I am glad that Texas & Pacific rr 610 was preserved for display as well as having a brief excursion service career from 1976-1981 ; the 610 is one of the earliest examples of the 2-10-4 "Texas" type locomotive design being built in 1927, while the wheel arrangement debuted in 1925.
I've had the privilege of sitting in the engineer's seat of this locomotive and it is massive for sure. Not real good visibility looking through the windows either. They say this locomotive pulled the freedom train through Texas but the first time I saw this locomotive at the TSRR I immediately recognized it as the locomotive that pulled the freedom train to Mobile, AL where I live.
I would love to see this thing brought back to life... Unfortunately, the railroad on which it resides makes it impossible to turn it around. Also, something about the trailing trucks being prone to running ground when backing up. Other issues also come up, some which I can't quite explain... But at least it survives and is stored in an excellent facility.
All things considered, she's in a lot better state than I would have expected... Considering how they can just move her at will without needing to remove the connecting rods or piston caps. Personally I'd love to see either 610 or ATSF 5000 return to steam, we really need a nice ten-coupled excursion star back on the rails.
@Connor Lee It's sad because there's really nothing like them running at the moment, they really were beasts. The closest we have is 4014 and even she's a dual service engine.
@Connor Lee 3985 is more than "out right now" they've straight up said they've basically retired her. As for stability, I'm not sure how true that is, the immense weight of big steam locomotives generally negates any unstable characteristics, however that immense weight also limits where they can be run, because heavy locomotives need heavy rails and well maintained right of way, otherwise they'll completely shred the tracks with their piston strokes.
I’d moved to Texas from California. A friend of mine told me about 610 and it’s sister 638. I was sad to see 638 scrapped but a least we have 610. However due to freaking Coronavirus I can’t see 610 in person. It’s been years sense I’ve seen a steam locomotive. I was also planning to see either SA&AP no. 60 or Santa Fe 5000 also. But maybe one day I might
Louisiana Rail Productions I am going to the Texas State Railroad in July 3rd 2020. I’m also going to the Grapevine Vintage Railroad. And it will happen in July 5th 2020.
610 would need MORE than new tubes ultra sound of the boiler etc. she needs for sure a new pilot truck because her original pilot wheels were worn BEYOND their maximum use. Especially on curvatures and bends. She also needs firebox sheet work as well. Trailing trucks also need question marks on whether to repair or replace them. My personal opinion, the name is all caps WLLIAM S PURDY because he was at the throttle of the 610 in the late 1970s .
Personally, I think it could be possible for the railroad to give her a light restoration where she could run periodically on a limited ticket without pulling any trains. It's been done before, but her condition internally might not be as good as the outside of her.
Im 20 years old and live in East Texas. My plan is to restore this locomotive and run it over its home rails. For the state of Texas to admire. But i cant dk it alone. Please spread the word
So after showing the video of it coming home under steam, how come you didn't even mention that it went back home to Ft. Worth for a period of a few years before it went to Palestine? Probably half of your video, most of the video you showed of 610 under steam was shot at the old Federal Quartermaster Depot in Ft. Worth where the engine originally came home to. The building you showed it steaming into was its first indoor storage in Ft. Worth. That building has either been expanded or completely replaced by the City of Ft. Worth and now serves as their city garage, it's off of James Ave. in South Ft. Worth. Edit: I'm old enough to remember 610 sitting outside the Will Rogers Exhibition center when I was a kid. It was sitting on tracks that were still connected to two different railroads at the time, they were used to transport the livestock to the Fat Stock Show back in the day, but were long unused by the time I can remember them.
It's at the old Federal Quartermaster Depot in Ft. Worth, Texas. Unfortunately no, it was disconnected from both railroads that served it about 30 years ago, and I think the tracks have all been removed now. It was served by ATSF and MKT. You can find it on google maps by looking at south Ft. Worth between James Ave. and Hemphill Street a little north of Loop 820. The building they were moving it into was either expanded or completely replaced with a larger one and is now the Ft. Worth City Garage on the map.
Lot more to it than that. While a restoration of 610 would need tons of money, the track at TSR would need an overhaul due to its size. Also from what I was told, it simply wouldn’t be profitable at the time. Not without running 25 car trains daily.
Another reason it may not leave its current home in Palestine, Texas is because Union Pacific apparently has a policy in which only steam locomotives from their heritage fleet can operate on that railroad's tracks.
I model the T&Pacific from Dallas to Ft. Worth. I have six Bachmann Texas Class locomotives made in the seventies. Everyone one them I love.
T&P 610 deserves another lease on life
As do a whole slew of iron horses.

Awesome video! #610 had a very haunting whistle.
I was thinking when America's 250th Birthday comes in 2026 this unit should be Repainted back to her Bicentennial Look from 1976.

Excellent locomotive 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
She needs a complete re paint
You can see the southern and freedom train paint bleeding thru

Awesome job! This video shows why 610 is a great workhorse and it’s one of our favorites. We enjoy seeing her everytime we go to Texas State Railroad
I really love Texas & Pacific 610. It’s another beautiful locomotive.

I live in Amarillo tx, I would love to see 5000 restored and operating around the area!
What A piece of machinery
If 610 were to be restored, WHERE will it run??? Def not GSMR frame is too long . Where else could it run???
What's with so many people in the cab....looks like a Tijuana taxi...

Who wants the 610 to be restored???
Kristal Kat they are restoring rn
Everybody, lol. But she'd have to be moved to a different RR to operate.

Is it just me, or does the feedwater heater make the 610 look almost like it's wearing a cowboy hat?

Is that railyard in the background still in existence?

T&P 610 should be donated to Ft. Worth or Dallas, line 4449 was donated to Portland.
Why won’t they restore no.610? Is it because they need to raise funds or they just want to keep it unrestored

Why should they bother keeping it if they're not going to restore it it's just sitting there taking up space It should be scrapped
