There actually was a Martin's Bank (they later dropped the apostrophe). Barclays took it over in 1969. Because I remembered this when I saw this video, I had a look at the Wikipedia entry. It has an interesting history, and a list of 'firsts', including being the first bank to have a drive through branch, the first to have mobile banking for remote areas, and the first to experiment and then use computers in current account banking. I deprecate the passing of these old banks, which, although sometimes staid, had standards that elude their modern successors, the debankers.
