      @@vanizorc I don't think he is kidding. I've seen videos online about them killing livestock animals as well. They literally will kill things like cattle, lamb, and other farm animals with ease. They gang up so fast on the animal and the animals don't have any means of brushing them off like humans can. So the ants just have at the animals unless the animal can run away freely or get into a body of water to get them off.

    The details about the farmers and village living harmoniously with the ants was the best part of this, thank you for not taking the cheap lazy route of fearmongering. I'm glad such an interesting and formidable species can be beneficial! If they are anything like wasps, they probably recognize the farmers and know to wait nearby.

    This symbiotic relationship actually works. In my village we have learned to direct these ants to parts of the house that is infested with pests and rodents etc.
    They usually migrate like 3/4 times annually. This happens during the night, we read their seasons and prepare for them. By morning time the entire hut/house is cleared out with evidence of useful destruction left behind and the ants moved on without a fuss.

    Still remember when I was a kid and saw ants floating across the water of a drainage ditch on a "human raft" so to speak. I was probably twelve or so at the time, was before I had seen documentaries with that sort of thing, kind of what got me to watching them actually. I just thought that was so unique and fascinating, to this day I love a good ant/insect documentary.

    I like how the people in that village coexist with the ants and help eachother in some ways like getting rid of pests in their house and farms and the ants benefit from it cause they get to feed their colony, but at the same time the people and the ants hate eachother.

    I like how the myth is dispelled right after it's spoken. A lot of insects, especially ones that live in colonies or hives, don't pick fights that they don't have to. There's always a reason they attack if it's against a giant, and it's almost always defense.

      Maybe they haven't seen a western documentary meant to sensationalize every little thing in the "dark continent" and blow every concern way out of proportion for ratings. Maybe they don't buy into the "boogeyman factor" for every natural normal little thing in Africa. Maybe they aren't all that put out by some ants eating bugs in the yard.

      It's not like they do more than just bite. You want to see ants that you can't do this with? Bull-ants (jumping jacks is another name for them) don't bite-they sting. The venom in their sting causes anaphylaxis in about 3% of humans-which will kill them. These driver ants seem like great lil buddies compare to them.

In one episode he was grounded and as part of the punishment his parents removed the stairs connecting the basement to the house until the sentence was over.

      If you never wear shoes your feet adapt to the terrain you walk on. As a child we could run on any surface barefoot. Only glass, metal and sometimes wood could penetrate/cut our feet. Green ant bites were tickles on our feet lol. City living makes us soft and resistant to almost nothing. Rural life makes you resistant to a lot of diseases etc city folk cannot handle without a visit to the doctors.

      I once watched a TV documentary about ants, in which an army of ants encountered a dilemma where they needed to cross a cavity, so they used their teeth to cut a single blade of grass, carried it over and laid it across the cavity to form a bridge.

      It depends about the species of ants, of course native of the region ants are harmless and usefull for humans, but when we talk about invasive species of ants like yellow crazy ants or fireants that can exterminate whatever they encounter it is not good.
      They attack and kill other useful insects like bees, spiders and small reptiles.
