In the early eighties, I met and married my high school sweetheart. His mom was the first and only person I knew who made homemade donuts from canned biscuits, topping hers with a Jiffy mix chocolate icing. She told me that she learned to make them from the cook at a local diner she worked at as a teenager. My mom was a wonderful cook too, but she had never heard of anyone doing the donuts that way either. Needless to say, in the months leading up to our wedding my mom in law helped me gain about 10 pounds. She made the chocolate iced donuts, a to die for peanut butter fudge that I have never tasted the likes of before or since, and popped popcorn on her stovetop that tasted better than movie theater popcorn. My parents, in laws, and husband are no longer with me, but this video brought back memories. I'm going to have to make these donuts for my granddaughter. Thank you for the video how to.
Aww. I’m so sorry that you’ve watched so many of your loved ones pass on. That’s beautiful but sad. You were there for them and I’m sure they were grateful for your love. I’m happy that this video brought back happy memories for you! I just turned 50 and lost my dad 15 years ago extremely unexpectedly due to a virus in his heart. I hope that I can start to make these recipes to make myself happy since I don’t have happy memories from my life. Have a great day. Be safe and smile. 😊
Thank God for memories,I know, I have them..more often now that I am 75+yrs of age.all let bed one's gone, but never forgotten...never made donuts, but I will try these, look so yummy.
Great tip on how to make donuts! I should have never clicked here because now I'm gonna want to fix them too much! My husband works for General Mills who makes these biscuits. He brings free cans home when they give them out. We have several cans right now! Lolol
WOW! I'm am 60 and I have 2 younger sisters. My father made the best donuts ever. And they were made from the cheapest biscuits. We made regular donuts. And we made donut holes. It is one of the best memories of my life from my father. Hugs from Texas 😎
Yes. Good memories. My mother & I made these back in the 1970s & my father would take 6 of them to work in his lunch bucket. I'm almost 64 now. A 4-pack case of biscuits with 10 biscuits in each case just cost about 79 cents...40 biscuits for just that much which made 40 donuts plus 40 donut holes!
Yes!!!! The cheap biscuits make the best! We just poked a hole with our hands and made a doughnut fried it in oil sprinkled with cinnamon sugar. It was a big treat!
My dad made these for us on weekends. He just made a plate of regular sugar and cinnamon. Out of the oil, they were rolled in the sugar and served warm. Oh my! Great memories :)
My Mom used to do this when we were growing up, but of course she used the smaller biscuits that were like 10 for a $1.00 a roll back then. I still remember her drawing them on a brown paper bag, doubt we had paper towels back then, even if they existed we couldn't afford them. They were so good, brought back lots of memories. She made glazed and sugar and cinnamon and we helped her.
Great hack! I remember one from my childhood as well. Take Jiffy cake mix and add a little more flour to achieve a dough consistency. Roll into balls or use a small ice cream scooper. Fry, then roll in either powdered sugar or cinnamon/sugar mixture. Next, turn on the t.v. for some Saturday morning cartoons. Oh, and some Nestle Quick chocolate milk too. Enjoy.
If you don’t add any icing, these are a perfect way to make Hungarian Langos (fry bread) smear it with garlic and eat with Chicken Paprikas and you’re in Hungarian hog heaven. My favorite home meal growing up
In the early 80. I was a new Mom. My hubby got a" Fry Daddy" used to make these but not the glaze like you do. Yum. We woud just dip them hot into sugar, or cinnomon/sugar. I will make the glaze when the grands come. Looks so good. Thank you for reminding us about this blast from the past.
My Mom cooked these in the 60’s. We loved them, and you’re right! They were quick, easy and delicious! ❤ My Mom passed away 2 years ago. Oh how I wish she were here. I’d make them for her now! 😊
I'm 65 yrs old and my mom use to make these kind of donuts also when I was little. the biscuit dough was not this brand but everyone sure loved them. thank you for the memories. I had already forgotten about this simple donut recipe . ❤
This is how my momma made donuts. Upvote just for the memories :) My brother and I feasted like kings on these growing up. My friends from the city didnt understand how my momma made us donuts all the time Lol
My grandma made these for the grandkids when we stayed over on the weekends. She made like three different icing toppings for them. Chocolate (she kept a canister of cocoa in her cabinet), cinnamon and brown sugar and a vanilla one. She’d put sprinkles on some of the vanilla ones. Sometimes she’d use store biscuit dough and most of the time she made them from scratch. Only time we had store bought donuts or cakes was birthdays. Granny could do it all! Since there were so many grandkids she’d mostly make donut holes to stretch the dough. 😊
Tips and advice: The NON flaky (no layers) biscuits work best! The cheapest (4-packs) do just fine. My glaze was either milk and powdered sugar (sometimes added cinnamon) or lemon/orange juice with powdered sugar. I use to inject a little jelly into the donut holes. I never twisted them because I preferred the dough be fully cooked. Even if I didn’t make “holes”, I put a small hole in the middle just to be sure it cooked thoroughly.
fresh dough works much better. As simple as a 2:1 ratio of Self Rising flour and Plain Yogurt, IE 2 cups the flour, 1 cup the yogurt. Its good as just that, but you can edit the dough from there- add a bit of sugar and vanilla to make them sweeter, add a bit of cinnamon or chocolate (I like to use Nesquick). This makes a very wet dough, best to put in a bag, cut off the corner and use a pair of scissors to snip little dollops as you squeeze it out into the oil for donut holes. If you add a bit more flour and chill it, it could be a bit more firm for you to kneed and roll out and make shapes and traditional donuts and such. Tips for topping- If you're going to glaze or roll in sugar or cinnamon sugar, do while they are still a little hot and oily. If you're going to dip them into a thicker icing or roll in powdered sugar, let them cool off a bit first. I haven't thought to try a lemon glaze, but now I think I will, thank you.
Thank you. I’m about to fry donuts for a church fair and while I know how to make a yeast donut, grappling with rising times…mixing…cutting out and everything while guarding my oil from little children had me nervous. With this, I could just have a small cooler of my “whomp” biscuits and fry as needed rather than have my massive and precarious tray of yeasted donuts over riding in the sun while I wait on folks. My booth is “decorate your own donut.”
My son loves making these! When he was in high school, he’d make them before school and bring them to his first class. He said the girls loved him and hated him (diet). 🤣😂🤣 Easiest and tastiest doughnuts!! He liked to make a chocolate glaze for his.
My sister used to make cream puffs and leave them and her friends Locker at school. They've been married for about 45 years. A way to a man's heart is through his stomach
Oh boy!! You brought back memories of my childhood! My mom use to make can biscuit donuts with the cinnamon and granulated sugar mixture, they were so good my mouth is watering just remembering! You have inspired me to make these this weekend with my son, he’s gonna love them! Thank you!
My daughter was allergic to everything fast food as a little girl. So I made these for her and my three boys to share. She's grown now and makes them for her babies. So many beautiful memories that last a lifetime 💝
Haven't seen this done in years when I was a kid and my mom made them for us. Such a treat! Thanks for the trip down memory lane! Will do for my family over the holidays.
🗣Thank you. I am going to do this with my grand children. My sister use to do this about 60 yrs ago and I always think of her when I see donuts. You have made my life more beautiful today and I can wait until I see my gkids again. My mom did the same thing with sugar and cinnamon! I've never heard anyone else with that story growing up but now I see a lot of people got the same experience!
If you want them even a little sweeter try substituting pancake mix but make it into dough instead of pourable pancake liquid. Of course you can be creative with the mix and add cinnamon or other various flavorings.
I stumbled upon this video and I’m so glad I did! Definitely gonna make this for my family. Maple donuts are my favorite and replacing the vanilla for maple extract would be sooo good! 😍
Reminds me so much of when I cook beignets. Grands original rolled out to a quarter inch cut into quarters deep fried just a moment and then toped with powdered sugar. Amazing freaking amazing. Just like Cafe Du Monde in the French Quarters that have been cooking nothing but those and coffee for over a hundred years
❤Cafe Du Monde! Beignets and Chicory Coffee! I don't remember them using canned biscuits though. 🤔 I do remember coming home and making them from a box of beignet mix I bought there, along with a can of chicory coffee. Love this method though! 😍
I asked a guy at a donut shop one time if his donuts were fat free and he said yes that they don't charge a dime for the fat or the sugar so sugar free and fat free!!
I tried your recipe, turned out great. With the donuts I filled some with Lemon apple and cherry filling. My husband almost made himself sick from eating so many lol. For the holes I did the same and those turned out to be my favorite ones.
@angelamcintosh I went to Walmart and bought a box of filling bags ($5.89) and a tray of the tips ($11.98). I just filled the donuts after they cooled. But make sure when buying the filler for the donuts that on the can it says “pie filler”. That works much better. Just like they do at Krispy Kreme doughnuts.
I tried this out with my husband yesterday, and just had fun with it. I did actually have a hint of doughiness in the middle, so I popped it in the oven for about 10 minutes to fix my issue. It came out beautifully, and they were just so much fun. I’ve actually watched this video more than once, I even had a friend show me how to make donuts when I was 19 or somewhere around that age- and I can honestly say I finally made them. Lol. It’s so silly, I’ve just always wanted to try. So yeah. Thank you for your recipe. Much love. 💗 Daisy
Every store for 100 miles has stopped selling the original grands flakey biscuits..... they sell every other kind of grands. Just no original for some stupid reason. They are the only biscuits I'll eat...
I learned how to make these years ago with the cinnamon and sugar. Haven't done it in quite some time but this video is an inspiration. I will definitely do it with the glaze, thanks.
I make "cinnamon rolls" out of canned croissants. Store brand works just fine. Cut them into wedge strips, sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar, roll and bake. Then use the confection sugar glaze over the top. If you have cinnamon chips (like chocolate chips" you can add those in also when rolling them up before cooking. Nice easy treats can be made from these canned doughs. I will have to try the donuts next!
Those look delicious! When my mom would make homemade donuts the glaze that she would make was left over brewed coffee and powdered sugar.....it was amazing on those donuts! I'm not good at making homemade donuts, but I'm going to try your method and make her glaze, I bet that'll be delicious 😊
This reminded me of my Mama stewing dried apples with sugar, water & a splash of lemon, then rolling out canned biscuits & frying apple turnovers. I really liked them cold from the fridge the next day. I think I will try these with the flaky biscuits soon. I love twists.
Awesome video, and tutorial. Growing up in the 70s and on the wrong side of track, these were the only donuts I had ever seen. I can afford whatever I want now but I still cook the recipes my mom and granny made. They are just as good and i still feel my granny next to me. I live in texas and my granny was from Southeast Kentucky.
I was doing this before anyone else thought of it. And I told EVERYONE. So this makes me really happy. It only takes a drop in the bucket to make a ripple. Yay!
Just tried these tonite & they are the bomb! Great way to get fresh made donuts with very little time & effort, love shortcuts like this. Thank-you, Thank-you, Thank-you!
These look so easy to make! My husband loves glazed donuts so I'll be adding what the recipe calls for so I can pick it up this weekend! Thanks so much for sharing!!😋💞
Yes,these are a flash to the past! They are a yummy treat. Easy and economical. Thanks for this trip down memory lane. I am 72. My mom also made these.
Oh gosh.. This took me way back to my childhood. My mom made these for us with the cinnamon sugar. Loved them. I will be making some for my boys and will try them with glaze as well. Thanks for sharing.
Havent had the idea of making these for along time until I saw your post. Thank you for sending me back in time with some of the best memories of sharing the baking with 3 of my great aunties, grandma and momma. I'm 69 as of this past 14th of the month, and I transported back to when I was 4 years old sitting at the table icing Christmas cookies. These look so easy and even though it's just me, I'm going to bake them for just me and eat them all. LOL
Oh my goodness, I haven’t thought about how fun these doughnuts are in years! We definitely have to make these again! Thank you! And don’t forget that you can use powdered sugar, too!
My mom made these for us in the mornings. She used the cheap canned biscuits and a 2 liter soda bottle cap to cut out the donut holes. Sprinkle with powdered sugar and they taste just like funnel cake!
I make a chocolate frosting with melted butter, chocolate, powdered sugar, vanilla, and a little milk. I dip one side in like a typical donut. Equally tasty is one just rolled in cinnamon and sugar while still nice and warm from the fryer. So good!
Made this tonight! They were eaten up SO quick! I had a hard time getting the twist donuts to cook enough on the inside before the outside got too dark. But all the other shapes came out fantastic! I followed your glaze recipe as well and only needed a extra tablespoon of water. Thank you for sharing this!
Yep ! That brings back memories. That's how my mom used to make them. My mom also used milk instead of water and no salt when making the glaze. Those were the days!💛🌻
Oh my gosh! What a coincidence! I’m having friends over this weekend and I kept thinking of a fun but easy dessert to make, that was “fall-ish” and I thought “oh, I’ll make biscuit donuts and roll them in pumpkin spice sugar!” 👍🏻😋
Funny I was just watching TV and they were making donuts. They made dough from scratch, but this shortcut looks great, they also made a maple glaze with maple extract powdered sugar and sprinkled real bacon bits on it. maple glaze and bacon doughnuts.
Used to do this on rainy days with my grandmother. We would either glaze or use a sifter and powered sugar. We also used the small cheap 10 biscuits in a can for like .25. Awesome.
almost 5 years without my mom.... I just turned 30 and I miss her more than ever after watching this. we used to make these and I can literally taste them. we just dipped them in powdered sugar like fair food or a glaze like you did...I'm off work today I might have to make these.
I never heard of making doughnuts with biscuit dough. I will have to try this. Thanks for sharing. It was very satisfying to watch. I saw a guy put biscuit dough in oiled muffin cups. Then he topped it with a mixture of parmesan, mozzarella cheeses, chopped pepperoni and a hint of olive oil and Italian seasoning. After baking he dunked them in warm pizza sauce. It looked awesome.
My little sister and I used to do these as kids in the 80s. Here’s a tip. We would cookie cut the hole in the center and for our twist, we’d turn it to the number 8. Never had one unravel. Great job.
Flaky biscuits aren't the best choice. They more likely to fall apart. Homestyle works well. Or any other kind that's not Flaky Layers. I found that the best part was the donut holes. So I made a whole tube into donut holes. It was really good! I strongly recommend Glazing and then drying and then glazing again.
Yes I remember this as a child it is simple and easy! The taste is good as well. You're definitely taking me back to my childhood. 😀 I definitely have to make these soon and let you know how they turn out after so many years of me not making them!😀🥛💜
My sisters and I made these growing up and topped them with powdered sugar. I recall using a cap from a soy bottle (or something similar) to make the hole in the middle of the biscuit (to this day I still love a good donut hole - LOL). These were delicious and fast to make (and inexpensive). Brings back good memories. :)
I've seen this recipe years ago here but never tried it. This time I will. Nice and simple! 👍 I love those twisted donuts with the granulated sugar sprinkled on the top! Yummy! 😋 They're always usually sold out at my local bakery. Drats!
New sub here! These look delicious! Definitely an inexpensive way to have donuts for a family of 7. I can think of 100s of ways to customize the donuts already lol! I am definitely going to make these for myself, husband, and our 5 children on Christmas 2022 morning!
I used the flaky layered buttermilk and they came out great. First time ever trying to make them with dough that I didn’t hand make. I had my temp on 350 degrees but it was too high since I had a squared pan. They also came out a little thinker than I like so I am trying again tomorrow or the day after. 😂😂😂. I’m so grateful I found your channel! Thanks so much for everything!

Much love. 💗 Daisy
😊
Every store for 100 miles has stopped selling the original grands flakey biscuits..... they sell every other kind of grands. Just no original for some stupid reason. They are the only biscuits I'll eat...
I would have had mine cooking. These people take forever. Makes it boring 💤
Sounds awesome
Oven temperature?
Those look delicious! When my mom would make homemade donuts the glaze that she would make was left over brewed coffee and powdered sugar.....it was amazing on those donuts! I'm not good at making homemade donuts, but I'm going to try your method and make her glaze, I bet that'll be delicious 😊
Wow, coffee! That sounds so good!
How did your mom make the glaze, it sounds yummy?
I am 52. I grew up an Air Force Brat. This bri gs back memories of many Saturdays after gymnastics at the Youth Center on Norton AFB.
My grandmother used to do this when we were younger. She used to also fill the dough with taco meat or refried beans then fry them. Awesome snack
Sounds good mijo
. Taco meat is called picadillo...
I’ve been making these for over 40 years they’re so good and easy 😁👍
I have 2 cans in my fridge. Sounds like a plan. Yum! 😋
These look simple enough for me to even try! Def going to! Thx!
OMG! This is my favorite video now. I'm going to make some this weekend. 😋 Thank youuuuuuuu 😃 ❤️
That was very simple. I will definitely try this out.
Mom's everywhere, loved this quick and easy
treat. 🍩🍩 ❤️❤️
I was doing this before anyone else thought of it.
And I told EVERYONE.
So this makes me really happy.
It only takes a drop in the bucket to make a ripple.
Yay!
My mom did this for me also! I can't wait to do this with my 10 year old son.
Make them with a side ham scrambled eggs. Thank me later
Funnel cake yum
I'm going to try this recipe tomorrow morning with a fresh cup of coffee and a 🍩
My mom made these when I was younger ! I’ve been meaning to make some myself - def going to this weekend . 😆
I made donuts for my kids with the canned biscuits 60 and years ago . They loved them warm with sugar coating. Fun to do.
I have always loved that popping when the can pops
My momma always made donuts from the small regular size cans and would float them in a sugar and water glaze. They were amazing and we loved them!
This brings back great memories! One of the first things I think my mom taught me to make and I taught it to my kids too! TFS
I make a chocolate frosting with melted butter, chocolate, powdered sugar, vanilla, and a little milk. I dip one side in like a typical donut. Equally tasty is one just rolled in cinnamon and sugar while still nice and warm from the fryer. So good!
Looks amazing. On our list for the weekend to try. Thanks mama.
My Mom made these when I was young. I am 58. That was a long time ago. Great memory. ❤️
Oh my gosh! What a coincidence! I’m having friends over this weekend and I kept thinking of a fun but easy dessert to make, that was “fall-ish” and I thought “oh, I’ll make biscuit donuts and roll them in pumpkin spice sugar!” 👍🏻😋
🥵🙏😱
Funny I was just watching TV and they were making donuts. They made dough from scratch, but this shortcut looks great, they also made a maple glaze with maple extract powdered sugar and sprinkled real bacon bits on it. maple glaze and bacon doughnuts.
@@Kenneth-tx8mg 🤤 That sounds righteous!
That sounds delicious 😇
@@Kenneth-tx8mg yummy!
Used to do this on rainy days with my grandmother. We would either glaze or use a sifter and powered sugar. We also used the small cheap 10 biscuits in a can for like .25. Awesome.
My Abuelita would always do donuts just like that but with sugar & canelita. Ohh miss her dearly! You brought back some beautiful memories 💕
Hi! I was just wondering what canelita is? I googled it and it didn’t mention food.
Cinnamon
@@haydeemedrano2293 thank you!
almost 5 years without my mom.... I just turned 30 and I miss her more than ever after watching this. we used to make these and I can literally taste them. we just dipped them in powdered sugar like fair food or a glaze like you did...I'm off work today I might have to make these.
That's the one thing I love about Pillsbury you can make many different kinds of things. I use the Pillsbury Croissants to make pizza.
A great memory for the family. It’s like you stated ! You remember your mother making them
I never heard of making doughnuts with biscuit dough.
The recipe and the doughnuts and holes look delicious. Thank you for inspiring us.
Well, her flaky donuts turned out great😂😂😂
what kind of oil? vegetable? crisco?
We did this in 1986 when I worked at Mr Chicken!! We used honey on them after we took them out of the fryer! DELICIOUS!!
Fried biscuits with icing. Yum
Been making these for years and my mom before me.a very simple and quick treat.good too..
I loved watching this video, soothing and tasty.
I make these all the time and they are so good 😋😋😋😋😋😋👍👌👍👌👍👌😛😛😛😛👏🏼👏🏼👊🏻👊🏻great job😍😍✌️
Thank you can’t wait to try these 😋I’m going to put them in the air fryer and see how it goes
Great idea!🍩
Please let us know how they turned out in the air fryer, please
I've seen this recipe years ago here but never tried it. This time I will. Nice and simple! 👍 I love those twisted donuts with the granulated sugar sprinkled on the top! Yummy! 😋 They're always usually sold out at my local bakery. Drats!
New sub here! These look delicious! Definitely an inexpensive way to have donuts for a family of 7. I can think of 100s of ways to customize the donuts already lol! I am definitely going to make these for myself, husband, and our 5 children on Christmas 2022 morning!
I used to make these in my restaurant, Customers loved them!
These look awesome! I’m going to make them today. ❤
How did it go?
I used the flaky layered buttermilk and they came out great. First time ever trying to make them with dough that I didn’t hand make.
I had my temp on 350 degrees but it was too high since I had a squared pan. They also came out a little thinker than I like so I am trying again tomorrow or the day after.
😂😂😂. I’m so grateful I found your channel! Thanks so much for everything!
Wow! Those are beautiful! I didn't know that you could make donuts that easily.
There were 9 childten in my family growing up! My momma used to make these all the time!!❤❤❤❤sweet memories!!
They look so delicious
TFS
Made these camping. Packed some cinnamon sugar to roll them in. Super easy and a total hit with the group! Thank you!!!
Hi you always have great content thank you for sharing.
Thumbs up have a great and blessed day. ☺👍
Gonna try this myself, normally I would make donuts from scratch...this looks so much more easier and less messy.
