  • Having used both the GX and XX1 SRAM chains. It is amazing how much better the XX1 chain is in every aspect.

      honestly in my experience GX is not as good but decent. However NX/SX are dangerously bad. I learned it the hard way because a new cannondale i bought was fitted with one in 600km it was dead but it had killed the pricey GX cassette in the process. Only run X01 now.

    I’ve got a different story. Fitted brand new 12 speed drive train and bought 3 gx chains. Rotated religiously at 800 km lubed every 70 km with squirt cleaned very regularly. Gave up measuring after a couple of rotations.
    Replaced everything last week after 11354 km. Only replaced as shifting was getting a bit sloppy . Each gx chain did a bit under 4000km. Haven’t bothered measuring again. Only time I had a little slippage was for a few km after changing each chain. And I ride often in a dusty and sometimes sandy environment. My mate who has done the same as me but is 15kilo lighter told me last night he’s done 12923km and still going.
    Even though I had excellent results I’ve fitted an xx1 chain as I got a bit tired of changing chains each 6 weeks.
    I’m really confused by people who throw away their chains after 600 km

      Same here, my GX cassette has 13875 km, in my case I have 4 chains (2GX and 2XX1 with 500km rotations), the GX have almost 0.5% while the XX1 have around 0.25% (measured with CC- 2 parktool), at the moment each chain has 3500km each and I still have no problems.

    I measured my chain with a park tool; if obviously called for replacing. Put on a new chain, but it did not mesh well. Put the old chain back on. Oiled it with baby oil. It's been a few hundred miles. I will replace the cassette and chain when slipping and skipping take away the joy I get from cycling.

      I was going to say that your cassette probably needs changing if it’s slipping with a new chain. Not sure about the baby oil though 😀. Must pick up a lot of dirt.

    Unfortunately for me, I did not see the same results that you did. Was averaging about 450-550 miles per GX chain with 0.5% stretch. Tried the XX1 and was only able to get approximately 600 miles with 0.75% stretch. So for me having a stash of GX will work better for me I am thinking. I will say shifting is smoother with the XX1 and the chains do look much better IMHO.

      check yr chain lubricant. xx1 is the most wear durable chain in the world. Unless yr averaging around 10,000watts, that short lifespan will be poor lubricant choice

    There is no way a chain would 12x longer. Changing the GX so often would strongly suggest that you got something very wrong when fitting the GX chain.

    Agreed. GX chains are utter garbage. Maybe it’ll be fine if you’re just doing casual riding around the block but if you are putting down some high wattage you need something stronger. Never go wrong with XX1 or X01 chains. There are other options out there as well though. I used YBN Ti chain while waiting for XX1 chain & boy I was impressed. I was pedaling hard with lots of climbing and put over 1000 miles over 3 months. It showed less than .25 wear

      I have had my new bike since March this year, I've been riding it regularly and it game with full SRAM GX Eagle. I'm a roadie and XC racer and yesterday when I hammered down some watts on my group set the chain snapped off, not at the links you can open (forgot the name lol), the literal chain bent and snapped.
      Always immaculately taken care of and always well-lubed. Thinking of buying X01 or XX1 chain tomorrow for sure, I don't want the same thing to happen again (and the shifting was becoming a bit dodgy because of the chain wearing out so fast.)

    At what amount of chain stretch do you swap your XX1 chain? Park Tool says to swap 11- and 12-speed chains at 0.5% wear. I'm riding XX1 and already hit 0.5 wear within the first 3,000km. Thanks!

    • @BrianMaynardLetsDoThisThing
      @BrianMaynardLetsDoThisThing  2 года назад

      I change at .5. But for SRAM chains. You need to use parkTool CC-4 and not CC3.2 to measure it. I was using the incorrect tool in the beginning

    • @Antonmusic871
      @Antonmusic871 2 года назад +1

      @@BrianMaynardLetsDoThisThing Why CC-4 instead of CC-3.2? Park Tool website says they both are compatible with SRAM 12-speed the only exception being that CC-3.2 is not compatible with AXS 12-speed chains.
      I saw a XX1 chain on sale on a website and the description said that it's compatible with 10-50 tooth cassettes. My new bike has 10-52 so is there older batch of XX1 chains on market that doesn't work with 10-52 or is the description just so old that it isn't updated to 10-52 cassettes? As far as I know all Eagle products should be compatible with each other.

    • @BrianMaynardLetsDoThisThing
      @BrianMaynardLetsDoThisThing  2 года назад +2

      @@Antonmusic871 All the eagle chains will be compatible with the new 52. It must be an old description. The reason for the cc-4 has to do with the size of the rollers. The cc-4 compresses the rollers when you do the measurements. But I also did not know this. This was pointed out to me on one of my other videos: ruclips.net/video/vT4AXiLEphk/видео.html and in the comments. Andrew Venditelli pointed this out to me. He refers to this artical cyclingtips.com/2019/08/bicycle-chain-wear-and-checking-for-it/. Hope this helps

    I had 10-11-12 speeds bikes in the last 10 years and the reliability and durability only go down if you have more speeds. The 12 speed chains are so narrow and they are have to endure terrible cross chaining with 1x drivetrain. For me, 11 speed was already enough. Plus, a 10-52 cassette weighs a lot on your back wheel, I just don't get it!
