Great Rail Restorations
Канада
Добавлен 28 янв 2020
In a first for railway restoration, this series takes four of the most iconic carriages ever to run on the railways and brings them back to their former glory. Teams of world-class restoration experts each restore a different carriage from a different era, spanning 100 years of railway travel including one of only two surviving Royal coaches used by Queen Victoria in 1887 and a once-glamorous 1960 Pullman dining car.
Presented by historian Peter Snow, viewers follow the ups and downs of each restoration while TV presenter Henry Cole explores what it was like to be a passenger in each era of rail travel.

Luxury and glamour are at the heart of this episode, as we jump forward 100 years to 1960. The restoration project is a rusting and tired Pullman dining car, one of the very last batch to be made in Britain. This holiday-themed episode is set at the Isle of Wight Steam Railway, restoring an enchanting wooden carriage from the very dawn of the railway age - 1864. In its heyday, it carried Victorian holidaymakers to the posh seaside resorts on the Isle of Wight, but it was scrapped in 1920 and converted in to a holiday chalet. The series starts in the stunning Vale of Llangollen in North Wales, where an incredibly passionate team of restorers from the Llangollen railway take on the challenge of brining a dilapidated 1912 Brake Composite carriage back to life. It was designed by the great Sir Nigel Gresley - who went on to build The Flying Scotsman. Subscribe to Great Rail Restorations Here: bit.ly/36ydFof Watch more ...
I enjoyed every moment of this series. Each carriage had a dedicated, highly skilled group of craftsmen accomplishing that which seemed impossible in the time frame they were given. I wish I lived in England and could see the train in person.
In the USA, there has been a resurgence to revive our own old iron horses from their slumber. A bit of a sad part is that many have been converted to oil burners and not say one of the more traditional fuels such as coal.
This is why we preserve history!
I would like to know who paid for this project? Did you use Heritage Lottery funds? TM retired who loves trains
Outstanding. Very moving.
I am loving your channel and vids in Western Australia 🇦🇺
My wish is to ride a train line known for long rides before I go. I’m a book nut and trains were in most of them. I grew up hearing train whistle when they came through town. I’ve been teased that I’ve been on a plane and same person has been on train. Granted we both laugh that both of us traveled the way each other wanted.
22:50 I just noticed that Rickety and Clarabel make a cameo in this episode.
Absolutely fantastic series showcasing priceless history. A true joy to watch.
I love this show! I always loved trains, and I am SO SO happy that this exists! Love from America. I wish you guys came back... we had a lot of American railways here too.
You should do one for albania They are rennovating the durres tirana train by a italian company its gonna be 38 billion euros it will be amazing!
How come you and all others forget about Richard Trevithick who invented the first high-pressure steam engine and the first operational steam locomotive at the turn of the 19th century? 'nuf sed.
He's overrated
Thank-you for sharing this. Queen Victoria rode in this carriage on the rail line at the bottom of my garden (a few ;o) years before I owned the house).
Fabulous series,thank you!
Will there be more of these?
A gentlemen with full of passion by how much he love train as a hobby to making life dream a reality.
Me and my partner in crime...?. I thought the Brits knew how to speak the Queen's English... Try. My partner in crime and I... Me is not a subject and it's rude to put yourself first. Other than the bad grammar, it's a great and interesting show!
Nice restoration but I wish they would have trashed the 1970s seating and gone back to its original style seating. Those seats while beautifully upholstered are just absolutely ugly in shape and style.
Very enjoyable , loved watching this series, Thanks.
The work is so beautiful. I love seeing things put back to their original glory.
An amazing accomplishment. I'm 68 and sitting on my couch and look at what this guy has done. You can't help being impressed.
Brilliant! Enjoyed every minute of this series!
The four car restoration videos EXCELLENT! The Canadian Pacific Railway model train in the opening scene is very special for me! Comment to follow. Car restoration brings back fond memories for me! Countless hours of volunteer interior restoration on a TPO(RPO). & Baggage car. The entire narrow gauge railway in my province was closed down in 1988 August 1981 marked the centennial of starting construction on our railway. At that time I was a member of a transportation historical society. Two years earlier Terra Transport a division of Canadian National invited the society to form a joint planning committee for this special event. I was selected as one of several members representing the society on the joint committee The RPO car VERY SPECIAL for me ! My late father was a mail clerk on the car. As a kid he hide me several times on board while on the road. I was lucky to travel in both directions for the week long event in the railways manager's private car Terra Nova 2. In October 1985 accepted Canadian pacific Railway special quest invitation on behalf of the society for the centennial of the driving of the last spike November 07 1985 at Craigellachie British Columbia. The lone invitation from the four Atlantic provinces. Rare events . Twice in a lifetime !
what a brilliant film loved every minute of it
Very good, thanks.
As an American, I'm so pleased to see that there are so many heritage lines in Britain. Over here, we have a few, but "rails to trails" seems to be the sad end for many of our short lines. And I do like these hiking expeditions, but still.....
brilliant wonderful job
Great project.. ..even if Welsh people will cringe often.
Loved the video thanks I wish I was skilled craftsman beautiful what these people have achieved well done everyone very best wishes to you all.
i watched this series because it made my think of my grandfather, one of them worked the rails and tended trains and the other was in love with them. they would talk for hours about trains. i miss them, this series made me smile thinking how much they would of loved this!!!! well done!!!
What a beautiful job of restoration, and a wonderful job of telling the story. The video was a delight.
GREAT...GREAT.....
There’s still some Pullmans left to buy in the USA!
Now they just need a few more passenger cars some sleeping cars and a restord rail line from the very North of Scotland all the way down to the southern tip of Italy that would be one hell of a trip.
They could pull it through the tunnel between England and France with a Diesel
All this brilliant work on the coaches. And they forgot to include lights in the kitchen. Oops! With those mirror finished panels, that must get quite confusing after dark!
Where are we going to find a toilet for Queen Victoria's railway carriage ? Lol ebay where else 🤷♂️!
27:14 and pause
The people who do the restorations are true artists. You can tell how much they love the work they do and how it really is a labor of love for them.
Excellent: my definition of a Trade- Person, Part Technician, Part Engineer, Part Artist. We have to interest our future Trade People in this.
Magnificent family and team effort. I have to get back to the UK and book this carriage.
I have just discovered this series and enjoying it immensely. This episode reminded me of our family travels in the 50's and early 60's, mother developed the method of determining the relative age of a British Rail sandwich by how big the curve of the bread at the cut edges where. The greater the curve the older the sandwich. We still apply this BRS standard to all modern day mass produced sandwich's. It's funny to see today that folks are adding charcoal to their food for filtering? We got it for free in the age of steam. :o)
Very good, thanks.
name of the host is
Peter Snow
After seeing the stars of restoration, it reminded of a coach in dire need of attention I saw some years back. When I first visited Steamtown in Scranton Pennsylvania, they had just opened. There sat a Great Western coach in its cream and chocolate livery. It had come over for exhibition with the King George V locomotive. The same time the locomotive received it's bell, 1927. The locomotive did return home, but not this coach. The coach was stored in an Army storage lot for more years, the weather and vandals making things worse for the coach. Hopefully it has not been scrapped. For it would be a great project for the talent in the show.
Right. Someone should finance its return to UK.
Great series! Really fantastic work! I hope we see more of this!
I can’t believe they didn’t show the gold threshold polished and ready. What was all the buildup about?!?
How about washing your hands?!?
This is a great series
You should invite the Queen of England to take a ride on the train. I am sure she would enjoy it.
The host's glee when the train starts moving shows the four-year-old enthusiast inside!
