  • Here are the pictures I took when I was at the 99 Ranch grocery store. They were selling the butane cans at $1.19 each. Sometimes when they are even cheaper when on sale: imgur.com/a/ar0Br
    Today, I will show you how to refill a Dremel butane torch for cheap! (or any butane torch for that matter).

    Good video , I really like that torch your using . Some of the ones I have used in the past I fill them in the same manner . When the gas container gets low , I often use a warm water bath in an old thermos to get all the gas out of the refill bottle .

    some remarks: these cans are specicificaly made to be used in a certain possition so only gas and no liquid comes out in their intended use like a gas stove.In a gas stove they are on their side, horizontaly with the notch on top, that means that inside the can there must be a breather tube.Therefore using the can upside down will probably get most liquid gas out the versatipcan but not all, if you have emptied your first can you could cut it open to see how the tube inside the can looks, remember you want the tube opening to be UNDER the liquid so you transfer liquid gas from the can to the versatip.
    Secondly, indeed liquid gas can have a lot of impurities in it, these may clog up the calibrated and micro tiny hole in the gas jet or leave a brownish powdery like crust on the inside of where the flame is possibly clogging up the catalyst(the part in which the tips are screwed).The gas jet can be taken out with your nails, its the very small brass part you see if you take of the white ceramic insulator.Dont touch the front of the brass gas jet as you may clog up the tiny tiny hole with dirt and look at the back of the jet and you will see a tiny yellow filter, if your gas is dirty this little filter will foul up and gas will no longer come through.
    Therefore it is recomended to use high quality lighter gas and that maybe also the reason why these cans are more expensive, on the other hand the parts that will degrade are changeable although i have yet not investigated if dremel sells all these parts seperatly and what they cost.

      i agree with using refined butane gas meant for lighters. my versatip worked fine but when i used butane gas cans for portable stoves, it started to malfunction and wont auto ignite.

    Yeah, you need a "filtered" gas. But this is not the only problem. Dremel = Ferm has same defect as Portasol. The way gas valve works, there is a small weak pin, that is pushed down so gas fills. This tip breaks after 50-80 refills. And they don't sell replacements.

    I forgot to explain the impurity story: cigarete lighters have just about the smallest flame so they must have the smallest gas jet possible, i guess a hole in the region of 0.05mm/0.002” ,( i think a hair doesnt fit through the hole but i dont want to try it with mine and get the hair stuck in the hole ;-) ), that means that if lighter gas would be impure it would foul up the hole very quickly so it is reasonable to asume lighter gas is the purest commercialy available.
    Dremel made a very nice tool with unfortunatly not more soldering tip shapes ( a 3.2mm/1/8” spade is an essential) or a bigger hot air nozzle but al the parts that can go bad are seperatly replaceable which is a nice thing in this world where we throw a $400 phone after 5 years of service in the garbage.

    • @HECKAKYH-ADEKBATEH
      @HECKAKYH-ADEKBATEH 6 лет назад

      Dremel didn't make anything, its a rebranded Ferm. Yes and Ferm had this defect with clogging metal filter - Portasol solves it by placing the filter outlet on the tip, so you just change tip. Still both Portasol and Ferm have valve pin that breaks and their igniter is very crappy constructed, it breaks after 1 year or so (but can be externally lit up, not big deal).

    • @rafaeltorre1643
      @rafaeltorre1643 Год назад

      That pin hole is not where a torch clogs. When clean. I stick 24 guage kanthal wire through that pinhole and flame valve. Then a stopper and under it a sponge/filter. A torch gets clogged on the screen. Its a miniature metal disk, spacer, then screen. That screen you will see a splotch with bad butane. You either clean it well, replace woth new nozzle, or stop using cheap butane! It doesn’t burn well. I use Newport zero and whip its buy one get one $10 and it 10x or more filtered. Way cheaper then clogging it.

    What i want to do is take a can butane for a stove to refill a butane torch lighter < > Stop paying for the high dollar lighter refills

  • @AlexAvet53
    @AlexAvet53 2 года назад

    Look at the rust on the bottom of that $1 cans. Be careful because they might be about to leak and that is why they are only $1. Also those cheap butane canisters probably have rust inside and contaminated the gas so you will ruin your dremel within few refills. You get what you pay for is golden rule.

  • @srfrosky
    @srfrosky 6 лет назад +8

    Problem with cheap butane is the impurities
    They clog the torch and you can’t clean it easily if it’s on the inside valve

    • @vuaeco
      @vuaeco  6 лет назад +1

      What kind of impurities do you think is in there that can clogs your valve? I've never had that kind of problem. Sure there might be impurities but they are probably still hydro carbons like Propane, Ethane, or Methane. And they all burn clean.

    • @Tailslol

      pretty dirty oil...
      this is why it say filtered on lighter refills.

    • @nickloss2377
      @nickloss2377 5 лет назад +1

      True, a lot of these cheaper can have not gone through multiple refining stages. This can cause sputtering and inconsistent heat energy in certain devices. Also, bleeding your tank between filling is almost a necessity with these cans. But the torches or lighters that need triple+ refined butane are usually for cigar or cigarette lighters. Tools, camping stoves, industrial torches, portable soldering irons often don't need that bougie (high end) stuff and are designed to run fine on regular cheapo butane like the ones in this video. The instructions that came with your butane device would tell you if you need the higher grade butane. Kinda like with cars. Only some cars actually need premium gas, and most run better on the regular stuff...your car manual would tell ya

    • @JamesSmith-lt5zz
      @JamesSmith-lt5zz 4 года назад

      @@kijinseija727 I've never had problems using the cheap camping butane. But I have seen significant time run differences between refined butane and unrefined stuff. Also noticed to get the same flame intensity I have to have it maxed. Compared to about half with the refined. I still use both kinda of fuel cheap and refined. But there is a difference in run time and I'm not the only one to see it or notice it. I even hse a adapter on these camping ones to put in lighters. It works just have to turn the gas up higher then other brands and if you purge your tank in between refills it lights when pressed. Usually ignition problems is air in the tank when it was refilled. Just compressing that air tighter and air is make it not light or stay lit properly

      Butane is butane. I use that kind of butane all the time, in a kitchen torch, in a small portable stove, and in a catalytic heater in the winter. Same kind of can. I pay a little more than he did, because I get mine from Amazon, but I only pay about $2 a can, delivered to my door, in cases of a dozen cans. This isn't a precision device, or a fancy Collibri cigar lighter, it's a dang torch with a soldering tip.
