Diana is her own genre. I have always listened to great music from just about every genre. Somehow Diana-genre has become my favorite 😁
This is an old ritual song about an orphan bride. The girl has no parents. The river was considered the boundary between the world of the living and the dead. She goes to the river and asks for the blessing of marriage. She says that there are many people at home, but there is no father and mother. You hear Diana singing in a whisper. These are the words of the deceased mother of the bride. Then the girl is crying. In Russia, at weddings they sang sad songs to scare away evil and the marriage of a young couple was to be happy. Such songs were called “weeping.” The figures behind Diana are spirits of water and forest.

There are no superlatives that are enough to describe this performance by Diana at age 14, this is the performance that started my addiction to Diana 6 years ago.
It's pretty crazy she was so young because the maturity in her voice is behind her years.

@@melvinthinks You do not need subtitles to hear music, subtitles are for understanding the lyrics of the song you are listening to and you are the one who just literally said that you did not understand what she said or what is the song about.
I find subtitles distracting and I want to react to the performance and the music. I don't need to understand the lyrics to appreciate great music and a talented artist when I see and hear one. That goes for any language of music. I also commented on the origins of the song as I researched about Rechenka before I watched the video.

The song "Rechenka" (affectionate from the word "river") is a Russian folk ritual wedding song. There is a version that this song appeared before Christianity, and since early Christianity and paganism were closely intertwined, there are many versions of this song. It tells how an orphan girl comes to the river and prays to the spirits of nature. The song is about how my mother, father and brothers were killed by enemies, there is no one to take care of her. The river in Ancient Russia was considered the border between the world of the living and the dead. You hear an ominous whisper, it's the spirit of her late mother responding to the girl's crying.
There are about 30 variants of this song, but the content of each of the variants is based on the sad appeals of the orphan bride to her deceased parents, asking them for "blessings" and help for marriage, for family, to strangers.

This is an old wedding ritual song, it's like a puzzle, it consists of phrases taken from ritual songs. Where it is sung in a whisper is like the words of a deceased mother, because in Russia since ancient times it was believed that the river is the border between the world of the living and the dead, as in the mythology of others countries. You might appreciate Diana even more when you learn a little of her story and how she started singing.
Diana started singing at age 5 as a remedy for a bad stammer caused by her traumatic early years. She was abandoned by her mother (or taken away by the authorities) at age 3 ½ after years of neglect and abuse and spent 1 ½ years in an orphanage before being adopted at 5yo by a wonderful woman and her family who took on the task of rehabilitating her. It was quickly discovered she loved singing, was very good at it, had a good voice and a superb musical ear (and perfect pitch according to some). @@melvinthinks There is quite a lot of detail, including from Diana herself, about the abuse and mistreatment she experienced on the internet in various videos/interviews. It is quite appalling. I am full of admiration for her and her adoptive mother who did an amazing job of rehabilitating and raising her.
The internet/trolls/online community can be a dark and troublesome place. When someone is talented and gains a lot of attention, unfortunately the trolls come out in force to stir things up and cause negative reactions.
It is always a pleasure watching reactors’ brains explode as they watch this video. Thought Experiment: Ask yourself, “What was I doing when I was 14?”

I have watched Diana singing this many many times and she still chills me. I fully agree that there is no need for English subtitles with Diana -- Jus to be able to experience the emotions she can portray is enough for me. Thank you for this reaction. A suggestion - Dernier Danse by Diana - is in French.
Definitely on my list, Trevor. Some people disagree with me/you in that subtitles are essential. I personally like to absorb myself in the music and performance because I find subs distracting. At the end of the day, regardless of whether I understood the lyrical content or not, I was still flabbergasted by it. That's the sign of a great performer.

I see you've also been reacting to Ren, Chinchilla and The Hu - all wonderful artists. In a somewhat similar vein to The Hu, you might like to have a gander at Otyken, who are a Siberian folk rock group, and from Japan, The Wagakki Band who are folk metal. Both bands incorporate traditional instruments. Also, Nini Music - folk metal from Taiwan.

In 2018 Diana first sang this song in the singing competition 'You are super' (she was 14 years old).
This international TV competition is unique in the world and was specially developed for adopted and orphaned children. It is designed not only to give positive emotions to children who do not have a prosperous childhood, but also to hope for changes in their destiny.
Diana entered the competition 'You are Super!' in 2018 and 2019 and won twice. The winner of the season will be determined by a 6-day public vote and the final took place in the Kremlin Palace and her videos were uploaded to RUclips and soon she had millions of fans.
The project producers help the finalists start studying and encourage their creativity. Diana won a scholarship to the College of Music. Igor Krutoy, as a juror, gave her a small apartment in Moscow. So, she could start her vocal training with the best teachers such as Professor Olga Donskoy (She died of Covid-19 in Oct. 2020)…

Great reaction to the incredible singer Diana Ankudinová. She lives every song she sings. You felt it right in this composition, its meaning of the Russian story. Diana is an open channel to ours ancestors and to other dimensions for me. The Slavs were and are a spiritual nation, and Diana showed it in this composition, where she goes from the height to the absolute depth - we have that in the older Slavic songs of Our Ancestors. Huge respect and admiration for this young lady, I am completely enchanted by Diana. I can feel everything he sings, how he plays with his body, voice, emotions. I love the song Vorona ( I am a crow) she is a crow in that song, you just feel the spirituality and her voice will make you sit in your chair. I watched this with English captions so I could actually get an idea of what the song's about, it helps but you're right in saying it doesn't matter what language she is singing in.
Diana is able to capture the brilliance of this song & she has the skills to deliver. Diana's voice is pure magic & I'm glad she has this gift as her first 4-5 years in this world were horrific to say the least!
I'm so glad that Diana was "rescued" off the streets & placed in an Orphanage as family members felt there was something wrong with her as she couldn't talk at all @ 5 yrs old so "they" put her in an Orphanage. While there a speech therapist spent time with her to help her learn how to talk etc. The rest is history!
I listen to vocals as patterns and shapes as much as what the lyrics mean, if not more. Especially in the music I normally listen to such as rock and metal, you can't really understand the lyrics anyway! So I like listening to melodies and how it enhances the song.

When Diana performed "Rechenka" (Реченька) at age 14, I think people around the world realised just how good Diana is at conveying deep emotions and feelings to her listeners! Initial releases of this performance didn't have multi-language subtitles, but everyone who listened to it understood that it was ancient and deeply emotional. She has an incredible ability to walk right through our souls and "educate" them! A very special young lady, a very special singer! You should watch again and put CC and subtitles on in English - but it may confuse you more! 😊 This is my take on the song ( two good friends translated and explained for me).

Now Diana performs this at her concerts a capella and starts in total darkness! The effect is electrifying, to say the least! She is one of the finest a capella singers I have ever heard!
