  • In this video, Liam Lawson helps me explore the world of Super Formula - Japan's premier open-wheel racing series. We discuss the insane performance level of the cars, the challenges of a single-season in Japan, and how this helped him to be even better prepared to race in Formula 1.
    Liam Lawson replaced the injured Daniel Ricciardo in Zandvoort, after his accident and injury in Free Practice 2.
    If you want to see the whole interview, I'll publish it soon! Members of my F1 Data Analysis newsletter get early access to the entire 40+ minute discussion with Liam.

    Another thing to add, most Super Formula drivers are also drivers in Super GT. Some of them are literal veterans with lots and lots of experience as well.

    Oh my god that came totally out of the blue. Really interesting interview. I think you're exactly the right person for such interviews that lean on a more specific aspect of F1.
    In Interviews when it gets to more technical aspects of driving you can sometimes see the drivers pull back a little to "dumb it down" for the interviewer/audience. I feel like with you (and this specific audience) drivers don't have to fear being "too much" or "too boring" in their answers to a certain subject.
    For me, I never knew that much about Super Formula so your insight about the Pole/Win ratio and Liams explanations were great.
    Looking forward to more of these. Congrats Blake :D

    This is why I think SF and especially IndyCar (mainly because of ovals but also drivers) are a significant step up from F2 for open-wheel racing. It's astonishing that they award so few points on an FIA Super License. I mean, it makes sense why they reward so much less, the FIA wants to encourage drivers to go through their series and earn them money. But it is still a shame.

      I definitely wouldn't say the talent levels in Super Formula are lower than F2/F3. Most of these drivers are either veteran drivers or young upcoming talent developed from certain manufacturers to compete at the highest levels.
      Take Ritomo Miyata for example, Liam's rival at SF, he's a Toyota development driver who won Super Formula AND Super GT championship this year and is being prepared to take a place inside their GR010 Hypercar in the future.
      There's also the likes of Naoki Yamamoto, a veteran who also won both championships at the same time twice. He drove alongside Jenson Button in Super GT and he's usually the faster of the two.
      Unlike young F2/F3 drivers who sometimes just stick to doing one series, Super Formula drivers usually have a far more varied background from many different types of racing. You can defeat experience.

    First... Super Formula is NOT a feeder series, NOT a "Japanese F2". Don't treat it as such. SF is a top series just like F1 or IndyCar.
    Being "underpowered for the downforce they have" is exactly why Super Formula races are fun to watch. If they go green from first to last lap they are more entertaining than IndyCar when the same happens there. This is the secret for good racing, you leave the corners faster, you don't have much top speed, slipstream becomes more important. In this scenario even dirt air is less of a issue. I wish SF would try to get even more grip, bigger tires maybe.
    This is also the problem with F1, they got too much end power.

    • @brrrake
      @brrrake  6 месяцев назад

      I didn't say Super Formula was a feeder series, and the comparison of a higher performance F2 is not unfair.

    (I was going to delete this post due to F1 ranting but after 2 bottles of wine...) The problem is F1 itself. Half that grid are either journeymen or money (actually all of them are money) HAAS in particular can go forth and procreate for retaining that stale 'should be be driving in GT' lineup alone. Also the fact that F1 has only 20 cars. Not acceptable. They need V10s and a minimum grid of 24 cars. No country deserves 3 GPs (F the F off Libery media), make the cars smaller and teach the drivers what yellow flags actually mean, instead of throwing red flags each time one of them breaks a nail. Oh as for SF, good series. I recall Eddie Irvine basically won the 1993 championship (i.e he DID win the championship, but just like Prost in 1988, points meant nothing).

      @@christodejong42 I think it wont happen because Toyota will not team up with Sauber, contrary to the Volkswagen Group, Toyota has all the facilities to start a new F1 team from the ground up and to develope a whole car in-house, no other manufacturer can do that and they would want to leverage that instead of teaming up with Sauber. I don't think toyota is interested in F1 atm, they have their hypercar stuff, rallye stuff, nascar and so many other series and probably will bring a new GT3 racecar. So 2026 Toyota is most unlikely. It's more likely that Honda Teams up with Sauber, although honda is a much smaller manufacturer, they have tons of F1 experience and the whole Honda Corporation is huge.

    Yes because so many of these guys ended up SO successful in f1. Gasley broke SF, then came to f1 and he’s nothing special. Super Formula cars are literally f2 cars/Indy cars. They all use Dallara chassis and very similar Dallara aero with similar downforce and just different tires and ballast.

    • @brrrake
      @brrrake  6 месяцев назад +1

      Okay so... Gasly got smacked by Verstappen so he's "not good" 👍unfortunately, Verstappen has done that to every teammate he's had in RB.
      Super Formula cars are not F2/Indy cars - they have substantially more downforce than both.
      Dallara makes a lot more than "one chassis" and there is no such thing as "Dallara aero"

    • @binskee677
      @binskee677 6 месяцев назад +1

      Thats incorrect, Super Formula uses the Dallara SF19 chassis which made for and only used in Super Formula. Engine wise you have two manufacturers and tires are from Yokohama. The series is more like Indycar from an organisational perspective but performance wise (aero/downforce) it's more like F1. For a one make series, teams have also a lot of freedom when it comes to aero , setup etc which makes it very interesting, more than Indycar or anyhting else except F1, and thats not even Japans top Motorsport Series ...
