For us northern folk, we call it "running a stinger" when jigging walleyes. Keep the main hook and run a size 8-10 treble on a pre tied piece of braid aka "stinger hook" and it'll change your life. When we Jigs we let the hook free swing but when we're casting we'll one hook it back into the body. Works well for threaded on live bait as well. 👊
I wish I would have seen this a week ago. I was fishing a spinner bait with a paddle tail swim bait attached. Upon retrieving the bait through the muck, a huge boil occurred right at the boat and the swim bait was bitten off exactly where you placed the treble hook! Thanks for a great tip!
Basically it's a stinger hook without the main hook. I'm from europe and i'm using stingers for years on decent sized rubbers, but i'm not removing the main hook, i see no reason to do that when fishing for pike or zander. And if i am fishing without a main single hook and use only trebles instead i'm always using either screw-in heads or shallow screws plus a cheburashka weight. A clipped jighead will very easily loose the swimbait so you need to put some superglue on to hold the bait.
Technically speaking for us in California you can't have more than 3 books on a lure. So for us cutting the hook off of the jig head would be necessary to stay within the regulations.
Thank you. I always wondered about how efficient the hook was with the traditional rigging of the swim bait. This definitely addresses the obvious issue with a short strike.
It may be time consuming initially but you can use the rig over and over. The thing you have to do is keep checking the line from the eye to the hook and change if becomes worn or nicked.
We’ve been doing something similar, found with speckled trout, we have to use larger test line. They are toothy and treble hooks tend to snag deeper into the throat of trout with the line going across their teeth. I tried using like a trailer hook around shank of jig hook with mixed results. It tends to stiffen the action of plastic.
Same here for Speckled Trout. I used a trailer hook for a while, but found that I was catching a lot of small trout that couldn't reach the jig head hook , the reason for the short strike,, so I went back to only using the jig head without a trailer hook.
Agreed. First thing I thought. Run the whole jig head and the stinger. Halibut style. Baits add up, and there's too many used plastic baits in our lakes as well. Most plastic baits sink now adays from all the impregnated salt. Here in our lakes, so many bass have bellys full of soft plastic baits. To the point the many can't feed properly.

I usually use this rig when fishing for pike. You can also prep varying lengths in advance with loops at the end. Instead of attaching it directly to the jig-head, you can simply hang it in the snap with your jig-head. Also I leave the jig's hook intact. This way I can use shorter jigs to allow for more play in my baits while also reducing dead strikes due to the stinger which is changeable and the rig stays adjustable when I change my bait's size. When fishing for pike I use a wire leader. A good way to circumvent the use of jig-heads for shallow fishing is to use screws and 1-2 stingers depending on the size of the lure. Some screws come with adjustable weights but you can also use pear shaped weights to hang in the snap to adjust to the situation.

Wow Randy Thanks for the Tip. I was fishing Big Joshy's with a normal weighted head just today and lost 3 or 4 fish because they were only biting the tail. I'm definitely going to be trying this out.
ive been doing this same thing with spinnerbaits i find on the river where the hook is rusted past sharpening i just clip it straight polish the blades and tie on a baitholder wire and rig it up with a swim bait and treble
From Randy’s description; rigging it this way allows the hook to depart the bait which helps to prevent the fish from throwing the bait. Makes sense to me. I’ve got to try it this way.
I will most certainly try this method, I also love to use a trailing hook setup, adding a second hook to that single hook in the plastic paddle tail... It gets them every time, trying to nip the tail off 😁
Because its rigged out of the top. You would have to rig the jig head upside down to do what your talking about. And that would defeat the purpose because its to reduce the fishes leverage
@@ICYPROFITS The benefit of this rig is for short strikes, correct? So doing this with the original jig head hook intact, would be the same as a trailer hook on a spinnerbait. So the basic question I was asking is, why cut the original hook off? What’s the benefit to having just the treble hook?
@@derickstufflebeam1624 like he said in the video because it gives the fish more leverage to come off if you are just using the jig head. The same way pegging your weight does when flipping. With the free floating treble you increase your hook up because its not in a position to turn and blow out of the fishes mouth. Think of it almost as a snell knot and the hook movement versus a regular knot. That free hook movement is what you are after. The same reason treble hooks aren't soldered onto a crankbait. Also you dont want to effect the action of the bait or the look.
I bet those jig heads come flying out the swim bait often... with the original hook and a quick strike treble to the back you have more surface area to hook up
That’s so great! An additional tip since you’re already altering it, is to wrap some dental floss around the jig neck and add a drop of superglue before sliding on the lure. I’m a new subscriber. Thanks for the vid! Tight lines!
here in europe that rig is standard for preetator fishing like pike. the trebble hook is called a stinger and for pike we use a wire . we leave the hook on . just make a loop at the end and put it over the eye. no need to tie a knot. Its hold in place by a snap which is connected to the mainline or additional wire or whatever you use. so you can exchange both the bait or and the stinger really quick .
interesting, i lost a decent fish 2 days ago he bit the tail off my zoom swimmin fluke. i knew the body was too long for my hook, i was just hoping the bass would go for the head, and i been thinkin about that missed hook set since then. today, you make this video! gonna do this with my underspin
I just watched the video and was thinking about leaving the hook and making a trailer hook for short strikes with this method....and I think it would make the bait stay in position during harder casting or in the wind.
I did this in Havasu after losing a couple on a GT 360 searcher swim bait. Instead of cutting the hook I added the treble to the bottom belly . Never missed one since.
Wow thanks! I've been missing fish for a long time and just couldn't figure out why. I'm definitely going to subscribe and like. And now I can watch all of your videos.
Been using a add on stinger set- up for eyes which sometimes short strike on jigs. Works great with crawlers also, let’s you catch that 12”pesky perch, hey a fish sandwich is a fish sandwich.
Hey Randy the best way I found use a rivet the hollow little metal Piece insert in swim bait then thread your line through tie treble straight to line works great try it you might like it
Gotta check out some state regulation for this stuff. After altering the lure they could maybe count it as two hooks and I know where I live they give you a hook limit and hook restrictions in certain areas. What we do here is called a "stinger" hook and we can actually connect them right to the hook on the jig head no cutting
So why not just us the jig with hook and then back it up with the treble stinger?? It just seems like your going to keep losing your swim bait body each fish you catch or time you cast..
I've never seen this in bass fishing but it makes perfect sense. There are a lot of non-redundant fail points at the same time though worth mentioning. The knots would need to be 110% perfect 3 times on same rig, that's the only thing I'd be concerned about and once hooked you don't exactly have a direct line feel right to the fish if that makes sense.
My trout rid is much like this and it's a killer. I use a gold Aberdeen to nose hook a 2" rubber critter with the treble in trail like you have. A split shot 8" up the line. Never thought to up size it.
This also frees up more of the action of the lure. The hook Shank will stiffen the action of the lure. By removing the hook shank you've got more plastic that can flex giving the lure more action.
So you take one of best setups of hooking fish cleanly and set it up so the fish has a much better chance of getting throat hooked, gill hooked, or with a closed mouth with a hook in both the top & bottom jaw. Especially for the anglers that don't seem to show the fish much respect during the C&R process. Doesn't seem to be helping the cause much, does it? Might be worth it to the big money tournament guys for a winning fish, but Don't think cons are worth it for the recreational angler. I fish swimbaits a lot, and don't have a problem loosing fish. Even file the barb down if they are really inhaling that day. So yeah, I think I'll just continue to rig mine the way I have been.
Same here. My dad and I have thrown swimbaits for years and haven't had a problem with losing them. That stinger hooks is going to have a huge chance of hooking them in the throat special on small swimbaits like that. I have also learned that these " so called secrets" people who have fished for years already know about them. Plus most the time other RUclipsrs put a video out on it first then couple days or weeks later he puts one out.plus some of the claims are in correct. I also find it extremely hard to believe he has never heard of Butch Brown, but if these tips help some people then good for them. I unsubscribed months ago but keep getting videos.
Is this really uncommon in the US? We do this often in Europe, some brands have jigheads with an extra eye to attach your stinger. You can also make a free rig where the treble dislodges from the bait completely and the line can run freely so the fish can't throw the bait as easily, which works particularly well with large swimbaits.
I honestly thought I was subscribed, I have been watching for months. I am for sure subscribed now with notifications on. Great tip thanks for the video.
QUESTION: Randy, given the correct under-spin head with a line tie directly under the head, would you consider doing the same setup but only under the belly like a MagDraft? Do you believe having the hook on top is superior?
I was putting the treble on the bottom and left the swim head hook. It’s not weedless when I like to fish this type of lure over weeds or right next to weed lines sometimes hitting the grass with the bottom of the lure generates strikes just like a lipless. Cutting the swim head hook and putting the treble on the top allows you to fish the grass and weeds. The treble on the bottom takes that advantage away.
@@americanagothic7851 I also fish weeds and rocks, probably this baits' strongest advantage, and I've been looking to get these slacker fish that nip the tail. I think for me and the pike I fish, I'll keep that main hook and use wire to a smaller treble with the 3rd hook clipped off the bottom.
Yea but how many swim baits do you go thru using the jig head and just. Driving into the swim baits plus if it comes off there goes your swim bait on the 1st fish. And still in good use.
Please help do you tie your line to the hook or do you run your main line. Through the gig back to the hook. He didn’t exsplane that part. I would like to no. So impressed with that set up thanks
I came upon this same thing earlier this year..I'm living in Germany where the pike grow to over 5 ft long and I did the same thing but with a metal leader line not mono or braid..I went from about a 35-40 % hook up yo 101% hook up.. A good middle ground is to use a better jig head. Kalins Ultimate are my go to cause of the long shank hooks on them, great for getting the set on short strikers.
That is similar to a "stinger rig" I used to use offshore fishing for sailfish and dolphin fish back in the day, you rigged the mullet or ballyhoo in the normal manner but added a treble hook on a short lead not attached to the bait but trialing along by its tail. I caught a lot of short biters with that rig.
Done this before, but I leave the hook intact on the jighead, then tie on a regular hook to the eye and thread it through the back and out the top just like you would with a jighead. Keeps much better, way more solid of a hold and accomplishes the same thing

Any can't you leave jig with hook?
Does it impede it somehow?
Just asking
Great information 😊
Been doing this my entire life. Works great 👍
Was taught years ago to do this with a coffee straw inserted and run the line attached to the treble to your 2nd hook ( jig head)
Our tackle shop were doing this with Castaic Trout swimbaits back in the early 2000s for largemouth and stripers.
Wow thanks! I've been missing fish for a long time and just couldn't figure out why. I'm definitely going to subscribe and like. And now I can watch all of your videos.
Ok I have to try this. Thanks for sharing.
Been using a add on stinger set- up for eyes which sometimes short strike on jigs. Works great with crawlers also, let’s you catch that 12”pesky perch, hey a fish sandwich is a fish sandwich.
Hey Randy the best way I found use a rivet the hollow little metal Piece insert in swim bait then thread your line through tie treble straight to line works great try it you might like it
We all know that trick also
Gotta check out some state regulation for this stuff. After altering the lure they could maybe count it as two hooks and I know where I live they give you a hook limit and hook restrictions in certain areas.
What we do here is called a "stinger" hook and we can actually connect them right to the hook on the jig head no cutting
Exactly!
No, one hook is ONE hook Bro...
Showing some love !!! 💙💚💜
So why not just us the jig with hook and then back it up with the treble stinger?? It just seems like your going to keep losing your swim bait body each fish you catch or time you cast..
Excellent insight…was wondering if rigged as shown, does jig head ever separate from soft bait while casting?
For sure it would. Why not just keep the hook intact and add the treble?
Thanks for the great ideas.I think I'll try that.
WOW!! incredible Randy.... thank you
Yup. Works well up here in New Hampshire
Thank you I can wait to try this What a Great Idea
This also frees up more of the action of the lure. The hook Shank will stiffen the action of the lure. By removing the hook shank you've got more plastic that can flex giving the lure more action.
Great tip, however, I don't cut my jig hook off that way I don't lose the swim bait
Thx man!
QUESTION: Randy, given the correct under-spin head with a line tie directly under the head, would you consider doing the same setup but only under the belly like a MagDraft? Do you believe having the hook on top is superior?
i think you get a better hook up ratio like this bc once the fish hit it then there’s two hooks in the roof of its mouth.
That was a hard core tip thanks Randy
Thank you! Definitely gna give this a try with my paddle tail swim baits
Yea but how many swim baits do you go thru using the jig head and just. Driving into the swim baits plus if it comes off there goes your swim bait on the 1st fish. And still in good use.
Awesome channel. Practical to learn
Makes sense. Thank you!
Paris Lake swim bait stinger hook….!
Please help do you tie your line to the hook or do you run your main line. Through the gig back to the hook. He didn’t exsplane that part. I would like to no. So impressed with that set up thanks
Thnx for this video very informative.
I came upon this same thing earlier this year..I'm living in Germany where the pike grow to over 5 ft long and I did the same thing but with a metal leader line not mono or braid..I went from about a 35-40 % hook up yo 101% hook up..
Seems like all they gotta do is tap it and they were hooked for good 👍
GREAT TIP
Thank you for ur knowledge, experience & wisdom !! What u GIVE can turn an average angler into a good to a competitive angler if u intake and apply!! equal to 10 or more years of personal experience on the pond! I appreciate ur gifts of techniques and ur honesty.
Sincerely. Catch'em up this year you are deserving God bless you and ur family Sir
Thx Rick!
Never had any trouble setting the hook on swimbaits before. I'll try this out, and see if it's worth the extra time...
That's a great tip and there's nothing to keep you from tying these up ahead of need...do it while watching TV
Great tip Randy. Will definitely give this a try.
Done this before, but I leave the hook intact on the jighead, then tie on a regular hook to the eye and thread it through the back and out the top just like you would with a jighead. Keeps much better, way more solid of a hold and accomplishes the same thing
Good stuff Randy.. Wish we could have seen what the action going through the water... The Frye Guy
Yes!
Won’t you loose more swimbaits this way? What’s keeping the swimbait on if the hook separates from the body.
Thanks for that tip I never would have thunk that's. I cut the plastic back a section on my Cod jigs. When the black sea bass are in 2.8 to 5 lb. Limit out in 4 cast's of the cod rock anyways always come home with fish if the Salmon aren't there.
Randy, how many baits lost after fish is on? There's nothing holding the bait on the head except for the shaft. Please let us know, thanks
Great info and thanks for sharing.
