It is very bold to assume certain details about a situation. It is set up like this for a show, but most cops will likely open the trunk because it is their job to. I too wish every cop could be like this in every situation, but this is a pretty specific situation. That said, I am sure cops could jump to conclusions less, but in other situations acting immediately is the only option. I am no cop and won't claim to understand everything in their job description, but what if both guys were on the same team and had a hostage in there for example? Cops need to act within their job description in order to do their job correctly, but I agree that if given the chance they should think outside the box and they should make a decision that they know is right, even if it is outside their expertise. Cops should not just be machines and should understand the situation, though it is tougher in real life than in shows depending on the situation

This is just another example, on top of the countless others, why I love Nolan's character so much. He saw the mess by the empty child car seat and knew instantly. Man’s observing skills are top tier, 100% knew he had to ask questions silently.
This character, John Nolan, formerly worked construction, so he has an eye for detail, an edge he has over his colleagues.
His observing skills are top tier but didn't notice until he saw the seat. Why didn't he notice when the man sounded uncertain.
It is show... real life tone voice would've given it away. So... not really top tier, more like scripted down lol
It’s a tv show but once he asked him to pop the trunk and he didn’t make him do so it should have been a red flag for the criminal
