    Who the hell would mark a thumbs down on this video? Gawd, I can't believe people.
    And How old is this guy? He looks fantastic. He needs to do more shows/ presentations. HE looks great, sounds great. He's eloquent, and has great and important information to share.
    I have luckily been on a plant based diet for most of my life, simply because I've never been the type of person to shun most vegetables. Sure there were some I didn't like, but most of them I did. And who doesn't like raw fruit? I've been a fruitaholic since day one.

    Plant-based for mostly 2 years now and this is a great discussion but I take issue with the solution portion starting at 1:01:39 why is there no discussion of taxing the meat/ dairy/ fishing industries and why is there no responsibility placed on the governments and groups creating bills, laws and legislation related to our health? Why is there no responsibility placed on advertisers and mainstream media who are deceiving people regarding health and food? People already make poor food choices because of lack of income, knowledge and time. Why aren’t there more solutions focused on building (or converting existing business models to) plant-based convenient stores, restaurants and fast food businesses and concentrated in low income areas, schools and shopping malls? This ‘solution’ is not enough and is quite scary. How on earth could everyone’s plant-based or animal-based spending habits even be tracked? More questions than answers.

    this is a great talk.. population goes up, animal products keep being advertized and promoted even in schools so their consumption goes up, environmental problems keep getting worse.. we're in for environmental disasters.. the forces in play need to face this problem and do something about it, like giving a basic income to those who work in animal agriculture so that they can retire from their job.. and people need to know animal products are not good for them

    A bushel of corn weighs 56 pounds and costs $6.85. That’s 12.2 cents per pound.
    A bag of Tostitos contains about 10 cents worth of corn, and costs $4.00.
    That’s a 4000% increase.
    A bushel of wheat weighs 60 pounds and costs $7.62. That’s 12.7 cents per pound.
    A loaf of Wonder Bread contains about 16 cents worth of wheat, and sells for $4.40.
    That’s a 2700% increase.
    A bushel of soybeans weighs 60 pounds and costs $13.64. That’s 22.7 cents per pound.
    A box of “Silk” soy milk contains about 4.5 cents worth of soybeans, and sells for $2.90.
    That’s a 6400% increase.
    In other words, it’s highly profitable to turn the products of industrial agriculture-cereal grains and soybeans-into highly processed “food”.
    In contrast, pork bellies cost $1.20 per pound today.
    A pound of bacon costs about $5.
    That’s a 400% increase…
    …which looks like a lot until you compare it with 2700%-6400% for grains. Also, unlike grain products, bacon must be stored, shipped, and sold under continuous refrigeration-and it has a much shorter shelf life.
    It’s clear that it’s far more profitable to sell us processed grain products than meat, eggs, and vegetables…which leaves a lot of money available to spend on persuading us to buy them. Are you starting to understand why grains are encased in colorful packaging, pushed on us as “heart-healthy” by the government, and advertised continually in all forms of media?

    • @papparocket
      @papparocket 7 лет назад +10

      The only thing that matters is that we grow far more grain and soybeans in this country than people could ever eat directly. So unless we allow millions of farmers to go out of business in order to bring down supply to align with demand, then we need to find something to do with all of that grain regardless of whether the price of the finished product is 4 times, 40 times or 400 times the cost of grain and soy. Fortunately for the grain and soy farmers people like the way that a pig's ass tastes, so we soak up a lot of the excess by feeding it to pigs (and cows and chickens and even carnivores like salmon). And even that isn't enough to soak up all the excess supply so we are trying to convince ourselves that it makes sense to expend tremendous amounts of fossil fuels and energy to grow all this corn and soy so that we can ferment it to ethyl alcohol or extract the oil to make "biodiesel" to power our cars. Whatever it takes so that farms never are allowed to fail.
      As for highly refined grains in shiny colorful packages being pushed as heart healthy, that is coming from the same government that is pushing meat, eggs and dairy as healthy because the primary mandate of the USDA is to increase the sales of American farmers, period. The USDA will never let its secondary mandate of promoting the health of the American people get in the way of its primary mission. The answer of course is do your own thinking and research. When you do that you will see that the best science available shows very clearly that the best diet for humans is one that is as close to 100% _whole plant based_ as you can get. Skip the refined grains, skip the refined sugars, skips the refined oils, and definitely skip the animal foods.

    That's true Donald Fewox. There should not only be a million views but a million responses, outcries, and steps taken to fix what's going on, and reveal what's been shoved under the rug. And, those numbers should all have doubled by now, since it's been two years since you made your comment. My heart goes out to those that are suffering as a result: human, animal, guilty, and victim alike-and in a way, we all own some of the guilt, because of lack of awareness; and have all been victimized, by not being made aware by those whose job it's been to supposedly be keeping us informed about such matters. As Mr. Simon mentioned, I also liked the candor of the milk-producer who said it's an unrealistic, unsustainable expectation to see this continue.
    This will, therefore, require a change in thinking and actionable steps by each of us to see things improve.

    57:14 "Some of you may have heard of Polyface Farm. It's a well-known eco-rotation farm in Virginia that is profiled in the book "The Omnivore's Dilemma" by Michael Pollan. At Polyface, cattle move around the farm; the chicken follow the cattle a few days later and they peck insects from the manure, and the rabbits follow them in cages. And the whole thing is thought to be about as sustainable as animal agriculture can be. Here's the thing -- there's something like 313 million Americans and we consume something like just under 200 lbs. of meat per person per year, so the question is, how much of that meat is Polyface, for example, producing? How many people per year does Polyface feed?...Polyface Farm produces enough meat to feed about 700 people each year. That's almost nothing. It makes me wonder why we even talk about it. In some fantasy land, or on some other planet, where there is unlimited amounts of land, operations like Polyface might work, but on this planet and in this country where all the land is being used for something today, Polyface doesn't work as a model...southern California...we would need 33,000 more farms. That land would take up seven of the eight counties in Southern California. No room for houses, no room for buildings, freeways, nothing. Just farming."

    Hmm, some great points! Totally agree that the way we produce meat or milk is absolutely crazy and can not by any means be good for our environment or health but to correlate the up going cancer and heart disease statistics only to meat consumption is simplifying the problem hugely! Since the 1950's there is so much more that is messing with our health: pesticides, GMO seeds, massive amount of sugar and preservatives in our food, all the chemicals in "hygiene" products, air freshener, washing powder, pollution of our drinking water with chlorine and fluoride and the list goes on for aaaaages! + Our bodies are designed to move but we don't do it anymore in the quantities we need.
    This is just one part of the puzzle and it's a very tricky one to get together!
    So, I will now get my ass of my couch, do a workout and eat some fruits afterwards 😋

    this video made my heart hurt … I went plant based. I know one person making the change is only helping my consciousness...not the whole world. But I DO know that one day... the horrible cruelty will come to an end. THIS was not how how God intended.
    THO' God has allowed this condition to exist.
    Why?
    Because over 6,000 years ago - two people made the decision that they did not NEED God to make a decision. And the only way to allow this question of Who's sovereignty and rulership is the right way - was to allow MAN to do their 'own thing'...as it were.
    As in any accusation or court case - people want proof. Satan accused God that People will only Obey HIM, as long as he does good for them. Remember the story of JOB? Same thing - God was accused by Satan - that Job was protected ONLY because Good Things were handed to Job. IF you don't know the story...Read the book of Job.
    So...God said...you can do what you will...only, do not touch him (take his life). And Satan went to work. Job NEVER lost faith.
    Seriously... DO you think GOD who is the epitome of LOVE - would want pain for his creation???? NO! But this issue of Who's Soveriegnty is important took on a major role, not only for mankind - but for all Creation.
    People get more upset over dumb politics...and never think about the Big Picture of who has the right to Rule Our lives and this World????
    So... bottom line - is that GOD has only allowed a Time Limit on this Issue. AND THIS ISSUE is coming soon to an end of being Proven. Jesus's whole gospel was about God's Kingdom, the Value of it for Mankind, the Gifts IT will bring...and the END to Satan's influence upon mankind - READ Matthew 24, Luke 21, Daniel 2:44, and the book of Revelation.
    THIS means...when this issue is resolved.. All of Mankind who want this Peace - will be brought to the conclusion of What God wants for Mankind, including love for it's creation/animal. Psalms 37:10,11 - The MEEK shall inherit the earth.
    While I do not like how this world is being Run...But I know, that there is enough proof - that there will be an END to THIS horrible System of things. Matthew 24:14

    Failed to point out the addiction mentioned in title. Wants to tax meat, regardless of whether it is raised regeneratively or in feed lots. Assumes that carbohydrate foods are not addictive, not unhealthy, not produced in a manner which wastes soil and increases emissions. Points out that Polyface Farms is not a model for production that can feed the country, but presents no data or studies. Very little in the way of citations or studies presented. When he references people that consume meat products, he doesn’t take into consideration what other foods or proportions consumed- like processed foods, sugars, starches, glyphosate.......on and on. He brings up diabetes frequently. People who don’t consume carbohydrates don’t get type 2 diabetes. Consumers who care about their health and/or the environment, need to better educate themselves and find clean, healthy, well raised food. Taxing one producer is nothing more than a corrupt way to claim market share.

    The taxing stream is a nonstarter. It is always a regressive tax. States, including the federal government, only raise the taxes on all so-called sins when the revenue starts dropping due to folks quitting or laying off the sins, and as a part of that deal they fail to actually use that money in a useful manner.
    The one thing you can always count on is government always keeps its share of the pie.
    I am a die hard starch-based man, but facts of how the government is a part of the problem in a big way and then suggesting it is the solution is just not logical, and not going to happen in real life.
    You need to appeal to peoples natural instinct and unfortunately, that usually will not come till they see results in their own life or those around them. It is why I try to find as many real-life folks telling their story on youtube and posting to my FB. I also let my friends follow the victories I have achieved in my plant-based trip.
    I do not get into the animal rights or environmental stuff, as that ALWAYS makes the point political and not personal and until folks feel it at the personal level, they are not going to come off their whole life experiences.

    I am completely for the idea of a plant-based diet and am on a plant-based diet and you had me engaged until you decided to state that taxation is a good idea.
    Taxation is THEFT and it is FORCE. The market always corrects itself if you relieve government intervention. By removing subsidies alone, the market would have to bear the costs of production and the cost immediately goes up to the public. The demand goes down, the marketing by the US government is reduced or stopped.
    I was going to share this because you have some sound thoughts on the economics of food production but seriously, taxation is force and force is no better than the treatment those animals receive in their lives by being forced in horrible conditions. If you care about people, you would care about people being at the end of the gun if they refuse to pay a tax. It's ludicrous what you just stated.
    Please, think before you push the idea of taxation on meat or dairy or any tax for that matter. You already know why the economic model is in the favor of the producers, you should actively work against that corporatism/cronyism model rather than punishing the people that are caught up in the lie that is government and corporate market manipulation.
    In addition, the public was already reducing tobacco smoking before the taxes were going sky-high. A young man lost his life in New York City because of the tobacco mafia that is law enforcement. This same theory is failing in the idea of "the war on poverty" in that the market was already doing a great job of getting people out of poverty and then the government stepped in and it flat-lined and hasn't been effective because it has saddled the market with more regulations which actually hold people back.
    These are things people don't understand because they don't get the information from their schools or the media. It's all under the carpet and you have to lift that carpet to see the truth.
    As a libertarian for 17+ years, I have studied free market economics and find the ideas that people come up with to punish the innocent caught in the crossfire of government and its policies which are almost always pushed by corporate lobbyists are lacking in some key understanding of how not only markets work but how the human works as well.
    Taxation is a bad idea. Get lobbyists out of Washington and you've just raised the prices without the triple and quadruple dipping in the taxation theft scheme.

      Liz, you bring up valid points. You seem passionate about such logical principles. Do you exclude the subsidized animal products in your regular diet? Or do you reward the factory animal producers promoting the lie in spite of your awareness of the free market?

    • @SittingKittyColorado
      @SittingKittyColorado 8 лет назад +9

      Chris -- I don't consume animal products. I also don't use pharmaceuticals either, which is another industry I am not a fan of because of their involvement in the F D A.
      I do my best to not support industries that have their hands in the taxpayer cookie jar. It's not always possible but my not eating animal products was born of me wanting to be healthier.
      The side effects of not eating animal products are:
      1. I'm exorbitantly healthier.
      2. Very little of the money I spend is supporting companies that take from the taxpayers.
      3. I'm not caught in the web of the PPACA.
      4. No medications, to include over the counter.
      5. The production of my food, when I can get it, supports more local farmers (seasonal of course).
      I didn't get into this way of life so I can subvert the heavily subsidized meat, dairy, and egg industries, I did it for my health but it's a positive consequence and it has it's conscience-positive consequence.

    • @tharun960
      @tharun960 7 лет назад +9

      Funny that people always worry about B12 but don't worry about heart disease and the many, many conditions that come with following the state endorced diet and following the herd.. A.k.a mostly junk food + animal products with 5 - 10% of the diet max made up of fruits and vegetables..

    • @tharun960
      @tharun960 7 лет назад

      It's good that you're becoming more conscious about the effects of dietary changes on your health (B12 deficiency) but you should in that case thoroughly understand the consequences of your own diet.. And how many people suffer diseases and problems from B12 deficiency versus everything else... 1 in 2 people die from heart disease. Look up the cancer stats and the list of the other top killers then go look up conditions amongst plant based eaters.

    As a non-vegan who's extensively researched both sides of the optimal health debate, I enjoyed the lecture and appreciate the information put forth, but man does he fall off the rails towards the end. This guy's groundbreaking solution is to impose a tax on foods that he deems undesirable, unhealthy, and hazardous to the environment, rather than focusing on educational campaigns insisting that people go vegan of their own accord, so that consumers can vote with their dollars (you know, TRUE democracy) rather than be financially bullied. Yikes. Talk about pie-in-the-sky...
    For starters, food isn't comparable to cigarettes, just like how earlier in the lecture he erroneously compares human beings to farm animals, although that's a philosophical debate I won't bother getting into. In any case, his correlation = causation graphs towards the end is simply not how these things work. There are too many factors responsible for why less people are smoking overall outside of price increase. Not to mention, him insisting all studies showing saturated fats, cholesterol and animal foods in general as safe are funded by the food industry in some way, despite the fact that big agriculture companies like Monsanto, Syngenta, Dupont, etc. have a financial instinctive and stake as well. They serve to overhype the benefits of a plant-based diet as well, considering they dominate most monocrops. What about THEIR industry manipulation? At the end of the day, consumers should realize all major food industries have strong government ties and will insist their product is safe. It's up to us to determine what is safe and beneficial for us, not government and its ancillary agencies, and as of now, the nutrition science is literally all over the place (unless of course you're in a vegan echo chamber and believe meat, regardless of source, to be the devil).

    Eating meat is not bad if consumed as part of a balanced diet. The problem is that most people consume meat 3x a day. Fruits, nuts and vegetables should make up the majority of people's diet, but small amounts of meat, fish and dairy are also necessary for complete nutrition. Otherwise why would vegans need to be especially careful of struggle with such things as B12, Iron, Calcium, Omega 3 and protein? Just add a small amount of meat, fish and dairy and you are 100% healthy without worry. Vegetarianism is more of a political and social statement than a true healthy lifestyle. Our bodies are designed to consume both vegetables and flesh. I agree most of it should be vegetables, fruits and nuts but some flesh is also needed for optimum performance.

      Hey I'm from the future (year 2024). I'm using an app called cronometer and track everything I eat in a day (only plantbased) for a few days now. It lists every mineral, vitamin and amino acid in my diet. At the end of the day there are 3 components I'm low on: B12, iodine and choline. B12 is skyrocketing after I take a tab. For iodine I'm now using iodinized salt (1 pack of 500g is under a €). I'm taking an Omega3 EHA/DPA pill based on algae once or twice a week but I heard I don't need that because Omega-3 ALA is metabolized to DHA/EPA if you got enough of it. I'm currently at half of my daily nutritional intake and already got 400% DV in ALAs. Vitamin K1 is already at 95% which is metabolized to K2. But I'm taking K2 MK7 once or twice a week too to be sure.
      I'm plantbased for 2½ years now and protein is not a problem at all (all 9 essential amino acids).
      So it's a B12 once a day and Omega-3 and K2 once or twice a week. Now I need to figure out choline.
      Edit: Corrected my Omega-3 after half of my nutritional intake. It's already 400%, not 150%. I looked under Omega-6 wich was 150%.
