  • The Scuderia AlphaTauri and Oracle Red Bull Racing reserve driver, was thrown in at the deep end in Zandvoort after Daniel Ricciardo was injured on Friday. Liam Lawson explains how he felt going from spectator to race driver in the space of a few hours, getting his big chance on the Grand Prix stage.

Appreciate how honest he is in admitting that it's actually frustrating to watch 20 people living his dream while he's watching and waiting to get the chance to drive, he's concerned with Daniel's health condition yet he's excited about his debut. Love that.

Its rare when rookies usually refrain themselves from being themselves and saying something that may make them vulnerable, hats off to liam on him being so transparent in his self interest and acknowledging how big of a job he had to take on with next to none prep for the race.

Wish there was more of this sort of insight into this guarded world. I am very impressed with the way this young man carries himself and his intelligence. Sadly though, I'm not sure this is a good thing for him. He could set the world on fire here, Daniel heals up, and he's headed back to Japan. Is Red Bull going to let him go to another team? Unlikely...

He did a great job in Dutch GP. Imagine debuting in such a chaotic race, but still managing to bring the car to the chequered flag even close to the top 10, and make so little to zero mistakes. I'm looking forward to his race for the rest of the season. I'm also looking forward to his F1 career, maybe he can get a seat next year or another year. I'm rooting for you, Liam!

This is my favourite F1 driver interview in quite a long time for a few reasons. The questions, and interviewer, were fantastic and Liam's answers were so honest and without ego. You can tell this interview was thrown together at short notice with not a lot of time for the production team to set up a shot, but the simple two-cam one light set up with lots of super tight shots was extremely effective. It really brought the viewer closer to Liam's raw emotion, excitement and uncertainty. I really loved the bit where Liam talked about playing F1 2010 as a kid, and then when he first got in the cockpit in the garage it immediately took him back to this childhood memory. This is where you really come to understand that an F1 debut is the moment a person realises a life long dream. I've been watching F1 for about 30 years and one of the things I enjoy most is seeing new drivers get opportunities - and then take them. Boy, was Liam impressive on his first crack at a changeable Zandvoort. He was equally assured at Monza as well. As an Australian, I'm super pleased to see a Kiwi neighbour get a thoroughly deserved chance at F1. I wish him all the best in his remaining sessions and hope he can use this as a way to break into the field full time in the near future.

There is a reason Nyck and Danny Ric were/are in a junior team. He should be up or out and I don’t see him in an RB seat and I don’t think RB see Yuki progress enough. My guess (as good or bad as anyone’s 😄) is RB is looking for a 2025 driver (or 24 if Checo does not deliver consistently). I haven't seen a driver in interviews with the maturity Liam projects. He's able to self reflect in a way you have the impression there's a vault of potential genius to come. The fact he not only finished that first GP given the crazy weather and to finish mid field is a noteworthy achievement. To be shy of the points in the second full race and just behind your experienced teammate shows F1 is a place he can be.

Liam Lawson is of the same calibre as Alex Albon in the car as well as outside (communication with crew and also media). I have seen them race together in the same series and in the same team. He has got the skills, experience and conviction. He does not bring a lot of money with him, but I would not be surprised if at some point he finds his way to Williams, Aston Martin or even no.2 Red Bull. Didn't know much about Lawson prior to this whole scenario, but you've absolutely got to take an opportunity when it comes. There were some people who saw his first F1 drive and went "that wasn't that impressive," and I was like, you've got to be joking. You could not have picked a worse drive to debut on, and he not only held it together, but managed to finish in 13th. Isn't that what you want to see in a potential rookie, that the universe could literally throw everything and the kitchen sink at him, and he brought it back home. I'm rooting for him. Just when you thought silly season was just about wrapped up, he's the potential spanner in the works.

I really do like Checo & Dan so would hate for either of them to miss out on a seat (although I can see Dan doing well in the Supercars series if he was to miss out on a seat in F1), but at the same time it wouldn't be fair for Liam to miss out on a seat for 2024. You're risking lossing him to a rival team if you don't find a way to sign him for next year.

He gave a honest and frank interview about his call up to take over from Daniel Riccardo and his feelings watching the other drivers go out on track. What a marvellous young man he is.
