I mean, brown cheese could as well be caramel :D It's very sweet, but with the consistency of harder cheeses. Its technically not a cheese, but made from the byproducts of making goat cheese - and today, it's much more popular than goat cheese itself, being a staple of Norwegian foods.
The difference about the red and green buses: The red ones drive locally in Oslo, whilst the Green ones drive out of or into Oslo. There are also many people taking the train in and around the outskirts of Oslo, but the metro departs more often and diverges more, so it's easier for people who live in different places. If you use the app, it'll tell you what to do to get where you want :)

use this trip to get a feel of the place, I never recommend Oslo just because of the prices and less value for everything + less nature views than the west and south coasts. if you don't want to spend a lot of money, just make conscious decisions. Walk, use city bikes or public transport for longer distances. Buy your own food and eat that, restaurants are usually expensive, depending on where you go. We do have a freedom to roam law, so you could even save money if you camp outside, which is free, but less comfortable. Remember that norway is HUGE and cities are far apart, so its better to take a few weeks and travel by train/buses along the coasts to see the most of the beautiful nature. So the biggest expenditures will be, room and board, food, and travel, so save where you can. Everyone in norway speaks English, the seniors less so but still enough to get understood, so if you need information or have questions, you can literally ask anyone, and they will be happy to help you.

As some one else mentioned: the trams are called Trikk, short for eletrisk/electric, been called that since it started 130 years ago, in 1894 to distinguish it from the horse driven trams.

Oslo is a nice city with excellent public transport. And the whole country of Norway is very beautyful with all it´s high mountains. And what goes for the people, I have only good experience of them. Very nice and friendly. BUT: Norway is a very rich country (it´s not many places in the world except Norway were a local Mercedes-shop only accept that you pay the full price instantly if you wanna buy one of their cars), thanks to it´s great oil deposits, and this fact has an impact on the general price level. So bring a big load of money with you. Don´t be surprised if an ordinary hamburger cost twice as much as you are used to. I once knew a couple of guys from Trondheim in Norway who frequently smuggled cigarettes from Sweden, since the price for a pack was half in Sweden. Ordinary norwegians normally hasn´t that problems with the high price level, since they mostly are well paid. It´s the foreign visitors. With this said, I have nothing against Norway and the norwegians. I love all our "brother people", norwegians, danes and finnish. Greetings from Sweden!

I live in Oslo, but I am from Bergen. Public transport functions almost the same in Bergen except our Zone 1 is HUGE and you get 50% more time per ticket compared to Oslo. Wanna go from the Airport and to downtown Bergen? It is all Zone 1. That's 40kr. In Oslo, that's 3 zones to get to the airport. 120kr. And that's the 'cheap' local train option.

  • @jeschinstad

For a short trip to Norway, nothing compares to Oslo. If you have a summer to spend, that's different. But for a weekend, you probably don't want to spend eleven hours walking to see a mountain. We all love our local places, but half the population of Norway lives close enough to Oslo that school kids can take a day trip to the capitol and visit museums. So your tourist destination is our basic education. A new child is born every day and they all need to see the viking ship. There are lots of spectacularly beautiful things in Norway, but for a short trip, nothing can ever compare to Oslo. And you have chosen the absolute best time of year to visit Oslo. From November to March, I can travel anywhere but north, but if you want me to leave Oslo in September, you would have to pay extremely well.

Getting to Flåm from Oslo is not easy in a day. The train between Oslo and Bergen often get sold out days in advance, especially the early departures. It takes almost 5 hours to get to Myrdal where you get of to do the Flåm railway. Ticket is anywhere from 500 to over 1000 NOK per person from Oslo to Myrdal, and then you have to add the ticket to Flåm which is 510 NOK alone.

The word "trikk" that we use for tram is short for electric. :) It was built in 1894 and was the beginning of Norwegians obsession with electric transportation. Back then, the big deal was that it was silent and doesn't stink or make houses dirty. These days, it's more about convenience, health and climate. Oslo is shaped like a bowl, so when it's cold, the pollusion gets stuck and air quality can be reduced extremely quickly. By the way, the Metro and the Trikk are connected and the Metro trains will simply switch from getting its electricity from the rails to getting it from wires above. We can't have high powered rails in the streets, or else people would die from walking across the street. :)
