    in regards to your question about thickening of individual teeth, many have said "burrs" I would argue that burrs are made in manufacturing process such as during milling of metal parts. I would call this thickening "mushrooming" which gets created during use such as on the tip of a chisel when material gets displaced during strike of a hammer (for example) or in this case by extreme load created by stretched chain on individual tooth, my $0.02 worth of an opinion

    New chains are cheaper than new cassettes, use a chain checker and get a new chain before it is too late.
    As the chain wears, the rollers get smaller and the distance between them (pitch) increases - this causes the lips on the edges of the teeth. If you change the chain before the pitch increases too much, you can minimize the wear.

    my casette does wear off the coating fairly quickly. for more than half the year do I run in extremely muddy conditions and every time I get home after a ride do I have to wash off a thick layer of mudd off the bike before it goes into storage until the next ride. it gets so muddy in fact that it gets noticably lighter after the wash due to all the wet mud that is caked on the bike. my drivetrain is howeer well maintained, it just gets extremely abused from the poor conditions I ride in.

  • @rcs2003
    @rcs2003 3 года назад

    One other reason of too early wearing the cassette: wrong sized drivetrain. I have a 11-42 on my mtb. On mtb races I use all te cogs. But while doing my base miles, low intensity rides, general fitness build mainly on tarmac(i dont have road bike yet, I live on a pretty flat country)etc, the cogs wear unevenly. Simply I dont need that big range for my everyday rides. The smallest 3 cogs looks worn like hell now after ~10 000kms, and the other 7s are almost like new. Only the two smallest are replaceable, now I have to throw into garbage my lightly used cassette because the worn, non replaceable 3rd cog. So I decided to buy a road cassette for training this year and pick up a new big range one for only racing. The same thing on the chainrings, I use 38T for training and 32T for racing... Important to replace the chain in time, makes your cassette lasts much longer.

      Most mountain bikes with 12-speed cassettes come with 30 or 32 tooth rings which, in my experience, is usually not big enough to justify going into the bigger cogs unless you are riding some really steep stuff. I'm looking to swap my own 32T out for a 34T for that exact reason; my terrain is undulating with occasional punchy climbs, but rarely do I make it to cog 3, let alone the gigantic cog 1. That being said, most 1x mountain bikes are also not designed to use a ring bigger than 36T, and sometimes not even that, so there isn't a whole lot of wiggle room.

    I spin cadence too and I got that kind of damage on my shimano 5800 cassete already after about 1000km. I think it was because I had very fast wearing chain. If chain stretch the load is not spread between teeth so much. Though rather than the chain stretching, it was the rollers that wore quick. The parktool chain wear tool was saing that I should replace the chain, but when measuring with ruler or a different tool that excludes the roller wear and only measure stretch, the chain was perfectly fine. But could worn rollers cause such wear? I can't imagine how. Worn rollers should only be able to affect shifting. Because chain probably not fitting on ramps properly. Maybe people who shift gears more often get that kind of damage on cassette? I change gears very often.

    So, the only wayto determine is:
    1) having SAME NEW cassette (to have a possibility to compare)
    2) having a cassette with BLACK and/or GOLD finishing, where even blind one can see shades of usage.
    Nice.
    Try it with any ordinary silver (grey) cassette (99% on the market) and without new one beside.

      Did you not watch the video? The whole point was that you shouldn't be looking at the coating wear, but instead feel the edges of the teeth. If you feel mushroomed edges, its getting pretty worn out. The 1,000 km cassette may show more wear in the coating, but it's in better shape because the edges are still smooth.

    My 800km xx1 12 speed sprocket is worn the same or a bit worse than your 10,000 km sprocket, only difference is mine was on an ebike, they are definatly a rubbish sprocket on an ebike, shimano xt gives far better wear than sram.

      I have bikes with SRAM and Shimano drive trains. My SRAM drive train consistently gets way more mileage than the Shimano.

      @@TheAllEngineering Unfortunatly i get the exact opposite, but on an ebike, I have found sram a much faster wearing sprocket and the xx1 claims case hardened and shimano xt does not, and the shimano price is 3 shimano for 1 sram xx1.

      don't leave dirt on it, clean it regularly and it should be fine. Change your chain when it reaches the first level of wear, 25%, not 50% like low end cassettes.

    • @TheAntoine191
      @TheAntoine191 5 месяцев назад

      Use xo or xx chains they have a harder wearing surface and this limite wear.

    It you rode in the mud more frequently, those burrs would be ground away.

  • @ByronWWW
    @ByronWWW Год назад

    A ride in mud would wear the coating off the casette no matter how much you clean and lube it. Surface rust would also wear off quickly but clean and lube before outting your bike to bed will make your stuff last longer.

    "How To Estimate Sprockets Mileage." so this video in 7 minutes managed to explain how to tell apart a new cassette from a mildly used one and from a 10x more ridden end-of-live one. Can you please make similarly helpful video comparing "milage" on tires? I would imagine a new one, vs mildy used one, vs thread-is-gone one. So that at the end I am able to voice an expert opinion on the amount of ride time on each with a precision between 10% to 100% of lifetime of the product left. Thank you.

    • @event4216
      @event4216 3 года назад

      Tires not only wear from use , but also age. There are old(er) tires still looking brand new and many of them are sold as new. And they don't put manufacturing year/month on bicycle tires like on car tires. At least, I haven't found this info.

    • @_systemd
      @_systemd 3 года назад

      @@event4216 the post was ironic, the video is a waste of time providing no useful informaiton, he compared a 10k to a 1-2k or whatever ridden cassette, so he may as well show a rekt tire and a mildy used one and educate us in 10minutes on which one is the more fresh one. I have watched a bunch of videos by this dude when ytb suggests me so and the titles sound interesting, it's always the same type of crap. his analytic scientific methods remind me of flat earthers looking outta window and claiming there's no curvature.
