wink") and the tension on hamstring slackens. I do not think an individual is suppose to squat (loaded) so far below parallel without an active (i.e., rounded) lower back. If they do squat that far, then it should be unloaded.
@@PearsAreOkay After these 2 years i had to stop working out due to some personal problems, but just started again in august, and now im doing a2g squats @160kg without knee problems. Ik about this book and the reason i do below parallel squats is bc after watching some oly lifters squatting i thought this was the most aesthetic way to squat lmao. Now im just used to it, dont know if i should change my form again tho.
@SquatDeadPress AND when you hit serious weight like that you want to embrace it. I love it when I hit a new PR on the squat or DL, then I hold it for a few extra seconds before racking the weight or putting it down to stay in that moment of victory. Kirk is the best squatter EVER!
True story: Kirk, along with a few other friends from MD Athletic Club, where this was filmed, were at my house recently. I asked Kirk "Hey man, want a beer?" "Sure." I handed him a beer. When he went to take it, I tightened my grip & said "I WANNA HOLD IT! i WANNA HOLD IT! OK, TAKE IT!" Everyone laughed but Kirk. He just had a sheepish grin on his face.
Amazing that he did that off a pair of squat stands, no safety bars, power rack, cage, nothin'! But if he would have missed it totally those spotters would have never been able to save him from a near fatal accident. They would have grabbed the bar and pulled it unevenly and might have killed Kirk. That's a half ton, bro!
"I wanna hold it! i wanna hold it!!!" and everyone shuts the fuck up cause its more apparent now, than ever before, that this man is a bit nuts. i envy him. Kirk Karwoski is a seriously fucking strong, manly man.

I think you lied when you said, "everything you just said I was thinking the same thing."
One thing missing....telling the crowd to piss-off it is your bar and you will re-rack it yourself.

when he wants to hold it, he holds it.

Did Lyle McDonald commenting on Duffin's high triple with 1001 lead you here?
