This song really sums up all that is great about this band: Excellent lead vocals by Cetera and blended harmonies with Lamm and Kath, distinctive sound (only Chicago sounds like this) with wah-wah guitar and powerful horn arrangement, prodigious playing by guitarist Kath and soprano sax player Parazaider, and no wasted notes. Trombonist James Pankow wrote the song.
They will never find another Peter Cetera. He is one of a kind and really added the spark to that band back in the 70's and 80's up until the time he left.
My first concert was seeing Chicago in 1975 at the WDC Capital Center. This video looks like it was from 1973 era. Superb talent and showmanship. Glad to have seen them in their prime.
what amazes me is i would have never thought a wah pedal on kath's guitar would have been a good idea on alot of these songs, yet what he does and sounds like is brilliant..he seems to use it often, but hey it worked well...
I love this original stuff they had out. Puts chills down my back when the song first starts. I was a teenager when this was out. At all our parties, Chicago music was always played, back in Houston,Tx in the 70's.
@@jimcameron2511 I didn't mean the parties were "in the school" building, hahaha I meant there were home parties from our circle of friends, every wknd during school. Great music & memories of life, absolutely beautiful masterpiece, solid gold standard of excellence for 50 years, phenomenal sound, priceless music & video, these guys are the very best, top of the line 100% pure talent
The success of this song as a single in 1973 solidified Chicago's movement into MOR commercialism, although it was a catchy tune. It also solidified Cetera's taking over of the lead vocals on virtually all of the songs that the band would subsequently release as singles until he left the band in 1985. He really did have a distinctive singing voice.
+Robert G. Come on, they used the word "damn" in this song, which back then was very unusual. Chicago was not MOR until after the tragic and untimely passing of Terry Kath in 1978.
Unlinke many other RUclips versions of this song, this one includes Terry Kath which in my opinion makes it superior. While he's not seen much in the video, you can hear him. Also the harmonies are beautiful with Peter Cetera, Robert Lamm and Terry Kath singing together.
And you would be absolutely correct. This was recorded for a network doc released in 1973 to coincide with the release of Chicago IV: "Chicago in the Rockies" I would have loved to have been in the audience, even though some of the doc material featured Anne Murray (gag!) and Charlie Rich (not so bad). Must have been a lovely afternoon way out there on the Caribou Ranch.
74 maybe? I remember watching this with band colleagues. It had played in the evening during the week and then repeated on a lazy Saturday afternoon just like the one shown I the video.
I'm 15, Terry Kath is my favorite guitarist. The Beatles are my favorite band. Paul McCartney is, in my opinion, the best musician of all time. I just love his music, solo albums and all. Gumbeet is trolling. Don't fuel him, guys.
There are many great guitarists that we have all been privileged to hear and learn from. Terry Kath remains a step above most of them. If anyone can Listen to "Tell Me" from the Electra Glide in Blue Soundtrack and not be EXTREMELY moved then your soul has likely left your body at some point and you must be a zombie. The fact that Chicago went through such a sad change after Kath, speaks to his HUGE presence in the band.
love the old classics........ even more - I stop by this vid to see Terry Kath play this live version.... Love the sounds of the crybaby wah in his playing... He was sincerely a top notch guy in his playing... Little do most people know about him....Such a shame.... It's the same with Jeff Beck.... Most people don't really know the magnitude of his playing either.... heh.... Buncha tards walkin around yakkin some stupid stuff about Slash on the guitar... & Im thinking .....wow , theyre really missin out... Ask em if they ever listen to Gary Moore rip it up and they look at you all blank & everything.... Geeeeez.....
This is just pure musicianship. Is that a word? Anyway, the talent in this band was unreal, would you consider this jazz infused rock or rock infused jazz?
@rf396 This is a thought that never crossed my mind. But now that you mention it, it's true!! Terry Kath was a masterful genius!! Truly the soul of Chicago!! And dearly missed every day!! Heaven must have one hell of a band!!
@rf396 good one!! i'm listening to what he's doing & it is "AMAZING" i play guitar and if i had to come up w/ a guitar part I never would have considered using a wah wah.. Terry sounds like he is trying to mimic a horn with one of those plunger/damper gizmo's you know from new orleans type jazz band..he was so gifted and his vocals fit in well against the registers of Peter & Robert.
I believe this concert was done at the Caribou Ranch outside Nederland Colorado. Chicago recorded several albums at the ranch. On by Boulder and Boulder County now for open space.
Just north of Nederland. The Guercios donated a chunk of the property to Boulder County open space -just under 2000 acres this became the Caribou Open Space area and included the Blue Bird mine site and the Delonde homestead and barn,This was not part of the main ranch compound But just over the hill from it to the southwest. Many going up there and hiking to this old homestead think it was the studio etc. in fact it is a small farmhouse and barn .Little do they realize that over the hill thru the trees was the actual ranch where everything took place.
again, Produced by Hank Saroyan and Bill Lee for dick clark productions,,,live recordings engineered by Phil Ramone in the Caribou Studio in the bard behind the stage. Compact Video Trucks drove all the way from Burbank to Caribou Ranch.

@sindilee Agreed . And it isnt just them either. There are many who are not capable of making music here on earth, but upon returning home have that ability returned to them many fold. Yes, Heaven is most definitely a place a music. The most beautiful music one can hear and we all help make it.
+Иван Бровкин - It was a 1974 TV Special I believe a Dick Clark TV Special at the Ranch that their Producer owned and had his recording studio at. At age 12 I caught this on TV and have been a Chicago fan ever since!
I love Chicago's music, but there was just something about their early music that was so great. It was a harder rock/jazz sound that was more expressive of masculine energy. later they turned to balladeers. That's fine but just not the energy of the early Chicago, especially the first two albums. Nonetheless, their music is great and they deserve to be in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
+FranknnnStein Record label looking at the competition: Rare Earth, Earth Wind and Fire, Peter Frampton, Boz Scaggs and the like. Gave mainstream pop a more R & B flavor. These sounds were coming out of Northern California____Doobie Brothers, later Pablo Cruise. Using Cetera to blunt this was a great move. He could soar with his voice and that allowed them to use more jazzy horn arrangements, That allowed them to then cross into R & B and jazz markets, while losing NONE of their core audience. Great move and showed that music professionals know what the hell they're doing (most of the time). All of this allowed Chicago to lose NOTHING in the disco era, while remaining at or near the top of the charts. And they got some memorable songs out of it to boot.
FranknnnStein --- They lost their main players, guitarist n vocalist. They are the ones that gave them that edge, first Terry unfortunately. Then Cetera left, you are right on both counts. They still deserve to be in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame for sure, no question.
What a setting for a concert, I wonder how you got on the list to be invited out to the ranch for an intimate concert with a great band.. I would love to see the entire film that was sot for this. I wonder what happens to this stuff, somebody filmed it!!!
