A heartwarming video. If you remember, what was the book you recommended in one of your earlier Hegel videos as a great and accessible place to start to read about his ideas? Thank you.
That's actually a pretty interesting philosophy on a personal library, i always feel bad because I collect books but then never have the time to actually read them properly.
It reminds me of Lacan's "little desire" who used to go out and buy books between two sessions. My book range has gone wild this year. Of course I buy more than I read. Buying is easier. But it is nice to have them waiting for me! I always feel welcome in compagny of books. But if you have to move it all out somewhere that could be a problem!
love the Benjamin quote at 2:20, it happens a lot that a book in the second-hand bookshop only jumps out at me because it goes well with a book that I already have, like gaps in the existing magic circle attracting new books which in turn create new gaps to fill with more books.
These musings made me think of the books of Byung Chul Han - a contemporary german philosopher who loves his Benjamin. Would be very interesting to hear your perspective on his work.
I recently watched the film Perfect Days, wherein the main character also has an extensive library. Have you seen this film? If not I high recommend it, if so, I’s love to hear your thoughts on it!
Buying books just for its sake seems like a product of hyper-consumerism similar to buying collectibles. Most of what I own is digital and I didn't have to pay them thanks to avenues that allow me to get them for free. It removes all the clutter I have at home that will just accumulate dust + cleaning time will be lessened thanks to that.
When your collection is a "mirror" that is only limiting yourself and expressing yourself as a consumer. Not too far different from clothes expreesing " who you are". Discover your local library.
I definitely encourage people to check out their local libraries. In fact I’d say any real bibliophile has a constant rotation of books going into and out of their collection, be it from the library or second hand bookstores.
Ps: the thumbnail is a photo I took of Jenaline at the Librairie Galignani in Paris. And yes, we did buy more books than we ended up reading.

My small library provides a portrait of my life both in what it contains what it's lost and what has never been there. Great video

A more contemporary version is to watch your personal library shrinking because you don’t have the money to keep that space 😢

It also helps if you don't have someone judging your every purchase so you feel like you can only use the public library.
I really enjoyed this little video, Julian - thanks for all your work!

My first visit to your channel. Quite an interesting video!
Thank you, hope you stick around 🙂
I have 1496 books and growing.

Yes it’s great. I actually made a video on it. Should be on my page under “popular”
Is there some kind of anniversary? Why everyone is talking about book reading suddenly?
Thanks Julian :)
Now I am at peace with my library (and my Amazon app finger).
Why not have two sections in your library: those you've read and those you've yet to read?
Books are potential.

But then again, isn't an unread book in your library - more than anything - a symptom of Desire?
Maybe just a reminder of one's own ineptitude.

I don't have to buy books because I can't read. 😎
