Not sure if this was mentioned yet, but to answer your unasked question about the Rhythm Guitarist being new to the guitar, here's a brief history of Band-Maid:
Miku is the name of the Rhythm Guitarist. She's also the creator of the band. From Wiki: "Singer/guitarist Miku Kobato, formerly an employee of a Japanese maid café, envisioned forming a band that juxtaposed the maid image with rock music". So, in 2013 she went on to recruit Kanami (lead guitarist), who in turn knew Akane (drummer) and got her on board. Akane suggested they get Misa (bassist), who she knew from music school. At this point, the band was 4 strong, with Miku as the vocalist since, at the time, she hadn't started playing guitar yet. They held their first live performance as a 4 piece, with Miku on vocals. After that show, Miku felt her voice didn't match what they wanted as a band, so they held auditions for a lead singer, which is where they found Saiki. Miku decided to pick up the guitar and be rhythm guitarist/backup vocals. So, she started playing guitar in late 2013 AFTER forming the band, getting lessons from Kanami.
If you watch their first music video "Thrill" from 2014, you'll notice the camera never really shows Miku playing the guitar. She's just kind of holding it most of the time.
Just imagine being a total newbie to guitar, and playing alongside these other amazing musicians, on stage. It must have been massive pressure on herself to learn, so not to let the band she created down.

Miku was not delegated to rhythm guitar. She decided her voice wasn't really up to singing lead full time. But she had always envisioned Dual Vocals. So she dropped back to the Baking Vocal position, and took up the guitar as taught by Kanami. There is also an acoustic LIVE version of this song. But I would show him 'Domination' LIVE 2020 either first, or immediately after it.

You might be surprised to know that Japan has the second largest music industry in the world after the US. Its just that on top of a language barrier, they also weren't promoted much outside, not even through digital/online means including the likes of youtube. Infact they have very strict copyright laws that even bans phones in concerts there and only in the recent few years have they started officially releasing their music online.
The rock/metal scene is esp. huge. And while the rest of the world sees frontwomen in rock as a novelty, all female bands have been a thing there since the early 1980s.
Also, thanks to their impressive concert culture many western artists and bands have managed to remain afloat through the years owing partly to the huge concerts they get to do there frequently.
With their compulsory music education and tendency to be workaholics and perfectionist in their craft, what you get is a huge number of insanely gifted, professionally trained musicians flooding one amazing band after the other.
And only the most ambitious and finest bands get filtered out from these already incredible ones, to international music fans like us.
I dare you to pick anyone from below and conclude that they are shit 😏
Here are some of my fav Japanese bands who are also massively successful, ranging from lighter punkrock to heavier power/heavy/doom metal & metalcore

There is a huge difference between Band-Maid and all the others many of whom are quite good. Band-Maid is the only self made band of the lot. The only one. All of the others are corporate creations and the product of some suit in an office and put together through the idol process. Not Band-Maid. And because of that Band-Maid is beholden to no one but their fans. Not to mention they write, perform and arrange their own music. Again, that is not true for any of the others. Doesn't mean they are bad because l have Asterism, Lovebites, Scandal and BiSH on my playlist. What it means is none of the others are near as talented as Band-Maid is. Regards.

Robert BM is currently one of my fav, not just female, not Japanese, not even rock, but overall fav Band of all times, bar none. But having that, I’ll still have to absolutely disagree with your comment, as its not even factually correct.
I’m fine with elevating your favs upto the highest pedestal but do you really have to knock on other artists just to make yours seem better?
Forget about “the lot” but even amongst the few I listed here, most of them are formed by themselves and wrote their own songs their whole career, which btw are much longer and bigger than BM’s.
Infact if i have to start counting numbers BM released only 6 albums so far and regardless of the reasons, they only wrote their own stuff starting from ‘Alone’ in their 3rd album. In comparison bands like OOR, l’arc en ciel etc, have pretty much written everything since the very start. Heck even scandal that you yourself mentioned does it and started their band from the streets.
Did BM start from the streets? No. Did they form as highschool students without any outside help? No
You ought to be aware that Miku was already in touch with the label when she first recruited Kanami. So while they are ofcourse not a commercial creation but strictly speaking they are much less ‘self-made’ compared to many of them who were highschool dropouts and started playing from the streets. BM’s first gig was already arranged for them by the label.
Even musically speaking, there are many, some among their peers alone who are possibly much more skilled. Are the power trio Misa, Kanami and Akane at the same technical level as Koga (dollsboxx), Saki (mary’s blood) and Nao (MTH), I doubt it.
Imo the main advantage BM has, is their overall skill level, their chemistry and the songwriting genius that is Kanami. Their sound is also much more ‘international’ and they are great at walking the fine line between sounding ‘mainstream’ but also having enough creativity and uniqueness in their sound to clearly place them head and shoulders above most.
I would gladly pick Kanami over Santana himself even if my life happened to depend on the song they wrote next but is she at the same caliber as him? probably not yet, even though the fan in me would have traded for anything to convince myself otherwise.
Its great to express support for your fav artists but at the very least, check your facts first before embarrassing the rest of us fellow fans. I for one, am not fond of revealing my fav artist’s ‘dirty laundry’ just to save myself from my own conscience, like I had to do here.

Without speaking Japanese, this version seems filled with anger and bitterness with Saiki spitting out the words. The acoustic version she seems to sing with sorrow and remorse. But reading the translated lyrics, definitely not a happy song. I don't know if Band-Maid is played on the radio in Japan but Miku has said in an interview and they know 70% of their fans are OUTSIDE of Japan.

I hope that sounded better and was playing at the right speed in your headphones, because it wasn't in the video. And the audio was to the studio version. Nevertheless, glad you guys got to hear and react to it. It's a great song. Miku started learning guitar in late 2013 and was playing live shows within a year to 18 months if I understand correctly. She's gotten SO much better since. You are one of only a few reactors that has actually mentioned how much practice it takes to play and sing at the same time, and Miku does it in every live performance. She practiced a LOT to get where she's at today. Her work ethic is insane, but she also had a great teacher.

Another nice reaction for Band-Maid. And FYI, the rythm guitarist is Miku Kobato. She is the founder of Band-Maid, and the person who wrote almost the lyrics of the songs. Before Band-Maid, she has started as an idol member (you can search "lil cumin" to know her before) and then an employee of a Japanese maid cafe, envisioned forming a rock band with maid image. Then Miku recruited Kanami (lead guitarist) after an Internet search. Kanami had performed as a singer-songwriter and suggested her occasional backing drummer Akane (the drummer; the band leader) for the new band. Then Akane suggested Misa (the bassist), with whom she had attended music school. Because Miku (the rythm guitarist) know that her voice wasn't strong enough for their songs, then she invited Saiki (the lead vocalist) from an audition, or maybe deceived her (Saiki) to join the band after Saiki (the vocalist) listened to some of their songs and Miku tell her that the band has a concept with cute outfit (even though Saiki just know that she has to wear a maid outfit after join the band, but there's no way out because the next day they have to perform for the first time. Lol). and that's how Band-Maid has formed.
And for Miku (the rythm guitarist), she was forced to learn guitar by Kanami (the lead guitarist), because with two guitarists it would be better for the band and give more rock vibe for their songs too. And now you see how she developed to be a good rythm guitarist for the band. Maybe she wasn't the most talented in instrument for the band, but she is the talented person for entertaining people when the band in a live stage. And she is the 'heart' of the band. The person who maybe didn't know anything about rock music, and now she has formed one of the best female rock bands in the world. (Edit: and now she has formed the best female rock band in the world). Big respect to her and Band-Maid for living up rock music for the world.

  • @johnryan5147
    @johnryan5147 4 года назад +1

Miku started with I am going to buy a guitar and start a rock band. All she had was a stack of song lyrics that she had written as she writes all the lyrics Kanami writes all the music and as she has taught Miku how to play. There is another version of this song done with Acoustic performed by Kanami and Saki, you should check it out if you can find it. Miku is turning out to be a good player and Kanami said a year ago that at some time she will do a song with Kanami on the piano with Miku on the guitar. Miku is considered on of the mest lyricists in Japan, and Kanami is just genius.

The lyric is sad and a bitter dark...

    BAND-MAID - Puzzle
    Lyrics: Miku Kobato
    Song: BAND-MAID
    Translator: Kafka
When you said “Nice to meet you.”,
It’s like hearing a puzzle piece fell into place.
    Although I certainly don’t remember
    but that’s fine with me.
You’ve given my light a place,
    Amidst the melancholic darkness.
Don’t ever lose that innocent smile,
Even if my love will render futile.
I don’t mind how you prioritize me.
    Hey…those are just lies.
    I can’t see nor know,
    All I feel is pain.
But I long for the truth,
So I can’t just resist it.
    Just for the meantime,
    Go and get encroached.
There’s no stopping once I voice out
    Knowing that, you embraced her.
It won’t hurt for you two to go outside.
    That’s only my wish.
    Like sweetly melting candy,
    Someday you’ll disappear, too.
Your sneaky stare and scent will only remain.
    but that’s fine with me.
    On this lonesome night,
I wonder where are you and what’re you doing?
The harder I think about it, the more I can’t sleep.
    I can’t say that’s selfish,
Since such a good girl is waiting for you.
The answer should obvious by now.
I can’t do it or even say it,
    Actually I know
    That holding isn’t permitted.
    But you softly touched me
With your finger, no doubt about it.
I felt love along with it,
So don’t do things like apologize.
Do enchant me and I will avert my eyes.
I’m addicted to this incurable wound as it deepens more.
    I’m still falling for you.
    Useless lighters,
    The lined up glasses,
    The new clothes,
Don’t cry, those are your remnants.
I can’t see the end to it,
All I want is to dream of you.
    Will I ever wake up?
Don’t cry, let me believe in them.
    I can’t see nor know,
    All I feel is pain.
But I long for the truth,
So I can’t just resist it.
    Just for the meantime,
    Go and get encroached.
There’s no stopping once I voice out
    Knowing that, you embraced her.
It won’t hurt for you two to go outside.
    That’s only my wish.
    The puzzle is crumbling,
It’s like the memories won’t go away.
    My eyes are still closed.
    I’m still falling for you.

Miku who is the founder of Band-Maid formed the band around 2013, she found Kanami thru the internet, Kanami who knew Akane (she would be her go to girl for drums) knew of a Bass player name Misa, both knew each other because they’ve attended music school together, those two are best friends! When they got together Miku had decided that her voice was as strong enough for the direction of music they wanted to go so they auditioned for a lead singer, they found Saiki!!! Miku had stated she liked her voice in a interview! The funny thing is that Miku didn’t tell Saiki about wearing a maid outfit, she thought Saiki would say no way and not join until their first gig!! During the MV for Thrill, Miku didn’t know how to play until she got with Kanami and learned how to play! She’s still Kanami’s student

Years ago they told a record company, from now on we call the shots, we play what we create. The Song, ALONE was the first one after they laid down the law on the executives. The original video has been shortened but what they did was they walked into the studio, picked up their gear, took their places and laid down ALONE on the FIRST TAKE and then left. Talk about a drop the mic performance. Now it is just edited down to the song that cut out about a minute of walk in and walk out. But is is powerful and they have been on a roll since and rock is a lot better for it.

Miku learned how to play guitar after she formed the band. Kanami is her teacher. After she was fired from Lil Cumin, a three girl JPOP creation, she went to work at Maid Cafés and decided to form a rock band based on the Maid Cafés concept. At that time she did not know who would be in the band besides Akane and she couldn't play any musical instrument. And that didn't stop her one second. Miku's best guitar playing to date is the recent live version of Freedom from last Valentines Day. She cranks out those sixteenths so hard she winds up falling down on her butt.

7:12 Yes, Miku (rhythm guitar) was originally the lead vocals. It was decided she didn't have the power in her voice to fit with what they wanted to do. When she was replaced by Saiki, the band told Miku she had to learn guitar. There is some rare old footage where you'll hear Miku playing horribly.
9:29 Yes, they drop-D tune for several songs and add a half-step detuning on some using a detuning pedal, which I hate. It makes the guitar have a slight synth sound to it. It also makes the bassist job much more difficult, since she does not have the capability to detune. Misa (bass) will have to play in C# while the guitars are playing in D.

Great reaction and agree, rock in the US is chocked off by pop, radio is pretty much dead as well. The guitarist you're thinking about is Marty Friedman, he moved to Japan in 2003 and is still there. He said he moved there because of the dynamic rock/metal scene that was there. He's had his own TV show for a couple of years. He also praised Babymetal in an interview for their musical direction and talent and has worked with one of the Babymetal guitarist, Leda Cygnus for a while.

I think the difference between Japan and the West when it comes to music is bands seem to be able to jump around genres on a single record without too much fan backlash. Also they don't seem to be afraid to create a side project if they don't think the fans will accept the music change or the just want to work with different people there seems to be a mad number of bands that share members whilst all remaining active to some extent. In the West there seems to be this entitlement issue where fans expect to keep getting their favourite sounds out of the bands which stagnates the creativity and excitement in the end.
Take SCANDAL as an example songs pop to rock via punk and several other sounds on the way.

It's hard to find a good version as the band has not released it themselves. This is from 24-11-2017 and it was a bonus release with their world domination album. It was a 25 song show but the bluray is edited down to about 15 songs. Yes it looks like something else has been added or removed as the audience sound has been scrubbed out.

Great reaction, I love the insight I get from you and your brother... It is in the comments below but just so you know the band didn't relegate Miku from lead singer to backup singer, Miku relegated herself, Miku formed the band and writes most of the lyrics. I would enjoy if you would have your brother listen to the live version of Domination , ruclips.net/video/QbyQCJn6rYg/видео.html , Saki, the lead singer, had polyps removed from her vocal cords I think around 2017, from what I hear her range is actually better now and her voice is stronger, and that shows up some in the Domination live video. I think it would be interesting to get your reaction to that video and comments on her vocals. I would think that vocal cord surgery for a lead singer could have terrible results, I don't know how common that is... My understanding is prior to surgery and recovery Band Maid incorporated songs and entertainment written for Miku to give Saki a break to rest her voice during some of their concert performances...

This song is about unrequited love and the inability to accept that the other party loves someone else. You can see it all over Saiki's face and, at least live, in her sound that this is no happy song.
It's a shame they continue to take down the live version of the song, that one's on a completely different level in my eyes than the studio version, which is already awesome.
Musicians don't really get recognition in Japan if you're not doing pop music. Even if there's elements of it in the music. Band-Maid, BABYMETAL, Unlucky Morpheus, Wagakki Band, etc, you name it, don't really get into the top tier of the ORICON charts. I think BABYMETAL 5th or 6th in the Japanese charts with their Metal Galaxy Album, which was #1 on the US Rock Billboard charts. The idol pop culture is so prevalent because it's just the way you break into the entertainment business as a female and just because of the sheer amount of different idol groups and pop singers there's not really a place for anything else in their music industry.

You're quite far off about the rhythm guitarist. You're correct that she hasn't played long, but everything else you said is a twisted version of reality. She writes almost all the lyrics, she writes most of the music with Kanami (even though Wikipedia says different, in interviews they've said this), she _formed the band_, and she was the one who thought they needed a better main vocalist than her. She wasn't "relegated" or "delegated" to rhythm guitar. Also in live shows she is the main driving force and presence on the stage, and she interacts with the crowd between the songs, at length, with incredible charm, and fantastically terrible spoken English. She is the actual front person of Band-Maid. It just doesn't look that way to you.
