In a first for railway restoration, this series takes four of the most iconic carriages ever to run on the railways and brings them back to their former glory. Teams of world-class restoration experts each restore a different carriage from a different era, spanning 100 years of railway travel including one of only two surviving Royal coaches used by Queen Victoria in 1887 and a once-glamorous 1960 Pullman dining car.
Presented by historian Peter Snow, viewers follow the ups and downs of each restoration while TV presenter Henry Cole explores what it was like to be a passenger in each era of rail travel.

The host's glee when the train starts moving shows the four-year-old enthusiast inside!
Watching this whole series, has left me not only with a sense of admiration for the restoration teams of the four different pieces of history, but a desire to someday travel from Canada to Llangollen Steam Railway and experience these very historic pieces of 100 years of rail travel for myself.
i loved watching this series when it was on tv but i sadly never got to see the last episode until now
I really would've liked to see Queen Elizabeth invited to ride as the first passenger on the Queen Victoria car.
Me to
She may have been - never know....
Really? My veneration vanished in the face of her attitude toward Dianna. She didn't even think making the funeral national mattered. Blair (like him or not) stepped in and sorted her out over that.
@@984francis I think a generalization like that can be......tricky, maybe is the word? Many thought as you, I know, but others seemed to give her some benefit of the doubt. Remember too, there's "Protocol" - many things that regular people thought should be done, such as lowering the royal standard to half-mast, weren't done because protocol didn't call for them, and at least at first, she didn't deviate, at least at first.
@@984francis Never understood anyone's fascination with her. I grew up with the Charles & Diana saga. I found it all terribly annoying. Let's face it the match was bad Charles didn't love her and neither did she really love Charles. Diana slept with countless men at least Charles slept with the one he always loved.
Very enjoyable series. To all the people who made it all possible well done!
After seeing the stars of restoration, it reminded of a coach in dire need of attention I saw some years back. When I first visited Steamtown in Scranton Pennsylvania, they had just opened. There sat a Great Western coach in its cream and chocolate livery. It had come over for exhibition with the King George V locomotive. The same time the locomotive received it's bell, 1927. The locomotive did return home, but not this coach. The coach was stored in an Army storage lot for more years, the weather and vandals making things worse for the coach. Hopefully it has not been scrapped. For it would be a great project for the talent in the show.
Right. Someone should finance its return to UK.
I'm North American and have been somewhat jaded by my personal experience. I'm also a model engineer ( 7.5 gauge and G gauge ). Thank you for providing the real context for my shared obsession with all railway fans. Beautiful job people and a lovely distraction from our current pandemic times. Christmas Day 2020
Excellent: my definition of a Trade- Person, Part Technician, Part Engineer, Part Artist. We have to interest our future Trade People in this.
While the UK seems to be very devoted to preserving its historic railroads, here in the USA, no one seems to care, what a shame!! Thank you for saving such important touchstones of railroading history and bringing then back to life and putting them back running the rails!!
We have a few Railroad Preservation groups around one is in North Judson Indiana
Those that do all too often seem not to care about the coaches, just steam locos. Strasburg, Colebrookdale, and Colorado’s Durango & Silverton and Cumbres & Toltec do, as well as a few others, but as a whole, carriages hardly ever seem to get such love.
The people who do the restorations are true artists. You can tell how much they love the work they do and how it really is a labor of love for them.
An amazing accomplishment. I'm 68 and sitting on my couch and look at what this guy has done. You can't help being impressed.
Very good, thanks.
Thanks this is beautiful wow!!!
As an American, I'm so pleased to see that there are so many heritage lines in Britain. Over here, we have a few, but "rails to trails" seems to be the sad end for many of our short lines. And I do like these hiking expeditions, but still.....
Absolutely fantastic series showcasing priceless history. A true joy to watch.
Fabulous series,thank you!
GREAT...GREAT.....
I love this show! I always loved trains, and I am SO SO happy that this exists!
Love from America. I wish you guys came back... we had a lot of American railways here too.
Beautiful restoration.
Excellent documentation.
Thanks for the ride.
i watched this series because it made my think of my grandfather, one of them worked the rails and tended trains and the other was in love with them. they would talk for hours about trains. i miss them, this series made me smile thinking how much they would of loved this!!!! well done!!!
The four car restoration videos EXCELLENT!
The Canadian Pacific Railway model train in the opening scene is very special for me! Comment to follow.
Car restoration brings back fond memories for me! Countless hours of volunteer interior restoration on a TPO(RPO). & Baggage car.
The entire narrow gauge railway in my province was closed down in 1988
August 1981 marked the centennial of starting construction on our railway. At that time I was a member of a transportation historical society.
Two years earlier Terra Transport a division of Canadian National invited the society to form a joint planning committee for this special event. I was selected as one of several members representing the society on the joint committee
The RPO car VERY SPECIAL for me ! My late father was a mail clerk on the car. As a kid he hide me several times on board while on the road.
I was lucky to travel in both directions for the week long event in the railways manager's private car Terra Nova 2.
In October 1985 accepted Canadian pacific Railway special quest invitation on behalf of the society for the centennial of the driving of the last spike November 07 1985 at Craigellachie British Columbia. The lone invitation from the four Atlantic provinces.
Rare events . Twice in a lifetime !

the greatest restoration?
4014.
took 6 years.
I have seen her twice since she has been running. well worth the visit to see her. (1309 is up and running too, so see her too)
Now they just need a few more passenger cars some sleeping cars and a restord rail line from the very North of Scotland all the way down to the southern tip of Italy that would be one hell of a trip.
They could pull it through the tunnel between England and France with a Diesel
27:14 and pause
All this brilliant work on the coaches. And they forgot to include lights in the kitchen. Oops! With those mirror finished panels, that must get quite confusing after dark!
Will there be more of these?
Me and my partner in crime...?. I thought the Brits knew how to speak the Queen's English... Try. My partner in crime and I... Me is not a subject and it's rude to put yourself first. Other than the bad grammar, it's a great and interesting show!
I think we could've left queen Victoria at the station
Right? Creepy.
This is Jan 2021 what is the future for this consist ?
As I understand each returned home. The IWSR has their 4 wheeler in service with their half dozen others. The NER Composite however was put up for sale if I recall when it’s owner (the railway chairman) retired.
@@jacobwoods8738 Thank you for the information.
@@jacobwoods8738 Thank you.
Peter seems a bit rude doesn't he?
Agree. Typical ex military talking down to his minions and initially always in a negative way. I wish he would stop stating the blindingly obvious.
What's the point of a restoration video if you don't show any of the restoration?
It was a TV series. Search RUclips for the first four episodes.
@@JPSE57 I watched 2 episodes and didn't see much restoration work.
@@JPSE57 ok
Brilliant! Enjoyed every minute of this series!
